In 2007, I launched the WiHood USB PC bracelet which was the world's first virtual PC on a USB. Today, the last WiHood bracelet was sold. I will not produce any more or continue to run the cloud computing service because cloud-computing after 5 years is finally just another integrated service that operates invisibly in the back-end of many online services.

My social entrepreneur accomplishments have accumulated since 2007. In 2010, I won "Viewer's Choice Award" in Barcelona, Spain. In 2011, I took my first group of Norwegian students to NYC to experience the dark-side of NYC. The emotional experience was intense for all of us. 6 months later from the ceremonial podium in Gothenberg, Sweden they called me as they were awarded the Nobel Prize for Youth. Wow!

Thank you Bror Roger Mathisen (Bjørnholt Skole) and Crown Prince Haakon in believing in me and my vision. I passionately look forward to my new ideas and new projects with more schools and families in Norway and around the world.

Advancing Norway during the global crisis of 2012 (Education)

As the world enters a period of financial disaster and worst, the backbone of the many cultures become bent and in places partially broken, Norway should have a pro-active plan for the people of the world who can contribute to the advancement of Norway.

To only think that the global disaster is solely a financial disaster is to admit that you do not know what it is to go hungry or to be so destitute that taking ones life becomes an option. This will soon be the reality for many people, if it is not already.

This is the first in a series of blog post on creating opportunity from despair for Norwegian companies, people, and government to help people globally and simultaneously, help Norway. I will begin with the United States.

The United States of America
There are several private and public sectors that can immediately benefit from the resources, knowledge, availability and energy of Americans. The goal is to strategically identify and place the best people into positions in Norway that can produce a short and long-term gain. This new and deeper knowledge is desperately needed in Norway. Many Norwegian institutions are based on old thoughts, practices and antiquated beliefs. The average age of management throughout the Norwegian public sector is above 50+ years old. What chance do new ideas and the youth of tomorrow have in Norway today?

Norway's financial success has had a negative effect upon the people of Norway. In the 15 years I have been here, the core values of the Norwegian people living in Oslo have changed from family oriented to self oriented. The work ethic has changed from being proud of one's job to having a job that others look up to. The heart and soul of what made this nation so unique has been tainted but not tarnished. It can be turned around but with help from those who have gone down the same path and are now living in the cultural filth that such a mentality solely produces.

The public educational system is not the most critical. With WiHood, my 5 year old social entrepreneur company, I have spent countless hours listening to hundreds of stories from students about how teachers are not providing the education that they are required to provide.

Norway must recruit specific American teachers into Norway based on the profile and historic need of the Norwegian kommune. Each Kommune in Norway represents a special and important history for that region of Norway. This unique cultural history must be kept, at all costs. It provides a uniqueness to the people and binds them to the towns and villages that they were brought up in. It propagates old word-values that are no longer taught but in older towns are practiced without being spoken. The unique profile of each Kommune must be upheld and most of all, respected.

There are 430 Kommunes in Norway that are found in the 19 Flyke that make up all of Norway. It is critical to have all 430 Kommunes think at a micro and local level. They must take accountability in the creation of the education of "their" children. The cultural norms and acceptable behaviour from komuune-to-kommune makes Norway, Norway.

The local uniqueness of Norway makes it special when a boy from one Kommune meets a girl from the neighboring Kommune. They have different things to share, talk about, experience, grow and learn. The re-educating of the Norwegian school system is not just about the students, its about re-educating the people of Norway as well. Reminding them of the days before TV and Internet, when life was about your friends and neighbors.

Opportunity
Today, there are thousands of US graduates with advanced degrees who would be willing to come to Norway to teach. These young and hungry minds would quickly learn the Norwegian language while sharing locally new cultural values and lessons that should enrich the local community.

There are also thousands of older Americans who too have advanced degrees that would qualify for to teach in Norway. These Americans most likely come with family and other normal life accumulations one obtains as they grew older and wiser. This pool of candidates is excellent but different then the younger candidates. Each group fulfills a unique profile and need in Norway.

The timing for this program should begin in the Fall of 2012 or soon after. Other countries who too are doing well, will duplicate Norway's educational program. Even countries that are suffering will see the benefit of incorporating great minds and thinkers into their culture. Because when their crisis is over, their country will be well positioned to grow and the people will prosper.

This is a simple idea but the results will be dramatic for Norway and for the Americans that are incorporated into Norwegian society. This idea is applicable for any citizens in any country, not just Americans. The opportunity to think different is now. New innovative projects will be welcomed by everyone in both continents.

Entrepreneurs are driven by passion, not pride

A few weeks ago, I was interviewed by two female students (Kristine and Iselin) from BI (Oslo, Norway) for information on their Master's thesis on "The Role of Jontaloven in Entrepreneurship". Does it help or hinder a entrepreneur in Norway. What a great question!

I have realized over the past two years, that their are many people who are not driven by passion. This has come as a embarrassing surprise to me because my passion has been so strong throughout my life that it has blinded me to the obvious. That people feel it is equally as important to take pride in their work even though they have no passion for their work.

This was hard to understand. To be pride driven, you must accept many things that a passion driven person would never accept. You must not be judgmental about what your doing, who you're doing it for, why your doing it, and what greater purpose does the action that I am doing serve.

A person driven by passion would not accept the latter because the answers to each of these questions must feed that person's passion, no exceptions. This does not imply that passion is better then pride.

Pride is priceless. A person driven by pride is a different because they are driven by wanting "themselves" to be respected by others. The person driven by passion wants their "outcome" to be respected by others. Both are self motivated with a different purpose.

The title entrepreneur is something that many people call themselves but are not able to earn because they are risk adverse. If you don't believe in yourself or your thoughts to the point that you would commit personal property, self-esteem and sanity, then you are and shall never be an entrepreneur.

These things that most people value so important are not seen as things to lose, but the foundation blocks of your idea. How else is someone going to believe you or listen to you? Of course, you must risk whatever you have at that moment to to be heard, understood and supported. It is not about what you have to protect, it is about what you have to give just to have a chance, for a moment, that may bring you to the next plateau of success.

An entrepreneur also understand that success comes in layers and each layer is made of many simultaneous activities that can potentially be successful, until the next layer. This is the painful reality of the "layers of success". You publicly tell everyone that you are so happy to have reached your latest success but you know that it is only an introduction to the next layer.

Yes, the picture I paint is that of someone who is driven and driven and driven. That is an entrepreneur but entrepreneurs too come in layers. The top layer, the ultimate entrepreneur, does not mean the person who is financially the richest but the wisest.

Wisdom is eternal. It has taken me my entire life with mistake after mistake after mistake to learn that it is not my actions or lack of actions that define my future, it is thoughts that come from my inner self that define who I am and who I shall be.

Living in the moment, taking knowledge that I am flawed and can be better, brings me wisdom...Listening without judgement and hearing the words that are not being spoken yet are being yelled at me, that brings me wisdom...Reflecting on the eyes of the person speaking to me, seeing the wrinkles in their skin as they say certain words, that brings me wisdom...Understanding that every thing that happens in my life happens for a reason that can eventually benefit me, that brings me wisdom.

This level of wisdom for an entrepreneur is not the highest level but it is the level that I struggle to exist at. I do not I have a choice in why I do these things, there are easier ways of approaching life but by having chosen this path, I have decided to be driven by passion, not pride. I have decided to risk everything and nothing to achieve something that has no value to many, but is priceless to me.

There is no room for janteloven in an entrepreneur. If you choose to let others make decisions on your life then jontaloven is important but if "you" choose to live "your" life, then people who practice jantloven will serve as a reminder of what life is for you and what life could have been for them.

1. Morning Reflections

Gathering together as a team, group or family is an exciting way to start the mental week by stimulating the minds and spirits of everyone and most importantly, putting everyone's thoughts on the same page.

To create innovation, create an environment that everyone shares their thoughts, ideas, moments of contemplation with the the entire team - for the entire team. The initial sharing of reflections can be done by the leader of the team. His/her reflections should be on topics that do not directly seem to be relevant to the topics typically discussed. It doesn’t matter. What matters is that when you conclude your reflections, you tie it together with why you feel it is important and then, most importantly, allow the other members of the team to reflect. Sharing of your deepest thoughts based on your personal feelings is the conerstone of innovation.

The goal of sharing reflections is for everyone to come togther on several different levels and fulfill an untapped need by the group that it did not realize it needed. Your personal gratification comes from so many smart people providing you with input and new intelligent thoughts that make you learn...make you understand yourself at a different level than where you see and understand life as it is today.

Morning Reflections are the ultimate team building exercise. It is a moment that everyone looks forward to. It occurs whenever someone has something to say and they need to know why they need to say it!

2. Say "yes" to an idea and see what happens

To create innovation, it is simple. Just say “yes” to an idea and watch that person and idea grow. Too often, within a team, the answer “no” plays too strong a role in demotivating, derailing and demoralizing people and their enthusiasm.

Saying “yes” is empowering. Not to simple things so that you feel good about yourself saying “yes”, that is insulting. Say “yes” to an idea that makes you feel uncomfortable. Then let that person and their idea breath. Watch the winds of innovation slowly permeate everyone. Watch this new innovative force that you are releasing within your team. Experiement. Allow others to experiment...just say “yes”.

3. Thinking is doing - sharing is innovating

The action of thinking is extremely powerful. The famous statue called “The Thinker” stimulates millions of people each year to think about the power of thinking. Thinking is when we solve many of our most challenging problems and enjoy our most favorite moments over-and-over. Thinking is doing!

Empower the people in your life to think. Change their thinking patterns so that they no longer have a goal of filling up their Outlook calendar or time but set aside time to...think. The thinking we do during a meeting is not high quality enough. If you want more results, you should “do” less and “think” more. The results will be exponential.

Lastly, share your thoughts. Share your reflections and allow the wonders of innovation influence the decisions you make.

4. Don’t spend time “finding yourself”, “create yourself”

Often we spend time thinking, contemplating and trying to find something that does not exist. Who we are, who we shall be, is not yet determined. It is to be determined by the time, actions we take and the thoughts we have. No one controls who we are other than us.

It has never been about “finding ourselves”. We were never lost. The next moment in your life is yet to be written. Write it as you see yourself. How you see your self. Every moment is a new opportunity to be the person you want to be. Create yourself now...

5. Change is everywhere, you see it if you look for it

Change is constant. Change defines us. It is the one true universal constant. When we ignore the fact that change is constant, we are ignoring ourselves and others.

Elevate yourself by embarrassing change “before” it happens. Introduce change into every project, every discussion and every thought. Assume that what you think will be the conclusion, will never be and enjoy the stimulation that comes from life’s unexpected outcomes.

Change is normal. Same-Same is not!

The End of the Line...of our ability to articulate

This evening the 8 Norwegian students and I attend the private screening of "End of the Line" in room 803 of the Killman Building at New York University (NYU) campus in SoHo. The documentary clearly explained the results of over fishing which has decimated our global fishing population and will eliminate all fish in the oceans (99%) by the year 2048.

What I was taken back mostly by was not the obvious depressing facts of what is occurring in our oceans but by the embarrassing ignorance and lack of formal education that the student body of NYU displayed during the Q&A of the movie. (The movie stopped half way so the attendees had a Q&A session with an invited expert on the fishing population declining issues).

What and how words (sounds at best) were said by the students embarrassed me to my core! Several NYU students (7+) asked questions to the guest expert and when explaining themselves, they could not articulate their thoughts nor form a sentence, even in the simplest fashion. The 8 Norwegian students immediately told me that they could not follow what was being said because they did not understand what the people we struggling to articulate. The level of English being spoken by the gross majority of NYU students attending this event was sub 4th grade level, at best.

When did the word "like" become a replacement for the usage of nouns, pronouns, verbs, adverbs and prepositions? It was not a case of "the nerves". The NYU students seem quite confident and normal in how they spoke and the easy by which they addressed the audience.

My reflection on the this event is that a university is only as good as its last graduating class, that's it. The pedigree of the Alumni association does not reflect the lack difficulty to obtain a degree from an institution.

I am formally embarrassed on behalf of all Americans who believe that we send our kids away to better themselves and to find out that the Universities have not set the bar higher, but do not even use a bar. How can any teacher with any dignity allow a student to articulate themselves in a plethora of the word "like"?

To all academic professionals who allow this to occur in their classrooms, you should be ashamed! To parents who work hard at paying the University tuition bill, ask your child's school if you can sit in on a few classes and be prepared for a Twilight Zone moment, and to the students that think they are so smart and yet speak in Elmer J. Fudd English, seriously, your an international embarrassment and if you continue, you will be unemployable because the employers will shriek at your attempt to phonetically say your name when they initially greet you.

I am ashamed and embarrassed. Too bad, the students have too much pride to share in this shame with me...

Dimension of Consciousness at a Food Shleter in NYC

Very tired today, mentally and physically. I think the events that shapped yesterday took a toll on me more then I allowed my conscious mind to recognize. Today, I paid the price for the ignorance of thinking that I could solely bare the weight of taking care of 8 students when encountering a dead body on the subway, "my" first soup kitchen, the glory of a smile from an old lady in the soup kitchen, and the beauty of having company with so many amazing students who I now consider my friends.

Weight...Burden...Impulse...Spontaneity, this defines my state-of-mind during this week. It might seem to the students that I have a soliloquy pre-written for each event that we experience in NYC, I don't. My trick to having the right words, at the right time, is being in the moment and speak to them as if I was a 3rd person giving myself advice. No one has a prepared speech for when you encounter a dead body on the train...No one!

I took this moment and handle it with care, did not make a big scene and got off on next stop of the train to protect ourselves from any more spiritual infliction. That was very hard. I got the students in a circle and explained to them what they just saw and most importantly, felt. How does someone explain death on a subway car to a 17 yr. old?

When we arrived in the soup kitchen, I spent 10 mins. explaining what it meant for 100 people to be there and why, though it looked strange to them that everyone was sleepiong but that this was the happiest moment of their day. How do I know these things? How do I know that "I" have the right answers...I talk from the deepest reaches of my heart and I don't stop talking until my heart is clearly on the outside of my skin.

My exhaustion today came from that yesterday scared me more then I allowed myself to reflect on. How close have I been to complete poverty and a soup kitchen myself. With risk comes reward and so comes complete financial failure. How many times have I had the thought that I probably feel quite at home in a soup kitchen since society hasn't always supported my existence at times.

Soup kitchens are mirrors of our alternative dimenions of our reality when we decieded to turn left instead of right somewhere in the past. In our alternative dimension, we are the homeless one without the hope and possibilities. I strongly believe this because how else can we explain our emotional understanding of compassion to others. How do we go on when we can feel that a part of us is actually experienceing this experience, right then, right now.

It is because we have experienced it, just not within our recognized dimension of consciousness. My mind goes out to everyone who has visited a food shelter and felt that they could be there too.

New York’s Rotten Apple (part I)

It is 10:33pm and we have another four hours before we land at JFK airport. I guess that is symbolic. It was back in 1995, I visited JFK when under construction to learn about the state-of-the-art natural gas plant that was being built by Brooklyn Union Gas (today it has been acquired by KeySpan Energy). During this visit, I could not help but be in awe over the breath of hope and glory that the new JFK airport was to bring to NYC. The local unions and crime families had delayed the completion of JFK by over a decade but yet, as always, hope lived strong. Just like my hope that I can be the Pappa, brother, friend and guardian angel to these students who believe so much in me that they have chosen to fly 3,000 miles to NYC with only a mobile phone to their parents to grow up and learn what it means to exist.

As I sit on this flight, I have listened to my favorite podcast on my mobile phone and watched an excellent documentary on the financial crisis on Wall Street in 2008 that should have changed the morality of bankers but instead made them more defensive of their greed. All the while I can question whether I have done enough to prep these kids for this trip. Have I planned enough during our 7 days there so that they “truly” learn what it means “to be”.

It has taken me 45 years of my life to get to this moment, on this airplane, in this tight tourist class seat to just be here. How do you teach students who are 17 and 18 yrs old to have this type of reflection and realization at 20,000 feet with snoring people with smelly feet sitting at their sides…this is my challenge and I am so excited about it.

My plan is to…2 of the students just came over to check on me! Is that amazing. They are checking on me. I am so lucky. I wonder who is taking who on this trip? As I look at them, they constantly smile back at me and I can’t remember the last time I smiled so much so often. I need to share this inner peace more with my family who ashamedly get to see the more stressed sides of me but they are the foundation of my existence and I have not taken them for granted since my daughter was born.

Life changes in the moment that your first child is born. If you’re a Pappa only by name and don’t feel what I am saying, logg of the ‘net, put on your pajamas and spend the evening laying next to your kids in their bed feeling the essence of life that you have no clue about laying next to you.

My plan is to stick to the general plan but to be in the moment with them while we walk the streets in NYC. This is going to be very hard and very easy. To exist in the moment, one must be open to everything and everyone. Total vulnerability is required. This is 180 degrees opposite of how to safely walk down the streets in NYC, trust me! The challenge is to be both or the goal is to let the city take us and trust that my instincts can properly keep us out of harms way.

I want them to see the people of NY like I see them. I want them to spontaneously approach strangers and just start a conversation. I want them to feed off of the people as I parasitically do whenever I am in NY. It is what we all do in this city, that is why we all love to hate each other and why we love each other as well.

Four of the students have formed a line to go the bathroom togetheron the airplane. It’s wonderful to see the sillyness and joy of youth. It’s not that I am old but one forgets how amazing it is to just exist and enjoy the moment of being silly with friends. Maybe, I don’t have to teach them anything. Maybe they already know this from their own recent childhood. Maybe my role is to transfer this genuine vision of ourselves and to carefully weave into a current view of another dimension of the same world. Maybe it is a lesson in co-existence at multiple dimensions within the same dimension of existence but at the same time being careful not to disturb the balance of the transformation from child to adult?

In geographic terms, this trip has not even begun but in mental terms my relationship with these students has already changed me. Me, the guy sitting in seat 17K sitting in between Mr. stinky feet and a innoncent looking French girl. I guess my two current roommates represent the dicotamy of this trip. The separation of two worlds and me sitting in the middle of both.

If only I could figure out how to keep the balance of this universe without disturbing them and going to the bathroom…

Innovation within the Public Sector is "Cultural Innovation"

Innovation within the Public Sector means Cultural Innovation, not technological innovation. The current public sector has for decades sat back relying upon its previous foresight which the generation of today have not earned, nor deserved. The previous public servants, ending in the 1950’s, were truly visionary. They were controversial for daring to plan 50+ years in advance for a society that they knew would evolve faster their own but what they could not imagine was that all the generations after them would not evolve.

They could not have imagined the new wealth coming from the private sector which would create a brain and cultural drain upon the public sector that would leave it with the lowest common denominator of thinkers and highest common denominator of opportunists. They did not think that the long history of accomplishments within the public sector would almost completely stop.

This current lack of awareness of the prestige of the past and the honor of being a public servant today, has brought upon a renaissance within the public sector to once again provide a higher quality of life for each person that the public sector serves. Innovation in the public sector is and must be today, 100% cultural, inside and out.

The global economic crisis has matured from bank bailouts in the western world to civil unrest, in the Middle East. The trend, and there is a definite trend, is that these occurrences will not stop, and will be emerging in non-emerging countries as well.

As I write this post, Libya is on fire, the smoke in Egypt is smoldering, Ireland is picking up the pieces, and the people of Pakistan are experiencing inflationary price increases that make it no longer possible to feed their families. This new standard of life is deplorable and can be fixed. The time now, as bleak as it may seem to those who are in the eye of the storm, is an opportunity for those at the periphery to act and fix what is broken. This is the call-to-action, for the public sector. The bell is ringing in the form of tears from the people.

Civil unrest is the new norm. People are living life in the first person, not the 3^rd person or by proxy anymore. Through the use of Twitter and Facebook, people are speaking in real-time with messages and facts that are not filtered. There writings are instantly changing the intelligence level and considerations of the public. The public has gone public! The dumbing down of the population continues but does not grow, it is being reversed by the human necessity to act, when being acted upon. The inflection point for the public sector has arrived!

A Blue Ocean mobile service strategy

To kickoff 2011, Norwegian mobile operator's have started a price war setting the price of 200 nok ($35) for 4 months of unlimited mobile phone calls. This is very cheap and great for the consumer but continues to drive telecom away from innovation and shine a single light so that people only pay attention to price.

I strongly believe that the Norwegian mobile market is now perfect for a "Blue Ocean" strategy. All the competitors in the market are focusing on price as their differentiator. Most of them offer the same mobile phones (except for the iPhone), same mobile services: SMS, MMS, email services, and many sharing mobile networks so their truly isn't any differentiator in the market. Hence, a mobile operator that focus on the people and their needs is now needed.

The Norwegian mobile user has money to spend on their mobile services. Many have 12 or 18 month contracts that they obligated into so that they have the latest mobile phone. This is normal in Norway and many other countries in Europe and the US. The difference is that in Norway, people do not hesitiate to pay "top-dollar" for an item that they deem is of high quality or if it has a buzz effect associated to it. Consumers have lots of disposable money and even though the financial crisis is occuring all-around Europe, it is not present in Norway.

A new mobile service (it can come from an existing operator) that focuses on the high end customers is now perfect for this market. The emphasis should be on all aspects of the mobile customer, including having shops that are extremely fancy so that it is prestigious just to walk into one. This will create a massive "I want to be seen in this shop" effect that is very important to people.

Once in the shop, each person is greeted personally by the manager who will escort them to a rep. or handle them personally. If there are too many people, then a cafe lounge will provide exotic coffee (at high prices) to the people waiting. The atmosphere will not be a typical waiting area but an experience. It will cater to the high end senses. The furniture will be designer and the books to read will be about Style, Fashion, Food, and Vacations. Everything about the shop will be catering to the sense of exclusivity and a sense of I deserve this.

The phones offered will only be the best models by all manufacturers and custom mobile phones with lots of bling will be sold so that customers can express their personal sense of style and their status in society. Also, the policy for customer service is replace the phone, don't repair, don't discuss. For these high end users, they only get the best.

The highlight of the service is its Consierge Service for all customers. If they need tickets to a show in the evening, dinner reservations, a car rental, etc. these services are available with a shortnumber or SMS.

What this mobile provider is telling its customers is that "you" are what is important to me. It moves the discussion to a new Blue Ocean market based on personal experiecnes and services. The market for this new servcie provider is untouched. The size of the market is probably 5%-10% of the population and a goal of 2% market penetration is possible in the first 3yrs. with out difficulty. Margins would be over 50% and more.

2011 is a great year for innovation. The innovation of people and how we interact with one another.

Over the years, my greatest professional satisfaction has come from sharing my experiences and network with others and introducing people-to-people. I am making it a theme for this year and beyond!
As part of my fantastic job at Skattteetaten as Head of Innovation, I will be traveling to many different cities and locations in Norway throughout January and February 2011. I have wanted to do this road-trip for a long-time. It is a road trip to meet and gather together innovative people throughout Norway.

I am looking to gather people who are pulling their hair out with energy and specific ideas to make a change in society and in life using technology and/or their time with other people, especially kids. 2011 will be a year of great changes in your business and personal lives and I prefer to be a catalyst of those changes.

Memories of my first role-model

One thing that has consistently played repetitively throughout my life is the challenges of meeting people who are not always older but because they no longer are "young" they think they have the right to be a leader or senior person in some way. This is ridiculous.

As on the streets of the Lower East Side where I grew up, you have to earn your respect. Yes, older people are treated with respect for their age but that doesn't mean that the youthful have to listen to them. Those extra seconds of time in which people spend to listen to ones words of wisdom are the defining moments of a lifetime of taking chances, failing, succeeding, being embarrassed, being humbled and a large quantity of spending time in the dis-comfort zone knowing that that is the place to be if your truly going to accomplish anything.

There is a grace that should accompany age. You can see this in a person's eyes, their demeanor, their simple ability to look at you - smile and make you empowered from the inside. These people, from all sort of backgrounds, are the elder statesmen of our time. They are the role-models of every generation and every neighborhood. Think back to when you were a child, and you will recall one person who made the difference.

For me, it was an old lady who sat by her-self playing chess everyday in our park. One day, my friends and I went over to her to see what she was doing in our private playground (it wasn't private but when your 10yrs old, you think everything in the street is yours :)

She was the sweetest lady I had met to that moment. I was shocked at how her aura of energy totally captivated me. When she looked at me, I felt her eyes seeing my soul. I didn't feel like a kid, I felt like a man who was being treated with respect. My friends ran off to play and I sat down next to her on a warm summer day and started to learn how to play chess. Right in the middle of the hot summer, with my friends running around, I started experiencing life in a different way. There was no screaming, no yelling, no running, only quiet words and biblical patience on her part waiting for me to understand the immensity behind this amazing game.

I think of this old woman often because I made the mistake of never getting to know here. Never asking her about her. What did she do before retiring? Who was she? Why was she this way with me? I lost a moment that I was too young to capture but aware enough to know that I was losing something.

This lady and people like her deserve the "Leader" and "Role Model" titles we place on certain people in our lives. When was the last time you met someone, a stranger, and you allowed them into your life? The lessons and moments of a child are defining and so are every moment since. It is never too late to be more then you are now.

I am excited to someday hopefully, touch a young person in the same way, from the inside-out. That way I can make sure that I will not grow old to be one of those people who say they deserve respect because their old...

5 Reasons Why Huawei Shall Implode

A few weeks ago I met with the Huawei people at Telenor's offices (Oslo) to discuss several things especially what is their approach when it comes to working with a global telecom operator. What I realized moments into our discussion was that the stereotypical American arrogance is now alive and well within the Chinese culture of Huawei!

Huawei is going to implode and in a BIG way!

Here are 5 reasons:

Giving away free mobile network hardware to win contracts does win new operator customers but that doesn't mean the mobile operator loves you. They don't. They actually can't stand your presence within their network but you just saved them over $300+ million for a national mobile network
Customer relationship can not be performed by a dedicated team that doesn't speak to the rest of the Huawei organization. Silo account management is transparent and the mobile operator will never tell you that they see through this every time you speak
Arrogance killed Alcatel, Nortel and Lucent...trust me it will kill Huawei too!
Hiring new employees at a growth rate of 100% every 6 months leads to inefficiencies and stagnation. Employees will begin looking at the clock more then their PC screens. When this happens within an IT organization, the implosion is 1 year away.
Mobile operators will absorb all your new ideas and strategies but will not invest their future in you unless your willing to give it all away again for free

There is an enormous opportunity right now for the creation of new start-up companies that are building their business models and new networks based on all the free Huawei equipment that will be retired in the next 4 – 6 years.

This is allot of equipment and the first start-up that can innovate and create a business model that benefits the mobile operator will be a huge winner. These start-ups should be called, “TUHUs”, which stands for “Thank You Huawei”. It's a perfect name since Huawei is laying the ground work for TUHUs to come and deploy new services like mesh hybrid networks that combine WiMax, LTE, UMTS and WiFi all into a simple mobile data package that operators can find a profit margin within.

VC, Investment Banks and frustrated entrepreneurs should immediately be discussing this approaching opportunity that needs to be monetized. There are billions of dollars to be made because of the impending Huawei implosion.

Invest in a management team that can build and an adviser that can foresee what and where this will happen first. There is no time to waste.

IESE Business School has selected WiHood from hundreds of social entrepreneur companies in Europe to speak at the 2010 IESE Business School "Doing Good and Doing Well" Conference on Responsible Business.

I have been asked to speak at two sessions which include a round-table format which I like very much because of the spontaneity of the questions and the pressure.

I am honored to have been chosen to speak at such a prestigious Business School and event. There are many social entrepreneur events in Europe but many of them are in a format to appeal to corporations or agencies for funds. This conference is to provide these top students the opportunity to ask the difficult questions to the CEOs of those companies so that they understand the implications of the challenges that arise for all social entrepreneurs. Why Google's Voice strategy required the acquisition of Gizmo5

For many years, Google avoided involving itself in the VoIP industry. It was courted by every major and minor VoIP player at conferences, meetings, anywhere Google showed up. Google discounted the value of VoIP and thought VoIP was all about voice and billing minutes. After its acquisition of Grand Central, Google finally started listening to the underlying layer of VoIP, the protocols and signaling that powers VoIP. It began to make sense to them.

The strategic importance of Google Voice has increased exponentially and continues to do so because "voice" is the connecting bridge between all people. By having a "voice" strategy that reinforced its advertising strategy, Google would be in a even more powerful position then without.

These days during the global financial crisis are very difficult, especially if you have a young company or idea that needs funding. Don't follow the path of previous startups and kiss up to Venture Capitalist. Their job is to make money off of you, that's their main and only focus. The free coffee and donuts every time you meet them is a smoke screen.

Read the story about the Zappos sale to Amazon.com and how a experienced entrepreneur was forced to sell his incredible company at a price he wasn't able to influence because the VCs controlled the ability to sell the company whenever and to whomever.

Find another way, a way that has not succeded or been tried before. Believe that your new idea in finding money for your company is better then any VC can ever help you to achieve.

Use Twitter, Facebook, and follow trends. Leverage you passion and create a community around what you love and have that community love you back. BUT don't go to a VC!

After 10 years of raising children, my first 190km bike race

This past Saturday (June 20, 2009), my wife, Camilla, (former cross country All-American and 3rd place in US duathlon championships in '96) and I did the Lillehammer-Oslo (Norway) bike race. It was her third time doing the race and my first. It was my first the over race in 10 years since I decided to prioritize the kids and not me. What an amazing experience.

I have given lots of thought to what happened out there and it wasn't like a rebirth, it was an emotional and mental lesson on what it means to exist. During the first 100km I was riding on pure over confidence, that I can do this race because "I am man and I used to do these races before". It was all wrong!

At 40km, I pulled up to my wife and told her, "This is a seriously long distance race!" She smiled and said "I told you!". From 40km - 100km, I fought mentally to find a place for me but I couldn't. Nothing I had in my head for the race was helping me to ride the race. I was barely keeping up with my wife and my mind was in over drive thinking all the time about everything and nothing. It (my conscience and non-conscience mind) were looking for excuses and still I was not riding the race.

It was an incredible negative experience to be at war with my own thoughts. I had completely forgotten what it feels, what it means, what it takes to do a race. I felt like the overweight kid trying to go out for a sport in high school. I was completly out of my zone or comfort level. It was never this bad before, even when I did my first triathlon, I was more mentally prepared.

At around 100km, everything changed. I gave into the fact that I did not train enough for this race. I am 10 years older without 10 years of miles in my legs to show for it. I have spent most of my waking hours with my 3 kids and being as much a part of their life as they would allow me and I would allow myself. What I was doing out here in the middle of nowhere in Norway was ridiculous, insane, embarrassing and humbling! And that's moment, I clicked!

Everything fell into place. I found the rhythm that I had not had. It was not the same rhythm of 10 years ago but a new rhythm that still felt my own but different. My lower back now had elasticity and I was pulling on the pedals with ease no matter the terrain. I wasn't my old self but I was now flying and we were finally going at a racing speed.

What I believe happened was that I accepted where I am now and what I can and can not do now and completely forgot about what I did before. Those were great memories but if I want anymore, I must focus on achievements in the future not in the past. This is probably very much a "guy thing", something I didn't think would be applicable to me but I am 100% guilty.

My wife still complements me on my ride. I have apologized to her for staying with me many times since the race and will continue to do so until next year, if she decides to race with me, again. I expect my year of apologies will warrant an argument or two but I welcome it. She could have abandoned my stubborn, mentally over compensating, stupid macho self at any time. But she did not.

I learned a life time worth of lessons in this one ride. I decided that I would not do an Ironman when I'm 50 as I have promised myself since my 25th birthday. I rather take the time it takes to be so prepared and invest it in my family. It took me getting my butt kicked by myself to realize that the best life I can live is not training, all the time, but spending as much time as possible with the ones that I love training with them. I plan on having my kids crush me at a couple of races in the future. I looked forward to those days!

I hope everyone has such an epiphany. I will continue to train and be a triathlete once again but this time around you'll see me with my kids...trying to keep up with my wife, a woman that could have done a sub 5-hour race and instead she kept me company.

How to improve Skype video

One of the most searched topics on my blog over the years has been how to improve Skype video. So, I thought I would share some advice on what you can do that will make a large improvement in your Skype video experience in less then 5 mintues.

#1) Update your video card driver...

Many PCs are still using the video card driver that was pre-installed when the PC was new. These generic pre-installed drivers will provide you with a very bad Skype video experience...extremly bad!

Check your PC to see who is your video card manufacturer. You should see names like "Intel, NVidia, etc." Go their company website, select "software upgrade" or "Driver" or something to that effect. The new driver software is free and requires you to reboot your PC when finished.

#2) Choose "Millions of colors" from the "properties of your video card"

Once you have upgraded your video card driver, you will immediately see the color benefits from the millions of more colors that are now possible. Benefit: the skin color of the people you are seeing on video is now life like, as if they were actually in the same rooms as you!

The speed of the internet connection does not matter. The colors will now always be life like.

#3) Choose the largest screen size from your video card.

For example, I have my PC video cards set to display at "1440 x 900 pixels". This is the largest setting my video card will display with "millions of colors". Try choosing the largest "pixel" size you can from your recently updated video card driver.

The benefit will be in the increase details and elimination of the pixilization of the people you are seeing on Skype. It will be a clear, perfect and precise picture.

#4) Clean the glass lens of your web camera

You should clean the lens of your web camera on the 1st of every month. Dust and dirt collect on the web camera's lens and slowly degrades the image that we are displaying of ourselves to others on Skype. We can't notice it but everyone watching you will notice.

I've had people comment to me after cleaning my lens, if I had just purchased a new web camera! This is the quickest and easy way to improve Skype video. Use a little water and a very soft clothes or tissue paper. Be very careful not to scratch the lens. Work slowly.

#5) Use natural sun light (and not behind you)

Natural sun light will provide your video image with the best image of you. Make sure the sun light is shinning on you and not shimming over your shoulder towards the web cam. This will cause the webcam to compenstae and make your image appear blackend out because of the sun's rays are shinning directly into the webcam's lens.

Always have the sun shinning on you from behind the PC, not from behind you.
