I agree with Dr.Jyoti.. Common civic sense is really uncommon.. It has penetrated deep into most of our places..I see the same here in Chennai too..Someone standing on the railway station comments on the shabby maintenance of railway tracks and it is the same someone who, without any botherations, throws away waste through the window while travelling in the train..It is disheartening to see such things..We need a huge revolution to change the attitudes of people in these issues..

And I appreciate your efforts Mickey Sugarless..
Keep up the good work you guys have been doing! Kudos !

Well explained!
And Linkesh's query is apt - "We need to define what exactly development is: Happy Millionaires, or Content Millions?"
We have to redefine progress and development. I wish India would take the lead on that score and show the world that content millions are far desirable than happy millionaires.
Have been time and again writing about that

This is a brilliant piece! I was recently in Hong Kong where I have never before seen a more seem-less transit system. One smart card gets a person from metro to ferry to mini/feeder bus, to large bus to local trains. And there are tonnes of underground walkways (all unfortunately air conditioned) its almost as if if you're not using public transport, you are having to walk and its no big deal! This is a model to be followed--and paying is a huge aspect of it--it MUST be made simple. The smart cards ("Octopus" cards) can even be used in vending machines and grocery stores and you can keep topping them up. When will we learn from these places? I believe delhi is creating the "Airport Express" of the metro--one thing that i do believe they are copying from Hong Kong--which will greatly reduce the traffic to and from the airport as travellers will even be able to check their luggage into their carrier AT the station somewhere in Delhi which will then only leave them with their carry-on when they arrive at the airport! Brilliant!

One smart card gets a person from metro to ferry to mini/feeder bus, to large bus to local trains. And there are tonnes of underground walkways (all unfortunately air conditioned) its almost as if if you’re not using public transport, you are having to walk and its no big deal! This is a model to be followed–and paying is a huge aspect of it–it MUST be made simple. The smart cards (”Octopus” cards) can even be used in vending machines and grocery stores and you can keep topping them up. When will we learn from these places? I believe delhi is creating the “Airport Express” of the metro–one thing that i do believe they are copying from Hong Kong–which will greatly reduce the traffic to and from the airport as travellers will even be able to check their luggage into their carrier AT the station somewhere in Delhi which will then only leave them with their carry-on when they arrive at the airport! Brilliant!

As a developing nation, India needs to think beyond the "traditional" methods of development. We need to define what exactly development is: Happy Millionaires, or Content Millions?

India actually is at a great point. With the right initiative, we can avoid the ecological catastrophes that have happened in the West. We can side-step the breakneck development of cities and rape of the Earth, and implement a truly Ethical model of development. We can do this because we have not yet gone irrevocably down either road.

With Millions of poor (The Hindu reported 700 million with no access to a toilet) India has a great problem, and a greater opportunity. We can develop the poor sections of society in an ecologically sustainable, contentedly simple, and environmentally sane way. We can develop not by increasing the handouts to companies for dirty factories and ecological disasters, but by cleaning up and educating our millions of brilliant minds just waiting to be dusted of so that they can SHINE!

Let's make India take that High road.

While each country has to regulate its internal industry, the real problem is worldwide. The CO2 doesn't know which country it came from. The Heat doesn't know which countries caused it. It affects us all. And so, to get down to 450ppm or below, ALL countries need to ensure that their emissions do not exceed this value.

Ideally, we will shoot for lower targets, taking the 450ppm limit not as a "That much is allowed to me" right, but as a "Better not go near that level" duty.

If every country tried to outdo the other in solving our Climate Crisis, the Crisis would be no more.

The problems of CO2 Emission should not be looked at as an imposition, it must be seen as a challenge, as is our Space programme. Seen in such a light, the solutions will come of their own accord.
