The store’s design, masterminded by Loewe’s Creative Director Jonathan Anderson, transforms the shopping experience into a journey through the brand’s aesthetic universe. The interior features a curated selection of art and craft pieces that reflect Loewe’s commitment to craftsmanship and creativity. From handwoven textiles to bespoke ceramics, every element of the store is thoughtfully chosen to resonate with the brand’s identity.

Anderson’s vision for Casa Loewe Seoul goes beyond mere retail; it’s about creating a cultural hub that connects the brand’s rich Spanish heritage with the vibrant energy of Seoul. “We wanted to create a space that feels like a home—a place where people can experience the art and craft that are so central to Loewe’s philosophy,” Anderson said. The store’s eclectic mix of materials and textures, including oak, stone, and leather, further enhances this sense of warmth and intimacy.

One thing has become clear in recent years with online purchases – if you’re not answering
customer questions seamlessly and helping them on their purchasing journey, your site can
easily end up a non-starter.

You can have all the technical SEO perfected, but if customers don’t enjoy using your site
and bounce quickly, Google will soon push you down the rankings.

Here I’ve handpicked five e-commerce sites that exemplify great design with design features
with the customer in mind, ensuring longer and more successful sessions and conversions.

These links allow users to effortlessly explore related products within the same category or collection, such as matching gear, complementary items, or similar alternatives. By providing easy access to related products, MoreSports.com ensures that users can find everything they need without having to conduct multiple searches or navigate back to the main menu.

Featured highlight: Collection links on product pages.

Benefit: This feature significantly improves the user experience by simplifying navigation and making it easier for customers to discover additional products. It also strengthens site interlinking, which can enhance SEO performance by increasing the time users spend on the site and the number of internal links. This not only aids in better search engine rankings but also encourages users to make more informed purchasing decisions.

2. In-depth reviews

GearHungry.com<use href="#wpil-svg-outbound-5-icon-path"></use> is a review site that offers a curated selection of gadgets, gear, and apparel for the modern adventurer. Known for its unique product offerings and engaging content, GearHungry.com aims to deliver a personalised shopping experience.

Featured highlight: In depth reviews

Benefit: Many ecommerce sites suffer from a lack of detail – GearHungry remedy this by providing as much as possible, along with high quality original images. Providing pros and cons gives the reviews grounding and realism – not every product you sell is going to be perfect, but by being honest about their abilities and limits, you will find the right customers and in turn slash return rates.

3. High-quality imagery and detailed descriptions

Each product page features multiple high-quality images from different angles, including lifestyle shots that show the products in use.

Featured highlight: High-resolution product images and in-depth descriptions.

Benefit: The use of high-quality lifestyle visuals and detailed descriptions helps users make informed purchasing decisions. The site is also making use of advanced video and CSS techniques that make it much easier for a customer to connect with the brand’s style and mission – like the great video on their About page. Products like the Rover Double-Knee Work Pant have great descriptions that not only give you factory specs, but sell the ideal conditions and settings for these – you can already see yourself crossing the crags in these.

4. Elegant design for high-ticket items

Uncrate.com<use href="#wpil-svg-outbound-5-icon-path"></use> stands out with its clean, sophisticated design that complements the high-value items it features. The site employs a minimalist aesthetic, with high-quality visuals and a streamlined layout that highlights each product’s premium nature.

Featured highlight: Elegant website design reflecting high-ticket items.

Benefit: The elegant design enhances the overall shopping experience by reflecting the exclusivity and quality of the products. It not only attracts affluent customers but also reinforces the perceived value of the high-ticket items, creating a compelling and upscale shopping environment. This thoughtful design approach helps build brand prestige and fosters customer confidence in making substantial purchases.

With over 20 years in the industry and a proven track record of success, Jared reveals the systems, processes, and strategies that have helped him scale multiple businesses.

We distilled his insights into actionable steps that you can implement right away to optimize your processes, enhance productivity, and achieve sustainable growth.

1. Building a strong foundation for your agency

Specialize and niche down

Jared emphasizes the importance of specialization. By focusing on SEO and not diluting efforts with paid ads or other unrelated services, his agency, 201 Creative, has carved out a niche that attracts referrals and builds a strong reputation.

Specializing allows you to develop deep expertise and offer superior services to your clients.

Understand your clientele

Most of 201 Creative’s clients are small to medium-sized businesses (SMBs)<use href="#wpil-svg-outbound-5-icon-path"></use>, often local businesses or e-commerce and SaaS companies. Knowing your target market helps tailor your services to meet their specific needs and sets the foundation for long-term relationships.

Remote and flexible team structure

201 Creative operates with a remote team, allowing flexibility and access to a broader talent pool. This setup helps manage costs and provides team members with the autonomy to work from anywhere, enhancing job satisfaction and productivity.

2. Daily systems and processes for optimal productivity

Systems and processes are a huge key to scaling a company. Bauman often shares insights on this in his weekly newsletter Weekend Growth<use href="#wpil-svg-outbound-5-icon-path"></use>. Here are the key elements.

Structured weekly schedule

Jared Bauman’s structured weekly schedule is a masterclass in time management and productivity. By organizing his week into distinct themes, Jared ensures that each day has a clear focus, which minimizes context-switching and maximizes efficiency.

Monday: This day is intentionally left free from meetings to allow for strategic thinking and long-term planning. Jared uses this time for vision casting, brainstorming new ideas, and tackling any high-level challenges the agency might be facing. This flexibility also allows him to address any urgent issues that arose over the weekend, providing a buffer to handle unexpected tasks without derailing the rest of his week.

Tuesday & Wednesday: These days are packed with meetings, both internal and with clients. By clustering meetings on these two days, Jared ensures that the rest of the week remains free for deep work. Internal meetings might include team check-ins, project updates, and strategy sessions, while client meetings are focused on reviewing progress, discussing strategy, and addressing any questions or concerns.

Thursday: Reserved exclusively for podcasting and interviews, Thursday is dedicated to Jared’s role as a thought leader. Hosting the Niche Pursuits podcast requires preparation, recording, and post-production work. By setting aside a full day, Jared can focus on delivering high-quality content without the distraction of other tasks.

Friday: Task day is all about execution. Jared uses Fridays to catch up on any tasks that require his attention, work on ongoing projects, and push initiatives forward. This day is also a time for reflection, where Jared reviews the week’s progress and plans for the upcoming week.

Early morning focus

Starting his day at 5:30 AM, Jared leverages the quiet, distraction-free hours of the morning for high-priority tasks. This early start allows him to tackle the most challenging and important work while his mind is fresh and focused.

During these first two hours of the day, Jared might work on complex client issues, strategic planning, or high-level problem-solving.

Jared’s morning routine is designed to maximize productivity and set a positive tone for the rest of the day. After this initial work session, he spends time with his family, having breakfast with his kids and helping them start their day.

This integration of personal and professional time ensures that Jared maintains a healthy work-life balance.

Balancing family and work

Family time is a crucial component of Jared’s daily routine. By prioritizing his family in the morning, Jared not only strengthens his personal relationships but also ensures that he starts the day with a sense of fulfillment and balance.

This approach highlights the importance of work-life harmony, demonstrating that success in business does not have to come at the expense of personal well-being.

3. Client management and interaction

Monthly check-ins

Regular, structured communication is key to maintaining strong client relationships. Jared schedules 30-minute monthly check-ins with each client to review key performance indicators (KPIs)<use href="#wpil-svg-outbound-5-icon-path"></use>, discuss progress, and address any questions or concerns.

These meetings are critical for maintaining transparency and ensuring that both the client and the agency are aligned on goals and expectations.

The format of these check-ins is designed to be efficient and focused. By keeping these meetings to 30 minutes, Jared ensures that they remain productive and to the point.

Clients appreciate the regular updates and the opportunity to ask questions, which helps build trust and confidence in the agency’s work.

Detailed preparation

Preparation is a cornerstone of 201 Creative’s approach to client meetings. For each scheduled call, the team prepares a detailed agenda and set of notes, which are stored in a shared Google Doc within the client’s repository.

This document is reviewed by all participants ahead of the meeting to ensure everyone is on the same page.

The preparation process is thorough and involves collaboration between team members. The SEO strategist and client managers work together to compile relevant data, insights, and updates, which are then reviewed by Jared.

This meticulous preparation ensures that the team is ready to address any client queries and demonstrate their expertise, fostering trust and satisfaction.

Education and empowerment

Jared believes that clients should never make decisions they do not understand. This educational approach is especially important in the complex world of SEO, where strategies and tactics can often seem opaque.

During monthly check-ins and other interactions, Jared takes the time to explain the reasoning behind recommendations and the expected outcomes.

By educating clients, Jared empowers them to make informed decisions and actively participate in the strategy. This approach not only builds trust but also helps clients feel more invested in the process, leading to better collaboration and more successful outcomes.

Handling one-off meetings

In addition to regular check-ins, Jared’s team also conducts one-off meetings to address specific issues or projects. For example, if a technical audit reveals issues that need to be discussed with the client’s development team, a dedicated call will be scheduled to align on the necessary steps.

These one-off meetings are carefully planned and can be managed either by the client manager alone or with Jared’s involvement, depending on the complexity and strategic importance of the issue.

This flexibility ensures that the right expertise is brought to bear on each problem, optimizing the chances of a successful resolution.

4. Handling priorities and delegation

The Eisenhower Matrix

Jared Bauman uses the Eisenhower Matrix, a time management tool developed by former U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower, to prioritize tasks based on their urgency and importance. This method helps in making clear distinctions between what needs immediate attention and what can be scheduled or delegated.

The Eisenhower Matrix consists of four quadrants<use href="#wpil-svg-outbound-5-icon-path"></use>:

Urgent and important: Tasks that require immediate action. These are critical issues that need to be addressed to avoid significant negative consequences. For example, resolving a major website outage for a client.

Important but not urgent: Tasks that are important for long-term success but do not require immediate action. These tasks should be scheduled and worked on proactively. For example, planning a new content strategy or developing a new service offering.

Urgent but not important: Tasks that need immediate attention but do not contribute significantly to long-term goals. These tasks are often distractions and can be delegated to others. For example, responding to routine email inquiries or handling administrative tasks.

Not Urgent and not important: Tasks that are neither important nor urgent. These tasks are often time-wasters and should be minimized or eliminated. For example, unnecessary meetings or excessive social media browsing.

By categorizing tasks into these quadrants, Jared ensures that he focuses on high-priority activities that drive the most value for his business. This approach helps him manage his time effectively and avoid getting bogged down by less critical tasks.

Delegating effectively

Effective delegation is a key aspect of Jared’s leadership style. He believes in empowering his team to take ownership of tasks and make decisions, which not only builds their skills but also frees up his time to focus on higher-level strategic work.

Steps to effective delegation

Identify tasks to delegate: Jared identifies tasks that can be delegated based on their importance and urgency. Tasks that are important but not urgent, or urgent but not important, are prime candidates for delegation.

Choose the right person: Jared carefully selects team members based on their skills, experience, and capacity. He ensures that the person taking on the task has the necessary resources and support to succeed.

Set clear expectations: Clear communication is crucial for effective delegation. Jared outlines the specific goals, deadlines, and deliverables for each task, ensuring that the team member understands what is expected.

Provide resources and support: Jared ensures that the delegated tasks come with the necessary resources and support. This might include access to tools, information, or additional training.

Follow up and provide feedback: Regular check-ins and feedback are essential to track progress and address any challenges. Jared provides constructive feedback to help team members improve and succeed in their roles.

Encouraging ownership and buy-in

Jared fosters a culture of ownership and accountability within his team. By involving team members in decision-making processes and encouraging them to propose solutions, he ensures that they are invested in the outcomes.

This approach not only enhances their commitment but also leads to better solutions, as team members are often closer to the issues and understand them more deeply.

Empowerment in practice

Problem-solving: When a team member brings an issue to Jared, he first asks for their proposed solution. This practice encourages critical thinking and problem-solving skills, empowering team members to take initiative and responsibility.

Decision-making: Jared involves his team in strategic decisions, ensuring that they have a voice in the direction of the business. This collaborative approach builds a sense of ownership and aligns the team with the company’s goals.

Recognition and reward: Acknowledging and rewarding team members for their contributions reinforces a culture of ownership. Jared recognizes the efforts and successes of his team, motivating them to continue taking initiative and delivering high-quality work.

Balancing immediate and long-term priorities

Jared’s approach to prioritization involves balancing immediate tasks with long-term strategic goals. By using the Eisenhower Matrix and effective delegation, he ensures that urgent issues are addressed promptly without neglecting important long-term objectives.

Balancing techniques

Strategic planning: Jared allocates specific times for strategic planning and high-level thinking. By dedicating Monday as a free day for strategic tasks, he ensures that long-term priorities are not overshadowed by day-to-day operations.

Time blocking: Jared uses time blocking<use href="#wpil-svg-outbound-5-icon-path"></use> to allocate dedicated time slots for different types of tasks. This method helps him maintain focus on high-priority activities and ensures that strategic projects receive adequate attention.

Regular reviews: Regularly reviewing and adjusting priorities is essential for staying on track. Jared conducts weekly reviews to assess progress, realign goals, and adjust his schedule as needed to ensure that both immediate and long-term priorities are balanced.

Creating a culture of continuous improvement

Jared’s emphasis on prioritization and delegation is part of a broader culture of continuous improvement at 201 Creative. By constantly evaluating and refining processes, Jared ensures that the agency operates efficiently and effectively, delivering the best possible results for clients.

Continuous improvement practices

Feedback loops: Jared encourages feedback from clients and team members to identify areas for improvement. This feedback is used to refine processes, enhance services, and address any issues promptly.

Process optimization: Regularly reviewing and optimizing processes helps eliminate inefficiencies and improve performance. Jared and his team analyze workflows, identify bottlenecks, and implement changes to streamline operations.

Training and development: Investing in team development is crucial for continuous improvement. Jared provides ongoing training and development opportunities to ensure that team members stay current with industry trends and continuously improve their skills.

Conclusion

Jared Bauman’s approach to running an SEO agency is a blend of strategic specialization, meticulous planning, and client-centric service.

By implementing the systems and processes outlined in this guide, you can enhance your agency’s productivity, build stronger client relationships, and achieve sustained business growth.

Whether you’re an agency owner or a business looking to improve your SEO efforts, Jared’s insights offer a practical roadmap to success.

Every successful SaaS product starts with a deep understanding of its users. To design a product that people truly love and use, you must first know who those people are, what they need, and their problems. This is where the design process begins.

So how do you understand your users?

Step 1: Define your ideal customer

Think of your ideal customer as a real person, not just a statistic. Who are they? What are their demographics (age, gender, location, etc.)? What are their interests, values, and behaviors? The more specific you can get, the better. This detailed profile will help you tailor your product to their needs and preferences.

But how do you find this information?

Talk to Potential Users: Conduct interviews or surveys to gather firsthand insights.

Analyze Competitors: See who they’re targeting and what needs they’re addressing.

Leverage Social Media: Look for discussions and trends related to your industry or problem space.

Step 2: Create user personas

User personas are fictional characters that represent different segments of your target audience. They help you humanize your users and make design decisions with real people in mind. To create a persona, give them a name, a background story, goals, motivations, frustrations, and even a photo.

Here’s an example:

“Michael, a 30-year-old freelance copywriter in New York City, loves his creative work but struggles with the administrative side. Juggling projects, clients, and finances leaves him overwhelmed and missing deadlines. He needs an affordable, intuitive project management tool to simplify his workflow and regain control.”

Creating detailed personas like this gives you a clear picture of who you’re designing for, making it easier to tailor your product to their needs.

Step 3: Uncover their pain points

Now that you know who you’re designing for, dig deeper into their problems. What specific pain points or challenges are they facing that your SaaS product can address?

Let’s revisit our persona, Michael:

“Michael needs a project management tool that:

Allows him to track project timelines and deadlines easily.

Helps him manage client communication and feedback.

Provides a centralized hub for storing project files and assets.”

By identifying these specific pain points, you can start envisioning how your product will solve them, laying the groundwork for designing your features and user experience.

“Empathy plays a pivotal role in building SaaS products. Understanding user needs and pain points, and embedding these insights into product design, forms the crux for product success. Picture this, our job is to be the users’ ally, designing not what is convenient for us, but what solves their problems effortlessly.”

Pavel Naydenov<use href="#wpil-svg-outbound-5-icon-path"></use>, Head оf Marketing at Businessmap<use href="#wpil-svg-outbound-5-icon-path"></use>

Craft a message that resonates

Once you clearly understand your users, the next thing is to define what makes your SaaS product unique and how to communicate that value effectively. This is the essence of crafting a message that resonates with your target audience.

The following steps show how to achieve this:

Step 1: Find your unique advantage

In the competitive SaaS market, it’s crucial to identify what sets your product apart. This is your Unique Selling Proposition (USP)—the distinct advantage that makes your product the best choice for your ideal customer.

Think of it this way: Why should someone choose your product over the numerous alternatives available? Is it your innovative features, exceptional customer support, competitive pricing, or a unique combination of these factors?

To pinpoint your USP, ask yourself these questions:

What problem does your product solve better than any other solution?

What unique features or benefits does your product offer?

How can you quantify or demonstrate the value your product brings to customers?

For example, if you’re designing a SaaS product for project management, your USP might be “the most intuitive project management platform for remote teams.” This statement highlights the product’s target audience and emphasizes its ease of use, a key differentiator in a competitive market.

Step 2: Tell a compelling story

Once you’ve identified your USP, craft a narrative that resonates with your target audience. This means going beyond simply listing features and focusing on the benefits and transformation your product brings to users.

Think of it as storytelling: How does your product help your ideal customer overcome challenges, achieve goals, or improve their lives? Use vivid language, real-world examples, and testimonials to paint a picture of the positive impact your product can have.

Consider this example:

“We empower small business owners to take control of their finances, so they can focus on what they do best—running their business.”

This statement emphasizes the product’s core benefit (financial control) and connects with the emotional aspirations of small business owners.

“When packaging the product message, I’ve learned that clarity trumps everything. It’s about resonating with your target audience, yes, but in a way that demystifies the product, not complicating it. I always ask my team, ‘Would our grandmother understand this?'”

Design a user experience that delights

With a deep understanding of your users and a compelling message in place, it’s time to focus on your SaaS product’s user experience (UX).

First impressions are crucial, and research<use href="#wpil-svg-outbound-5-icon-path"></use> shows that 94% of the factors influencing a user’s initial perception are design-related. Thus, a well-designed user interface (UI) and seamless UX are essential for attracting and retaining users.

Let’s break down the key elements of a delightful SaaS UX into steps:

Step 1: Prioritize clarity and simplicity

The first step towards a great UX is to make your product easy to understand and use. This means:

Clear Labels and Instructions: Use plain language and avoid jargon. Make sure labels and instructions are clear and concise.

Intuitive Navigation: Make it easy for users to find what they need. Use clear and logical menu structures, signposts, and intuitive search functionality.

Visual Hierarchy: Use visual cues like size, color, and contrast to help users understand the importance of different elements on the page.

Consistent Design: Maintain a consistent visual language throughout your product. This includes colors, fonts, icons, and overall layout.

Bench’s<use href="#wpil-svg-outbound-5-icon-path"></use> intuitive interface makes it easy to understand and use.

Step 2: Craft a Smooth and Enjoyable User Journey

A great UX is more than just a pretty interface. It’s about creating a seamless and enjoyable journey for your users from start to finish. This includes:

Optimized Onboarding: Make the initial setup process as smooth as possible. Offer helpful tutorials, tips, and walkthroughs to guide new users.

Streamlined Workflows: Identify the most common tasks users will perform and make them as efficient as possible. Reduce friction and eliminate unnecessary steps.

Excellent Support: Offer multiple channels for support (e.g., live chat, email, knowledge base) and make it easy for users to get help when needed.

Helpful Feedback: Provide users with feedback and guidance along the way. Use tooltips, error messages, and progress indicators to keep them informed.

Personalization: Tailor the experience to individual users by offering customizable settings and preferences.

A smooth user journey increases engagement and encourages users to stick around. Below is an excellent example

Slack<use href="#wpil-svg-outbound-5-icon-path"></use> offers a smooth user journey.

Step 3: Plan for growth

As your product grows, your UX will need to evolve with it.

Here are some tips for designing for scalability:

Modular Design: Break down your product into smaller, independent modules that can be easily updated or replaced without affecting the entire system.

Cloud Infrastructure: Use cloud-based services that can scale resources up or down as needed.

Performance Optimization: Ensure your product performs well under heavy load. Optimize code, database queries, and network resources.

Data-Driven Decisions: Collect and analyze user data to identify areas for improvement and inform future design decisions.

Step 4: Prioritize security & privacy

Security and privacy are essential for building trust with your users. Ensure this for your product via:

Robust Encryption: Use strong encryption to protect user data.

Regular Security Audits: Conduct regular security assessments to identify and address potential vulnerabilities.

Transparent Privacy Policies: Communicate clearly how you collect and use user data.

By focusing on these key elements, you can design a user experience that delights users, encourages them to keep coming back, and ultimately drives the growth of your SaaS product.

“Creating a delightful user experience for a SaaS product starts with clearly defining the product, who it helps, and the unique method through which it enables users to achieve their goals. This clarity allows you to build a seamless experience tailored to your users. Lastly, make it easy for users to perform their tasks without needing to think twice about how it works or what to do.”

Designing a SaaS product isn’t a linear process; it’s a continuous cycle of creation, testing, learning, and refining. This iterative approach allows you to continue enhancing your product using real-world feedback and data.

Here are the steps involved:

Step 1: Start with a sketch

Before you jump into coding, take a moment to visualize your product’s structure and layout. Start by creating simple sketches or wireframes—visual representations of your product’s interface. This will help you map out the placement of buttons, menus, content areas, and other key elements.

Wireframes don’t need to be fancy. You can create them using pen and paper, whiteboards, or simple online tools. The goal is to get your ideas out of your head and onto something tangible that you can refine.

Step 2: Build a minimum viable product (MVP)

A Minimum Viable Product (MVP) is a stripped-down version of your product that includes only the core features necessary to solve your users’ most pressing problems. Its purpose is to test your assumptions, gather feedback from real users, and validate your product idea before investing in full-scale development.

Think of it as a prototype that you can quickly put in front of potential customers to gauge their interest and gather valuable insights. Building an MVP allows you to test the waters without committing significant resources, making it a smart strategy for early-stage SaaS startups.

Step 3: Test, learn, and improve

Once your MVP is ready, it’s time to gather feedback from real users. This crucial step allows you to see how people interact with your product and identify areas for improvement.

There are many ways to gather feedback, including:

User interviews: Talk to users one-on-one to get their thoughts and opinions.

Surveys: Send out surveys to gather quantitative and qualitative feedback from a larger group of users.

Beta testing: Invite a select group of users to test your product in a real-world setting.

Analytics: Track user behavior within your product to see how they use it and where they get stuck.

Use this feedback to iterate on your design, making changes and improvements based on what you learn. Remember, the goal is to continue improving your product to serve your users better.

“In managing a SaaS product, iteration is key. Rapid changes based on constructive feedback help us stay on top of the game. We believe in ‘launch, learn, and iterate’, thus remaining fluid, and flexible in improving our product.”

Your SaaS product’s success hinges on design

Learning how to design a SaaS product begins with understanding your users, crafting a compelling message, and creating an intuitive user experience. Prioritize simplicity, seamless navigation, scalability, and security to build a product that solves problems and delights users.

Remember, design is iterative: continuously gather feedback, adapt, and refine your product to meet evolving user needs.

With dedication and a user-centric approach, you’ll design a SaaS product that attracts and retains customers, ultimately driving growth and success in a competitive market.

“Creating a product with a superior design that people love is an art—it’s like creating a hit song. It involves understanding the market pulse, measuring it against the company vision, and blending it with a healthy dose of innovation. A great design is about functionality as much as it is about aesthetics.”

“How’s the job hunt going?” asked my father over the phone. It was early May 2017 and I was sitting in front of my laptop, working on some social media graphics for a client in a hotel room in Las Vegas.

I hadn’t originally planned to be on this trip. My husband had been invited to attend a broadcasting convention in town. Suddenly finding myself with extra time on my hands, I couldn’t resist the opportunity to tag along and make a bit of a “workcation” out of it.

My dad’s question hit me like a bucket of cold water to the face as I proudly worked up the unearned confidence to proudly answer: “This is the job! I’m going to be a freelancer now!”

That’s the first time I remember saying those words out loud.

Rage quitting my job

Only days prior, I decided to rage quit what most people, on the outside, would have considered to be a cushy corporate salaried job. And by “rage quit” I mean I finished my shift, walked into my supervisor’s office, and told her I just couldn’t take it anymore.

I left on the spot and never returned. No two-week notice. No real plan. Nada.

Naturally, I needed money. And I needed it fast.

I had never previously viewed freelance graphic design as anything that even closely resembled a viable career path. It was just something I fell into after decades of being “that graphic design” friend. People always came to me asking for favors, offering payment for small gigs here and there.

Sure, freelance design work had always been an easy way of earning a bit of extra cash when I needed it. It was the closest thing one might imagine to having their money tree – saying “yes” to gigs only when in the mood. Never actively seeking the work. Never needing the work, but being glad I had the option.

But now, with the corporate world in my rearview mirror, I found myself wondering what would happen if I leaned in. Could that supplemental income become replacement income? I was about to find out.

From freelance to agency

Looking back on those early days I remember the instinctual way I put on a brave face for both myself and my friends and family. I behaved as if I wasn’t, internally, in full panic mode.

I was my own living “Emporer With No Clothes” fable. I was fully aware of my exposure and vulnerability but confidently maintained to anyone who inquired that everything was totally “fine,” More than fine even – couldn’t be better!

I immediately reached out to all of my old design contacts and made my intentions known. I let everyone know I was available for work and I signed up for a multitude of online freelance marketplaces.

As the “new kid on the block,” I temporarily lowered my rate to a mere $20 an hour – a rate of pay I hadn’t seen in over a decade – and prayed that the jobs would start to trickle in.

And slowly, as if I had built my own digital “Field of Dreams” … they came.

At first, it was just a trickle.

But soon, that trickle became a stream – a stream that would soon become a raging river.

Becoming my own investor

Years ago, I would have told you that was the happy ending to my story. I got everything I wanted.

I quit a job I had grown to hate. I left the corporate world behind and launched a successful design agency.

But to quote The Little Mermaid (my all-time favorite Disney movie that I’ve probably watched more than 1,000 times as a child) – “I want more”.

I wanted to free myself of the invisible chain that kept me tethered to my laptop every day. I yearned for the freedom to build something for myself – instead of just building for clients.

There are two schools of thought when it comes to raising capital to start a new business.

Some, seek investors or take on debt. Others, invest in themselves.

As someone whose always been somewhat allergic to this idea of building something with someone else’s money and feeling “beholden”, I was naturally drawn to the latter.

And so, I took my agency earnings and reinvested them.

A media company is born

Today, alongside the original graphic design agency, I own and operate a series of content sites that cover everything from local tourism to small business advice – including my latest venture – Freelancer Files<g id="wpil-svg-outbound-5-icon-path">

Today, these companies, alongside my graphic design agency have grossed over $2M – a number that makes me quite proud – especially when I think back to how it all started with that $20 hourly rate on the Upwork profile of a virtual unknown in the industry.

I pen this editorial to show you the power of following your dreams no matter what those dreams may be.

It blows my mind on a daily basis that I was able to take something that I did as a hobby – graphic design – and turn it into a mini-empire that not only employs me but has also employed several members of my friends and family and even gotten us through things like global pandemics.

And the exciting part – I’m just getting started. I cannot wait to see where this journey takes me. From designing social media banners to designing my dream life – the possibilities are truly endless.

Indeed, recent studies suggest that Boyd’s experience is far from unique. A staggering 75% of visitors judge an online shop’s credibility based on its design features alone. Furthermore, 94% of first impressions are design-related, highlighting aesthetics’s critical role in the digital marketplace.

We’ve seen a substantial increase in conversions since moving to Shopify and optimising our site’s navigation and call-to-action buttons.”

England’s insights align with industry best practices. Experts recommend keeping navigation simple and understandable, using clear call-to-actions (CTAs), and providing easy access to important pages such as FAQs and contact information.

It’s a mobile first market now

But the challenge doesn’t end with desktop design. With the rise of mobile shopping, businesses are scrambling to ensure their websites are responsive across all devices. A spokesperson from Hamper With Bite<use href="#wpil-svg-outbound-5-icon-path"></use>, an Australian gift hamper company, notes, “Over 60% of our traffic now comes from mobile devices. We’ve had to completely rethink our design approach, from menu layouts to button sizes.”

Hampers With Bite / www.hamperswithbite.com.au

The spokesperson adds, “We’ve adopted a ‘mobile-first’ strategy, ensuring our site looks great on smartphones before scaling up to larger screens. It’s led to a significant decrease in our bounce rate and an uptick in mobile conversions.”

Colour theory in branding

Colour theory is another crucial aspect of web design that businesses can leverage to their advantage. Ivor Boyd of Boyd Hampers shares, “We’ve experimented with different colour schemes and found that certain combinations resonate more with our target demographic. For instance, using light grey and rich golds has helped reinforce our luxury brand image.”

Indeed, colours can send powerful subliminal messages to consumers. Black often symbolises luxury and exclusivity, while blue conveys trust and professionalism. Green is associated with freshness and wealth, making it a popular choice for eco-friendly or financial products.

David England of Highland Fayre adds, “We’ve found that using earthy greens and rich browns in our design helps reinforce our brand’s connection to Scottish nature and tradition. It’s subtle but makes a difference in how customers perceive our products.”

Balancing innovation with familiarity

However, while following design trends can be beneficial, experts caution against sacrificing familiarity for the sake of uniqueness. The spokesperson from Hamper With Bite explains, “Customers expect certain elements to be in certain places. We focus on standing out through other means, like unique animations or interactive elements, rather than reinventing the wheel when it comes to basic navigation.”

The future of web design in e-commerce

As the e-commerce landscape continues to evolve, so too does the importance of web design. Businesses that invest in creating visually appealing, user-friendly, and mobile-responsive websites are seeing tangible returns on their investment.

The power of good design in online retail

Ivor Boyd concludes, “Your website is often the first point of contact between your brand and potential customers. It’s not just a sales platform; it’s a chance to make a lasting impression.”

From the rolling hills of Scotland to the sun-soaked coasts of Australia, businesses are waking up to the power of good web design. As online shopping continues to grow, those who master the art of digital presentation will likely find themselves at the forefront of the e-commerce revolution.

In the end, it seems that in the world of online retail, beauty is more than skin deep. It’s about creating an experience that resonates with customers, guiding them smoothly from curiosity to purchase, all with the click of a mouse or the tap of a screen. As these industry leaders have shown, in the digital marketplace, good design isn’t just nice to have—it’s essential for success.

O’Connor’s experience is not unique. Across the business world, companies are waking up to the power of design in attracting and converting potential customers. But what exactly makes design so crucial in lead generation?

“It’s all about first impressions,” O’Connor explains. “When someone’s car breaks down, they’re stressed. They need help fast. If our website looks unprofessional or is hard to navigate, they’ll move on to the next service in seconds.”

Indeed, research backs up O’Connor’s intuition. A study by Adobe found that 38% of people will abandon a website if the content or layout is unappealing. In the digital world we live in, businesses can’t afford to ignore the impact of visual appeal.

But it’s not just about looking pretty. Functionality plays a key role too. “We made sure our ‘Call Now’ button was prominent on every page,” O’Connor shares. “It seems simple, but it’s made a world of difference.”

This focus on clear calls-to-action is supported by data from HubSpot<use href="#wpil-svg-outbound-5-icon-path"></use>, which indicates that companies with CTAs on their homepage see a 30% increase in lead capture.

The importance of design extends beyond websites. Social media, email campaigns, and even Google ads all contribute to a business’s overall lead generation strategy. “We’ve worked hard to maintain a consistent look across all our platforms,” O’Connor notes. “It helps build trust with our customers.”

This consistency is crucial. Lucidpress reports that up to 33% of revenue can increase by presenting a consistent brand experience.

For small businesses like Breakdown Recovery Belfast, investing in design can seem daunting. But O’Connor sees it differently. “It’s not an expense, it’s an investment,” he insists. “The returns we’ve seen in terms of new customers have more than justified the cost.”

As businesses continue to navigate the digital landscape, the role of design in lead generation is only set to grow. From creating emotional connections to aiding in search engine optimization, good design is proving to be a multifaceted tool in the marketing arsenal.

O’Connor’s final piece of advice for other small business owners? “Don’t underestimate the power of good design. It’s not just about looking good – it’s about connecting with your customers and making it easy for them to choose you.”

Helen Gaskell explains the reasons why every team needs a content designer and shouldn't be overlooked.

Content is so often overlooked, and it’s a crying shame. As a lead content designer, I know I’m another mouth to feed, another body on an already-packed team – an expensive one, at that. And in the rush to develop eye-catching graphics and attention-grabbing interfaces which steal away the competition, who really cares whether that button says “start” or “continue”?

Every laptop has a keyboard, and the vast majority of us can manage to type out either option. So why on earth pay someone to agonise over it when surely what matters far more is whether the back end works, whether the stakeholders are happy, whether the flow is channelling everyone through that funnel? There aren’t any typos, the whole team has Grammarly installed, and ChatGPT will do the rest, right?

I’m the content design lead on the UK government’s first live AI project, and I’m here to tell you that no, ChatGPT can’t do my job – and I’m not scared of it, not one bit. In fact, I think it’ll need more content designers before it even has a chance of working, but that’s another story.

The fact is, like the nail in the proverbial horseshoe, a typo can bring your kingdom crashing down. Where you place your link in a sentence can send hundreds of users rushing to your phone lines instead of your shiny new contact form, and leaving your product descriptions to a large language model can end in a rush of returned items. Having been doing this for nearly two decades I can assure you that I have seen it all.

The book Content Design by Sarah Richards was printed in 2017, and her definition of content design<g id="wpil-svg-outbound-5-icon-path">
                            <g transform="matrix(0.3,0,0,0.3,-2.4,-2.4)">

</g> still stands: it’s “about using data and evidence to give the audience what they need, at the time they need it and in a way they expect”. What does that mean? Often, it means taking things back to basics.

A content designer uses evidence – user research, scientific methodology, stats – to champion your users. We ask annoying questions, look at the journey you’re asking your users to take, and then we smooth it all out. We write words in the hope that users won’t stop to think about them at all – they’ll just be left with the general impression that something positive has happened to them. Our work is ultimately invisible.

Often, the work of a content designer is actually to delete content instead of creating it. For decades, data has been king – the tech industry has been hanging on to archives, multiple versions of documents, huge repositories of help documents and FAQs. Content designers generally hold the view that if your designs are good enough, nobody will need any of that stuff: the information you need to fill in that form will all be in one place; the questions they have about that product will be answered before they even think to ask them; the button they need to click will be so obvious that they don’t realise they’ve clicked on it.

And here is where I mention accessibility. You might not have accessibility needs – perhaps, as far as you’re aware, nobody at your entire company does. But how many of your users<use href="#wpil-svg-outbound-5-icon-path"></use> struggle with their vision (77%)? How many struggle with numbers (49%)? How many have low literacy (17-27%)? Big numbers in the brackets there, right? You might not think these people work in tech, but they’re definitely using your website, software, service, mobile app. Sure, your visual/UX designer might be able to pick out a good font, look at colour contrast, but have you checked your users can understand the words you’re writing?

Another thing content designers can help you with is authority – authenticity. This is the reason why we don’t just stick to websites. When a user receives an email or letter from the government, for example, it has to be just right. Too informal, and it looks unimportant or even spammy. Too formal, and it can terrify the recipient into inaction – or again, look spammy.

We can even look at call centre scripts as part of our work: are your call centre agents au fait with your website, email comms, and chatbot? Are they giving the same message that the rest of your company is?

The latest forays content designers have made have been into audio visual content (a welcome move to me, since I spent over a decade creating exactly that at the BBC). How are your training materials coming across? Are your infographics working for people with visual impairments, dyslexia, or dyscalculia? Could you give that advice in one minute, instead of ten? Think of how much time that might cost your animator – how much time you’d save in the edit room, and you can begin to put a figure to the value of having a content designer on your team.

There are many things I adore about content design, and most of them are the moments of realisation I see. It could be a business analyst realising I really did put that 256 page document onto two sides of A4 without losing anything, or a stakeholder signing off a project on the basis of a one-pager with all the information they needed to make the right decision. It’s often a user clicking through a few pages mindlessly before realising, for example, that goodness, they really did just receive a National Insurance number in five minutes instead of 13 weeks. Right now I’m watching users type in a complicated, lengthy query and immediately receive an authoritative, carefully hand-crafted response that gives them exactly the information they need without having to sift through hundreds of pages of search results or wrestle with a chatbot.

Content design is glorious. It saves time, money and effort. Hire a content designer for your next project, and see for yourself.
