Due to Resident Evil Revelation’s online features not being fully available to play much before the game’s launch and my limited time with the game, we will postpone our review until we feel we have played an adequate amount of the full game. Until then, I will be releasing these periodic “play logs” with my experiences and thoughts.

About a week ago, I received a review copy of Resident Evil Revelations for Wii U from Capcom. I had not played the original on Nintendo 3DS, so this was a brand new experience for me. Further, I have only played a handful of the Resident Evil games over the past few years. As soon as I started it up, I was captured by the games music and graphics. They really did a great job bringing the player into the world. For a survival-horror game, this is a big plus!

The game’s controls are rather easy to pick up. Initially, I played with the GamePad, while using both screens. The TV showed the main game, and the touch screen showed the map and such. This was helpful, especially when trying to find my way back to a specific location. For those who have played modern RE games, there is not much of a difference for controls on the GamePad. I will include my thoughts on the Pro Controller in the next installment.

The game takes place between RE 4 and 5, which may mean a lot to fans, but for those like me, it does not mean much. You will jump around from character to character, depending on what storyline you are following at the time. The story itself is compelling, and I am excited to see what happens next. In true RE fashion, though, it is a bit scary. After I went through the first chapter, I was somewhat regretting sitting down to play the game at night, after my wife went to bed.

One benefit I really appreciated, though, is the ability to have all the game’s sound go through headphones attached to the GamePad. All I had to do was plug them in, and all sound and music was re-routed to the GamePad. This was extremely helpful during the late-night play-throughs, since I did not have to worry about the TV volume. This also added to the effect, providing a simulated surround-sound.

I still have a bit to play, including the online features. Join us in few days for the next installment of my RE Revelations Play-Log.

PRESS RELEASE

Nintendo 3DS First-Party Software Sales Are Up 52 Percent in 2013

A strong launch for LEGO® City Undercover: The Chase Begins helped Nintendo 3DS™ maintain its torrid pace in 2013. Through the first four months of the year, Nintendo has already sold more than 2.1 million units of first-party Nintendo 3DS software in the U.S. alone, an increase of 52 percent over the same time period last year. In 2012, it took 30 weeks for Nintendo 3DS to sell 2 million units of first-party software. In 2013, the platform accomplished that same feat in 18 weeks.

With the peak holiday selling season still ahead and a strong lineup of upcoming games that includes Donkey Kong Country™ Returns 3Don May 24, Animal Crossing™: New Leaf on June 9, Mario and Luigi™: Dream Team on Aug. 11, as well as new titles in the Pokémon™, Mario Golf™ and Legend of Zelda™ franchises, Nintendo 3DS is poised to have the strongest year of sales in its history.

Some notable sales numbers* achieved by Nintendo in April include:

LEGO City Undercover: The Chase Begins sold nearly 94,000 combined physical and digital copies after launching on April 24.

Luigi’s Mansion™: Dark Moon sold more than 140,000 combined physical and digital units in April and has now sold more than 530,000 total units to date.

In its sixth month on the market, New Super Mario Bros.™ U for the Wii U™ system increased its lifetime sales total to nearly 770,000 combined physical and digital units.

During the next several months, a cavalcade of fan-favorite franchises will launch for Wii U. This includes Game & Wario™ on June 23, Pikmin™ 3 on Aug. 4, Disney’s Planes from Disney Interactive on Aug. 6 and Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell® Blacklist™ from Ubisoft onAug. 20. At the upcoming E3 trade show in June in Los Angeles, Nintendo expects to show attendees upcoming Wii U games from the Mario Kart™, Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda and Super Smash Bros.™ franchises.

*Data regarding physical sales of games in April are from the NPD Group. Data regarding digital downloads of games and combined physical/digital life-to-date numbers are from Nintendo’s internal sales figures. All numbers are specific to the United States only.

How many new games would make you happy? How about 13? That’s what we get in today’s Nintendo Download.

Over this next week, the Wii U eShop will grow by at least five more games. Super Metroid was technically released yesterday, but be sure to download it for only 30 cents, while you still can. Also out for the Virtual Console on Wii U is Super Mario Bros. 2 and Super Ghouls’n Ghosts. Moving over to “full retail” games, you can download two of them this upcoming Tuesday. Both Resident Evil Revelations and LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes will be available for purchase from the eShop.

Over on the 3DS eShop, we also have continued growth. Swords & Soldiers 3D hits the handheld, along with THE STARSHIP DAMREY, Bowling Bonanza 3D, and Dress to Play: Magic Bubbles! If you’re looking for the “old-school,” though, check out Mega Man 5 or Harvest Moon, which both hit the 3DS Virtual Console today.

DSiWare and Wii Virtual Console are not to be left out. Both increase their roster by one today. DSiWare gets California Super Sports, and the Wii Virtual Console gets THE KING OF FIGHTERS ’99.

There are also a few new sales on the Wii U eShop. First up is one for Super Mario Bros. 2. If you purchase Super Mario World, you will get SMB2 for 50% off until May 23, 2013. The other sale is for BIT.TRIP Presents… Runner 2: Future Legend of Rhythm Alien. If you have not downloaded this game yet, it is 25% off until May 30, 2013. Check out our review for more details about the game.

PRESS RELEASE

D3Publisher and Cartoon network Announce new Video Games for Adventure Time, Regular Show, and Ben 10 for Fall 2013

Mordecai and Rigby! Finn and Jake! Ben and Rook! Cartoon Network’s all-stars lead the charge in brand new video game adventures this fall!

LOS ANGELES – May 14, 2013 – D3Publisher (D3P) and Cartoon Network Enterprises (CNE) today announced the development of three new video games based on the most popular Cartoon Network award-winning animated shows. This fall, video games based on Cartoon Network’s highest-rated shows Adventure Time and Ben 10 Omniverse will launch, as well as the first video game for one of Cartoon Network’s top series, Regular Show.

Following the mathematical success of the IGN Editors’ Choice Award-winning Adventure Time: Hey Ice King! Why’d You Steal Our Garbage?!!, show creator Pendleton Ward again teams up with developer WayForward to create Adventure Time: Explore the Dungeon Because I DON’T KNOW!. The all-new action game will be available for the first time ever on the Wii U™ system from Nintendo, the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, the PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system, and Windows PC, as well as a return to the Nintendo 3DS™ hand-held system this fall. In a completely new storyline and adventure and featuring the voices of the show’s most popular characters, fans will have to save the Candy Kingdom by exploring the mysteries surrounding a massive Secret Royal Dungeon deep below the Land of Ooo. Select from an assortment of fan-favorite characters from the show, including Finn, Jake, Marceline, Cinnamon Bun, and more, and team up with your friends in four-player co-operative multiplayer as the Adventure Time world comes to life. Adventure Time is the pop culture sensation, Emmy® Award-nominated, top-rated animated comedy, and its popularity continues to soar across the globe among fans of all ages.

Making its first foray into the video game world, Regular Show: Mordecai and Rigby In 8-Bit Land brings the characters and humor from the Emmy® Award-winning animated comedy to Nintendo 3DS this fall. Regular Show is the Cartoon Network series starring best friends Mordecai and Rigby and their adventures as groundskeepers of the local park. When Mordecai and Rigby get transported into some of their favorite video games they’ll have to use their best skills and unique abilities to traverse the various challenges to escape and get back home in this ‘eggscellent’ journey. Developed by WayForward, in close collaboration with show creator JG Quintel, Mordecai and Rigby prove that a day in the life of Regular Show is anything but.

In Ben 10 Omniverse 2, the latest installment in a top-selling global interactive franchise, players will be able to control Ben Tennyson in an all new adventure set in the Ben 10 universe as Ben battles a new foe, the Incurseans, and infiltrates this new enemy’s intergalactic warship as he finds his way home. Though he’s still armed with his trusty Omnitrix, Ben will face brand new challenges including chase and escape sequences as well as constant battles against the forces of evil. Players will have to make every action count as you race Ben against the clock, creating the most kinetic Ben 10 game to date. Developed by High Voltage Software for consoles, and by 1st Playable Productions for the handheld version, Ben 10 Omniverse 2 is based on the long-running, popular Cartoon Network animated series, and follows the adventures of Ben Tennyson, a teenager who wields the Omnitrix, a device that allows him to transform into various alien forms such as Gravattack, Four Arms, and many more alien forms. Ben 10 Omniverse 2 will be available this fall for the Wii U system, the Wii™ system, the Nintendo 3DS hand-held system, Xbox 360, and the PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system.

“We are excited to extend our partnership with Cartoon Network on the next iteration of Adventure Time and Ben 10 video games and we now have the opportunity to introduce the very first Regular Show video game to the millions of fans that watch the Emmy winning comedy each week,” said Peter Andrew, vice president of product development, D3P. “Having the creative talents of these widely popular animated shows working directly with very proven development teams, it has given us the recipe to create the very best and most authentic video game experiences that will please fans of all ages.”

”For Cartoon Network fans, this fall will feature the release of three fantastic games from D3Publisher that tap in to the unique tone, fun and adventure of each of these great original series,” said Pete Yoder, vice president of consumer products, Cartoon Network Enterprises. “With strong creator involvement and a sense of what games our fans want to play, we’re excited to build on the tremendous success of last year’s Adventure Time game and extend it across all consoles, as well as introduce our first-ever Regular Show game and continue the global excitement around an all-new Ben 10 game.”

These video games are currently rated “RP” (Rating Pending) by the ESRB and for more information in the coming months about these titles, please visit D3Publisher at www.d3publisher.us.

Many have stated lately that Nintendo is going downhill in the area of hardware, and they should move their focus solely to software. If you remember, this is the same move SEGA made a few years ago. With both Wii U and Nintendo 3DS fairly early in their life-cycles, we turned to you in our most recent poll. We asked: if you had the ability to decide Nintendo’s future, should they begin to publish games on mobile platforms, specifically iOS and Android?

After 590 votes, it seems like the majority of you believe it would be wise for Nintendo to branch out into the mobile market. This does not mean they should stop making hardware, per say, but these 335 (57%) people believe they should take Mario and Zelda to the mobile phones. The other 255 (43%) said Nintendo should keep doing what they have been doing. They see no reason to move Metroid and Star Fox to a smart phone.

Yes, it is true that Nintendo, via GameFreak, has brought Pokémon to iOS. This, however, is only a companion app. Will they ever bring our beloved characters to another platform not created by them? As of right now, there is no chance. Nonetheless, we are seeing Nintendo step into the mobile phone market little by little. The next step is the upcoming Miiverse app, where you can access Miiverse on the go.

What do you think about the results? Do you agree? If you answered one way or the other, feel free to share why you voted that way.

Also, be sure to answer our newest poll: “Do you agree with Nintendo’s approach to E3 2013?” Check it out in the column to the right.

Game – Kung Fu Rabbit
Version – Wii U eShop ($4.99)
Rating – E for Everyone

Story and Plot

As you might expect, there isn’t too much going on in the way of a story here, but it’s at least a quirky intro. So you and your bunny pals are just chilling at the dojo, when all of a sudden, evil, hungry aliens invade and snatch up your pals for a bunny banquet – not as the guest of honor mind you, but as the main course! Now, it’s up to you, Kung Fu Rabbit with all your skills, to save your bunny pals from the gullet of the evil aliens.

Gameplay and Controls

Gameplay is broken down into 3 worlds and 1 bonus cavern, each world houses 20 levels apiece. Your goal in each level is to reach the trapped bunny at the end of the level, and since one hit kills, you must take care to avoid enemies and obstacles alike. The levels are laid out in such a manner that you must be precise with your jumps and time them accordingly. One of your only Kung Fu abilities, is being able to cling to a wall, while slowly sliding down, and wall jump. This wall-clinging, jump ability is actually your greatest, if only strength and every level is designed to challenge your ability and skill. Oddly enough, for a rabbit with the Kung Fu label, you’re quite weak when it comes to evil aliens. In fact, you’re nothing more than a pushover when face to face with an enemy however, get behind an enemy and you’ll dispatch of them with one swipe of your paw.

In addition to saving your bunny friends, you’ll find 3 normal carrots and 1 golden carrot placed around each level. By collecting all the carrots, especially the golden one, you not only improve your score, but you also earn in-game currency to buy items in the dojo. These items will make your quest easier and are well worth the extra effort to collect all 4 carrots in each level. The levels are short in length, most of them taking a couple of minutes or so to complete. This design makes Kung Fu Rabbit a great game to pick up and play, especially when your time is limited. For those of us who are short on time and patience, you’ll be glad to hear that restarting a level is quick and painless and even further encourages you to replay levels.

Controlling your Rabbit is quite easy as there are multiple controls schemes supported. I only played with the Gamepad, and I found it quite easy to run and wall jump about. I would say that anyone could pick up and play Kung Fu Rabbit within a matter of minutes, it’s really easy to control. You can use either the d-pad or left thumb-stick to control your rabbit, attacking is done automatically, so long as you are behind an enemy’s back, and jumping is done with A, B buttons.

Graphics and Sound

The graphics are, for the most part, simple, yet effective in creating an engaging atmosphere. That is not to say the simplicity is a negative in any way, by no means is that the case. In fact, the visuals are quite pleasing in their simplicity. Your character and yes, even the enemies are all designed to look cute and each have a cartoon quality about them. The environment itself has enough detail to make it interesting and look alive. Visually, I was pleased with the small details, and yes, even the simple design and layout.

The audio, while charming, suffers from a lack of variety. I have no doubts that you’ll surely enjoy the sounds of Kung Fu Rabbit as he ‘pitter patters’ across the levels and shouts with glee as he rescues his trapped bunny friends. I suppose, that isn’t even really where the repetitive nature of the audio will bother you the most, but rather in the background music of each level. Other than this one little gripe, I enjoyed the audio presentation of Kung Fu Rabbit. I only wish I had more to enjoy.

Final Score: 9 out of 10

Neko Entertainment did a great job of porting what was originally an iOS game over to the Wii U eShop. Kung Fu Rabbit proves to be an entertaining , fun, and challenging game with visuals and gameplay that are sure to please everyone who plays. Considering the base amount of content, plus the unlockables and challenge mode, $4.99 is a great price for everything being offered. I strongly encourage you to plop down the $5 and save those bunnies!

+ Easy to pick up and play
+ In-game purchases (upgrades)
+ Visually appealing (looks great in HD)
+ Off-TV Play supported (mirrored)
+ Hours of content
+ Unlockable Challenge Mode (increased difficulty and tile swap of all levels)

- Repetitive audio
– No online or local leaderboards

PRESS RELEASE

Canadian Developer Precursor Games Launches Crowd-funding Campaign for “Shadow of the Eternals”

Hamilton, Ontario – May 6th 2013 – Precursor Games today unveils its debut project Shadow of the Eternals. Developed by the creators of the critically acclaimed Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem, Shadow of the Eternals is an episodic action/adventure game that is likely to gain the attention of gamers everywhere.

Featuring an ensemble cast, Shadow of the Eternals will span over 2500 years of human history. Players will question their own perception of reality as they progress through this mind-altering psychological horror. The Pilot Episode is slated for release Q3 2014 on the Nintendo Wii U and PC.

The emerging studio is taking crowdfunding to the next level by giving the community the ability to contribute content to the game. Precursor Games has also revealed a campaign video and rewards tier system to go with their 1.5 million dollar goal, including pre-orders and exclusive merchandise.

“Precursor Games intends to leave no stone unturned in order to create an unparalleled experience for gamers”, said Paul Caporicci, CEO of Precursor Games. “We have a talented team, incredible technology with CryENGINE and a new business model where we directly integrate the fan base into the development process, allowing for new possibilities and game direction. We are very excited to see where this new direction leads.”

The Shadow of the Eternals crowd-funding campaign is can be found at www.ShadowOfTheEternals.com.

About Precursor Games:

Founded in July of 2012, Precursor Games is comprised of veteran game developers with over 20 years of experience. Precursor Games is an agile, efficient, multi-disciplinary, and collaborative company dedicated to community participation. It is looking to change the way games are made in an ever-changing industry by taking advantage of the emergence of digital distribution, episodic content and community-driven crowdfunding.

FAQ’s

Is Shadow of the Eternals DRM-free?

Yes, we plan to release a DRM-free version. Specific details will be announced in the future.

What platforms will Shadow of the Eternals be on?

We will be focusing on the PC and Wii U. Other platforms may be added in the future if desired by the community and the right funding goals are met.

How do I download Episode 1 on PC or Wii U?

This game is planned for digital distribution on both PC and Wii U. Details will be announced at a later date.

Will Shadow of the Eternals only be in English?

No, we will have subtitles for other languages. Details to follow.

Can you explain the stretch goals?

Shadow of the Eternals will be an episodic series, and our initial goal is 1.5 million dollars. This includes production on the Pilot Episode, game engine costs and core system development. Future episodes of Shadow of the Eternals will be significantly less to produce, and we look forward to announcing the possibility of more episodes based on the success of our campaign.
Additional money raised beyond this will also contribute to things such as in-game perks, additional gaming platforms, and other surprises. The more money that we raise, the more we will deliver based on what our fans want.

Why Crowdfunding and Self-Publishing?

The primary reason to crowdfund Shadow of the Eternals is because it allows us to work directly with our fans, and gain valuable feedback in developing the project. We can develop a rapport with our audience that would otherwise be difficult in a traditional setting.
Secondly, the games industry is currently in a state in which publishers no longer take chances on a project like this. We feel that the best way to bring this title to the public is to release it independently.

What happens if you do not reach your goal?

Our financial goal is a flexible one, and Precursor Games is committed to creating Shadow of the Eternals. All contributions will go directly towards the development of this game and making it a reality.

I would like to pledge, but I don’t really want to design anything. Is this okay?

Of course. Precursor Games will not force you to be involved in the creative development of Shadows of the Eternals if you do not wish to be.

What will the gameplay be like?

The gameplay in Shadow of the Eternals will utilize various mechanics for the different characters and locales, including physical combat, magick, exploration, and sanity systems.

What is Shadow of the Eternals about?

In Shadow of the Eternals, we follow the investigations of Detective Paul Becker, who is called to one of the bloodiest massacres in Louisiana state history. Only two survivors remain from a brutal conflict between two rival cults at the abandoned Pleasant View Hospital: one a suave, clean-cut business man – and the other a hardened, rogue-like biker.
Both men have seemingly lost all memory of who they are – and yet they are compelled to kill each other. As Becker begins his interrogations of the suspects, their combined recollections create the world of Shadow of the Eternals.

What is the Pilot Episode about?

Episode 1: “A Dream within a Dream” is a story that takes place in Hungary, 1610 AD in the castle of Erzébet Bathory. Bathory is considered to be one most notorious female serial killers of all time; torturing and killing as many as 400 young women to death in her obsessive quest for eternal life. We follow the character of Clara, a handmaiden and lover of Bathory’s, and the events that take place during the time of these murders.

Who do I play as?

You play as several characters throughout human history. Throughout Season One you play as Paul Becker, a Louisiana police detective. In the Pilot, you play Clara Rusznyák, a handmaiden to the noblewoman, Erzébet Bathory.

Why is this game episodic? What does that mean?

This means that the game will be delivered in chapters over time, and not all at once. This will allow Precursor Games to interact with gamers, and receive feedback that will both influence and improve the creative decisions involved in producing each episode.
Each episode will feature one or two characters that are part of a larger ensemble cast, as well as different locations across 2500 years of human history. As more episodes are released, players will piece together how each character’s fate is intertwined with one another.

How long is each episode?

Each episode will have approximately 2-4 hours of gameplay.

What kind of game is this?

This is an action-adventure game with horror elements.

Does this game feature multiplayer?

No, this is a single player experience. We believe that single player games are very much alive in this industry, and present a cinematic experience to the gamer unlike any other.

When do you plan to release?

Q3 2014, with subsequent episodes to quickly follow.
