What do you do when you want to add certain symbols, but don't want Wikispace' built in wikitext to mistake your asterisk for an unordered list? In this tutorial, you will learn how to escape text so that you don't accidentally add in some wikitext.

Wikitext is a great tool to use when editing your wikispace. But sometimes, you might find yourself wanting to add a footnote, like this…

* see Leffler and Hemingway on pg.100

But, the asterisk is a part of wikitext, and will cause that footnote to turn into an unordered list with bullet points to the left of it. So how do you prevent wikitext when you simply want to add an asterisk before a footnote? Simply add 2 backticks before and after the words that you’d like to prevent wikitext on. It’s the key right before the 1 key on your keyboard. Here’s what the footnote above would look like to prevent wikitext…

``* see Leffler and Hemingway on pg.100``

Easy as pie.

This quick tip will show you how easy it is to generate an automatic, horizontal Heading 1 links at the top of a wikispace page by using wikitext. Wikitext can be used very easily and quickly within your wikispace. Thanks to Wikispaces for setting this up for us!

This quick tip was brought to my attention by @KiwiJoe90, who you can follow on Twitter. She pointed out that by adding this short piece of wikitext at the top of your wikispace page…

[[toc|flat]]

…will automatically create a horizontal list of Heading 1 links at the top of your wikispace page. Note: This will only work if you have included Level 1 Headings in your wikispace page. Here’s what it looks like on Jo’s wikispace page…

I just received a question from a wikispaces user on how she could remove the borders in her table she just created within her wikispace page. With a little touch of CSS, the borders will be removed in no time. Here’s how you do it…

Click on Manage Wiki, then Look and Feel, then Change or make a new theme, then click on Edit for the Custom Theme that you’ve created from one of the default themes. If you haven’t created a custom theme from one of the default themes yet, you’ll need to do that first before continuing with this tutorial.

Put this small piece of CSS…

.wiki-box .wiki td { border: none; }

right beneath the…

<style type="text/css">

And that’s how you can remove the border from a table that you’ve inserted in your wikispace page.

Stay tuned for more wikispace tutorial quick tips… RETWEET.

Adding just a little bit of inline CSS within the Embed Widget > Other HTML tool can provide a clean design change for your content within your wikispace. I’ve provided a download link below to the HTML file that contains the code I use in the tutorial to create the rounded corner content box. You can change the colors I’ve used within the code by inserting a different 6-digit hex color code for either the background or the border. View the tutorial for simple instructions.

The rounded corners content box will only display rounded corners in Safari and Firefox. IE has yet to implement that feature in their browser.

Update: The current code mentioned in video only lists 10 pages. To list more pages, change it to

[[include component="pageList" limit="100" ]]

with the limit being the maximum number of pages you wish to list.

A sitemap can be a very useful tool for your wikispace users. As your wikispace grows with more and more pages being added, pages can be lost with the flood of information being added. Creating a sitemap with page includes in your wikispace will display a list of pages sorted alphabetically. This will make it easy for your users to quickly find the page that they might be looking for in your wikispace.
