Avoid blisters when walking

Most avid outdoor walkers will, at one point, have experienced one of the most common foot injuries. This is a small pocket of fluid within the upper layers of the skin, which is discovered when boots are removed. A blister has developed, where the foot has been faced with friction, heat, dirt (causing friction) and moisture. If gravel or sand gets into your boots, make sure you remove them immediately- or else they will irritate your skin, resulting in blisters.

However, common and simple steps can be taken to avoid the chances of blisters. The number one priority is the boot fit. You must ensure that your boots fit your feet perfectly. To do this you should go to a specialist shop that will take time to measure your feet, give advice and offer you a range of suitable boots. Often people are so keen to “get out” that they forget the most important preparation is finding the best walking boots for them.

Keeping your body correctly hydrated prevents foot swelling, and keeps feet and toes from rubbing on your shoes. Additionally it prevents swollen toes from rubbing on each other. On the other hand, if you over-hydrate and take in excess sodium, fluid retention causes your toes and feet to swell and increases the likelihood for friction.

To prevent friction you should try wearing two pairs of socks; a thin pair (liner socks), and a your normal walking socks. Like most experiences with the outdoors, it is a journey of discovering and and adopting the best methods.

Guide to sleeping bag season ratings

Season ratings are a score from 1-5 used describe the level of comfort the sleeping bag will provide. Please note even though sleeping bags are categorised into season rating this is only a guide and everyone's needs will differ.

Season 1 – Provides warmth to 5°C. Good for Summer

Season 2 - Provides warmth to 0°C Good for Spring and Summer

Season 3 – Provides warmth to -5°C Good for Spring to Autumn use

Season 4 - Provides warmth to -10°C Best for use in Winter

Season 5 – Provides warmth to -15°C Best for professional expeditions

It is important to work out the temperature rating you will need on your trip. For example a 4 season sleeping bag will be too hot and uncomfortable for the heat of Summer.

When picking a sleeping bag there are important factors to take into consideration. The packed size, weight and maximum length of the sleeping bag. Some people feel the cold more than others. Research the type of sleeping bag you need. Work out the temperatures you will be sleeping in and perhaps go for a slightly warmer rating. Check the extreme temperature rating and remember this test is for emergencies only. This is the maximum (lowest) temperature that you could use this bag in without freezing. It is not recommend you test this!

The two main types of sleeping bag insulation are:

Down – which is a fine layer of fluffy feathers found underneath the normal feathers on geese or ducks. When down is used as a filling it creates small air pockets that trap in air, and therefore heat.

Synthetic – Polyfibre is a man-made version of down and the equivalent to natural down. Poly-fibre provides the chance to achieve higher levels of breathability, at a lower cost than down.

Inspect your tent before camping

Before you head off on camping trips, there is a certain amount of preparation that needs to take place. For example, you ought to ensure you have all the necessary camping equipment. Obviously, if you are lacking certain items, you will struggle to get the most from your adventures. However, it is not always enough to simply have your things packed up. Sometimes, you need to check them thoroughly to ensure they are working.

For example, you might benefit from inspecting your tent before you set off. After all, this is a crucial piece of kit, and if it is not working properly you will be in trouble. Either you will have to put up with substandard sleeping arrangements, or you will be forced to buy another tent on the road, meaning you run the risk of wasting your cash. Things you should check for include any tears or holes in the material. These are particularly likely to occur around the seams, as these are weaker points. Also, you should make sure you have all the right tent equipment. For instance, you need to have enough pegs and poles, and these items can be easy to lose. The last thing you want to happen is to be in the middle of nowhere assembling your tent only to discover there are not enough pegs to keep it stable. Similarly, you do not want to be awakened in the middle of the night by the feel of water dripping onto you and your sleeping bags through gaps in the material above your head.

Tips for camping

What do you need when you head into the great outdoors?

When you are heading on trips to the great outdoors, you need to carefully plan what it is you will take with you. This is a fine balancing act. You want to have everything you need without taking extraneous items. After all, while you should be comfortable on your adventures, you don't want to be carrying around things you don't need.
The possessions you take will also be determined by the mode of transport you are using. For example, if you are driving to a campsite, you can take quite a lot and so do not have to be so tactical.
On the other hand, if you are cycling or walking for much of the way, you will be limited in terms of the amount of items you have with you.
So, it is worthwhile thinking about your requirements before you go and planning what you will take.
There are certain things you will not be able to do without regardless of how you are getting around. For example, general camping equipment such as tents and sleeping bags are a necessity.
Other items that are generally essential include food and water, as well as waterproof attire.
However, whether you choose to take things like gas stoves and pans will very much depend on your individual requirements.
When you are considering what to take, bear in mind all the activities you will be doing while you are away and make sure you will be equipped to deal with them. It can help to draw up a list, as this means you will not forget things.

Research before going climbing

Going on climbing adventures can give you a great buzz and sense of adventure. You get to see places at their most raw and extreme, and experience true escapism at the same time.

However, such trips can be dangerous, and so it is vital you know what you are doing. It is vital that either you or someone else in your party has experience of organising such events. Also, carefully plan your route and research the area in detail before setting off.

You do not want to be confronted by completely unexpected difficulties while you are climbing. After all, rugged mountain landscapes can be extremely isolated, and if you run into problems, you might be on your own.

One of the important aspects of such adventures is making sure you are fully prepared in terms of the climbing equipment you need. Of course, this will depend on the nature of the particular excursion you are going on.

You may require mountain tents, crampons and many other specialised bits of kit in order to complete the journey successfully.

Meanwhile, it is also important that you have detailed maps of the area (and compass) with you so that if you get lost, you can navigate your way back to safety.

Thankfully, it is easy to get information about different climbing areas these days as a result of the web. There is a plethora of facts circulating in cyberspace about virtually any location you can think of. However, you must make sure the sources you use are reliable; otherwise you could run into issues.

Northampton, England (19 April, 2011) e-outdoor have just launched a brand new summer range of Vibram FiveFingers outdoor footwear.
Vibram FiveFingers were born from research which indicated that humans are able to run most comfortably and safely when barefoot, or wearing very minimal footwear.

Like many people, you may love getting out and about in the great outdoors, but prefer to do so when the weather is a little warmer. After all, while the countryside can be beautiful during the winter, sleeping outdoors can be testing. It goes dark early and you might have to contend with freezing rain or snow.

But now mercury in thermometers across the land is rising, and before long, the full warmth of later spring and summer will be upon us. For this reason, you should make sure you are fully stocked up on camping equipment.

After all, you have to be prepared for spells of good weather as they do not last long here in the UK. And so you should be ready to set off with your tent equipment, sleeping bags and other such things as soon as you get good weather reports.

And it has never been easier to source such equipment. For example, here at e-outdoor we stock a vast array of these products, meaning you will be able to find everything you could possibly need.

So, next time you have a spare few minutes, you should peruse the selection and decide what it is you are after. Also, you should store the things you buy in an organised fashion so that you do not have to dig around to find them before heading off on trips. Doing so reduces the chances you will forget potentially important items when you set off.

Wear in your walking boots

When you are planning a camping or trekking adventure, you might decide to invest in some new walking boots. Having good quality footwear can make your trip much more enjoyable as you will not be as likely to slip or fall, and you can have greater confidence in your steps. Also, good boots help to prevent your feet from getting wet, and there is nothing more uncomfortable than walking around with soggy feet.

However, when you invest in a pair of Meindl hiking boots, Salomon boots or any other brand of shoes, you should always wear them in before you go on your big walk. After all, this type of footwear is made from hard and tough material. This is great for protecting your feet and ankles, but it means they can initially cause some discomfort. But by going on some shorter strolls in the items before your trip, you can ensure they become easier to wear.

Not only will you start to get used to them, but the shoes will begin to mould to the shape of your feet. To make the process as easy as possible, you should ensure you take thick socks and plasters in case you get any blisters. By taking these steps, you can ensure you do not experience any pain as a result of your footwear while you are on your camping or trekking journey.

This is well worth it as there is nothing worse than having to put up with such difficulties. Indeed, in some cases, they can mean you have to cut your adventures short.

Cheap versus expensive waterproof jackets

A cheap waterproof could cost as little as £10 or £20. If that will keep the rain off, why pay £200 or even £300? The difference isn't in the degree of waterproofing- technically a plastic rubbish bag is fully waterproof- it's in how breathable the material is. In other words, it's not about stopping water coming in from the outside, it's about letting water get out from the inside.

A plastic shop dummy dressed in a £10 discount waterproof might stay just as dry as one dressed in the very best of Rab waterproof jackets but they aren't designed for mannequins, they're designed for people. Real people move about, and as they move about they sweat. This sweat needs to be allowed to evaporate away or the person inside the jacket will feel damp and uncomfortable. As soon as they stop moving the sweat will get cold and that is just as unpleasant as it sounds.

Top of the line waterproofs from companies like Rab, Mountain Equipment, The North Face or Berghaus are superbly breathable as well as fully waterproof. They're designed to be comfortable and keep you as non-sweaty as possible even when working hard in the mountains. It may not sound like much of a difference but when your body is giving everything it can and you're wearing a cheap plastic waterproof you will get just as wet with sweat as you would with rain water, and it'll smell much worse!

Cheaper, less breathable waterproofs are fine for wearing around town or watching the football, or even doing a little light walking. Not everyone needs an expensive highly breathable jacket, but for those that do, modern materials like eVent and GoreTex Proshell make life a lot more comfortable.

Pen knives have come full circle. In centuries past a pen knife was something a gentleman carried in order to cut fresh quills for writing. It was simply a small, very sharp single blade. These days the most useful little knives might actually contain a tiny biro pen along with dozens of other handy little tools - scissors, nail file, bottle openers, LED lights, corkscrews, screw drivers, tiny saws... the list goes on!

A knife is one of the most indispensable pieces of camping equipment, even on wholly civilised camping trips where the family spend a few days in a field with showers and washing-up facilities provided. The most serious trouble you are likely to encounter is getting a bit wet, but a trusty knife is still your best friend for cutting string for guy ropes, slicing cheese for sandwiches, finding a way into plastic meal pouches, and opening a relaxing beer.

They are also great to have around for day to day uses. A fully featured Victorinox swiss army knife can help you make small repairs around the house and in the car. There is even a recorded incident of a passengers swiss army knife being used to get a train back underway when a faulty windscreen-wiper had halted progress. Not bad for something you can keep in your pocket!

They also make wonderful gifts. Every outdoor person should have one, and so should every DIY-minded suburbanite. You never know when they will come in handy but a good swiss army knife is sure to.

Cut Down on Camping Weight

If you are planning to head off with your camping equipment on an adventure into nature, you should be tactical about what you take. After all, if you have too many items, you will be weighed down and may find the whole experience extremely draining. There are several different ways in which you can reduce the number of objects you carry.

Obviously, you cannot do it without tent equipment, sleeping bags and other such necessities. Without these, your excursion to the great outdoors will be miserable as you need somewhere comfortable to rest your head after a long day walking. However, you should avoid carting around heavy or unnecessary possessions. For example, there is no need to take a pillow with you on such trips. A rolled up jumper will more than suffice, and as this is something you will have with you to wear during the daytime anyway, it will add no extra weight. Also, you should try to find a tent that is as light as possible, as this will probably be the most substantial thing you have with you.

Another point to bear in mind is the way you carry your possessions. Investing in a high-quality, well designed rucksack can make a huge difference to your experiences as such products distribute the weight effectively, meaning no area of your body need be over exerted. Nothing should go with you on your camping adventures that will not come in useful. By being careful in your planning, you can make your life considerably easier.

I recently paid a visit to the Lake District for a wild camp and a walk up Helvellyn. Graham and I left Glenridding, a small village at the southern end of Ullswater Lake, for a two day walk that would include Fairfield, Helvellyn and Striding Edge. As we hit the trail early morning we had the memorable experience of witnessing a cloud inversion. A low cloud was covering the valley so we climbed Arnison Crag for a better view. Once we were above the cloud all we could see were a few mountains and a sea of white cloud.

Above - Graham enjoying the view

The sun was shining as we made our way up the slope of Birks and along the ridge to the summit of St. Sunday Crag (841m). After a few swigs of water, we descended the ridge to Deepdale Hause. With a last little push over Cofa Pike, we headed onto Fairfield summit (873m) littered with cairns. Bathing in the sun on Fairfield, Graham and I discussed our footwear: I had decided to wear my comfortable and supportive Lowa Renegade Mids while Graham chose the lightweight Inov8 Terroc 345. He told me that one trip, he had forgotten his walking boots and had to resort to a pair of Inov8 trainers. However he was immediately coverted by the lightness and sturdy ankle support. Now he wears his Inov8's everywhere.

Above - Gideon on top of Fairfield

After lunch, we headed down from Fairfield to Grisedale Tarn. We planned to spend the night at the isolated Hard Tarn so we made our way back down the valley in search of it. Eventually, we found Hard Tarn perched at the top of a cove. After a quick dip in the freezing Hard Tarn (literally in and out!) we had a bite to eat, set up our Vaude tent and settled down for the night.

Above - Spot the tent on Hard Tarn

The next morning was cloudy as we headed back towards Grisedale Tarn. We were hoping it might clear by the time we reached Helvellyn summit. Unfortunately, the clouds weren’t shifting as we made the ascent towards Dollywagon Pike and along Nethermost Pike. We were still in cloud by the time we reached a busy Helvellyn Summit (949m) and disappointingly there were no views. I was grateful that I had packed my Berghaus Ignite Jacket. Once the cosy Primaloft Jacket began to warm me up, we had a bite to eat, hot tea and some celebratory chocolate. Sitting in the cross shaped shelter we discussed how we would approach the last leg of our walk along Striding Edge.

Above - In the cloud on top of Helvellyn

We began the rocky route down Striding edge. We once caught a brief glimpse of Red Tarn far below but for the most of it we were in cloud. The final part of our walk was a long, but comfortable stroll along Grisedale Brow arriving late afternoon in Glenridding.

Outdoor Footwear - The Perfect Fit

By Bill Howbert.

Step One – Consider Use

When looking to purchase outdoor footwear the first step is to consider what the footwear will be used for. For example do you need your footwear to be waterproof? Our British climate makes most walkers prefer waterproof footwear, and this is achieved by waterproof membranes, such as Gore-Tex. At e-outdoor we place footwear into four main categories.

Travel Shoes: Flexible footwear suitable for airport or city use. Most models also offer good grip with some support on the upper. You can travel to your destination, then go on a safari, using the same shoes.

Approach Shoes: Usually based on the trainer design, but offer more support and grip than a normal trainer. Some have waterproof membranes and some don't. They may be used for general rambling, but less protection on the ankles.

Walking Boots: Provide ankle support, and good grip. Some of them have quite stiff soles while others are more flexible. A few of them are "mid" height, with the ankle height being between a boot and a shoe. There is a big range in price and design quality, and this category forms our largest footwear grouping.

Trekking Footwear: Generally boots with stiffer soles, and higher, firmer cuffs. They will generally be a bit heavier than walking boots, and have high quality design and materials. Some are almost rigid in their soles.

Step Two – Consider Size

What is your normal shoe size? Often your outdoor boot size will be ½ to 1 size bigger than your shoe size. This enables you to wear suitable pair of thick walking socks.
Every manufacturer has its own sizing system. If possible a good idea would be to try on other footwear from the company to give a good indication.

Step Three - Evaluate Footwear

We always advise trying the boots indoors first. There is no rush. Do it at your convenience. If they are not right, they can easily be exchanged if they haven't been outdoors.

It is best to try the boots in the afternoon, because our feet normally swell a bit as they warm up in the course of the day. It helps to use a thick pair of walking socks. These will "fill out" the boots and provide cushioning.

Try the "finger test" with your walking socks on. Put your new boots on, leaving them unlaced, with your feet free to move. Then try pushing your index finger down behind your Achilles tendon to the base of the heel. There should be ample room for this, allowing your foot to slide forward within the boot.

Next, lace the boots up. Try to take the slack out of the laces, and lace them firmly to the top hook. The way the boots are laced can "fine-tune" the fit. The lacing should be firm enough to hold the heel in place. Pressure on the shin can be reduced by looser lacing on the top hook, as long as the heel doesn't become too free to move, causing blisters.

Walk around the house in the boots. Let your feet warm up in them. Try walking on the stairs with them. Try walking fast (even jogging) with them. Leave them on for a good length of time you could even do something active, like hoovering! This will give a good idea of fit.

Try to ascertain:

is the boot moving much at the heel? (Try walking on some stairs.)

is the toe banging the front?

is it pinching in the width? (Try kicking your toe downwards on the floor.)

Summary

Remember that the boots will "give" a bit in the width, though not in the length. It is better for the boot to be "a bit too big, than a bit too small", as it can always be adjusted by a thicker sock, a volume adjuster, or firmer lacing techniques. Often there can be a slight difference in size between right and left feet. Make sure the boots are fitted for the larger foot. The aim is a snug, but comfortable fit, with no banging at the toe, and no rubbing at the heel. If you are unhappy about the fit, the next size could be ordered. The important thing is to end up with boots which your feet are happy in.

Operating from White & Bishop (Northampton) premises saw the online department stretched to the limits. Increasing outdoor brands, ranges and stock ultimately meant more space was needed. So, for a constantly growing business, plans were made for expansion.

With the rise of demand for services, the online store e-outdoor was launched and has continued to grow ever since.

Inov-8 X-Talon and Mudclaw - review

By Alison Tay.

As many cross-country leagues have had their first fixtures, it would be apt to review our best selling off-road lightweight running shoes suitable for those boggy races.

I have selected the Mudclaw due to its heavyduty grip and the X-Talon as it boasts a very lightweight racer.

Inov-8 X-Talon

This shoe is has an attractive design (which probably wouldn't stay this way after a boggy cross-country race). I'm a UK 8 in running shoes and these shoes are a standard fitting shoe. I have slightly wide feet too, and they fit perfectly.

First impressions: very flexible and incredibly lightweight shoe (212g), and feels like you're running on air. The studs on the sole seem fairly substantial, but not too much that you cannot run on the odd pavement. Inov-8 also features sticky rubber, which provides extra grip in wet conditions.

The protective rand and toe box is not a full rigid rubber layer but more of a soft material which is ideal for racing as you don't want to have your toes ramming against hard material downhill.

The fit is said to be performance last, which Inov-8 states 'ensures minimal internal movement when contouring, ascending and descending'. Having done a few strides up and down a hill in these, I have found that the shoe holds my heel very well and doesn't move, making it perfect for that extra push on the muddy uphill without worrying about losing your shoe. This would prove to be a great advantage for races when you want less weight on your feet and yet push yourself just that much more to get a PB.

The only downside of the shoe is that the laces are rather thin and doesn't have the same lace holder other Inov-8 shoes have. The laces also feel very smooth (i.e. without the nobbles which hold them in place). This, however, doesn't make that much of a difference considering the lacing you usually use for off-road shoes keep the laces taut. But for those who get particular about the tension of the laces, this is one issue to consider before getting the shoe. However, this can always be rectified with replacement laces/lock laces, whatever you prefer.

Price: £68.00 is a very reasonable price for a lightweight cross country, fell and multi terrain racing shoe, considering race trainers (without any grip for XC) are usually about £60 and heavyduty spikes will easily cost £60.

Inov-8 Mudclaw

Something I've actually forgot to mention, was that there is significantly less packaging material in the Inov8 box, which would sit well with the environmentally conscious. If you see the picture above and below, Inov8 have adopted a no-frills packaging (not even the paper bits in the shoe)!

This shoe has a similar design to the Talons with bright yellow stripes and a grey-ish base. The fit is similar to the Talons lengthwise, but you can feel the difference in the width. They are quite a bit narrower than the Talons and as I've mentioned earlier I have wide feet and wouldn't wear more than a mono skin sock to run in these.

Also built for racing, the Mudclaws are more than 100g heavier than the X-Talons. However, putting them on, you get a more robust feel and have a more secure lacing (thicker laces with the holders to ensure they are in place). I lost my shoes in a particular cross-country race and used these shoes in similar conditions in that same race, and didn't lose my shoes! The studs are chunkier, which give you the extra grip in the mud or wet fields.

The protective rand is made of a firmer material, which do not have a soft feel like the Talons. However, there is less mesh material exposed (meaning less muddy water coming in). But if it is a really muddy race, face it, your feet are going to get wet anyway...

Inov8 labels this as their most durable shoe and fell racer, and I definitely recommend them after using them for a season of cross-country, multi-terrain races and beach runs. Its weight is the only disadvantage compared to most racing shoes at a hefty 333g, however, it offers you the secure fit and robust feel which will give you confidence to tackle the most difficult terrain.

Price: £63.75 is lower than the X-talons, and would be ideal for those on a budget and not really fussed about the extra weight. These could also be used for training runs and field runs, and I've had my old ones for 2 years before they really stunk.... I would say that these are a great investment.

Sleeping is great! so make sure your sleeping bag is too. Whether a family camper or mountain marathon enthusiast crawling into a great sleeping bag is important after a day exploring the outdoors. We have selected five classic bags from e-outdoor.co.uk.

Rab Ascent 500 - View

Built for all mountain performance, warmth and comfort, the Rab Ascent series is a popular choice for many mountaineers. It is made with pertex with microlight inner and outer fabric and built in a mummy shape. Ideal for autumn, it has a comfort rating of 1˚C and limit of comfort of -5˚C (and extreme temperature of -22˚C for the brave). The duck down insulation provides warmth and yet not compromising the weight of the sleeping bag.

The mummy shaped design of this sleeping bag enables the product to stay closer to your body and hence keep you warmer by minimising the movement of air around your body inside the bag. Another advantage of this shape is that it makes the product lighter as there is less material involved. When in the compression stuffed sack, the Rab Ascent 500 folds down to about 13inches in length! This would appeal to the traveller who seeks to minimise bulk.

The North Face Wasatch - View

Using Heatshield Optimal Technology™ (H.O.T. SL) synthetic insulation, this is a two-plus season sleeping bag. This sleeping bag has excellent reviews from customers as a spring/summer sleeping bag which is easily compressed into a small sac.

Overlapping shingle construction in this product brings about extra loft and the no stitching aspect of this eliminates cold spots. This sleeping bag also features a mummy shape which will help preserve your body warmth at night.

Mountain Equipment Starlight II - View

This is a 3 season sleeping bag with comfort temperature of 3˚C and a limit of comfort temperature of -2˚C. This sleeping bag packs easily and is rather light, and at the same time not sacrificing warmth on a cold night. It has a mummy shape which eliminates air movement in your sleeping bag and reduces bulk of the sleeping bag.

Being a synthetic sleeping bag, this will be ideal if you are camping over wet conditions (since down insulation does not retain its insulation properties when wet). The hood provided in this sleeping bag could also act as a head rest if you adjust the drawcords appropriately or just as a hood to prevent warm air circulating in the bag from escaping.

Some customers have used this during the colder nights as a sleeping bag, and as a bivi bag during the warm summer nights- making this product a value for money purchase for the keen outdoor adventurer.

Ten card fraud prevention tips

Here at e-outdoor we realise that a secure transaction is of the uttermost importance. Listed are 10 important check points for the e-shopping enthusiast.

So you've found something that you want to buy online, but need a bit of reassurance before you commit to paying. You'll probably want to make sure that your card data is being used responsibly and that your details aren't going to be compromised.

Here's what to look out for:

Hypertext Transfer Protocol more commonly known as http is used for most webpages. However when you come to entering your card details online, watch out for the change from http to https ensuring the page is using a secure connection. However be warned, if not properly implemented, https is not fail safe so read on for some more top tips...

Always ensure when you are entering card details, you can see a locked padlock or unbroken key symbol next to the address bar or at the bottom of the page. Double clicking on the padlock symbol will display further security information for the site.

Have a look for the sites Security policy. This should detail what information they are going to collect and how they are going to use it.

If you come across 3D Secure and haven’t registered, make sure you do. 3D Secure provides an additional layer of protection by asking you to enter a password that has been registered with your bank. This way if your card information is obtained illegally, it will help to prevent funds being spent in your name.

Keep hold of any confirmation emails that you receive. Always check goods against your card statements. This way you can easily identify charges that you don’t recognise

Make sure the retailer you are shopping with has some level of PCI compliance. If you can’t find the information you’re looking for, don’t be afraid to contact the retailer and ask

It may sound obvious but make sure there are contact details on the site including a physical address.

Check online for reviews. With social media more popular than ever, if a customer has received bad service, the chances are they will have put it online.

Try using a credit card rather than debit-It will offer you more consumer protection

If you haven’t received your goods and are unable to contact the company in question, contact your bank for a chargeback.

By Alison Tay

With only 2 months to go to the start of the next Endurancelife coastal trail series, it would seem apt to blog about it!

The Endurancelife series features 10k, half marathons, full marathons and ultra marathons (newly introduced for the brave) along scenic coastal routes all over the UK. Having done the Gower 10k myself, I must say it has been an amazing experience. Well marshalled, very polite marshalls, and generally very well-organised!

The races cater to all runners, and they all offer a challenge to participants. Tough races (in my opinion anyway) provide a great sense of satisfaction to the participant upon completion, no matter how painful the hill climbs prove.

Trail shoes in this series is a must, especially if it has been a wet week prior to the race. With coastal paths especially, it is imperative to not let grip (more precisely, the lack of) hinder your enjoyment in the race. For those attempting a half, full or ultra marathon, the race organisers include a mandatory list of kit you have to bring (wind jacket, mobile phone etc.) for safety reasons! Given the distance and difficulty of the course, nutrition would be necessary! Hydration packs for those who use isotonic hydration tablets for a hot day will also be beneficial.

I personally like running in Thorlos socks for the added cushioning to the heel. Trail shoes tend to keep your feet as close to the ground as possible for added stability, and have slightly less cushioning than your running trainers. For those who want the added cushioning, Sorbothane full strike insoles add little height to your shoe and provide very good cushioning for your run (especially if you're doing an ultra!).

Most importantly, TRAINING! The lack of training especially for longer distances could ruin your experience of such a scenic and challenging race, and could even cause injuries. What I've found helpful is doing your longer runs in the kit you are intending to race in, and do the necessary alterations for the actual day!
