Directions for the Tulips Handmade Valentine’s Cards:

• Print the Wikki Stix Tulip card template to heavy paper.
• To create the Wikki Stix tulips: make an outline of a tulip bulb with any color(s) of Wikki Stix desired on the printed card template, and then fill-in the tulip outline with additional Wikki Stix. Note: younger crafters may wish to create a “W” shape with one Wikki Stix, and then use an additional Wikki Stix to create the rest of the tulip (attach one end of the Wikki Stix to the W – top left, and then make a semi-circle shape before attaching the last end of the Wikki Stix to the W – top right). • To create a stem for the tulips, two green Wikki Stix strands can be twisted together or one Wikki Stix can be used. The leaves can be created from green Wikki Stix oval shapes.

Directions for the Sun and Moon Handmade Valentine’s Day Cards:

• Print the Wikki Stix Sun and Moon card template to heavy paper.
• Create a sun and a moon with Wikki Stix for your Valentine’s Day cards.
• Kids or adults can create the sun however desired. Some may wish to create an all yellow sun from a simple circle, while others may wish to use additional colors or shapes to resemble the sun.
• The moon can be created with black and white Wikki Stix. Use black Wikki Stix to create a black spiral or pinwheel shape. By adding additional Wikki Stix, the spiral shape can be made larger as desired. Use white Wikki Stix to create any phase of the moon desired. The white shape can be pressed on top of the black spiral moon with firm fingertip pressure.

The Wikki Stix handmade Valentine’s Day cards can be stored until Valentine’s Day by placing sheets of parchment paper between the cards. The cards should be stored flat in a box and kept in an area that is dry.

Ninja, Bee, Apple, and Heart-Themed Printable Valentine’s Day Cards for Kids to Create

Prior to creating the fine motor snowman crafts, assemble the simple materials below and set them out on a table or a large tray. Kids are naturally curious about materials and will be drawn to explore the materials and create with them.

Materials needed for each snowman craft:

• Any white paper (construction paper, copy paper, etc.) Fold the paper into squares (or small rectangles) and cut apart. One sheet of standard paper will make four-six snowmen “faces” for the fine motor snowmen crafts.
• Black, White, Orange, Red, and Green Wikki Stix
• Scissors

Directions for creating the snowmen crafts:

• Each child should take one of the white paper pieces and accordion fold the paper. Lay the paper flat on a table, fold a section upward and crease the paper, and then flip the paper to make a fold down and crease the fold. Kids should continue accordion folding until the entire paper is done. When finished folding, kids can round the ends of the accordion fold with scissors, if desired. The accordion folded paper will become the snowman’s face. Note: learning to make accordion folds is awesome fine motor practice for kids. Use scrap pieces of paper prior to making the snowmen crafts so kids get the hang of how to make an accordion fold.
• Kids can use black Wikki Stix to create the snowman’s top hat. The band for the top hat is created with white Wikki Stix, green Wikki Stix is used for the holly leaves, and red Wikki Stix is used to make the holly berries. There is no wrong or right way to create the hat. Kids can look at the snowman craft photo if they’d like a visual picture to guide as they create the crafts. Other colors of Wikki Stix can be use to make the band for the hat or kids might wish to create a flower for their snowman’s hat instead of the holly leaves and berries. Wikki Stix will be used differently by kids of various ages and abilities; each snowman craft will be unique to the child creating.
• The snowman’s facial features are created with black, white, and orange Wikki Stix. The eyes for the snowman can be created with small cut pieces of black and white Wikki Stix. Form the pieces into balls or small spirals and attach to the snowman’s paper face with firm fingertip pressure. The snowman’s carrot nose is created by making an orange Wikki Stix triangle. Kids can use small cut black pieces of Wikki Stix, formed into balls, to resemble a “mouth made out of coal” for the snowman craft.
• If desired, kids can create a hanger out of Wikki Stix to display their snowman craft. Fold a Wikki Stix into a tear drop shape and press the ends firmly together. Attach the hanger to the back of the snowman craft using firm fingertip pressure.

Prior to creating the candy stripe pumpkin cut-out crafts, set out the supplies below on a table or a large tray to invite kids to create. Kids are drawn to colorful supplies and will be interested in creating when everything is assembled in one central place.

Materials needed for the Candy Stripe Pumpkin Crafts:

• Any colors of Wikki Stix
• Two pieces of heavy paper – any color you have on hand is fine
• Scissors (to make the pumpkin cut-out)

Directions to create the Candy Stripe Pumpkins:

1.  On one piece of paper, kids should lay assorted colors of Wikki Stix across the paper vertically. Kids can make color patterns with Wikki Stix, or just alternate colors randomly for a real candy stripe pattern.

1. With the second sheet of paper, cut out a pumpkin shape. Fold the paper in half, then starting on the fold, cut any shape of pumpkin desired. Kids can then use the paper pumpkin frame and lay it directly on top of the Wikki Stix. No glue is necessary as the paper frame will adhere to the Wikki Stix with just firm fingertip pressure. If desired, kids can use paper cut-outs to create facial features for a Jack-O-Lantern on their candy stripe pumpkins. The paper features can be pressed directly on top of the Wikki Stix as it’s tacky and will hold the features in place.

When finished, kids can display their colorful Wikki Stix Candy Stripe Pumpkin Crafts all month long. The crafts keep well for next year’s decorations when placed between two pieces of parchment paper and stored flat. Creating and playing with Wikki Stix is fun for kids. Prior to math games, print the Pirate Hat Toppers linked above and use a permanent marker to label each topper with any numbers your own kids are working on. Create an invitation to play by assembling the Pirate Hat Toppers, assorted pony beads, and Wikki Stix on a tray or a large table. Kids are curious about supplies and will be drawn to create and play when supplies are readily available.

5 Ways to Play with the Wikki Stix Talk Like a Pirate Day Counting Sticks:

1). One-to-One Correspondence – kids can attach one of the labeled Pirate Hats to the top of a Wikki Stix with firm fingertip pressure. Ask the children to place the corresponding number of pony beads on the counting stick. Example: the counting stick label with the numeral 1, gets 1 pony bead. Pony beads fit easily on Wikki Stix and encourage fine motor skills, too. As kids gain confidence, introduce number words by writing the number word on the Pirate Hat Toppers.

2). Number Order – invite kids to attach numbered Pirate Hat Toppers (labeled 1-10) to the top of 10 Wikki Stix. Kids can then work to sort the numbered Pirate Hats into correct number order.

Variation: have the kids sort the counting sticks into correct number order starting with a number OTHER than number 1.

3). Skip Counting – kids can practice skip counting skills with the counting sticks. Example – for skip counting by 2’s, label the Pirate Hat Toppers with numbers 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, etc. Kids can then work to place the correct number of pony beads on each of the counting sticks.

4). Ten Bars – Wikki Stix counting sticks make great “10 bars.” Invite kids to place 10 pony beads onto 10 of the Wikki Stix Pirate Hat Counting Sticks. Place the created 10 bars side-by-side to visualize any set of 10.

5). Patterning – write any basic pattern on the Pirate Hat Toppers (for example: write AB on one of the Pirate Hat Toppers). Kids must then choose two color to alternate on their Wikki Stix Pirate Hat Counting Sticks. Note: the first color of pony bead is the “A” bead; the second color of pony bead is the “B” bead. Kids should keep alternating colors of beads to create the AB pattern on the Pirate Hat Counting Sticks. As kids gain confidence, encourage more complex patterns: ABC, ABCD, AABB, AABBCC, AABBCCDD, etc.

HINT: After printing the Pirate Hat Toppers, laminate for durability, and then use a dry erase marker for labeling the various game suggestions above.
