Opening. Some of the issues I had: The karaoke has a consistent upbeat theme when the OP is anything but. The romaji is difficult to read. KFXing into a rainbow would have been kawaiier.

Despite all that, I did find it enjoyable for the parts where it fit.

Ending. Maybe I’m weird, but I like my karaoke to relate to the background visuals it’s being placed on. I don’t see any significance in the colors, and the karaoke often runs into the credits. The placement is usually sensible though.

Most of the lines in the ending would have looked better if they were split up across two screens. It’s harder to follow a paragraph when watching karaoke than it is to follow a clause.

Main Script.

“I want to race to the finish, ahead of the pack,”

The comma here is needed to describe how she wants to conduct her race. 

“You do tend to go all out.”

The italics are necessary to reflect the natural stress on “do” that would occur during speech.

This is a fantastic example of when not to use the Japanese script’s Engrish. Here, she says “best eight” in English. Obviously, this wouldn’t fit well in a sentence, so it’s written as “top eight” for the subtitles.

It’s nice to match the Engrish when you can, but it’s even more important to have a line that sounds good in English. (Unless the Engrish is for comedic effect like ‘Fabulous MAX’ or is some kind of commonly used terminology in a show.)

Nice try at capitalization, but not quite.

“The islands of Ogasawara are pretty this time of year.”

“The Ogasawara Islands are pretty this time of year.”

Because “Ogasawara Islands” is considered the name of a specific place, it should be capitalized.

Opening. The timing was off for the first karaoke line. Other than that, the font/color choice was all right. It wasn’t great, but it wasn’t something I’d look back on as “bad”.

This is why I don’t fucking like to review the same episode for multiple groups, especially when both groups are incompetent at editing CR scripts.

Half this fucking review is just going to be about the same errors I talked about in Commie’s review. So let me try to make this a valid read even if you already know what’s coming up.

Here’s my big problem with this line: I understand what’s being said, but it’s being phrased so fucktardedly that I want to dip the editor’s genitals in acid for thinking this would suffice. It fucking doesn’t.

See, by “true form” they’re getting at the idea that Athena has many different forms/faces/personalities/whatever-the-fuck. So when she’s saying this line it’s basically a “Hey, I’m ordering you to do this shit. Not as the fucking neko-loli, but as the fucking goddess of a long fucking list of shit. So fucking do it because I’m fucking awesome.” The issue here comes from a name not having a “true form”; it’s just a fucking name.

So what you want to do for this line is get the point across in the smartest, cleanest manner. When I’m editing CR scripts and don’t have a TLC to keep me check, I like to play things conservatively even if I know I can probably move outside my self-imposed limits. So a safe edit would be,

“In the name of the goddess Athena, I command you.”

Now this version of the line has benefits/disadvantages. The number 1 reason why I’d use it is because it gets the main point of the line across in a smooth, natural manner. In the process you lose a slight bit of specificity, but it’s worthwhile sacrifice for gaining a line that gets the majority of the message across in a pleasing manner.

QC is not a brand of cheap vodka.

Capitalization rules time! “god of death” here refers to a specific entity. It’s being used to refer to one known being, so it must be capitalized. You would use “god of death” in lowercase when you refer to it in a sense of non-uniqueness. For example, “Shinigami-chan is a god of death.” <- Because it’s used in a non-unique context (here as a job), you don’t need to capitalize it.

“Shinigami-chan is the God of Death.” <- Used in a unique context, likely to be used later to refer to Shinigami-chan specifically. “OMG, it’s the God of Death!” / “OMG, it’s Shinigami-chan!” <- They’re interchangeable, so capitalize it here.

There were multiple capitalization issues throughout the releases though for some reason there were fewer mistakes with this than Commie had.

Somebody thought this was an acceptable translation. There’s so much fail here, I wish the editor drowned in it.

Your subs suck from every angle.

The idiom they’re attempting to refer to here is “___ has it together.” You can “have it” together, but you can’t “be” together.

While “She’s finally arrived at the Gorgoneion.” could be considered a valid thought under the loosest use of the English language, it’s more appropriate to say “She’s finally found it. // She’s found the Gorgoneion.”

The Gorgoneion is a small object, so using it in the sense of a destination is honto retarded.

Athena’s referring to “the queen” in the sense of a single entity. As a title, you’d capitalize Queen here. It appears “the trinity” is another name for this god that is being revived. So that should be capitalized as well.

“The Queen, the Trinity, will revive.” <- Ending in a period because comma overuse is an ugly thing.

Note that their inability to understand proper capitalization is reflected constantly in these subs. I had to stop taking screenshots of their failure simply because it was getting annoying to pause the video and save images for every single line. I can’t say that particularly made me pleased.

How to Effectively Edit Campione:

Campione is not a difficult show to edit and Crunchyroll’s script is not that fucking hard to improve. Seriously. It just takes a bit of elbow grease.

The biggest script quirks are that characters often talk quite formally and there’s a lot of mythological references that are complete bullshit.

Learn when to capitalize titles.

“Ryuk is a god of death.”

“That’s the God of Death, Hades.”

This is going to be important because there’s a lot of theological shit being thrown around. Anyone who understands English will have a difficult time enjoying your script if you don’t keep it clean.

Have a basic understanding of mythology.

Great, now you’ve passed elementary school.

Phrase your shit properly.

Crunchyroll has some very unwieldy lines that sometimes can’t be handled just with commas. Use all forms of punctuation at your disposal — commas, periods, semicolons, ellipses, em-dashes. Whatever works, use it.

If you’re gonna joke, handle it right.

If you must use jokes in your script, make them funny. These things should either fit the mood, be cleverly intertwined with the script, or juxtapose script/context absurdities (though this last one needs to be handled very carefully). Handled properly, a measured amount of jokes can be a boon to any decent script.

Use proper formal speech.

One of the most noticeable things about CR’s script is how stuck it is on making sure every character speaks formally and archaically. If you want to roll with that (and you don’t have to), then make sure you fucking fix it. Formal, old-style speech does not mean you get to ignore English rules just because you’re unfamiliar with how said speech works.

However, if you’re not sure of how to do this right, don’t fucking do it. If English is not your native language and if you have no familiarity with how this has been used in other works, it’s best to not attempt editing in this style. Work within your limitations (and then practice outside of them).

Everything beyond this is just basic editing logic that can be summed up with “Make the subs reflect natural speech and ensure they adhere to relevant rules of grammar and spelling.”

Every other line in CR’s script should have been edited, but that did not happen here. I’m not sure whether this is because Commie’s editor went on cruise-control or because they just don’t understand English very well, but I imagine it’s a combination of both.

Real talk to my non-native nakama that are interested in fansubbing:

If you do not speak, read, write, or understand English at a native level, you should not be working on English subs in any way that involves you touching a main script. You’re free to typeset, kfx, style, time, and encode all you want, but working on an English portion of a script is not something you should ever do.

Why?

You will fuck up the English and ruin people’s experiences. This isn’t a possibility; it’s a certainty.

Think about the native English speakers who will be watching your subs. Would you want to watch something in your native language that looks terrible and is hardly readable? Probably not.

Even worse than pissing off native speakers, think about all the people who are still trying to learn English (yourself included). With poor subs, you’re directly feeding someone bad information about the language. You are lying to them and making it harder for them to learn. Dick move.

I know you guys just want to help and give back to a community that you like being a part of, but by applying your poor English to English scripts, you are killing experiences and anime itself. Please don’t kill anime.

Apply your efforts to areas where your poor knowledge of English won’t affect anything. Or maybe you could work on fansubs in your native language. I’m sure they need your help more than the English scene does.

Fansubbers often comment in their scripts when working on releases with their friends. Very few people see these conversations, because who really demuxes their anime to get to such Easter eggs? All that work for nothing; fansubbing is suffering.

Karaoke.

Opening. The color/font match the credits exceedingly well.

Rating: Good.

Ending. The font felt way too… weak. I guess I would have preferred a slightly darker color or bolder outline because you almost have to make sure you’re concentrating hard enough to read these lines.

Rating: Okay.

Typesetting.

Karaoke-typesetting. Naisu, naisu, naisu.

No issues with the typesetting. Good stuff.

Other.

The encoder screwed this up throughout the release. Sure looks great in screenshots, doesn’t it?

Script Quality

Karaoke.

The opening and ending required fewer mental gymnastics to understand than rori’s release.

Main Script.

I’m glad you changed this from “self-sacrificing bastard”, but this isn’t all that much better. “Mr. White Knight” or “mister white knight” would fit her character a lot better.

“How did you come up with that brilliant idea, mister white knight?”

I do think “white knight” is a brilliant translation though.

Ugh. This whole exchange seems clever at first, but it doesn’t fit contextually… at all.

“wink-wink, nudge-nudge” is all about the sexual innuendo. It’s the classic “if you know what I mean” phrase.

1. The first three lines don’t match up with the rest.

2. The only way this exchange could work is if Inaban told Iori she thought Iori was sleeping with Taichi and Inaban wouldn’t say that.

3. Iori wouldn’t blurt out “You told me earlier that Taichi and I had sexual relations!”

4. Taichi would freak out in an overexaggerated manner if Iori said anything along those lines.

5. Iori’s response in the final panel wouldn’t make sense as a response to “But you two did fuck.”

Jokes are funnier when they make sense.

Nonspecific fluff.

She’s telling an important story so at least try to not write generic, replaceable lines for it.

“If I behaved in the way he wanted me to, I thought he wouldn’t get mad.” {“behaved like this or did that” is fucking garbage. That’s grade school editing.}

“Perhaps I thought he’d even praise me.” {I’m making this more ambiguous because one of her most important character traits is that she doesn’t really know who she is anymore or what she’s actually feeling/thinking in a given situation.}

“I changed my tastes to match his.” {Because specificity is sooo hard!}

I’d like this better than rori’s wapanese “after-episode” line, but the tenses are fucked here. She’s still telling the story and it’s still set in the past.

“But the real hell started after that.”

“can” should be accented to reflect the stress that would be placed on it in natural speech.

While this seems clever, I preferred rori’s “Get some guts. // I think your guts are the problem.” over this version. My main issue here is that “I can’t suck all of your vomit back up.” doesn’t seem like something Taichi would say.

“What are you talking about?” or “What are you getting at?” would be much more natural lines to use here.

Beyond the “white knight” business, this was the first time in the episode that I thought Commie handled a scene much better than rori. rori’s was “but it’s not like you couldn’t steal a few coins every time. // I always imagine that you might do things like that.”

With Commie, your mind drifts away from the “coins” part and into other thoughts. Their version paints a darker picture, one that appears more accurate from her belief in the severity of the situation.

While there’s no issue with what Commie did here, I think rori’s “Inaban, you mean… // you’re a worrywart?” is much better for this scene. It diffuses the tension a lot better than just a simple “you worry too much?”

I liked Commie’s line here better than rori’s (“Weren’t you making weird movies with Taichi the other day?”). “Creepy” gets the point across much better.

Karaoke.

Opening. This is about as good as it’s going to get for English-only Yuru Yuri karaoke. I can’t think of any way to improve it.

The subs match the credits of the OP which is lucky because the credits of the OP aren’t hideous. Yeah, the last screen looks pretty bad, but I promise you it’s a lot better in motion — for about a second the subs alternate colors alongside the OP and it works really well.

Rating: Good+.

Ending. The colors were constantly shifting, and while I could figure out why at some points, it felt pretty random at others. I didn’t dig the font or its size, but it’s not a terribly bad karaoke all said. It’s watchable enough.

Rating: Okay.

Typesetting.

They did skip out on typesetting a number of things, but none of them were contextually important because the subs were constantly spelling out what the items were.

Other.

This is some pretty bad sub placement. I feel bad for everyone who has to experience it.

Script Quality

I can sort of see why you’d translate “fuwa fuwa” as lightly. By why the fuck would you translate “Yuru Yuri” as “Slowly”?

Okay, really, what the fuck is this supposed to mean?

That’s nice, except “One, two, Yuru Yuri!” is never actually said.

If a line is part of the background vocals, it should be presented as such. Otherwise people will get confused when you translated one line of background vocals without any indication they were different and then didn’t bother translating any of the other ones.

I think they’re trying to say something like “These are the best days of our lives” but what I’m reading isn’t really English.

Why would you contract “we are” when they clearly say “We are”, in English, in the song? Fuck.

Main Script.

There’s actually a noticeable difference between “every day” and “everyday”.

“I masturbate to anime every day.”

“Masturbating to anime is an everyday event.”

So this should be “every day”.

Too rushed and awkward, even with a pause placed somewhere in the middle. A slight rephrasing would be better in an attempt to mimic how a human would actually respond to Kyouko’s plans.

“So because you needed AAA batteries, we’re… going to the pool tomorrow?”

If you TL this as “It can’t be helped.”, I have a meat grinder you should meet.

Alliteration’s always an option.

This was pretty fucking brilliant. In this scene, Kyoukos start falling down really quickly and the subs end up matching the speed and intensity so the number of “Kyou…”s on the screen approximately matches the number of Kyoukos that are falling down.

Leaving just one “Kyou…” on the screen would have been fine, but the subs here actually made the scene better.

Good stuff, Commie.

Compared to the Crunchyroll script, Commie didn’t actually change very much. So there’s not all that much to praise Commie for here (there were maybe 10 actual edits alongside localization switches and name changes). But this just shows the CR script was pretty damn good to start with.

I’m not sure why any group (Hi, SHiN-gx) would bother to TL this show on their own when a few simple, intelligent edits to the CR translation can create a good final release.
