“I was rejected from my top choice school and waitlisted at my second choice. What do I do? How do I choose amongst my backup schools? I don’t know anything about them!” – Lauren B., Houston, TX

Remember why backup schools seemed like good choices months earlier
Everyone has a dream school, but in reality that school may say no, or at best, maybe. Stay on the waitlist then, sending a letter of continued commitment, but also focus on alternatives. Hopefully you researched diligently and applied only to schools you could imagine attending. Remind yourself now why a school was on your list - explore the course catalog, Facebook with current students, attend admitted student events to take the measure of prospective classmates. College will be whatever you make of it, wherever you attend, and after a few months, you will hardly recall having had another dream!
- Andrea Van Niekerk – Educational Consultant, College Goals

Accept the Waitlist Invite, But Secure Your Spot at Another School!
Waitlist decisions can sometimes be harder on applicants than outright rejections. They provide the disappointment of a rejection but not the closure. If waitlisted, accept the invitation to be placed on the waitlist. Because this will not result in a guaranteed positive outcome, submit a deposit at another institution. However, before submitting a deposit, reflect on your priorities for your best-fit institutions and determine which among your “admit” schools most closely match these priorities. If possible, visit these schools. However, if you can’t visit, take advantage of the opportunity to interact with current students via the phone, web chats, Unigo.com, etc. so you have the opportunity to gain some peer insight before making a final decision.
- Sarah Hernandez – Director of the Office of Diversity Programs in Engineering, Cornell University

It pays to be proactive as colleges often recognize initiative
Waitlisted students can maximize their chances of acceptance by taking the initiative to update their waitlist college with news of genuine achievements in the period since submitting the application. You may have done well at a science fair, in a poetry or photography contest, or even developed your own distinctive news item such as a display of your art at a local restaurant, organizing a car wash for Hospice, or having an article published in the local newspaper. Fax in updates that emphasize the college is your first choice school and affirm strongly that you will attend if admitted.
- Gail Lewis – Educational Consultant, College Goals

By exploring new options, you may find something even better
First of all, don’t panic. There are plenty of other options out there. In addition, although it may be hard to believe this right now (while you deal with the sting of rejection) this change in plans could be a good thing for you. This can force you to explore other options close to home or far away and even reconsider programs like a 2+2, where you attend a community college and transfer to a four-year school. Taking the time to investigate new academic program options can save you money and time in the long run. And remember, it’s their loss!
- Enid Arbelo – Editor-In-Chief, NextStepU

Community college could be a great upfront investment!
Consider attending a community college! There are many benefits to attending a community college, including: Cost – it’s usually less expensive. Smaller class sizes – instructors usually know your name. An easier application process. Credits usually transfer easily. You can still apply to your “dream school” and graduate from that school - and think of how much money you’ll save during those first 2 years!

Keep it PG! Delete any uploaded pics (or “tagged” ones) that might show alcohol, illegal substances or sexually suggestive poses. Remove any questionable posts that display a lack of tolerance. Set your Privacy Settings so that only your confirmed “friends” can have access to your profile. And last, relax! Admission officers are too busy reading and holistically evaluating your college applications, not searching for you on Facebook (but don’t go “friend-ing” them either…not appropriate!). In the selective sea of competitive students, why rock the college application boat?

The quick, and probably frustrating, answer is: potentially, but unlikely

Admissions officers barely have time to review each application, let alone dig around the internet for more dirt to consider. That said, they might Google an applicant if the file raises questions. If a student mentions starting a national club, for example, an admissions officer might search for the student or the club to confirm its existence. This could lead them to a Facebook page. As a general rule, don’t post anything on the internet that you wouldn’t share with your parents, teachers, priest, or the checker at the grocery store. Make your entire account private and remember that if you “like” a college page, or “friend” an admissions rep, they can see your profile.

Online activity can help if the student is in control of the content

Never have I heard a story in which Facebook helped a student in the admission process. In most social networking admission tales the applicant’s Facebook page stomps all over what was a careful application. Even if a student controls what he posts, he cannot control what a friend posts. On the other hand, a student’s homepage has, in the case of at least one student, helped him not only gain admission but receive a large scholarship. His website chronicled the launch of an urban scout troop and the series of events that led him to the idea.

Your Facebook Profile could be sending the wrong message

A “picture may be worth a thousand words” but are these the words you want admissions officers to hear? Admissions officers are busy people, and most will not take the time to search for you on Facebook unless they have specific concerns. Perhaps something on your essay raised a red flag, or a recommender might have included something troubling in his comments. Disciplinary issues noted on the application could send the admissions officer to check you out on Facebook. Be discreet about what you post on public websites. If you’d be uncomfortable having your grandmother see it, it probably doesn’t belong.

Internet users should know that there are no secrets

It’s hard to believe that anyone who uses the internet or social media, especially a teenager who is preparing to apply to college, could have missed the message that anything (pictures or words) posted on the internet, emailed, texted, or tweeted could be seen, and possibly misinterpreted. Since the high school records of college applicants are essentially under the microscope during the admissions process, it makes sense that other records (i.e., items posted online) might be scrutinized as well. After all, what’s the point of putting your best foot forward for four years while in school, if only to trip and stumble when posting online?

Yes, negative online presence can impact college admissions success

Admissions officers can and do review online presence of potential students. Facebook is just one online medium that can be reviewed by admissions officers. It is important that students represent themselves in a responsible manner on and offline, as admissions officers are looking to create a class of students that conduct themselves in an ethical and mature manner.

Best Fit vs. Best Rank

The question of wanting what is best goes without saying. College choice is hard to distill into a chart of numerical listings. I have used a number of resources. Each offers a kernel of truth and reality. Each is incomplete. Every one of the 4000 or so colleges has a series of characteristics that make up the college experience. I honestly believe a college is as good as its teachers and the courses chosen. Each student needs to sample broadly and choose his or her best “fit”. A visit goes a long way in finding the ideal or best college.

Academic Access

Proceed with caution when using college rankings to determine best fit

There is no denying we are a society obsessed with college rankings. The U.S. News and World Report are the most recognized and popular of all the college rankings. U.S. News is constantly under scrutiny for their flawed methodology. The rankings can be useful as a quick guide for a wealth of statistics that compare SAT scores, class size, acceptance rates and many other statistics side-by-side for a quick overview to begin a college search. Proceed with extreme caution if you are using these rankings to determine best match and fit. Get on campuses and ask yourself, how do I feel, can I live here, can I eat here, and does it seem like a good match for me. That will be the most authentic ranking out there.

Ranking on the rankings

I am not a big believer in the college rankings. I think there are so many other more important factors that help determine the best college fit for a student. I tell students that performance is king. If they are worried about the prestige of their undergraduate college because they are considering graduate school admissions, they are better off being at the top of their class at a somewhat less selective school than running with the middle or the bottom of the pack at a more prestigious school.

A Terrible Reason to Choose a School

Almost the worst reason for picking a college is its ranking - it’s right up there with choosing a college because your boyfriend goes there. If you need a list to get you started on your college search, use something more qualitative than what is essentially an annual laundry list. A great resource is The College Finder by Steven Antonoff, PhD, which has more than 600 lists - from colleges with the lowest tuition, to those with the most politically aware students, to those with the best chemistry programs. This is a great way to develop your college list.

Future Stars College Counseling Center

Students need to understand the factors influencing a college’s rank

One of the major components in US News and World Report’s annual ranking is peer ratings, in which college administrators are asked to rate other colleges. Do high schools poll students for their opinions when determining class rank? Of course not, because this would be based on personal perspective and incomplete information.
Unemployment rates in many states have reached double digits, keeping many from getting the jobs that they need to be successful and financially secure. It is difficult for many to find the jobs that they need to keep income flowing into their families. Luckily, there are options for those who are unemployed. Different types of training programs work to get people the jobs that they need.

There are also opportunities for individuals to get the training that they need through certificate programs and associate’s degree programs. For some, state-based training programs are the right training for their needs. For others, college-led training courses are the only way to get the job that they are looking for. Take the time to compare these state-based training programs against college resources to understand which avenue is right for you.

STEP Program

The Alaskan STEP program provides the unemployed with the training that they need to add to their overall skill set. After meeting with a career counselor, those who are unemployed with a job history will be connected to various training programs. While this is a strong program, it fails to provide job help to those who have been out of work for extended periods of time. Online degrees are not based on previous employment, helping those who have been removed from the workforce to get the education that they need to secure a job. The Alaskan STEP program also provides fewer training opportunities, as far as different work sectors are concerned. The wide variety of options provided by certificate programs and associate degrees allows individuals to train for different, more interesting careers.

WIA Program

The Workforce Investment Act or WIA program, created in 1998, is a national program. This WIA provides funding for basic skills and occupational training, connecting the unemployed with various free training opportunities.

While this program can be beneficial, it has its downfalls. The program moves to train people in the job markets that are growing. While this is beneficial, this is not the right choice for someone who has career aspirations in careers that are not considered to be growing or “hot”.

Training programs for the unemployed may not be able to provide you with the education that you need. The training dates are set, and the careers that you can be trained in are set. Achieving a certificate or associate’s degree from a college will allow you to get the type of training that you want, when you want it.

But state-based training programs aren’t necessarily the wrong choice. For some people, unemployment benefits and training programs for the unemployed are the perfect avenues to pursue, as they provide free training. Others will find that colleges with certificate programs and associate’s degrees will be more beneficial. Compare these different programs to completely understand what you would gain from each avenue. In the end, you will be able to choose the training that is right for you, helping you to be as successful as possible.

People are being flooded around them with these gadgets that they have a very deep knowledge of these devices to have an idea to buy them. Apple iPads are such innovative devices that it can be used as many things like the photo frames, jukebox, e-book reader, movie player, gaming machine, and social networking. The hardware and software which are used in Apple iPads make them very special and give them the freedom to use as many different ways. Some points that favor the use of iPads and what to know about the new Apple iPads are discussed below.

The Apple iPads weigh only about 1.5 pounds making them the smallest Internet device that can be carried along anywhere with less effort. Also some activities like downloading videos on Youtube and finding particular location using Google maps which used to take very long times can also be now done in no time, that too from any place, wow, isn’t that really good?

The advanced technology used in Wi-Fi system enables the device to have instant connection with the network by just putting it on rather than waiting to get connected. With any signal source it can be connected instantly. This is very useful especially when on an international tour because in new places, finding address and people would be a difficult task.

Better and larger storage for your favorite videos, images, files, song etc can be stored effortlessly by using the inbuilt file manager. All the files are arranged properly by the file manager and retrieves whenever required. This gives you the facility to save videos and watch them later at a leisurely time. Any important image if required can be immediately sent via e-mail. Apple iTunes too can be managed in an orderly manner and listen to when you feel so.

Online business would be benefited for individuals who use Internet for their business, Apple iPads are a boon because it allows them to always stay connected to Internet. Even when they travel they can carry them along since they weigh only about 1.5 pounds, and have a LED screen of 9.7 inch. This would pave way for them to always be connected with their customers and perform their business in a more efficiently.

Many online books, journals, magazines and newspapers can be read without the dependence of the conventional printed copies. This has the facility of carrying the books along without much pain and has the pleasure of reading whenever you feel like reading.

College can be an overwhelming time. You are away from home, often for the first time and often living with someone you didn’t pick, in a busy community where you are constantly amid other people. There is a lot of pressure to work hard, look good, meet people, and, above all, to succeed. Many students find the stresses of college to be too much. They end up quitting, often regretting this choice for the rest of their lives. If you find yourself feeling stressed out and overwhelmed, try these suggestions. They might help restore your sanity:

1. Exercise regularly. It’s a clich for a reason. Exercise is a proven way to combat stress. Just an energetic walk in the park or woods several times a week will help enormously. If you can find a treadmill or someone to run with, even better. The you exercise you get, the better you will feel. You will find your stress level is reduced, and you will sleep better.

2. Assemble a study group. If you’re stressed about a course, gather some other students and form a study group. Four or five others to go over the material once a week should do it. Even the most stubborn problem can be conquered with other minds on the matter. And don’t underestimate your contribution: You have things to offer, too, concepts they couldn’t get from the lecture or the text that came easily to you. Study groups can be formed both online or in-person so they work for both online education and campus universities.

3. Eat well. If you are on meal plan, pick your foods carefully. Make sure you eat plenty of vegetables (especially leafy greens), protein, and complex carbs (brown rice, bran, oatmeal). Buy yourself a good nutrition book if you don’t know which foods are healthiest for you. If you live off campus, take the time to cook simple meals like rice and beans, grilled cheese sandwiches, pasta and vegetables, salad. Once a week, cook something a bit more involved that you can keep in the fridge and heat up all week-a casserole or a soup, perhaps. Try not to each too much sugar. And don’t let yourself get too hungry; hunger can look a lot like stress and make you feel crazy and overwhelmed. Eating well, on the other hand, will go a long way toward helping you feel centered and efficient.

4. Get help. If you are having trouble with a particular course, if your course load feels like too much, or if you find yourself feeling worried and nervous much of the time, seek out the help of your advisor. That’s what he or she is there for. Don’t try and manage on your own if you aren’t feeling well. You (and maybe your parents) are paying good money to be in college, and you want to get as much out of it as you can. Being overwhelmed and stressed is not the optimal condition for learning. Your advisor may suggest you drop a course and add something else, or take less credits for the semester. If speaking with your advisor isn’t enough, consider talking to the college counselor or a therapist.

5. Have some fun. Remember college is supposed to be the best years of your life. Don’t spend it miserable and stressed. Get out with your friends. Go to the movies or a show. Have some friends over for dinner or drinks. Ask out that guy/girl you like. Spending time with friends is an excellent cure for stress. And don’t be afraid to talk about the stress you’re feeling. You’d be surprised how many other people feel the same thing.

College can be a lot to handle. But your stress level will abate if you are careful to take good care of yourself. Eat three meals a day, spend time with your friends, keep your workload at a reasonable level, and make sure you get enough sleep. If you still don’t feel well, get help. It may be just a matter of a meeting or two with your advisor or a therapist to get you feeling like yourself again.

While Reverse Mortgages have certainly come under scrutiny in recent months, some recent revisions and safeguards for borrowers have made the product more viable, saleable, and compatible.

First … let me clarify.

Reverse Mortgages are not a good product for every senior! But, here is why a Reverse Mortgage (both for a home already owned and a new purchase) may make sense for some seniors …

Reverse mortgages are good for:

If a senior (62 years of age or older, by definition) is struggling financially to make ends meet.

If a senior is using credit cards to pay bills and exist on a day-to-day basis.

If a senior has tapped their cash reserves, or even a large portion of their savings.

If a senior has a mortgage, and are late on their payments, but have equity in their home.

If the property cannot sell in the present market.

If eliminating housing payments allows a senior to stay in their home and balances their income to expenses. (A senior never makes a monthly payment in a Reverse Mortgage).

The above examples work for refinance loans as well, so why consider a Reverse Mortgage for a Purchase?

Again, with a Reverse Mortgage, you can buy a home and never make a payment again.

If having no monthly housing expense (besides taxes, insurance, utilities, and maintenance) is important to a senior, then this lending product is the one for them to consider.

You COULD pay cash for the new property and achieve the very same result, but your cash is then depleted. Depending on the age of the senior Buyer, they would be required to put down anywhere from 20% (minimally) to 45% down (or more, if preferred) on the purchase price. The remaining principal balance then is 55% to 80% of the sales price.

Interest accumulates for the remaining term of the loan, until the senior sells, moves out of the home, or would pass away, which leaves the remaining equity to their heirs. NO PAYMENTS are ever made! The equity just erodes over time. Since these are Non-Recourse Loans (HECMS), the heirs are protected (never owe more than what the home sells for or what is owed on the loan).

Borrowing this way allows the senior their independence, and does not eat-up their entire savings. It still allows them to live at home “rent free”.

Keeping an open mind to ALL financial opportunities and options is key. Find a qualified, knowledgeable and certified Reverse Mortgage Specialist to educate yourself to the pros and cons of these loans as they relate to your personal financial scenario. Reverse Mortgages CAN play a vital role in today’s society and markets … and do in the right instances.

The April 30th deadline for filing for a first time home buyer federal tax rebate has technically passed. That being said – there’s a little wiggle room for those that qualify and have entered into a binding agreement. For those who did file on time, we’ve compiled substantial information pertaining to the filing process as well as what you should expect from the IRS as far as your rebate’s concerned.

Background Information:

On November 6, 2009, the Worker, Home-ownership, and Business Assistance Act of 2009 went into effect. This Act provided tax rebates up to $8,000 for qualifying first time home buyers in the U.S. In this case, the federal definition of a first time home buyer is, “a buyer who has not owned a primary residence during the three years up to the date of purchase,” (www.irs.gov.) The initial deadline for these rebates was last November, however, an extension was granted, allowing rebate applications up until last Friday, April 30th.

TurboTax.intuit.com provided the following help regarding Home Purchase Documents Required by the IRS (applicable to both 1st time home buyers and long-time home buyers)

A copy of Form HUD-1, Settlement Statement, or other settlement statement. Find complete instructions here http://edocket.access.gpo.gov/cfr_2009/aprqtr/24cfr3500AppA.htm.

For purchasers of mobile homes who are unable to get a settlement statement, a copy of the executed retail sales contract showing all parties’ names and signatures, property address, purchase price and date of purchase.

For a newly constructed home where a settlement statement is not available, a copy of the certificate of occupancy showing the owner’s name, property address and date of the certificate.

For long-time home-buyers only:

To qualify, eligible taxpayers must show that they lived in their old homes for a five-consecutive-year period during the eight-year period ending on the purchase date of the new home. To claim the credit, long-time residents must attach the documents above. The IRS also recommends attaching any of the following to document the five-consecutive-year period:

Form 1098, Mortgage Interest Statement, or substitute mortgage interest statements,

Property tax records or

Homeowner’s insurance records.

If a rebate remains in limbo one channel of recourse remains the simple phone call. While speaking with an IRS agent may not always provide a direct answer, it’s at least one way to obtain the current status of a rebate, even if it’s not the information one wants to hear. The IRS can be contacted at ww.irs.gov
For those in need of an official IRS phone number, contact the Examinations department at 866.897.0177.
