Dr. Stephen Morse is the professor of epidemiology at the Mailman School of Public Health. His research focuses on risk assessment of infectious diseases and methods of improving early disease warning systems. He coined the term “emergent viruses” in his book “Emerging Viruses” which was selected by American Scientist for its list of “100 top science books of the 20th century”. Dr. Morse held faculty and leadership positions at Rockefeller University, the (NIH) National Institutes of Health, and national biosecurity and biomedical policy committees. Today’s talk will focus on how viral infections originate and spread, preventative policies to control epidemics, vaccines, and the 2019 novel coronavirus epidemic.

In this podcast, Dr. Deliang Tang, professor of Environmental Health Sciences at the Columbia University Medical Centre, speaks about his projects on the adverse effects of air pollution from coal and fossil fuel consumption on birth outcomes. His investigations can influence policy-makers to eliminate fossil fuel emissions by improving energy conversion and closing coal factories, such as in China. Dr. Tang also discusses his research on using biomarker analysis and predictive risk modeling to explore the relationship between genotypes and environmental exposures, which can improve early cancer detection.
