Building Better Skateparks with Jim Barnum

Matt Houghton from Push.ca has recently interviewed Jim Barnum from Spectrum Skateparks and put together an interesting article about Skatepark construction.The WSA has started to work with Jim as he has recently moved back to Whistler and boy are we glad he is here to keep us moving forward. After reading the article and with the communication I have had with Jim. I think he really does love skateboarding more than anyone else I know.

Paul Machnau took home $1000 and first place.

John Hanlon walked away with $500 (2nd) and Brad Sheppard took home $300 (3rd). Dave Kerr didn?t make finals but it didn?t stop him from sneaking in a a kickflip foot plant and a frontside flip foot plant.

Skate & Deploy event at WSSF - April 17th

We have been collaborating and are resurrecting some obstacles from the Creekside underground to bring the community together for a fun street style skate course in the underground of the conference center right in the village. For the full story check out the story in the Pique newspaper,

Skatepark Design meeting for Pemberton park

Hey Pemberton residents, Pemberton is working on a new skatepark and will be hosting a design meeting with Jim Barnum from Spectrum Skateparks. Sounds like they will be working on a pretty legit park. The meeting is scheduled for this Wednesday March 4th, 7 pm at the new Pemby Community centre. Show up and give your 2 cents to ensure they build a park that you will be keen on skating.

Help make the skate spot of your dreams come true right here in Whistler

It seems like summer is rolling in with the lack of snow. Jim Barnum from Spectrum Sk8park Creations has moved up to Whistler and Luna got us all together to have a meeting with the Muni to see what the WSA can come up with next. So we passed a bunch of ideas around and are working on an idea to construct a few micro architect mini parks all over Whistler and need your guys input to get the project rolling.

OBSTACLES

What would you want to skate, we are thinking of creating something that is going to look good for everyone to look at but ideal for us to skate. We are talking, granite slaps, mosaic tiles, bricks. Imagine a pyramid made of mosaic tiles, or two granite benches that were straight on the outside but curved in the inside with a manny pad in-between them. Take a peak at some of the images below and send us your own graphics and ideas in picture or text form. Ideally we are gonna try and keep the budget tight so we can eventually build a few spots.

LOCATIONS

We need to find some ideal locations, we are thinking somewhere off the valley trail, maybe at or near one of the lakes. Somewhere preferably with concrete or asphalt already there. Maybe somewhere where some developments are going down. Scour across Whistler and send us some locations where you would want to see a new micro spot be brought to live. We will want somewhere where the traffic flow will work for people walking, bikers etc…

The WSA is non profit group that focuses on ways to enrich skateboarding in Whistler.
