Iowa lottery says there are 77,640 winning tickets that were sold in Iowa in Saturday’s draw ranging from $4 up to $40,000.

Two Iowans had tickets that matched four of the first five numbers and the Powerball to win prizes of $10,000 each. Another lucky player had the Power Play option added to it, so that ticket won a prize of $40,000.

There was about a 1 in 175.2 million but that didn’t stop Iowans buying more than $5.1 million in Powerball tickets.

“We know a lot of people are excited about buying. We know a lot of people are excited about dreaming,” said Terry Rich, CEO of the Iowa Lottery.

In the past year, two jackpots have been seen in the state. The “Shipping 20″ in Cedar Rapids took home $241 million in June 2012 and Mary and Brian Lohse  won $202 million last October.

Just in case you missed it, the numbers for Saturday’s draw are 10, 13, 14, 22, 52 and Powerball number is 11.

There was a possibility that the jackpot would grow to over $1-billion for Wednesday’s draw if no one had the winning combination but that won’t happen now. Lottery officials confirmed that the $600 million ticket was sold at a supermarket in Zephyrhills, FL.

Kirsten Anderson, former communications director for the Iowa Senate Republicans, said she got fired Friday.

Anderson said during her time in the office, male staffers used inappropriate and sexist language around her. She said senators also acted inappropriately. Anderson called the office where she worked the past five years “toxic.”

Anderson will discuss her allegations for the first time publicly Sunday morning on Today in Iowa Sunday, with additional coverage on Channel 13’s “The Insiders” from 8 a.m.

Saturday night, Ed Failor, an assistant to Senate Minority Leader Bill Dix, said, “There will be no comments on personnel matters by anyone on our staff.”

Ransom Cummings was swimming with his mom and two siblings at Spring Lake Park on Tuesday when he wandered away.

Rescue crews were called in to search for the toddler. After half an hour, they found him in five feet of water just off the dock.

Funeral services for Ransom will be at 5 in the evening at the Dwelling Place in Jefferson.

Visitation will follow the service. The family will hold a private burial.

Representative Bruce Braley gave the medals to Dean at a Waterloo nursing home Saturday afternoon.

“It’s an honor to present James with the medals he earned so long ago for his service in the Army, and I’m proud that we can finally honor him properly,” Braley said.  “James served our country with valor, and it’s my privilege to award these medals on behalf of a grateful nation.”

Dean enlisted in the army in 1942 but never received the decorations he earned from his years of service.

He says it’s an honor to finally have them, “Well I feel honored that I served in the service and I put my time in there for my country and I feel that I did a great deal,” said Dean.

The 89 year old was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, the American Campaign Medal and the World War Two Victory Medal.

Dean says he’ll display them proudly on his wall at the nursing home.

The circuit was turned in to a training ground for younger drivers as officials spread soapy water on the track to help them learn how to handle slick driving conditions.

It’s a program called Street Survival. It teaches new drivers to handle challenging driving scenarios they won’t find in drivers ed.

The program is not required by state law but instructors say this type of additional exposure is an advantage.

“We’re giving them the chance to be safer drivers and if we can save the life of one person by learning to avoid an accident this makes all of this effort worthwhile,” said chief instructor, Jeff Daly.

The class is offered in the summer and fall for people ages 16 to 25.

“Now I’m more experienced and I know what to do and I’ll be a better driver,” said participant Leah Kunkel.

Iowa artist John Brommel created the 11-foot tall version of the Easter Island head known as Moai. He made it out of rusted steel.

Brommel’s interpretation adds a bit of character to the giant face, with a smirk.

He calls his creation Moai Dude.

The 1800-pound sculpture is the first in Altoona’s new pirate adventure family park to be coined Pirate’s Cove.

At Bass Pro shops Saturday, members from the Army Corps of Engineers met with families to tell them how to stay safe out on the water.

Iowa law states children 13 and under must wear a life-jacket on a boat, and those 13 and older have to have one close by.

Organizers say on top of boating, there is also a growing number of kayakers and canoers in the state. They want to make sure whatever water sport you choose, you take the time to be safe.

“Some of the things we want them to do is make sure they check their safety equipment before they head out on the water, going to want to check the life-jackets make sure they’re in good shape, and everybody on board has one the fits them properly, and it’s for the use that it’s intended,” said Tracy Spry.

The Army Corps of Engineers is hosting similar events across the country this week as part of National Boating Safety Week.

Police say at 9 p.m. Friday night, a maintenance man with Westpointe Apartments was walking through the pool area at 2510 Canterbury Road.

That’s when he saw a young girl at the bottom of the shallow end of the pool.

Police say he immediately jumped into the pool and pulled the girl to safety.

When paramedics got there, they were able to help the girl breath. They then took her to the hospital for evaluation.

The pool does not have a life guard on duty and it’s not known why the girl was alone.

The Linn County sheriff’s department says the crash happened just north of Central City around 1 a.m.

Troopers say a van and a pickup collided on state Highway 13.

Investigators say the driver of the van was pronounced dead at the scene, and a young child in the van was flown to a Cedar Rapids hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Paramedics also took the driver of the truck to the hospital.

Officials haven’t released the names of those involved yet.

In the past year, Terry Rich and the Iowa Lottery have given out a lot of money.

The $241 million dollars won by the “Shipping 20″ in Cedar Rapids in June of 2012 and the $202 million dollars claimed by Mary and Brian Lohse are just a fraction of the $600 million dollars up for grabs Saturday night.

“We know a lot of people are excited about buying. We know a lot of people are excited about dreaming,” said Terry Rich, CEO of the Iowa Lottery.

At Dahl’s on Ingersoll Avenue, lines of dreamers gathered at the courtesy counter all afternoon long.

Carroll Hamill bought three tickets.

After helping out friends and family and paying off some debt, she has just one goal if she’s the big winner.

“I would fix up my existing house. That would basically be it,” said Hamill.

Denny McCauley says he’s never matched more than two numbers, but he’s not alone.

The chances of winning the jackpot are 1 in 175.2 million.

This time he has a strategy he thinks may improve his odds.

“I’ve been in four different states and bought tickets in four different states,” McCauley told Channel 13 News.

The Powerball excitement wasn’t only at the ticket counters.

At the Downtown Farmers Market, people were more than happy to share their plans.

“I would start a college education fund for my grandchildren. I have three of them,” said Steven Brincks.

“We’d pay off some debt and get some new equipment for our softball team. We need new uniforms,” said Ryan and Rachael Harms.

Lottery officials say more than 80% of Powerball combinations have been purchased.

It’s likely someone will win tonight. It might as well be an Iowan.

“Iowans do win. We’re really excited about that,” said Rich.

If no one wins tonight Powerball jackpot, Iowa Lottery CEO Terry Rich estimates Wednesday’s jackpot will approach a record $1 billion dollars.

Sunday afternoon and evening will bring the first real shot at some severe weather this year to Iowa.  After morning thunderstorms clear out, temperatures will jump back up into the mid 80′s.  As we head into the late afternoon/evening, thunderstorms will develop off to the west, slowly making their way toward the central portions of the state.  Some of these storms could be severe, with large hail, damaging winds, and even a few isolated tornadoes possible.  Be sure to keep an eye to the skies throughout the day tomorrow, and we will be sure to bring you any updates should severe weather develop.

Storms will likely start around 3pm and push toward Central Iowa around 6pm.

Looking ahead to next week, we will still see some showers and thunderstorms, however we won’t be nearly as active as this weekend.  Temperatures will be cooler, with highs only reaching the low 70′s by the middle of the week.

Officer Thomas Frein shot 39-year-old Richard Anderson of Cedar Falls around 1 a.m. Thursday morning. Police say he was shot because he threatened them with a knife.

Paramedics took Anderson to the hospital and he is expected to survive.

Frein is on paid leave until an investigation is complete, which is standard policy.

DCI says a decision about criminal charges against Anderson will be made once the investigation is complete.

How about this weather for the state track meet?  AWESOME.  70′s, 80′s, sunny, little breeze, not sure mother nature could do much better.  Wasn’t it snowing like 2 weeks ago?  Hope it stays like this.

I’ve already got my SPF 50 out.  If I don’t wear sunscreen in the summer I turn in to a beet.  In the winter my skin resembles the actor from the movie ‘Powder.’

In his new book, Phil Jackson says Michael Jordan is/was a better basketball player than Kobe Bryant.  Is this surprising to anyone? Is there a person living who thinks Kobe is better than Jordan?  Seriously?  Kobe is a great player, top 10 all-time, but he’s not Jordan, and never will be.

Kentucky’s Nerlens Noel is projected to be the Top pick in the upcoming NBA Draft.  Noel is 6’10″ 206 pounds.  Yes, you read that correctly, 206 pounds.  I’m 6’3″ 195, Noel is just 10 pounds heavier than me.  I have serious doubts about this guy.  Not only is he ‘twig-like’ but he’s coming off a torn ACL.  If I have the #1 pick I look elsewhere.  11 points, 10 rebs, 4 blocks a game for Noel, I’m not sold.

There’s only 9 horses running in Saturday’s Preakness.  Is that a low number?  I’m not a horse racing guy, but only 9 horses seems really low.  Orb is the heavy favorite.  Watch out for ‘Governor Charlie, 12/1, he will be in it till the end.

The I-Cubs and Padres (Tucson) combined for 35 hits Friday night.  Tucson holds on 9-8.  What a great night for baseball, except for the fact the I-Cubs lost.

The Powerball is $600 million.  If you win and take the cash option, that’s a cool $376 million.  Straight cash homie.  $600 million.  Man, that’s just nuts.

Crews responded to the apartment building on 9^th Street just after 7:30 p.m.

Authorities say a firefighter fell through a hole in the floor and suffered a back injury. Investigators aren’t releasing the firefighter’s name, but say he was released from the hospital Friday.

A tenant was also treated for smoke inhalation.

The fire caused about $60,000 in damage and the residents had to be relocated.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Earlier this week the IRS Commissioner Steven Miller resigned amid a rising scandal over improper targeting of conservative groups.

The pro-life organization Coalition for Life filed for tax-exempt status in 2009. According to organization President Susan Martinek the IRS responded with questions about protests at Planned Parenthood clinics and said they would approve their status when all board members had signed a statement saying they would no longer protest outside of clinics.

The coalition hired a lawyer to respond to questions from the IRS and the tax-exempt application was eventually granted.

As many as 500 similar groups nationwide say they faced the same scrutiny. The former head of the agency was grilled by lawmakers on Friday, but denied doing anything wrong.

Miller says the targeting of conservative groups wasn’t deliberate.   The problem stemmed from a huge increase in workload at the IRS.

“You know, I’m never going to get to see my daughter go to prom.  I’m never going to throw her that graduation party that I was so looking forward to.” Katerra’s mother, Laura Dillinger said fighting back tears,  “We were just talking about class rings and senior pictures and and all this stuff I’m gonna miss. Grand baby’s, you know?”

As a rule, we don’t report on suicides, especially when kids commit suicide.  There’s too much of a chance it will somehow glamorize the death and may lead others to consider suicide.

But that’s why we decided to do this story.  Because Katerra’s parents are afraid others are already glamorizing her suicide.  And they say they don’t want anyone else to go through what they went through.

A few years ago, Katerra’s sister committed suicide. And Katerra just couldn’t cope with the loss.  “She started cutting,” her mother says,  “She developed an eating disorder.  The eating disorder caused her to cut more.  She just..she didn’t know how to heal.  She couldn’t heal her pain.”

Then, one day, Katerra decided to channel her pain into helping others.  She developed a Facebook page to help other teens cope with what she was gone through.  She seemed to know just what to say.

“At first when I looked at the page I think there was 38 ‘likes’ and she’s like ‘oh, look at my page. look at what I did’.  I thought that’s cool.  And then a couple of months later I looked and there’s like 13,000 people.” her mother says.

“Just astonishing.” Katerra’s stepfather, Steve Dillinger said, “I didn’t realize that my little girl..I understand she was my world. I didn’t understand that she was lots of peoples world.”

Psychologists tell us there are warning signs that parents can look for.  Katerra’s parents knew the warning signs.  They say in this case there really weren’t any.

“No more than any regular teenager I don’t think. Anymore than a regular teenager, you know?” Steve Dillinger says, “Wasn’t prepared for this.”

Katerra killed herself last week.

Now Katerra’s parents are scared.  They’re seeing posts on their daughter’s site from friends who seem to be considering suicide.  That Katerra’s suicide is somehow something to be honored.  “There was nothing glamorous about it.” Steve says,  “It’s the worst thing a father would ever have to do.  Worst thing everybody should have to do is to see what I saw.  It was not glamorous.  It was not pretty.”

The true tragedy of this story is what could have been.  Katerra wanted to be a therapist.  She could have helped thousands of people.  Instead…all she has left behind is pain.

“It’s very selfish.” Steve says,  “She took all her pain away, but all she did was give it to everybody that loved her.”

Katerra’s parents know, in time, her friends will forget her.  All the great things she did will be forgotten.  They want Katerra’s friends to know,  in the end Katerra won’t be anything great.  She won’t have a legacy.  In the end she’ll just be another suicide.  “She’s a victim.” her mother says, “A suicide victim.  She’s a quitter.”

A gallon of regular unleaded was selling for $4.04 there, while here in the metro prices stayed just under at $3.89.

AAA says the shut-down of two refineries are to blame for the climbing prices.

A Des Moines man says he doesn’t care why prices are rising; he just wants it to stop, so he shared his frustration with a one man protest at the intersection of East 14^th and Maury.

Gas stations on both corners were selling gas for the same price, Michael Banks says that is part of the problem, “You go one place and you see the price has been raised 10-12 cents, and the next thing you know, they are all that way. Every single gas station, that’s price fixing in my book, I don’t know what everyone else calls it, but it sure isn’t fair to you or I who have to fill up our cars.”

Banks hopes to see more gas station protests as prices continue to rise. He is asking people to join him by visiting his facebook page down by pennies, up by dimes.

The Guard is donating eight humvees to the Department of Public Safety through a special program, which allows the military to transfer equipment to law enforcement agencies at no cost.

The Guard is helping to fix-up and paint the vehicles.

Once they are ready, they will be stationed at state patrol headquarters across the state.

The Patrol says the humvees will be a big asset this winter when snow and ice make travel more difficult.

KIOA Radio held its third annual Salute to Military Moms downtown. The women were saluted for their courage both in battle and on the home front.

Organizers say it gives the women the chance to connect with one another. “A lot of moms, they connect with other people they didn’t know going through the same thing. It’s surprising how many moms are alone in this, so it gives them a chance to get together and share stories.”

About 100 women attended the event.

Elmo and Cookie Monster both ventured away from Sesame Street to dance and play with patients. A big furry hug went a long way to brighten these kids day at the hospital.

The characters are in town for a show at Wells Fargo Arena.
