Santorini is famous for dozens of reasons, but mostly about its amazing views over the volcano & the Caldera, its breathtaking sunsets and its uniquely romantic spots all over the island, turning it into a global nest for couples and lovers. However, what is gaining great attention over the last few decades is the rapidly developing industry of winemaking from the locals, whose fame has already exceeded the Greek borders, winning prestigious awards for their world-class wines. The case of Santorini, though, is special, as the volcanic tuff of the island prevented the phylloxera from affecting the vineyards over the years. Nowadays, the Santorinian wineries are included between the most prominent wine producers worldwide, with Assyrtiko comprising the signature variety alongside with Aidani, Mandilaria, Mavrotragano and Athiri.

Ktima Argyrou

Established in 1903 and located at Episkopi Gonias Thira, this small winery was included in the top 100 list of wineries worldwide by the specialized american magazine Wine & Spirits, making it one of the three Greek labels that were awarded. The candidates were examined for their consistency in quality of their products and they received this prestigious award in a great event in San Francisco.

Ktima Argyrou still uses the traditional and unique Santorinian technique of pruning and vinification, drafting indigenous grape varieties and binding their climatises altogether, thus forming a natural basket (the “kouloures” concept) which protects the grapes from the fierce winds and heat of the island. The winery is open to visitors only after specific arrangement and instead of the very good wines, visitors get to taste the unique organic-fair trade chocolate 60% Zotter, which is composed of a mixture of 10% sweet wine Vinsanto (Vino di Santo) and Rooibos tea. The approximately 80 acres of Ktima Argyrou's vineyards produce 1600-2000 kg of grapes per acre and the vine harvest takes place between 10-25 of August.

Signature labels of Ktima Argyrou (among other):

Mavrotragano Argyrou: Intense red colour with aromas of cherries, sour cherries and blackcurrants.

Vinsanto Argyrou: Ageing for 17 years into wine barrels and 3 into bottles. Amber glowing color with delicate scents of honey and dried fruits, and continues with a touch of brandy, cocoa, butter caramel and roasted nuts.

Aidani: White-yellow colour, dry, with aromas of tropical fruits and herbs.

Ktima Sigala

The “Ktima Sigalas” company was founded in 1991 and at first it was located at the older winery grounds of Sigala family. In 1998 a new winemaking unit was built in the region of Baxes, Oia, in order to update its production, ageing and bottling methods. The Sigalas' winery produces 300 thousands bottles per year, comprising the most reliable winemaker of the island with exports reaching numerous places of the world (Germany, Belgium, France, Austria, England, USA, Hong Kong Singapore, Australia etc). Furthermore, and within the Greek borders, the luxurious complexes of Andronis Exclusive, all located in Oia, include many labels of local producers in their wine-tasting experiences, supporting the domestic high quality effort.

Nyxteri 2011: Dry wine, yellow colour with golden hues, Assyrtiko with 15% alc.

Aromas of mature fruits with scents of honeycomb, honey, chamomile and tea.
Kavalieros 2012: Bright, straw blonde colour, with golden hues with intense aromas of citrus fruit (ripe lemon), accompanied by hints of herbs and citrus flowers.
Apiliotis: Deep and rich red colour, with the proper balance between sugars, tannins and acidity.

Gaia Wines

The other Santorinian winery that was awarded for its consistency to quality from the specialized american magazine Wine & Spirits last year (the third was Ktima Gerovassiliou from Epanomi Thessaloniki), Gaia Wines retains two great wineries in the two of the best vineyards of Greece, Santorini and Nemea in the Peloponnese, exporting almost half of its production to Europe, North America, Australia & Brazil.

Gaia Wines comprises the most industrial winery of the island, operating as a tomato factory before being restored. The Gaia winery is located at the east part of the island, next to the seaside and it is established in a beautiful stone-built building from the past century. Visitors can taste its great wine varieties from both of the Gaia's vineyards, while they can also enjoy a tour to the little vinegar factory of the company which produces vinegar from the Assyrtiko variety. The winery is open to visitors from May to October.

Thalassitis Oak Fermented: well-structured wine with mineral flavours, well-combined with nuances of wood, vanilla, incense and acacia flowers
Thalassitis: bone-dry wine with strong character: full-bodied, well-structured with crisp acidity, distinctive minerality and delicate honeysuckle aromas
Vinsanto by Gaia: the primary grape used us Assyrtiko with very small amounts of Athiri and Aidani. A portion of the grapes are sun dried in the strong Santorini summer sun while another portion is shade dried to maintain relative fruit freshness.

Cycladic customs during Christmas

Either you are a true believer or not, Christmas is a period of time brimming with symbolisms and images. There is no place you will find on earth where people do not experience, in a way, the energy and vibes flowing from this wonderful celebration of Christianity. What is more interesting through Christmas period though, is these special, unique rituals that small communities retain and cultivate over the years, filled with symbolic gestures, representations of the past and special recipes. The island group of Cyclades comprises exactly such communities where because of their massive touristic activity during the summer months, they are not usually referred for their rich, and weird, Christmas customs.

People of Cyclades experience the “Twelve Days”, beginning for the day of Christmas till the 6th of January, when orthodox feast day of the Epiphany is celebrated. A general superstition is that they consider a good sign if a pigeon lands at their front yard and/or the wind is blowing from the north at the first day of the new year. The opposite happens if the landing bird is a raven.

In Santorini there is a really old custom, since the Byzantine era, that people of Santorini still follow at the first day of the year. After the completion of the service all elementary school students give the “Kalichera” (good hand) to their teacher. This… good hand can be baring money, eggs or chickens! The same applies also to the master of each family who goes to his siblings' houses and treat them the same way. In terms of festive delights, there are the Christmas Santorinian pancakes of Oia, home-village to our favourite Art Maisons. These “pancakes” are similar type of dough with donuts, made in a pan and poured with molasses. This local dessert can’t be found anywhere else, making Oia special even as a winter destination!

The villagers of Naxos, during those twelve days, keep a burning log in their fireplaces, the so-called “Christokoutsouro” (the log of the Christ), whose ashes throw to their plants and pets as blessing. Staying at Naxos, at Glinado village, couples put carefully two pieces of wood in a cross-shaped formation. With this gesture couples believe that they will enhance their bond exactly as the two logs are bonding under the fire.

According to a local legend in Folegandros, home to our favourite Design hotel Anemi, the whole earth stands on a tree. Goblins living underground saw this tree every single day in their effort to conquer the upper part of the earth as well. Thus, those twelve days before the celebration of Epiphany they appear to people in order to mock them and laugh for the upcoming disaster. But, fortunately for the human genus, the revelation of God as a human being in the body of Jesus Christ (the Epiphany), comes to mess with their hideous plans and send them back to their subterranean life, only to find that the tree is again strong and thriving. This development symbolizes the power and magnitude of mother nature, who has so generously blessed this small island.

Last, but not least, one shouldn’t forget that Season’s holidays are mainly a family event and celebration. Families all over the world come together over a dinner table and spend some meaningful time with each other. Paros, a very family-friendly island, that many Greeks love visiting, focuses on just that: togetherness. And Christianity. The small island with the great beaches, that we love to stay during summer holidays - we’re usually residing at Aloni hotel, doesn’t have some special, unique or “weird” Christmas tradition, instead it has many annual bazaars, festive events and celebrations. However the island does something rare on Epiphany, which is considered the end of the Holidays. Typically, all over Greece, the blessing of the waters takes place, by throwing a cross in the water and people swimming to catch it. While this is common everywhere, in Paros all the villages of the island do this separately! It’s a thrilling experience knowing that all the island gathers around their closest church and witnesses or even takes part in this daring Christmas custom!

There are specific occasions during a couple's life together that when remembered, should be accompanied with emotions brimming with joy, exuberance and nostalgia; the first kiss, the first (unofficial) anniversary, the first trip, the wedding, the honeymoon, the birth of a child. Having in mind this exact concept, we decided as a celebration for our wedding, to visit Elounda at Crete for our honeymoon. Elounda is small town of impeccable natural beauty, situated on the northeastern part of the island, gaining great touristic attention over the last decades because of its ideal mix of wonderful seashores, turquoise waters, luxurious hotel resorts and many many things to enjoy all day long.

After doing our research for special places to visit within the prefecture of Lasithi where Elounda belongs to, we decided to plan an excursion to Limni Voulismeni, where the myth says that Goddess Athena was bathing, and admired the amazing, panoramic view from the park above the lake drinking local Cretan wine.

The unique city of Ierapetra, which comprises the southernmost place of Europe, was another destination that made it to our daily plans around the town of Elounda. Instead of the deep ancient history of Ierapetra, this small city is a great place for long walks in the tiny cobbled alleys,holding hands, with its many bars and cafes peppered all around. We also tried the Greek local spirit “raki” (or tsikoudia) and we were dazzled, literally and metaphorically!

Mystras: Walking the history of Byzantium

Although Sparta is notorious for its ancient history, with citizens who were the best warriors in all of the then-known world. But hidden in this region’s long past is a jewel of the most recent times that has made it into the UNESCO World Heritage Site list and is definitely worth visiting: Mystras.

Mystras is located on the foothill of Mt. Taygetos, around 6km. away from Sparta. We traveled there from our hotel Alas Resort on car, that the front desk booked us. The road was great and really pleasant on a sunny day to drive. During our trip, we gathered all info we had on this “ghost town”.

Founded by the Frankish leader William II de Villeharduin in 1249, the castle on top of Mystras served as the seat of the Despotate of Moreas, hosting royalty and nobles. For two centuries the town became very prosperous, rich and powerful, second only to Constantinople, in the Eastern Roman Empire, what we now call Byzantium.

In 1460 Mystras was captured by the Ottomans and with the short exceptions of 1464, when Sigismondo Malatesta of Rimini capture the city but not the castle, and 1687-1715 that it came under the control of the Venetians, the Turks held in until the Greek War of Independence in 1821, when it was one of the first castles of Greece to be liberated.

While under the Otto rule, people fled from this rocky terrain, seeking better places to build houses, that would allow them to cultivate earth. This led to many early scholars and western travelers belief that these were the ruins of ancient Sparta, thus turning the town into a sightseeing place. When Greece became independent, people knew what Mystras was, however it still was dropped in favour of the modern-day Sparta and its ruins were left unattended.

Today, a walk on Mystras helps us better understand the elaborate Christian art during Byzantium, and finding from here have helped historians better define periods of the Empire. One can visit the Metropolis of Mystras, the Hodigitria church, Upper and Middle City, the gates and countless more sites.

Better visit Mystras on an afternoon or early in the morning, better yet, skip it during a hot day and prefer a cloudy one that will help you during your strolling among the pebbled streets. Comfy shoes and light fabrics are mandatory, as is a bottle of cold water, that will prove essential!

Cuban cuisine has a very distinct palette of flavours, as it the result of native ingredients, Caribbean dishes, Spanish colonists, neighbouring French colonists, African slaves, as well as Arabic, Chinese, and Portuguese cultures. It has really strong similarities with the cuisine of Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic, since all islands have similar climate, produce the same or similar fruits, vegetables and roots, they all rely heavily on fishing. Also they all went through common historical changes, until the 20th century.

During colonial times, many Spaniards made Cuba their home, as the island served as an important port for trade. They brought with them ingredients, herbs and spices that were new and untasted, along with new tools to cook their favourite dishes. Spaniards liked their food fried, now many Cuban dishes are fried, east of Spain is a rice area, further establishing the dominance of rice in Cuban cuisine.

Cuban cooking relies on natural specific ingredients, scarce spices such as garlic, cumin, oregano, and bay laurel leaves limiting the use of pepper and other hot spices. The most typical dish would simply be rice and beans, either cooked together or apart. Together the recipe is called “Moros y Cristianos" (Moors and Christians) and separately it’s "Arroz con/y Frijoles" (rice with/and beans). The main course would be pork with a light tomato-based sauce or fish and rarely there could be a small side salad with lettuce, tomato and avocado. Desserts could be flan, bread or rize pudding.

Most dishes will taste rather sweet and more like a variation of something you already have tasted it before, but that’s what makes Cuban cuisine so unique, it cooks everything differently and with a new caribbean twist, making every bite different!

The small European country that has been making headlines for its defiance to many proposed austerity measures, has actually been put in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons! It’s economy was never strong and, being blatantly honest, Greece doesn’t really produce anything. So, how come they’ve managed so far and expect to overcome even this terrible recession that has lasted over half a decade? One word: Tourism (ok, maybe 3, Tourism and Shipping).

The small country has shined for millennia, since its prime location has allowed it to be part of the global history, more than once or twice. It lies in the cross of Europe, Asia, Africa and the Middle East, thus serving as a trading point for all the great civilizations that flourished on all these regions. But Greeks took trading one step forward!

They expanded around Mediterranean and in the process created one of the most important civilizations that ever existed, giving their enlightenment to modern day Western Live, Politics, Ethics and Culture. What they also did was utilise in the best possible way their region, creating settlements on all their beautiful islands, no matter how fertile or barren the were, and building temples to worship Gods on the most breathtaking places, since only Gods must have been able to create such beauty!

That is the case with most of Greece, be it Mykonos, Santorini, Crete or even Athens. You may see a modern-day concrete jungle, but even this jungle has a certain fascinating charm to it. On top of the Acropolis -literally the edge or peak of town- you suddenly don’t just admire the Ancient monument, but fall in love with the Greek capital, its location, its history and of course its people.

Considering you’ll take the non-existing chance of a GREXIT, and visit Greece, where should you go, where should you stay and what should you do? Well it really depends on what you really like, but most likely you’ll love it anywhere.

My Santorini by Jono Cusack

Santorini, a beacon of light and hope for Greece in the middle of the Cyclades. The island is typical of paradise with incredible views, spectacular beaches, and supposedly, the occasional beautiful woman. The only thing missing, was everyone else.

It was 5am at Piraeus Port, I was curled around my backpack, clinging to anything that could provide a hint of warmth. The sun had yet to reveal itself. There was a small, select group of passengers huddled around the gangway ready to board the ferry to Santorini. Be they Greek or from somewhere in Eastern Europe was impossible to say under the glow of the streetlights. The alarm sounded to board. I picked myself up with the back of an eighty year old carpenter and joined the dwindling queue of passengers.

As we disembarked, the ferry was less than a third full at best. The complimentary coffee in the galley remained untouched throughout the entire journey. The water was smooth and took the better part of the day travelling through the crystal blue to reach the shear cliff face of Santorini. A white Holden Berlina driven by a short, rotund balled man called Alex awaited me. We travelled up the gradient towards the capital Fira, and my hotel.

Santorini is as the photos depict. A place where shots taken with even a disposable camera can be on page nine of National Geographic. We passed very few cars on the ten minute ride. It was clear I was the only guest as we pulled into the renovated townhouse that was my hotel. Alex left me alone with my backpack and a pair of keys to room 4F. I opened the shutters to my two single-bed room and looked out over the courtyard. The silence was haunting, not even the limited traffic from the main road could cut through the atmosphere. Fearing the ghosts of the ancient Minoans, I left to find that one vantage point which Santorini is known for.

It was easy enough; the paved paths of Fira all lead towards to the same edge of the same cliff looking over the island’s sunken centre. I bought a beer from the one corner store I found open and placed myself in position as the sunset only had minutes to live. The island closed in on itself as the sky turned to crimson. To the east and west, the white-chalked walls with blue domes at their peaks appeared as natural a feature as the volcanic peaks at the horizon. Santorini, at this time each day, begs any onlooker to fall in love. I was quite obviously alone, not just from those to fall in love with, but from any human contact at all.

It was closing time, everywhere. I stopped at a place with twenty quad bikes standing at attention. Not one had been rented. The owner opened a book that was more ancient tome than diary and placed my name in there for 8am the following morning. I had to ask, the one question that was on my mind since I arrived.

- 'Where was everybody?'
- 'This is off-season, very few people this time of year.'

I had the island to myself.

The next morning. At speeds illegal anywhere else in the world but Europe, I explored the entire place in a day. The few locals around were entirely negligent to the fact that I was walking through their homes. Black Beach and Red Beach were entirely uninhabited. It was warm, I had the company of several stray dogs. I looked out at the water coming in to the black sand and thought, '...is it still a nude beach if you are the only person nude?' Beaches and white washed walls passed into each other. The archaeological site of Akrotiri was of course, closed. The entire day felt as though I was discovering every ride of an abandoned amusement park.

In a circumnavigation of the island I reached Fira yet again. I returned the bike to no one and left the keys in the letterbox. Fortune would have it that the gyros shop had opened for the evening. I found the same spot for that same celestial view. Without anyone there, it felt like for the smallest amount of time I had ownership of that view. The volcano of Santorini was mine.

For many people visiting Athens is a once in a lifetime affair and seeing one of the most magnificent places ever built in the world is an absolute must.

But to really enjoy visiting Athens Acropolis, we have gathered some tips that will help you to have everything in order and make your trip even better. There are many ways you can get from the port of Piraeus to Athens’ Acropolis. Taking one of the organized tours is just one of the options like some Athens shore excursions.

If you visit Greece in the summer, we recommend to arrive at the Acropolis when the gates open (8 a.m.) or in the late afternoon.

Get there early: if you decide to take a taxi or take a metro Athens train from Piraeus to Athens, you have one big advantage before those on the organized shore excursions. At the end of your tour, don’t miss a chance to visit the terrace-bar-restaurant and gaze at the spectacular view. I had a very good meal there (baked eggplant with tomatoes, a delicious puree of beans from Santorini with lemon and caper leaves). It is probably more expensive than a “souvlaki” from a street vendor, but it is just as convenient and by far more delicious.

Three wonderfull days in Chania Crete

Have you ever swum in a lake? If not, then here's your chance. Set off for Lake Kournas, where you can swim in the organized beaches formed here every summer. If lake swimming is not your thing, then no need to ignore this unique setting in Crete. Just go for a walk around the lake and sip your evening coffee in any of the lakeside cafes.

To get a local taste and experience the traditional Cretan culture you might have to drive about an hour and visit small towns and villages that still maintain the old Cretan aroma. Agia Roumeli, Chora Sfakion and Palaiochora boast great beaches to soak up the sun, the sea and the sand; local taverns serving mouthwatering dishes; and last but not least buildings of the olde Cretan architecture. If you are looking for lively nightlife then Palaiochora is your choice. Restful travelers would better head to Agia Roumeli for fantastic views or Chora Sfakion for absolute relaxation.

And for active guests who'd like to have a more energizing day, a visit to the world famous gorge of Samaria is a must! Depending on your pace and stamina your hiking tour through the gorge will take about 6 hours, especially if you want to capture your every moments in this fantastic geological formation. The gorge is 40km from the city of Chania and visitors should keep in mind to wear light clothes and comfortable shoes, along with their hats and sunglasses!

A less known, yet equally challenging gorge is the one in Therisso village, 15km away from Chania. Here visitors can savor the rich flavored Cretan delicacies in the tavernas found there. If you are lucky enough you might even get the chance to see some of Crete's indigenous goats, called Kri-Kri.

There are a couple of things that make Crete stand head and shoulders above other Greek Islands for hiking of trekking. Samaria Gorge

Crete provides thousands of possibilities for hikers and walkers. The spectacular White Mountain range in Chania has peaks over 2,000m in altitude and is a relatively easy hike. Psiloritis Mountain in Rethymno however is the tallest mountain in Crete and a much more demanding route.

On the other hand, gorges are easier for hiking and walking. The Samaria Gorge in Chania is practically world famous and the island has plenty of visitors who come just to see it! There are many organized tours that will take you through the gorge in five to seven hours. A lesser known gorge, Preveli can be found tucked away on the southern coast near Rethymno. A true paradise, it’s one of the prettiest gorges on the island. The river is lined with palm trees that forms the mouth of the gorge which ends in the sea. Simply follow the path by the river for the most incredible scenery.

Just a couple of top tips: Remember that when walking or hiking, your body spends a great amount of energy. Eating and drinking water is the best defense against exhaustion and dehydration. You’ll need to add lots of healthy food to your diet and eat more for at least two days before your walk. Thankfully Crete cuisine is one of the healthiest and more nutritious diets in the world, so finding a good meal on the island is not an issue!

The Greek Island of Skopelos, second biggest island of the Sporades complex after Skiathos, is one of the most beautiful, below-the-radar islands, also famous for reviving century old traditions. Some of the island’s customs date back to the Ancient Greek era and a visit here is like stepping back in time. The low season period is an ideal time to take advantage of the mild, sunny winters, as well as immerse yourself in all these historic traditions.

Autumn – end of summer time
During the two-month period of October and November, people of Skopelos finally find some time to get a rest after the busy tourist period. However, it’s not that they’ll be able to put their feet up for too long, as the olive harvest starts and is a full-on family affair. In fact most villages work together and happiness is spread all around the island.

It’s Christmas time!
Christmas might not be the biggest holiday, like the Greek Orthodox Easter, but it’s a time when families and friends get together, relatives come home to Greece from all over the world and the festive spirit arrives much earlier than the actual celebration. The Christmas period starts on December 6th, name day of Aghios Nikolaos (St. Nicolas). All houses, pastry shops, bakeries and eating outlets, are filled with traditional Christmas treats and pastries made by the accomplished mothers and fathers of Skopelos. Some of the traditional delicacies of Skopelos you should try are chamali – a sweet in the shape of a star, heart or half moon made of ground almonds and sugar, sweets made from local fruit, such as plums, chestnuts and figs (also known as spoon sweets), and last but not least the spiral tyropita, a Skopelos original. Skopelos is indeed a foodie’s paradise!

The overall Christmas atmosphere makes people feel relaxed and life seems to slow down. Skopelos town is beautifully adorned with the usual Christmas decorations, but what you won’t find anywhere else in the Christmas celebrating countries around the world is a miniature wooden ship decorated with colourful lights and put in the front window of every house or building. This is a custom that stems from the tradition of Greece in navigation. Also, every year local businesses together with the town hall organise annual Christmas parties and social events in which big and smaller children can take part.

The carnival period

Since the ancient times, the Greeks have dressed up in masquerade masks to honour the God Dionysus. Nowadays, the carnival is organized annually in late February or early March. People are dressed up in crazy costumes and throw parties all over the island. The island is completely transformed and gets into a truly crazy mood. Festivities reach their peak on Trata day. Townsfolk pretend to be seafarers and carry smoke-spewing bamboo boats around the town. The ladies and the kids sing funny songs and neighbours offer food and drinks to the participants. A big celebration takes place on this day. Finally, they end up into the sea sailing their boats to take their revenge on pirate invasions of the past.

The Greek Easter
As it is said Easter in Skopelos is not to be missed as the spirit of the Passion Week is greatly intense on Good Friday and Holy Saturday. On Holy Thursday night, there are women covering a wooden structure resembling Christ’s tomb, called Epitaphios, with flowers, in procession to every church. On Good Friday night the locals carry a plain brown candle which symbolizes the death of Jesus and follow the procession of Epitaphios. Parishes compete with each other in a friendly way about the best decoration. On Holy Saturday night people go to the church and attend the service dedicated to the Christ’s resurrection. At midnight the bells ring and everybody exclaims Christos Anesti meaning that Christ has risen from the dead. The priest offers the congregation the Light of Eternal Life, and this flame is passed from person to person uniting the whole community. People take their candles home and sign a cross on the front door of the house, so it is blessed for the following year. Then a traditional soup mageiritsa (made from lamb offal) is served and so the feast begins with the spinned lamb on Easter Sunday, as well as traditional dancing.

A magical summer

People in Skopelos wait for the summer with great anticipation. They eagerly want to dive in the crystal clear sea water and spend long lazy days on the beach, sunbathing, playing ball or hanging at a beach bar knocking back a cocktail. Skopelos is the island where the film Mamma Mia was shot, as well as a place where the wedding of your dreams could be held.
