It's hard to argue with the health benefits of a diet rich in fruits and vegetables. Fruits and vegetables are a natural source of energy containing many essential vitamins and minerals that your body needs to help protect you from disease. The most common reasons that people give for not eating more fruits and vegetables are; they live a busy life, having fruits and veggies around isn’t always convenient, and they have trouble consuming that amount of produce. If only getting the daily recommended values was easier…

It can be with our new superfood energy drink! V-Force is a delicious chocolate green drink designed for kids and the kid at heart. V-Force offers smooth, clean energy combined with whole body nutritional support. In just one serving, V-Force provides the antioxidant power of 8-10 servings of fruits and vegetables. Its taste will bring back fond memories of drinking chocolate milk as a kid.

V-Force Highlights
Helps to eliminate harmful toxins – V-Force’s ingredients help support the body's natural detoxification process and fiber helps to eliminate the toxins.

Keeps your pH balanced - V-Force is a rich source of alkaline forming foods that help keep the body’s pH in check assuring essential vitamin and mineral uptake.

Promotes overall good health – Just one serving of V-Force per day can help your child's body absorb essential vitamins and minerals, maintain proper calcium levels in bone, supply antioxidants at a cellular level to help protect against disease, and assist the body’s immune system in the production of white blood cells

No artificial anything? – That’s right. V-Force is a 100% vegetarian and gluten free green drink that contains absolutely NO fillers, added sugar, yeast, corn, wheat, soy protein, dairy, egg, MSG, GMOs, preservatives, chemical sweeteners, or artificial ingredients.

Let us talk about protein and the importance of getting
enough protein in your diet. Protein is an essential building block for your
cells. Your body needs protein to rebuild itself and protein can actually boost your metabolism.

But what happens when you don’t get enough protein in your
diet? Well, there are many factors to consider and quite a range of severities
too.

For example; if we are referring to the protein intake a
child needs, especially an infant, their little bodies require massive amounts
of protein (compared to their body weight) because they are changing and
growing so quickly.

The lack of enough protein in ones diet can even negatively
affect your immune system.

Here are some other symptoms commonly associated with a lack
of protein:

• Edema

• Weight loss

• Thinning or brittle hair, hair loss

• Ridges or deep lines in finger and toe nails

• Skin becomes very light, burns easily in the sun

• Reduced pigmentation in the hair on scalp and body

• Skin rashes, dryness, flakiness

• General weakness and lethargy

• Muscle soreness and weakness, cramps

• Slowness in healing wounds, cuts, scrapes, and bruises

• Bedsores and other skin ulcers

• Difficulty sleeping

• Headaches

• Nausea and stomach pain

• Fainting

• Crankiness, moodiness

• Severe depression

• Anxiety

• Lack of energy, no desire to do things

How do you find out if you are getting enough protein in
your diet? It’s pretty simple. Go to your primary doctor and have them run a
general blood test. Make sure you tell your doctor that you are looking to
check your protein levels.

If you prefer getting protein from the vegetables instead of dairy products or meat, there is a new product called "Vtein" that you may want to check out. Vtein is a 100% vegetarian protein powered drink that comes in chocolate and vanilla flavors. more info

Plant Fiber is Smart Fiber

You are probably saying things like – who needs fiber, I’m as regular as clockwork!” But fiber does ALOT more than just keep us regular.

There actually two types of fiber: Soluble and Insoluble.

Insoluble fiber promotes the movement of materials through
your digestive system. These are foods like whole wheat flour, wheat bran, and
vegetables to name a few.

Soluble fiber is fiber that dissolves in water. You can get
soluable fiber through eating oats, peas, citrus fruits, prunes, and carrots.

Fiber, while the human digestive track is designed not to
digest fiber, plays a critical part in achieving optimal health. Here’s how:

• Supports a
healthy heart

• Supports regular
bowel movements – This may seem a bit gross but the reality of the situation is
basic and states that the waste products our bodies produce need to be
expelled. If it cannot get rid of its waste then the body begins to
deteriorate. People really don’t think
too much about regularity but THEY SHOULD. This is a good indication of how
everything is working and even give you signs that things may not be working
right.

Lesson to be learned here:

• Supports normal
blood sugar levels

• Supports slower
digestion thus supporting proper digestive hormone balance

• Supports normal
blood pressure

• Supports weight
loss

There are so many things that fiber directly contributes to
that it is quite mind boggling. Yet, people do not eat enough fiber, of either
variety! Why? Well, we have to look at the ease of getting quick, fast foods.
You think a cheeseburger and fries has a lot of beneficial fiber in it?

Let us answer that for you, NO.

We also have to look at processed foods. You know, the foods
that are primarily in the center of the grocery store, not the outside
perimeter. These foods are full of salts not fiber.

QUICK TIP: Eat about 5-6 dried prunes each night before you
go to bed. They will satisfy your sweet tooth craving and give you a whopping
fiber dose.

Cellulose: Down with OPP

You may be wondering what we mean by "down with OPP".
Well, we can say it’s not the Naughty By Nature lyrics you may be thinking of
from the 90′s. What we mean by (OPP) is "Opportunistic Plant Parts"
which is what cellulose is!

Here is a quick science lesson: Cellulose is what makes up
the walls of a plant cell. Humans cannot digest cellulose thus we consider it "dietary
fiber".

The human benefits of cellulose:

• Supports
regularity

• No caloric value

• Promotes feelings
of satiety

• Supports a
healthy colon

Hopefully our creativity with classifying cellulose as
“opportunistic plant parts” isn’t too far of a stretch of the imagination for
you. From the above potential benefits, they most certainly can provide a healthy
opportunity to better your health regiment.

By the way, MannaLife International adds cellulose to their 100% vegetarian protein meal replacement drink, Vtein. Read more

Portion Control – Dirty words or worth the effort?

What many people don’t realize it that portion control can
make a HUGE difference in weight management just like caloric restriction
(staying under a certain amount of calories a day). What most people also don’t
realize is that they are probably eating 2-3 portions per meal and it’s even
worse when you go out to eat.

You would think that treating yourself and your family to an
evening out – not having to worry about what to cook for dinner – would be
carefree. Think again. Most restaurant servings are similar to those you
automatically eat at home – 2-3 serving sizes.

QUICK TIP – EATING OUT

We know you’ve had this happen to you before. You order and
when they bring out your plate – your eyes get big and you say, ‘Wow, that’s a
big meal, I wasn’t expecting that from the picture.” BUT…you end up eating the
entire meal.

Here’s what to do: Split and entrée with a friend or family
member.

This will reduce the amount you can eat and get you closer
to having one serving.

QUICK TIPS – AT HOME

We know you’ve seen those snack bags at your local grocery
store. Those are the best invention for someone who wants to watch their
portions. They generally hold about one serving of any food. Keep in mind you
don’t want to fill the baggie to the brim!

Take the time after you do your weekly grocery shopping and
put all your snack foods into individual serving sizes. It’s time consuming –
we know – but well worth it. Pre-portion
benefits;

• Helps you only eat one serving

• Helps you pack lunches quicker for school (think about it
they are already in baggies! It’s grab and go time!)

• Gives you more time to stay away from the kitchen (when
you’re in the kitchen you want to eat!)

• Helps you become more aware of true serving sizes

• Saves you money! (You’re food supply will actually start
to last longer.)

I think you will find that forming good foundational nutritional
habits will only support you on your journey to living a more fulfilling,
healthy and happy life.

If you decide you will enjoy a tasty but maybe not a good nutritious
meal, here are a few ways how:

• Do at least a 40
minute workout at 80% of your maximum heart rate (MMR) capacity.

Here’s how to figure that out. Calculate your MMR first by
subtracting your age from 220. So 220 – (Your Age) = Your Maximum Heart Rate.
Then take 80% of that number. Example: A 34 year olds maximum heart rate is
186. 80% of 186 = 148.

• Kettlebell Swings
for 20 minutes. Yes only 20 minutes. Kettlebells target almost all of your
major muscles groups at once when done correctly. Do as many as you can, stop
and rest for 30 seconds to catch your breath, then repeat. Do this for maximum
of 20 minutes.

• Go lift some
weights at the gym for 30 minutes BEFORE you do your cardio. You’ll gain more
strength and burn more fat – a double
bonus feature!

• Eat a protein
packed breakfast and/or lunch. The protein actually helps you burn more fat.
Great time to try vegetarian protein powder – Vtein™. Easy, quick, and 20 grams
of easily digestible, lean protein per serving. more info

There is one more thing you can do. There is a product we
have to mention called Vlocity™ that is thermogenic. It is designed to help
your body boost its metabolic rate, naturally. Take 2-3 capsules right when you
wake up and take 2-3 capsules right before you start eating your food feast.
The body will love a little extra help from time to time. This will also
provide an energy boost in the process. read more

No mess. Research reveals that the flavonoids in almond skin works synergistically the vitamin E found in almonds. This synergistic combination creates more than 200% the antioxidant power of the almonds and almond skins when separated. "We have identified a unique combination of flavonoids in almonds," said Jeffrey Blumberg, Ph.D., senior scientist and director of the Antioxidants Research Laboratory at Tufts University. "Further blood tests demonstrated that eating almonds with their skins significantly increases both flavonoids and vitamin E in the body. This could have significant health implications, especially as people age."
Blumberg's team tested the effects of almond skin's flavonoids alone and then in combination with the vitamin E found in almonds. The tests were done on blood samples containing LDL cholesterol. While almond skin flavonoids alone enhanced LDL's resistance to oxidation by 18%, when the almond’s vitamin E was added, LDL's resistance to oxidation was extended by 52.5%!
"The synergy between the flavonoids and vitamin E in almonds demonstrates how the nutrients in whole foods such as almonds can impact health," says Dr. Blumberg.

Exercise Your Brain

Just as research has demonstrated how important physical exercise is to aging well, experts now say there are things we can do to reduce our risk of mental decline, or even reverse it. It's called the mental workout, and as baby boomers search for more ways to enjoy their longevity, interest in it is beginning to explode. As we age, most of us can live with a little bit of physical decline but we want to maintain our cognitive abilities. So what can we do about it?

That's a question that all of us should be asking. It's estimated that about 5.1 million Americans have Alzheimer's disease, including 4.9 million people age 65 and older. The Alzheimer's Association predicts that by 2050, the number of people age 65 and over with Alzheimer's could range from 11 million to 16 million.

Fortunately though, brain plasticity studies have shown that the brain can “rewire” itself into old age, and even add new cells in response to stimulation. Researchers say some people may have a better shot of maintaining their brain health by adopting a few preventive strategies, such as using computer programs, learning a new language, playing chess, doing crossword puzzles, playing scrabble or leaning a new skill or craft.

Learning a new musical instrument, for example, has been found to have a protective effect against cognitive decline, even in those younger than 65, according to the 2001 report "Achieving and Maintaining Cognitive Vitality With Aging," sponsored by the Institute for the Study of Aging and the International Longevity Center-USA, among others.

So get excited about exercising your brain in ways that are fun and be sure to nourish your brain by drinking plenty of water and enjoying your favorite Wholefood Farmacy foods at the same.

Omega-3 Fish Oil Benefits:

The Power of Cranberries

Imagine a little red berry that fights cancer, age-related diseases like loss of memory, heart disease, ulcers, and even cavities. Sound to good to be true? Allow us to introduce our friend, the Cranberry!

In 1996 laboratory studies conducted by University of Illinois scientists and published in Planta Medica demonstrated the potential anti-cancer properties of cranberries. More recently researchers at the University of Western Ontario demonstrated, in animal models, that human breast cancer cells showed significantly lower incidence of tumor development when the experimental group's diet was supplemented with cranberries.

USDA scientists at the Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University have been finding promising results associated with diets high in antioxidants and other phytonutrients. Preliminary studies suggest that diets containing fruits and vegetables with high ORAC values may provide protection against chronic age-related afflictions like loss of coordination and loss of memory. ORAC stands for Oxygen Radical Absorption Capacity which is a measure of the antioxidant activity for a particular food. Cranberries score very high on the ORAC scale at 1750 ORAC units per 3.5 oz. serving.

A study published in the Journal of the American Dental Association reported that a unique cranberry juice component, a high-molecular-weight nondialysable material (NDM), has the ability to reverse and inhibit the coaggregation of certain oral bacteria responsible for dental plaque and periodontal disease in vitro. Critical Reviews in Food Science and Nutrition reported on a preliminary clinical trial using a mouthwash containing cranberry NDM. Saliva samples of the experimental group showed a two order of magnitude reduction in Streptococcus Mutans compared with the placebo group. This is exciting news because a large percentage of cavities can be attributed to Streptococcus Mutans.

Flavonoids have been shown to function as potent antioxidants both in vitro and in vivo and may reduce the risk of atherosclerosis (clogged arteries). Cranberries contain significant amounts of flavonoids and polyphenolic compounds that have been demonstrated to inhibit LDL (bad cholesterol) oxidation. Ongoing research continues to suggest that cranberries may offer a natural defense against atherosclerosis.

Peptic ulcers are increasingly being attributed to infection by Helicobacter pylori bacteria, as pposed to stress and/or stomach acidity. A high-molecular-weight nondialysable constituent of cranberry juice has been shown to inhibit the adhesion of H. pylori to human gastric mucus in vitro. These preliminary results suggest that cranberry may be beneficial in the prevention of peptic ulcers through the inhibition of H. pylori adhesion to gastric mucus and stomach tissue.

You can find cranberries in your favorite Wholefood Farmacy foods such as, Craanberry Crunch, Cranberry Phi, Phi Plus, Fruitalicious, and Fruitalicious Plus. Cranberries are also an awesome addition to a smoothie made from any of our fruit based Farinas such as BeautiPhi, ClariPhi, ElectriPhi, FructiPhi & GloriPhi. Here’s an idea to try – in your blender, add 2 tbsp of your choice of Farina, a little ice water, a couple of ice cubes and a handful of cranberries. Blend on high for about 30 seconds and enjoy!

omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants and phytosterols that reduce
the risk of breast cancer, according to a study presented at the
American Association for Cancer Research 100th Annual Meeting
2009.

Elaine Hardman, Ph.D., associate professor of medicine at
Marshall University School of Medicine, said that while her
study was done with laboratory animals rather than humans,
people should heed the recommendation to eat more walnuts.

"Walnuts are better than cookies, french fries or potato chips
when you need a snack," said Hardman. "We know that a healthy
diet overall prevents all manner of chronic diseases."

Hardman and colleagues studied mice that were fed a diet that
they estimated was the human equivalent of two ounces of walnuts
per day. A separate group of mice were fed a control diet.

Standard testing showed that walnut consumption significantly
decreased breast tumor incidence, the number of glands with a
tumor and tumor size.

"These laboratory mice typically have 100 percent tumor
incidence at five months; walnut consumption delayed those
tumors by at least three weeks," said Hardman.

Molecular analysis showed that increased consumption of omega-3
fatty acids contributed to the decline in tumor incidence, but
other parts of the walnut contributed as well.

"With dietary interventions you see multiple mechanisms when
working with the whole food," said Hardman. "It is clear that
walnuts contribute to a healthy diet that can reduce breast
cancer."
The study - Where’s the Fruit? reveals that 51 percent of these products do not contain fruit, and another 16 percent contain only minimal amounts of fruit despite prominent fruit promotions on the packaging.

"Parents drawn to products that seem healthier for their children based on references to fruit on the packaging are being deceived," explains Leslie Mikkelsen, a registered dietician with the Strategic Alliance and lead author of the study. "Food and beverage companies are some of the most sophisticated communicators in the world and are clearly capable of accurately reflecting what is in their products if they wanted to."

The Where’s the Fruit? study identifies the most heavily advertised children food products that include words and images of fruit and/or fruit ingredients on the packaging. A total of 37 products were included in the final study, and their ingredient lists were analyzed to determine the presence of fruit ingredients. A full 51% of the products contained no fruit ingredients at all despite the images of fruits and use of words such as “fruity,” “fruit flavors” and “berry” on the packaging.

"The nation is facing a staggering epidemic of chronic diseases that result from poor eating and physical inactivity," cautions Dr. Andria Ruth, a pediatrician for the Diabetes Resource Center of Santa Barbara. "Children are particularly affected and these food companies are making parents’ jobs even harder by using misleading packaging to lead them to think that they are making a healthy choice when they are not."

If you’re tired of being misled when it comes to the food that your children eat, then let the Wholefood Farmacy be your oasis of truth amidst this desert of deception. At The Wholefood Farmacy we believe in truthfully describing our products and we don’t rely on fancy artwork or neon colored pictures to get the job done. All of our full sized food packages feature a clear see-though front panel so that you can actually see what’s inside. Fruitalicious is 100% Fruit - and we’re proud to show you what’s inside.

Fruitalicious

Fruitalicious is a sweet, fruity alternative to traditional snack foods. It is a combination of low-pressure and sun-dried ingredients: Apples, Raisins, Banana, Strawberry, Mango, Raspberry, Dates, Coconut, Currants, Figs, Cranberry, & Red Flame Raisins. This raw fruit snack packs a powerful fruity punch. Fruitalicious is a tasty immune boosting treat that is also a great source of dietary fiber & slow sugars.

We can build a computer that previously only humans could do. But the technology we're using on our food could be harming people on a daily base. The problem seems to be humans are not machines. The human body is a complex organism that takes in food, sun, air and water. It absorbs what it eats and mostly discards the rest. Everything consumed becomes a complex interaction.

It all starts with some basic vitamins and minerals. The body is comprised of approximately four to six percent minerals. What the proper minerals, vitamins cannot function in the body. Vitamins are organic micronutrients essential to normal human metabolism. Each one performs an important function in the body and is necessary to maintain a proper balance. Most are not manufactured by the body and need to be

Hydrophilic minerals are the minerals used by our body. These are plant derived minerals which means they enter the plant through its root system. They are 200 to 2000 times smaller than metallic minerals. They are water soluble and easy to dissolve without digestion. The absorbs almost 100% of Hydrophilic minerals.

There are two different classifications of vitamins which are Fat Soluble and Water Soluble. The Fat Soluble vitamins are vitamin A, D, E and K. Fat soluble vitamins can be stored in the body. There are nine types of Water Soluble vitamins E. There are eight EC just the vitamin is in has identified B vitamins and vitamin C. Water Soluble vitamins cannot be stored by the body and must be replaced. These are just the vitamins that man has identified to date and there is no telling how many remain to be discovered.
Antioxidants are the nutrients that help protect the cells within the body from being damaged by free radicals in our system. Unfortunately free radicals come in part as we continue to consume processed nutrient depleted, chemically laden food. These junk foods and chemicals are what contributes to the level of free radicals in our body.

A good way to know the value of the antioxidants protection you get in a product is a test called ORAC value. It is an indicator for that product to provide antioxidant protection against free radical damage. ORAC stands for Oxygen Radical Absorption Capacity. When you understand the ORAC value of the MannaFeast, it is naturally occurring so it is more effective and the level of ORAC is literally off the chart.

But the benefits were actually tiny -- about 0.72 percent of the statin takers in the trial had a heart attack or stroke, compared with 1.5 percent of those taking placebos.

As an alternative to going on a statin drug that comes with dangerous side effects, you may want to try these five measures first:

1. Stop smoking. Smoking hardens the arteries and increases inflammation. But research shows you can reverse all the damaging effects to your arteries within 10 years of quitting.

2. Think olive oil, fish, and nuts. People who stick with a Mediterranean-style diet based on fruits, vegetables, nuts, and olive oil can lower their levels of inflammation. It works by increasing the amount of foods you eat that are rich in omega-3 fats, which fight inflammation.

3. Get active. Exercise is a great way to lower inflammation without any of the side effects associated with medications.

Shrink your waist size. If you're a woman with a waist measurement of over 35 inches or a man with a waist of over 40 inches, you probably have high inflammation. Whittling a few inches off the waist by reducing your portions and increasing activity can go a long way toward solving that problem.

4. Get enough sleep. A new study shows that elderly people with high blood pressure who sleep less than 7.5 hours a night have dramatically elevated chances of having a stroke or heart attack. Other research has shown that both too little and too much sleep increases inflammation. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine says most adults need between seven and eight hours of sleep each night.

5. Reduce stress. High levels of stress hormones can lead to the release of excess inflammatory chemicals.

Source: U.S. News & World Report November 11, 2008

Do You Need a Nutritional Supplement

There are nutritionists that claim vitamins and supplements do less than promised and that we should simply eat healthier whole foods to provide for our dietary needs. These claims are not without merit. Many of the supplements on the market today do not deliver the nutrition that they claim because they are not bioavailable.

Ideally, all of us would derive our complete nutrition from a balanced and wholesome diet. But the reality is that our modern lifestyles make it hard or impossible to find time to prepare the foods that our bodies truly need. It is also inconvenient and very expensive to do. Here are some things to tell you whether you need additional supplementation or more real live whole food nutrition in your diet.

• If you’re not getting multiple servings of a variety of vegetables and fruits every day, it’s unlikely that you’ll be taking in the necessary amounts of minerals and vitamins that you body needs for optimal health.

• If you’re on a restricted-calorie diet, you may not be fulfilling your daily requirements. This is primarily due to not eating a wide variety of foods, which makes it very difficult to get all of the essential nutrition your body needs.

• If you are considering becoming pregnant, or are already pregnant, your body’s needs are different. You’ll need more calcium, iron and folate. The extra iron is needed for red blood cell health, in order to stave off fatigue. Folate is generally recommended to protect against fetal spinal defects, like spina bifida.

• If you are postmenopausal, you need additional nutritional support. This period of life is marked by drops in estrogen production which can lead to bone loss. It’s imperative that you receive additional calcium and vitamin D, which is necessary for your body to process calcium to strengthen bones.

• If you drink alcohol heavily or smoke tobacco, your body’s ability to absorb nutrients can be impaired. Taking supplements won’t reverse the effects of these unhealthy habits, but they may help to offset some of the damage done to your body.

It certainly seems that the majority of us could use additional whole nutrition provided by fruits and vegetables that are recognized by the body instead of synthetic pills that your body has a hard time recognizing because they are manufactured nutrients.

Blueberries - This Months SuperFood

We sing the blues but shouldn't we eat the blues, too? Most of us encounter blueberries very minimally: folded into muffins or sprinkled into fruit salads. However, science has been extremely invested in this pebble-sized super food as of late, conducting countless studies on this small wonder. Let's put it this way: if the blueberry were a Broadway play, a star-studded lineup of nutrients would be on the Playbill.

Little Friends with Big Benefits

Blueberries have a low glycemic index. A ½ cup serving of blueberries is just 40 calories, containing nutrients like potassium and iron as well and vitamin C. Blueberries also provide dietary fiber, in fact, two grams in ½ cup serving. This equals the amount of fiber in a slice of whole wheat bread.

They may be small but they pack a powerful punch. Health Magazine listed blueberries as the top source of antioxidant activity in their Guide to 50 Super Foods a while ago.

According to the American Institute for Cancer Research, their high level of antioxidants helps the body to slow the process of aging and protect cells against damage.

Blueberries are particularly rich in the antioxidants known as anthocyannins, which are also present in blackberries, radishes, red cabbage, grapes and apples. Blueberries are lovers of the brain. In fact, some neuroscientists call it the brain berry.

The Bluer the Berry

Foods that are blue or purple in hue are often overlooked in our diets. These colors deeply promote urinary tract health, memory function and encourage healthy aging with their vast array of phytochemicals such as phenolics and the aforementioned anthocyannins.

Next time you pass by them in the supermarket, you should swipe a carton or two. Give your body a chance to sing the blues.

Whole Foods Provide Nutritional Balance

Every day thousands of individuals walk the vitamin aisles of health food stores baffled by the hundreds of choices of bottles of pills and tablets on the shelves. Many people are opting for lower-priced processed food products, replacing meat with more carbohydrate-based meals and waiting for specials before buying. More and more unhealthy processed foods are being purchased and consumed. What affect does this have on your body?

Be careful because over time, the experts warn, proper nutrition is crucial to long term health. This could lead to a higher incidence of obesity-related diseases such as diabetes already being reported.

With food prices going up between 10 and 20 per cent, consumers are finding it more difficult to buy nutritious organic live whole foods. This causes the consumers to control their spending habits that can result in purchasing less nutritious food. As a result, shoppers, particularly those with lower incomes, are choosing less expensive food items that lack adequate nutrition that they would normally get from whole foods and whole food supplements.

I choose to eat whole foods containing the proper nutrition to stay healthy and cut expenses in other areas. Your body is not like a car. You cannot buy a new one, so keep what you have healthy for life. Fuel your body with the proper nutrition all of the time because your health is priceless.

Can The Sodas

Gary Foster, director of the Center for Obesity Research and Education at Temple University and colleagues have just completed a two year study. Five Philadelphia elementary schools replaced sodas with fruit juice. They scaled back snacks and banished candy. They handed out raffle tickets for wise food choices. They spent hours teaching kids, their parents and teachers about good nutrition.

The results were phenomenal. The number of students who became overweight during the two-year experiment was a full 50% less than the number of kids who became overweight in schools that didn’t make these changes. The findings are published in the April, 2008, issue of the journal Pediatrics.

In the five test schools, juice, water and low-fat milk replaced sodas. Snacks had to meet limits for fat, salt and sugar. Students who ate healthy snacks got raffle tickets to win prizes such as bikes and jump ropes.

But the schools can’t do it all on their own – the biggest challenge to schools is that kids drink sodas and eat junk food at home – so they come to school expecting to do the same. As parents, imagine the difference we could make if all of us made these same simple changes in our homes.

Wholefood Farmacy foods taste great, they’re convenient, kids love them and can help you to take that first step in the right direction.

Dangerous Ingredients Lurking in our Food Supply

Here are examples of what is in many of our foods today unknown and unseen by the general public.

• Hormones, steroids, antibiotics found in animal products
Research shows these compounds can be absorbed by fruits and vegetables grown in soil treated with manure from animals fed antibiotics.

• Toxins and pollutants from contaminated soil and water
These can stay in our environment years after they've been banned, such as DDT.

• Pesticides, fertilizers and fumigants
These are unnatural compounds.

• MSG (Monosodium Glutamate}
MSG is a neurotoxic flavor enhancer that's hidden in many foods.

• Partially hydrogenated oil
Gives baked goods and snacks longer shelf life but contains high levels of trans fat.

• High fructose corn syrup-With a high glycemic index, it converts to fat more than any other sugar. Usually made with genetically modified corn and genetically modified
enzymes.

• Genes from bacteria, viruses, plants, animals and even humans inserted into plants like soybeans, corn, canola and cotton
Unlike traditional breeding, genetic engineering can create life forms that would normally never exist in nature.

•Artificial colors and flavorings
Artificial colors are chemical compounds made mainly from coal-tar; artificial flavors are cheaply produced chemical mixtures that mimic natural flavors.

• Artificial sweeteners
Despite claims that these are "safe" food additives, remember they are not natural. For example, aspartame is made up of three chemicals.

• Benzoate preservatives-These are phenolic compounds often added to food to preserve fats and prevent fats from becoming rancid; these preservatives produce low levels of hormones.
The result? Food that has been denatured - stripped of much of its nutritional value and integrity. Pasteurization uses high heat to kill bacteria and harmful microorganisms but at the same time substantially alters or deactivates the majority of good, naturally occurring "live" nutrients and enzymes!

Some manufacturers go as far as to say their product is not pasteurized although prior to combining the products individual juice ingredients each ingredient is pasteurized prior to being made into a juice or supplement.

Many of these so-called "natural" juices contain ingredients from "juice concentrates" or "puree concentrates" using heat or a vacuum, which also denatures the nutritional integrity of a fruit or berry. These types of minerals are not water soluble and are difficult for your body to absorb. According to experts, your body can assimilate no more than eight percent of inorganic minerals you consume from these supplements. Just eight percent! (1)

The best way to get the minerals you need each day is from plant-derived hydrophilic minerals. These minerals are 200 to 2,000 times smaller than inorganic minerals, plus they're water soluble and more easily digested by your body. In fact, almost 100 percent of a hydrophilic mineral can be absorbed by your body and made available for use.

The key phrase is "plant derived" or "plant based". Yes, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants with the thousands of naturally occurring nutrients found in plants, fruits and vegetables give you better nutrition than isolated synthetic vitamins-almost 100 percent.

(1) TRC Nutritional Laboratories, www.trccorp.com

The Synthetic Vitamin Deception

Because it's hard to eat 5-9 fruits and vegetables every day, many Americans think they can get the vitamins, minerals and antioxidants they need from isolated synthetic supplements.

Americans are buying synthetic supplements in droves to the tune of $20 billion a year.
