PMW clarification: Gingrich, the PA and PMW

The Palestinian Authority said last week to the British daily The Guardian that US presidential candidate Newt Gingrich's critique of the PA was based on information he quoted from Palestinian Media Watch's website.

To clarify PMW findings, and what was correct and incorrect in Gingrich's remarks, PMW wrote an op-ed that was published in The Jerusalem Post, December16, 2011 :
The American congressional candidates were correct in criticizing the PA for promoting terror

US presidential candidate and the former speaker of US House of Representatives Newt Gingrich said this week that the Palestinian Authority does not recognize Israel's right to exist and that Palestinian schoolbooks teach children to become terrorists. Gingrich cited what he said were PA sources to back up his remarks.

However, the PA has rejected his statements as "groundless."

According to the British daily The Guardian: "Palestinian officials said Gingrich's allegations were based substantially on material produced by an Israeli organization, Palestinian Media Watch, which has published a long list of entries on its website (palwatch.org) under the heading 'Promoting Violence for Children.' An article [on PMW's website] from 2007 describes Palestinian textbooks paid for with US aid money that deny Israel's right to exist.

"But Xavier Abu Eid, a senior adviser to the Palestine Liberation Organization, said the website and Gingrich's allegations were groundless." (December 11, 2011)

Certainly the PA's rejection of the US candidate was expected, as his charges contradict what the PA has been telling Western countries for years.

This is not merely an irrelevant distraction and rhetoric of a presidential campaign. It is these issues - PA non-recognition of Israel and its support of terror - that are at the heart of the peace process and constitute a major impediment to its success. Therefore, it is critical to determine who is correct - Gingrich or the PA.

What exactly was said about the PA?

During the ABC News Republican presidential candidates' debate (December 10, 2011), Gingrich said that the PA does not recognize Israel's right to exist. He said that "the Palestinian Authority ambassador to India said last month, 'There is no difference between Fatah and Hamas. We both agree Israel has no right to exist." This quote, taken from a PMW bulletin, is precise and is very significant, elaborating one of the most important and yet relatively unnoticed principles of PA ideology.

The PA Ambassador to India, Adli Sadeq, wrote in the official PA daily: "They [Israelis] have a common mistake or misconception by which they fool themselves, assuming that Fatah accepts them and recognizes the right of their state to exist, and that it is Hamas alone that loathes them and does not recognize the right of this state to exist. They ignore the fact that this state, based on a fabricated [Zionist] enterprise, never had any shred of a right to exist." (Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, November 26, 2011)

The point of the PA ambassador was the following: The PA differentiates between recognizing that Israel in fact exists - and its unwavering denial of Israel's legitimacy, that is, Israel's right to exist. The PA educates its children with this dual message that Israel exists but has no right to exist, as expressed in a PA schoolbook for grade 12: "Palestine's war ended with a catastrophe that is unprecedented in history, when the Zionist gangs stole Palestine and established the State of Israel." (Arabic Language, Analysis, Literature and Criticism, grade 12, p. 104)

Defining Israel as being created after "Zionist gangs stole Palestine" is the definitive expression of denying Israel's right to exist. Significantly, this rejection of Israel is not just found in Palestinian schoolbooks but is a central part of the ongoing Palestinian discourse.

When a fire raged in northern Israel last year and the PA sent a team of firefighters to join international forces trying to put it out, it was justified by a regular columnist in the official PA daily as follows: "Even if an aggressive foreigner occupies our home and steals it, we don't wish for the home to burn." (Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, December 5, 2010)

Even the official PA daily, when reporting on sporting events, uses political language that tells its readers that it rejects the legitimacy of Israel. The official PA daily reported on a ceremony honoring an Israeli Arab soccer team and its success in moving up to Israel's top division Premier League. Yet when the story was reported in the PA daily it was described as "the team's rise to the national league in the homeland occupied in 1948." (Al- Hayat Al-Jadida, June 18, 2010)

It did not report that it was the "national league in Israel."

In the article in the official PA daily that Gingrich quoted, the PA ambassador to India explained this central duality of the PA ideology, whereby they recognize Israel's existence as a fact of history, but reject Israel's right to exist, as does Hamas.

In a different part of the article the PA ambassador explained this explicitly: "There are no two Palestinians who disagree over the fact that Israel exists, and recognition of it is restating the obvious. But recognition of its right to exist is something else, different from recognition of its [physical] existence." (Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, November 26, 2011) Clearly, Gingrich was correct.

Similarly, PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas himself has promoted this dual message. In his speech at the UN asking for recognition of Palestine as an independent state, Abbas stated to the international community: "Let us build the bridges of dialogue instead of checkpoints and walls of separation, and build cooperative relations based on parity and equity between two neighboring states - Palestine and Israel." (Speech at the UN, September 23, 2011)

However, on the very next day, Abbas's own government- controlled PA TV as part of its UN statehood campaign broadcast a map that included PA areas as well as all of Israel, wrapped in the Palestinian flag, symbolizing Palestinian political sovereignty over all of Israel. This visual statement was another blatant denial of Israel's legitimacy.

Newt Gingrich's second critique of the PA, which presidential candidate Rep. Michele Bachmann likewise mentioned in the ABC debate, was of the PA schoolbooks which he said teach children to be terrorists. Gingrich said: "These people are terrorists. They teach terrorism in their schools. They have textbooks that say, 'If there are 13 Jews and nine Jews are killed, how many Jews are left? We pay for those textbooks through our aid money."

Here, Gingrich was correct in principle but his example was not. The PA schoolbooks do not include that particular math question. Instead the PA Ministry of Education does something far worse: It glorifies murderers and terrorists. The PA Ministry of Education has two of its schools named after Dalal Mughrabi (Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, January 23, 2006), the woman who led the most lethal terror attack in Israel's history, the Coastal Road massacre bus hijacking in which 37 civilians were killed.

What exactly is the PA message to its children regarding terror? When the Ministry of Education makes children study in a school that venerates a terrorist who killed 37 civilians, its message is very clear: terror and killing Israelis is not only justified but is even worthy of honor.

Fatah has a women's club at Palestinian universities called Sisters of Dalal, honoring the same terrorist Mughrabi. Two summer camps for children this past summer had groups named after her, and one of the camps was sponsored by Prime Minister Salam Fayyad. The entire environment the PA has created for its children envelopes them in glorification of terror.

The PA, it seems, learned that the world would no longer permit it to directly call to kill Israelis, for to do so would cause it to lose American and European funding. So instead of promoting the terror, it glorifies the terrorists; instead of Palestinian children learning that they must kill Israelis, they learn that whoever kills Israelis will become a Palestinian hero.

When the American congressional candidates criticized the PA for promoting terror among Palestinians they were absolutely correct. When they accused the PA of denying Israel's right to exist they were merely exposing authentic PA ideology.

The time is approaching for the PA to make some hard choices. Is it going to change and take the path of peace or is it going to continue on the path of deception?

Ruben Ologeanu: Dr. Darrel Bock cum puteţi aborda o persoană sceptică în ceea ce priveşte veridicitatea documentelor Noului Testament?

Darrel Bock: Ei bine, veridicitatea textelor, în sensul înţelegerii faptului că textul care a fost scris, este textul pe care îl avem astăzi, este să putem să vorbim prin intermediul evidenţelor din manuscrisele pe care le avem. Avem atâtea manuscrise ale Scripturii, care arată ce înseamnă cuvintele din cadrul lor, încât sunt foarte sigure în ceea ce priveşte conţinutul lor, asta a fost ceea ce s-a scris. Însă veridicitatea nu se referă doar la a şti că ceea ce s-a scris atunci este ceea ce avem noi astăzi, şi asta pentru că veridicitatea are de a face şi cu conţinutul, ceea ce se află în documente. Aceasta este o discuţie total diferită şi cel mai bun mod de a o avea este să arăţi în ce fel ceea ce a spus şi a făcut Isus se relaţionează contextului în care a trăit în primul secol. În unele cazuri poţi vorbi despre (cel puţin în termenii existenţei) documente care au fost scrise de către istorici necreştini ce fac referire la Isus Hristos. Aceştia au afirmat că a existat, că a fost crucificat în timpul lui Pilat, că a fost crucificat pentru că liderii evrei au lucrat cu Pilat în scopul acelei crucificări. Josephus, un istoric evreu din primul secol, este unul dintre cei care afirmă astfel lucruri. Creştinismul şi mişcarea creştină au venit din timpul şi lucrarea lui.

Cel puţin, astfel de aspecte pot fi dovedite fără ca măcar să deschizi cărţile Bibliei, şi acesta formează cadrul pentru restul discuţiei. Mare parte a problemelor pe care oamenii le au cu privire la veridicitatea Scripturii trebuie să aibă de a face cu întrebarea dacă Dumnezeu poate face sau nu miracole. Acesta e un lucru care nu poate fi dovedit. Nu pot lua un reportofon sau o cameră de luat vederi, să mă duc înapoi în acele timpuri antice şi să caut acel material care să dovedească asta. Opera sa, Antichităţi iudaice, volumul 18.63 şi 64, conţine un paragraf scurt care descrie cine este Isus. Istoricii recunosc că în urma analizei modului de exprimare din manuscrisele pe care le avem, nu tot ce scrie datează din timpul lui Josephus, întrucât textul spune că El era Mesia, ori Josephus nu credea în Isus. Totuşi, sunt anumite lucruri pe care acesta le-a spus şi despre care mulţi cărturari sunt convinşi că Josephus le-a scris, şi anume că Isus a făcut lucruri neobişnuite, că a fost crucificat sub domnia lui Pilat prin instigarea unor anumiţi lideri evrei, iar creştinismul şi mişcarea creştină au apărut în timpul slujirii sale. De asemenea, alţi doi istorici evrei, de la începutul celui de-al doilea secol, fac referire la Isus, la viaţa şi slujirea Sa. Unul dintre aceştia menţionează execuţia din timpul lui Pilat.

Aşadar, dacă nu am fi avut Biblia, tot am fi ştiut că Isus ar fi existat ca şi personaj istoric, însă poate nu am fi ştiut prea mult despre învăţăturile Sale.

Ruben O: A fost Isus un reformator teologic al timpului Său?

Darrel B: Cred că mai corect ar fi să spunem că a fost un reformator teologic în sensul că a aranjat lucrurile din Vechiul Testament într-un mod în care oamenii nu l-au făcut până atunci şi a arătat cum anumite lucruri s-au concretizat în lucrarea pe care El a avut-o de făcut. Printre iudei existau diverse păreri şi aşteptări despre cum va fi vremea sfârşitului, cum va fi Salvarea, cum va arăta Mesia, şi, în cele mai multe cazuri , acestea se încadrau în mai multe imagini diferite. Avem imaginea robului suferind, cel care suferă din cauza oamenilor, avem imaginea unui Mesia care este un lider puternic, avem un Mesia care este Fiul Omului, o figură transcedentală ce apare la sfârşit ca să aducă eliberare. În Iudea exista probabil tendinţa ca aceste profile să fie concepute diferit, nu puteau fi asociate. Însă Isus Hristos este cel care a pus toate acestea împreună, într-o singură persoană, în El Însuşi. Iată o inovaţie în gândirea iudaică, deoarece ei obişnuiau să ţină aceste categorii separat. Un al doilea sens prin care Isus a fost considerat, într-un fel, un refomator teologic, a fost că a accentuat adevăratul scop al legii. El scoate în evidenţă faptul că nu este de-ajuns doar să luăm în considerare ce spune legea, „Să nu ucizi”, ci trebuie să descoperim şi ce conduce la crimă, şi anume, MÂNIA. Astfel, El aprofundează principiile legii, pentru a descoperi motivaţia interioară, fără a spune doar: „Oare am încălcat, sau nu, legea?” Printr-o astfel de abordare El caută o neprihănire care era mai măreaţă decât o citire superficială a legii. Asta a fost o altă reformă majoră pe care El a făcut-o.Ruben O.: O altă întrebare ar fi legată de cărturarul şi istoricul Bart Ehrman, bine cunoscut printre criticii contemporani ai Noului Testament, are el dreptate când spune că textele Noului Testament au fost redactate cu mult timp după ce evenimentele au avut loc?

Darrel B: Poate să aibă dreptate, dar în sensul distanţei. Eu tind să datez textele manuscriselor Noului Testament cu vreo 15-20 de ani mai devreme decât o face el, mai ales Evangheliile. Tind să datez, cel puțin trei dintre Evanghelii: Matei, Marcu şi Luca, înainte de anul 60 AD, iar Evanghelia după Ioan, în anul 90 AD.

Cred că el datează Evanghelia după Matei şi cea după Luca puţin mai târziu, aproximativ prin anii 80 – 90 AD, iar Evanghelia după Marcu la sfârşitul anului 60-începutul anului 70, pe când eu aş spune că a fost realizat cu 10 ani înainte. Dar, să presupunem că are dreptate, că aceasta a fost scrisă mai târziu, dată în sine la care a fost scrisă Evanghelia nu afectează cu nimic veridicitatea materialului scris. Ceea ce determină veridicitatea materialului este calitatea tradiţiei care a fost înregistrată în el, iar asta nu are de a face cu data la care a fost scris. Astfel, dacă o scriere a fost realizată mai târziu, acest lucru nu diminuează neapărat veridicitatea acesteia. Asta e o greşeală pe care unii oameni o fac atunci când se gândesc că, dacă un text este scris mai târziu, atunci timpul va schimba mesajul sau va altera textul original, sau pot apărea născociri pe parcurs. Există oameni care cred că Noul Testament conţine şi povestiri inventate, însă eu nu cred asta. De fapt, calitatea tradiţiei este destul de bună, există o conexiune a tradiţiei apostolice care se potriveşte contextului. Acest lucru vorbeşte despre calitatea materialului nu despre data la care Evangheliile au fost scrise. Motivul pentru care Evangheliile au fost scrise atât de târziu este pentru că, atâta timp cât a răsunat vocea oamenilor care l-au văzut pe Isus, acest lucru a avut mai mult impact decât să se fi scris pe o bucată de hârtie. În lumea antică, vocea orală, vocea vie a unui martor, era mult mai preţuită decât o mărturie scrisă. Acest lucru este neobişnuit pentru perioada noastră. Astfel, în momentul în care apostolii au început să moară, au scris pe papirusuri ceea ce credeau şi îi învăţau pe alţii. Prin urmare, Marcu este asociat în mod tradiţional cu Petru, Luca este în mod tradiţional asociat cu Pavel, apoi îi avem pe Matei şi Ioan, care au rădăcini apostolice.

Ruben O: Citând un autor binecunoscut care a făcut vâlvă acum câțiva ani, vreau să vă întreb dacă istoria este scrisă de către învingători?

Darrel B: Istoria este adesea scrisă de cei învingători în sensul că, atunci când cineva câştigă o confruntare istorică antică, documentele şi reproducerea istorică a acestuia sunt cele care rămân înregistrate. Una dintre problemele pe care le avem cu istoria antică este că deţinem doar părţi ale materialului în care s-au consemnat evenimentele care au avut loc la timpul respectiv, multe dintre ele fiind pierdute. În unele cazuri, documentele altora au fost omise în a fi luate în considerare, pentru că cele învingătoare le-au înlăturat.

Cauza pentru care această expresie este populară în discuţiile teologice este aceea că, uneori, se afirmă faptul că motivul pentru care avem aceeaşi expunere a istoriei antice ca şi cea a bisericii este acela potrivit căruia înregistrările învingătorilor teologici au fost păstrate, în timp ce vocile celor care au vorbit şi care au avut o teologie puţin diferită au fost pierdute. Există o fărâmă de adevăr în această afirmaţie. Atunci când biserica a ajuns să-şi adopte doctrina , deseori a cerut ca scrierile oponenţilor să fie arse şi să sfârşească cu acele lucruri. Darrel B: Valoarea Evangheliilor apocrife nu stă în faptul că ele sunt adevărate din punct de vedere teologic sau că sunt precise, ci stă în faptul că ele ne oferă o fereastră spre ceea ce unii oameni care foloseau simbolismul creştin, în special în secolul doi şi trei, credeau despre Isus şi modul în care convingerile lor erau diferite de ceea ce am ajuns să vedem în biserică. Este folositor să poţi auzi întreaga conversaţie dintr-o perspectivă istorică, şi chiar teologică, pentru că nu auzi doar vocea celor care critică aceste lucrări , ci ajungi să cunoşti propriu-zis aceste lucrări şi modul în care construiesc argumentarea pentru ceea ce prezintă şi cred. Acest lucru este util pentru a aprecia istoria bisericii şi cum s-a dezvoltat aceasta.

Ruben O: Într-un fel, ele ne ajută să vedem imaginea în ansamblu a acelei perioade.

Darrel B: Exact!

Ruben O: O ultimă întrebare. Personală de data aceasta: care sunt celelalte proiecte în care sunteţi implicat?

Darrel B: Momentan lucrez la o carte binecunoscută despre istoricitatea lui Isus, care rezumă în 200 de pagini un proiect de 800 de pagini a mai multor cărturari cărora le-a luat cam un deceniu să îl termine. Partea tehnică a fost publicată în Germania, sub formă de serie, iar acum este publicată şi în S.U.A. Versiunea aceasta nouă va fi şi ea publicată în America, aşa că lucrez la ea. Lucrez la o teologie biblică a Faptelor Apostolilor scrisă de Luca. Tocmai am terminat nişte însemnări pentru un studiu biblic tot pentru Faptele Apostolilor şi o carte scurtă despre dragoste şi creştinismul timpuriu pentru o editură. Aşadar, acestea sunt proiectele la care lucrez.

Ce-ar fi dacă n-am muri? [ Science ]

Este posibil ca omul – fiecare om – să trăiască veşnic? Unii cred că da, şi chiar o doresc; alţii se tem că ar fi posibil; unii speră că nu, iar alţii sunt convinşi că nu se poate. Adevărul este că o trecere a omului de la starea de făptură muritoare la cea de fiinţă nemuritoare ar fi cea mai profundă, cea mai drastică schimbare petrecută vreodată în istoria speciei umane. De la dreptul de moştenire şi până la sistemul de pensii şi de asigurări de viaţă, întreg eşafodajul civilizaţiei moderne se sprijină pe realitatea că oamenii mai şi mor, după ce au trăit o vreme… Şi, oricât de ademenitoare le pare unora perspectiva nemuririi individuale, problemele pe care le ridică această colosală transformare sunt de de natură să-i facă pe cei cât de cât înclinaţi spre reflecţie să se întrebe: oare chiar e de dorit să devenim nemuritori?

Confruntaţi, timp de milenii, cu realitatea unei vieţi scurte - scurtată de boli şi de războaie - oamenii au visat mereu să trăiască mai mult, uneori ducând la extrem această aspiraţie, spre dorinţa de a trăi veşnic. Stau mărturie multele legende şi scrieri despre fiinţe umane dornice să afle viaţa fără de moarte, elixirul tinereţii, secretul vieţii veşnice…
Religiile au venit în întâmpinarea acestei aspiraţii fundamentale prin ideea consolatoare a nemuririi sufletului şi a unei vieţi de apoi, de după moarte, într-o lume de dincolo de marele prag, o lumea în care viaţa eternă era posibilă.

Dar oamenii au continuat să aspire la nemurirea fizică individuală. Şi, după atâtea secole în care au putut doar visa la ea, iată că a venit vremea în care se vorbeşte despre nemurire în alţi termeni: ca despre ceva care, în scurt timp - câteva decenii - ar putea fi posibil.
Dincolo de consideraţiile filozofice sau de speculaţiile ezoterice, ar fi interesant de ştiut ce gândesc despre acest subiect oamenii de ştiinţă, obişnuiţi, în general, să privească lucrurile prin prisma unui pozitivism mai degrabă sceptic.

Cine crede în nemurire?

Ar fi nepotrivit să discutăm despre nemurire fără a aminti numele lui Raymond Kurzweil, specialist în inteligenţă artificială, inventator, vizionar, promotor al conceptului de singularitate, al transumanismului şi al ideeii că, beneficiind de progresele tehnologiei şi ale ştiinţei, individul uman îşi poate extinde durata vieţii până la a deveni, practic, nemuritor.

Singularitatea tehnologică este un concept care se referă la posibilitatea apariţiei, în viitor, a unei inteligenţe supraumane, graţie mijloacelor tehnologice. Apariţia singularităţii tehnologice reprezintă un orizont de aşteptare, dincolo de care este dificil de înţeles şi prezis ce s-ar întâmpla, de vreme ce capacităţile unei inteligenţe supraumane nu prea pot fi înţelese de o minte înzestrată cu inteligenţă umană obişnuită. Odată atinsă singularitatea, ar urma o explozie a inteligenţei - un fenomen prin care superinteligenţele apărute ar crea, generaţie după generaţie, fiinţe capabile de performanţe din ce în ce mai mari ale minţii. Iar aceste minţi uluitoare ar putea născoci, într-un ritm din ce în ce mai alert, mijloace de păstrare a sănătăţii, de prevenire a îmbătrânirii, de prelungire a vieţii şi de creştere a performanţelor care ar face, practic, tranziţia de la organismul uman la corpul postuman. Acesta estetransumanismul - o viziune a unei transformări fără precedent a fiinţei umane, prin trecerea ei la un nivel considerat mult superior, reprezentat de o creatură cu capacităţi fizice şi cognitive enorm crescute faţă de cele ale omului de azi.

Iar beneficiind de ritmul tot mai rapid al progresului tehnologic, această nouă versiune de Homo sapiens ar putea foarte bine să trăiască veşnic, stăpânind mecanismele care controlează procesul de îmbătrânire, reparând pe ici-pe colo ceea ce e de reparat, la nevoie înlocuind chiar porţiuni din organismul biologic cu sisteme artificiale eficiente şi fiabile. Iar celor care gândesc că astfel vom deveni practic nişte cyborgi, li s-ar putea răspunde că cyborgii sunt deja printre noi: în sensul sugerat mai sus (fiinţe umane reparate pe alocuri cu piese artificiale), şi cei cu regulator de ritm cardiac implantat sau cu proteză de şold sunt cyborgi.

Aubrey de Grey este un om de ştiinţă britanic, specializat în gerontologie şi interesat în mod special de studiul mijloacelor prin care procesul îmbătrânirii ar putea fi oprit, cu posibilitatea prelungirii considerabile a vieţii. Este un domeniu vizionar şi plin de promisiuni al medicinii regenerative, ramură care studiază procesele de înlocuire sau regenerare a celulelor, ţesuturilor sau organelor umane, în scopul de a le face să funcţioneze normal. După Aubrey de Grey, îmbătrânirea este determinată de un cumul de efecte ale metabolismului, iar scopul studiilor sale este împiedicarea declinului fizic şi cognitiv al fiinţei umane şi menţinerea unei stări de tinereţe biologică perpetuă, indiferent de vârsta cronologică.

Judecând după exemplele de mai sus, savanţii par mai curând incitaţi de provocarea pe care o reprezintă, din punct de vedere ştiinţific (medical, tehnologic) evitarea declinului adus de vârstă şi atingerea imortalităţii. Poate că, într-adevăr, este (sau, mai curând, ar fi) o izbândă intelectuală colosală să reuşeşti să schimbi mersul firesc al lucrurilor, să împiedici ceea ce părea inevitabil, să opreşti, practic, timpul în loc şi, odată cu el, ravagiile asupra fiinţei umane de-a lungul vieţii ei; să fii cel care face să dăinuie tinereţea, în loc de a fi cel care suportă, neputincios, degradarea şi alunecarea spre moarte.

Dar, dincolo de izbânda ştiinţifică, se află nişte întrebări pe cât de prozaice, pe atât de importante. Iată o asemenea întrebare, pe care n-o putem trece cu vederea, oricât le-ar displăcea unora să coboare din înaltele sfere ale cunoaşterii în grosolana materialitate a vieţii de zi cu zi: ce am mânca toţi, dacă am fi nemuritori?

Cele 7 miliarde de oameni care populează azi planeta au deja probleme în acest sens: suntem mulţi şi resursele Pământului, aşa cum sunt ele astăzi, nu ajung. Sporul populaţional e încă ridicat şi ne aşteptăm să fim 9 miliarde peste doar vreo patru decenii. Ce-o să mâncăm cu toţii, în condiţiile în care, chiar şi acum, hrana nu ajunge pentru toată populaţia planetei?

Organizaţia Naţiunilor Unite estima, într-un raport care analiza starea lumii în anul 2010 şi îşi arunca privirea spre viitor, că în 2015, cca. 920 de milioane de persoane tot vor trăi sub limita sărăciei - cu mai puţin de 1,25 USD pe zi (azi sunt 1,4 miliarde). Şi tot ONU prevede că, în anul 2050, cererea de produse alimentare va fi cu 75% mai mare decât astăzi - şi asta în condiţiile în care nu trăim şi nu mâncăm de-a pururi.

A fi sau a nu fi nemuritor?

Dar, în fine, nemurirea chiar ar fi un lucru bun pentru om, ca specie? La nivel individual, unii şi-ar dori poate să trăiască veşnic, dar atâta vreme cât stăm cu toţii aici, pe Pământ, nimeni nu se poate sustrage la infinit destinului speciei sale.

Un biolog, specialist în evoluţionism, Andre Martins, de la Universitatea din Sao Paulo, Brazilia, a realizat recent o simulare computerizată a evoluţiei a două populaţii ipotetice - una de oameni obişnuiţi, muritori, şi o alta de făpturi umane nemuritoare.
Iar rezultatele sugerează că, pur şi simplu, îmbătrânirea şi moartea ne-au ajutat - şi cu siguranţă ne ajută în continuare - să evoluăm ca specie. În anumite circumstanţe, mortalitatea este efectiv un avantaj pentru supravieţuirea speciei umane.

În simularea lui Martins, paradoxal, specia muritoare a împins-o pe cea nemuritoare spre extincţie.
Rezultatul se datorează adaptării care are loc prin selecţie, de-a lungul generaţiilor succesive. Schimbările/mutaţiile fac ca fiecare generaţie să fie un pic mai bine adaptată decât cea actuală şi, pe termen lung, să o elimine pe cea ai cărei indivizi nemuritori rămân înţepeniţi în aceleaşi tipare fiziologice şi comportamentale. În lumea naturală, dominată de hazard şi schimbări şi, în consecinţă, de necesitatea adaptării permanente, o specie care evoluează întruna - chiar dacă lent - are un avantaj competitiv.

Criticii acestui experiment susţin că lumea în care trăieşte azi o mare parte a populaţiei Terrei nu mai are caracteristicile mediului natural, că factori precum schimbările tehnologice rapide şi acumularea masivă a informaţiilor necesită un alt tip de adaptare decât cea la mediul natural.

Posibil. Dar, dacă prelungirea duratei vieţii active (nu a vieţii pur şi simplu) prin progres ştiinţific şi tehnologic şi prin aplicarea lui într-un sistem medical mai bun, eliminarea sărăciei şi a foametei şi domolirea violenţei care încă scurtează nenumărate vieţi sunt scopuri raţionale şi demne de urmărit în virtutea consecinţelor lor pentru lumea de mâine, rămâne încă neclar în ce măsură atingerea nemuririi personale ar rezolva marile probleme ale civilizaţiei umane.

Pentru inceput va rugam sa ne spuneti cat mai multe despre voi. ce vreti voi sa afle si lumea…

GrupContinental:Grupul Continental a luat nastere in Romania in anul 1998, de atunci aproximativ 700 de tineri si copii au fost implicati in cele peste 40 de turnee pe care le-am organizat. In 2009 am avut deja 6 turnee si ne mai stau in fata inca doua. Proiectele noastre sunt pentru oricine are inima si putin talent musical.

Cum şi când a avut loc înfiinţarea grupului?

GrupContinental: In anii ’60, Cam Floria, un tanar american, a avut viziunea si dorinta de a infiinta un grup care sa strabata America si sa duca Vestea Buna a Evangheliei prin cantec, oricarui om care vrea sa asculte. Dupa un an, Leen LaReviere, un alt tanar olandez, uimit de impactul acestui grup, a decis sa lupte pentru infiintarea unei organizatii in Europa, care sa dezvolte aceeasi strategie a raspandirii Evangheliei. De atunci, numai in Europa s-au infiintat cateva organizatii Continental (Olanda, Italia, Slovacia, Ungaria, Romania), care au ca scop evanghelizarea spatiului in care se vorbeste limba lor.

Cine compune cantarile pe care le cantati?

GrupContinental: Piesele sunt compuse de Continental dar si de marii artisti crestini, cumparate cu toate drepturile si adaptate genului muzical pe care il abordam. As aminti faptul ca in Continentalul timpuriu din Statele Unite au activat si s-au format nume consacrete ale muzicii crestine contemporane ca: Michael W. Smith, Sandy Patty, Waine Watson, Steven Curtis Chapman si multi altii, care azi furnizeaza piese de calitate grupurilor Continental din intreaga lume.

Ce muzica va place sa ascultati. De ce? Aveti o trupa/artist preferat/melodie preferata?

GrupContinental: Un raspuns la o astfel de intrebare ar fi foarte subiectiv in cazul nostru, avand in vedere numarul mare de colaboratori pe care ii avem in fiecare an.

Daca ati putea sa alegeti o colaborare cu orice artist, care ar fi acela?

GrupContinental: Deja am colaborat cu multi artisti sau formatii crestine din Romania, lucru care ne bucura mult. Ascultand albumele noastre veti auzi voci ca si ale lui Catalin si Ramona Lup, Marius Falcusan si Dia Lup din formatia Laud, Shema, Marius Moldoveanu din Shalom etc.

Ce hobby-uri aveti, in afara de muzica?

GrupContinental: Multe si diverse. Ce cred ca avem totusi in comun este bucuria de a calatori.

Ce parere aveti despre situatia actuala a muzicii crestine din Romania?

GrupContinental: Incet, incet, caliatetea muzicala creste si asta e un lucru bun. Avem insa probleme la capitolele text si atitudine. Adica ne-am dori mai mult ca inchinarea sa fie si inteleapta si adevarata. Muzica crestina nu este cea care foloseste un text crestin, ci a carei desfasurare genereaza un act de inchinare in Duh si Adevar, dar si raspunde nevoilor de inchinare ale congregatiei, nu starneste doar emotii. Prin aceasta afirmatie nu desconsideram pe nimeni. Ne lovim de aceleasi probleme pe care incercam sa le reparam si sa dezvoltam adevaratele calitati ale inchinarii.

Ce a decurs turneele din aceasta vara din Oltenia si Ucraina?

GrupContinental: Anul acestea, am avut doua turnee in acelasi timp. Ne-am intalnit 50 de tineri, am studiat impreuna timp de o saptamana 8-10 ore zilnic iar apoi ne-am despartit ca sa acoperim cele doua zone in care lucram de ceva timp. Experientele au fost multe si frumoase, intamplari neprevazute la tot pasul, dar nimic nu se compara cu ceea ce a lucrat Domnul in vietile noastre in acest timp pe care am vrut sa-l folosim intr-un mod util. Am vazut oameni transformati, tineri plangand, atinsi fiind de Cuvantul lui Dumnezeu. Asta ne da imboldul sa mergem mai departe.

Cineva a spus: " Un pesimist vede tunelul; un optimist vede lumina de la capatul tunelului; dar un realist vede tunelul, lumina de la capatul tunelului si tunelul urmator ". Scriitorul cartii Eclesiastul a fost un realist care a vrut ca si noi sa vedem viata asa cum este ea in realitate si s-o traim conform intelepciunii divine.

J.I.Packer, spune ca baza reala a intelepciunii este in primul rand, recunoasterea faptului ca o mare parte din ceea ce se intampla in lume este lipsit de sens. Atunci cand ne dam ochelarii care ne fac sa vedem totul in roz, vedem lipsa de finalitate, moartea care secera totul, raul care infloreste - pe scurt, pare ca si cum Dumnezeu ar fi pierdut controlul.

De indata ce ne oprim si punem intrebari cu privire la caile lui Dumnezeu, spune Packer, suntem gata sa invatam intelepciunea Lui, care inseamna a cunoaste ce trebuie sa facem atunci cand suntem completamente incurcati de tunelurile vietii, care par sa nu se mai termine. Si ce inseamna lucrul acesta ? Teme-te de Dumnezeu si pazeste poruncile Lui ( Ecles. 12:13 ). Sa ne inchinam Lui cu reverenta si sa nu-I spunem in rugaciune mai mult decat avem de gand sa infaptuim ( 5:1-7 ). Sa facem binele ( 3:12 ). Sa traim raspunzatori pentru faptele noastre ( 12:14 ). Sa ne bucuram de viata cand Dumnezeu ne da prosperitate ( 7:14 ). Sa muncim din greu ( 9:10 ) si sa ne bucuram de agoniseala noastra ( 2:24 ).

Drumul spre intelepciune este o atitudinen realista cu privire la viata si acceptarea ca exista intrebari fara raspuns. Drumul spre intelepciune nu inseamna sa primim o explicatie, a-L intreba pe Dumnezeu ce vrea sa facem - apoi sa facem prin credinta.

Privesc spre Sfinţenia Ta şi atunci lacrimi nenumărate îmi curg din ochii care stau îndreptaţi spre Tine. Plâng pentru că ştiu că niciodată nu m-aş putea apropia de Tine, dacă nu ar fi dragostea şi iubirea Ta. Dacă nu ar fi jertfa de pe Calvar. Şi plâng, Doamne, neîncetat, plâng pentru că ştiu că Tu te apropii, mă iei de mână şi-mi ştergi lacrimile. Ştiu asta şi inima îmi tresaltă de bucurie în duhul meu pentru că bunătatea Ta este fără de sfârşit. Vreau şi lupt ca să caut zi şi noapte la Faţa Ta şi să cuget neîncetat la Cuvântul Tău. A Man Running From The Presence Of The Lord

[...] Now, many of you, in your Bibles I want you to turn to the Book of Jonah. It's a... We always talk so much about Jonah being a backslidden and everything. I've always took up for Jonah. I do not believe that Jonah was backslid. I--I do not believe that. I believe it's just that we just sometimes use it, say, "He's a Jonah." But if we... I've already spoke on it in another way, in telling how that I thought Jonah, what took place.
Now, the word of the LORD came to Jonah the son of Amittai, saying,
Arise, and go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry out against it; for their wickedness is come up before me.
But Jonah rose up to flee unto Tarshish from the presence of the LORD, and went down to Joppa; and he found a ship going to Tarshish: so he paid the fare thereof, and went down into it, to go with them unto Tarshish from the presence of the LORD.
Isn't that a sad ending? "A Man Running from the Presence of the Lord," and that's my subject.

Now, first we want to think of this. Jonah was... The reason, the principal reason that I believe that he did this great thing here was because Jonah was a Jew, and he was asked to go to a Gentile city to cry out against it, thinking that he would not be received; because the Gentiles would think, "What's this Jew got to do with us?" But you see, another thing, it gives us a great thing here to see, that God not only is God of the Jew, but He's God also of the Gentile. He's God of all people. He just chose the Jews.

The Jews was called God's chosen people. They were chosen for a specific cause. And that cause was to give to them the law. And they could not keep it. And He just showed by that people, that the law could not be kept. And if He was a--a--a God of righteousness... And the law demanded righteousness, but there was no grace in law to bring a man out; no penalty was paid by the law. But it taken grace to pay that penalty unto where the law put us under.

And Jonah here was called on--as this, one of the minor prophets of the Bible, to go down to this city. And here we find an example of all of us. Every one of us, we always are running from something. We run from troubles; we run from responsibilities. We--we're all prone to do that. We--we are--we're more prone to run than we are to stand and face it out. See? We just--we--we find ourselves running. Sometimes we find ourself prone to run from work. We don't want to--we don't want to work. Some people just think they can make their living without working. But I think Solomon, it was, that said we could find here the answer in watching an ant.
You know a little ant, they tell me if that--every ant doesn't work and lay in, that ant doesn't eat that winter either. So everybody has to--to work.

We got so many things we have to do, so much responsibility that we have to face. Everybody's got to face a certain responsibility.
When you--when you come to--to choose your wife, to get married, or choose your husband, you--you've got to take a responsibility. And then you must remember... Maybe you build a home; it's a nice pretty home. And then remember, as a married woman you got to think of the responsibility of raising children. And you got to think that them pretty slick walls is going to have little, dirty hand prints all over them. Then you got the responsibility of educating your children. You got the responsibility of clothing and feeding. Everything is a responsibility. And so easy when responsibilities face us to shirk from them. And we find out that marriage is a responsibility in all manners.
Even many times we find--this is hard to say, but it's true--that ministers many time shirk a responsibility for standing for the true Word of God when they're confronted with It. They'll shirk that responsibility. When Truth of the Word of God is brought face to face with we human beings, we have--we're prone to shirk back until the last resource.

I just got through talking to my little nephew up there. He's a Catholic, and he... And I baptized that boy in the Name of Jesus Christ here a few years ago, and he got with some little girl and turned Catholic. And I held his mother's hand while she was dying over there. She said to me, the last words, "Take care of Melvin." And he's just been dreaming dreams. He just can't... Every--everyday the last week he's been dreaming dreams. Said, "I'd walk into your church, Uncle Bill; you was standing there preaching; I'd run up to start to make a confession; I'd wake up." He said, "I--I been wrong."
I said, "Melvin, you don't need no interpretation for that. Your place is down there where you belong." And that's right. See?

But to face up to responsibility, sometimes it takes the very hide off of us to do that. As a father to face up the responsibility to give your child a whipping. Them little fellows, you don't want to do that. But as a father or mother you've got to face the responsibility of raising that child, because the Bible said, "Spare the rod and you'll spoil your son." And that still stands good in the sight of every psychologist there is in the world. That still remains God's Truth. If there'd been more of that practiced, we wouldn't have had so much juvenile delinquency and stuff, and the rot that we got in the world today. But the old golden rule of the home's been broken long time ago, and they let the kids do whatever they want to.

But even as I said, ministers, they'll come face to face with Truth, and then walk away from it. See, they're--they're just have--just seems like there's something that they--they don't want to face up to it.
Many time out there people come, say, "I know that's right, Brother Branham, but if I did that, they'd kick me out of the church." What of it? If you don't, they're going to kick you out up there, so you--you got to be kicked out somewhere. See? So you might as well face up to it. Instead of running from it and say, "Well, I'll go over here; I won't go back." Go back, sure, listen to some more of it. Search the Scriptures. Jesus said, "Search the Scripture for in Them you think you have Eternal Life, and They are They that testify of Me." But we find that people won't face up with that.
Being brought to--into the Presence of God and see when God made a promise, and God is obligated to that promise, and when He brings that promise to pass, then people are afraid to face up to the responsibility of coping with the Message of the hour. We find that everywhere.

How about you Lutherans? How many Lutherans was afraid to--people was afraid to face up to Luther's truth when he come forth with justification? Look what it cost you, maybe your own life to come out and confess Jesus Christ and--and become a--a Lutheran.
Looked at you Methodists, how it used to be you all were called holy-rollers; I guess you knowed that. And they'd get under the Spirit and jerk back and forth. And they said they--they had the jerks. The Meth... That... No, that ain't Pentecostals; that was Methodists longs years ago. And they jerked, and shook, and fell under the power of God. And they throwed water in their faces and fanned them with fans, thought they'd passed out. And now, you were considered a bunch of holy-rollers. But you had... Your mothers and fathers had to either accept it, face up to the truth and facts, or turned her down.

What about you Pentecostals that received the restoration of the gifts? When the baptism of the Holy Ghost come out with speaking in tongues and the gifts of the Spirit coming back in the church, why the Methodists wanted to kick you out, and they did do it. But you had to face up to it. It's something you had to do.
What about the issue when it come out about the baptism in the Name of Jesus Christ and you saw it was the truth? You have to face up to it or do something about it. You've got a responsibility; everybody has. And you must face up to these things. All right.

And when you see then in this day now when the Word of God has made these promises of things that we see happening now, then we've got the responsibility to either face up to it or get away from it. You have... You just can't stay neutral; you've got to do something about it. Said... Some move's got to be made. You can't come in that church door and go out the same person you come in. You're either further away or closer to God every time you come in or go out there.
Oh, how easy it is for people to shirk these things. And I want us to think of these when we start into the official services tomorrow night, that I want you to notice when something is confronted, if you--if there's a question about it... If there's a question about it, there's got to be an answer.

Say for instance I said I was going west, and you pointed me this a-way. Well, the first thing you know, I run plumb a-passed my target. And I'm too--I'm northwest. Well, what if somebody points me down this way, and I go that way. I'll pass my target again; I went southwest. Well, as long as there's a question of which was is west, there's got to be a direct answer somewhere. And when these questions confront us about the Bible truths, there's got to be the right answer somewhere. That's right; it's got to be there.
And when we see something presented, I think instead of just running away, say, "Oh, nonsense, I couldn't believe a thing like that; I couldn't believe that," why don't you take the Bible and set down and face up to it. Study It. You're here in the meeting now; just look it over. Check it out yourself with the Word; check the Word by the Word. That's the only way to make It tell the Truth. And It must tell the Truth from Genesis to Revelation.
Christ is the revelation of the whole Bible. In Him, Christ, all the Fullness--fulfilling of all the prophecies of the Bible is met unconditionally in Christ Jesus, 'cause He was God manifested in the flesh.

Now, when we find these things though, when we're confronted and come into a meeting, and see the power of God moving and doing things, and doing supernatural works, and see it performed, and look in the Bible and see that it's promised for this hour; then when we see those things, then we are confronted with a responsibility to either accept it, I mean, as for ourselves...
Now, many people sympathize; many people say it's right. But that don't--that don't make it what--that ain't the thing that you're responsible for.

As I've said... What if I--if I was a young man and looking for a wife, to be married, and here stood a girl that met every qualification that I thought it took to make a woman, why, morally she was a queen, and lovely, and--and a fine personality, a real Christian, everything that I could think of to make me a good wife; no matter how much I think she's perfect, she's exactly right, she isn't mine till I accept her and the responsibility of her being my wife.
That's the same thing the Message is. You might say it's right or this, that, or the other, and say, "I sympathize with it; I believe it's the Truth," but you've got to accept it; and it's got to become a part of you and you a part of it. You've got... Then it's yours.
When you marry this certain woman that you have chosen you are--you are one then. And that's the way you are with Christ. When you see Him manifested and made real, then you are part of Him, and He's part of you; and together you're part of the Message.

Oh, how many denominational ships have we got going down to Tarshish for the Jonahs of these days: nine hundred of them, something, a ship that takes the easy route. Don't want to face up to it. Jonah didn't want to face up the thing of going to the Gentiles. He didn't want to take that cruel message over there: "Within forty days you'll perish if you don't repent." He hated to do that, and he thought, "Them Gentiles, it's hard to tell what they'll do to me." But he had to face up to it. See? But he took a easy ship and went down to Tarshish, went down in the hull of the ship and went to sleep: took the easy route, the easy way.

It's a popular way with the people. It's easy to take the way where everybody can pat you on the back and say you're a good fellow, and, "This is So-and-so, and certain..." and the world will look upon you. It's easy to go the popular way. But when--when you have to do something different, when you have to stand to your conviction of what you know to be the Truth, there's where the hard part; that's the rub comes, right there.
Oh, as we've often sang that old song:
How easy while sailing this sea and its calm,
To trust in the strength of Jehovah's great arm;
But, oh, let the waves begin to blow; let--let the wind blow and whip up the waves, then what do you do?
Something like I was told one time that the lady said back in the horse and buggy days that--that said. The horse run away with her going from church. Said, "What'd did you do?"
Said, "I trusted the Lord until the lines broke." Well, that's the time to trust the Lord, after every--after the lines is broke. You're trusting in the lines until they're broke. Yes.

And so we find out that we have many easy ways to go, ships going down to Tarshish, for it's easy. The unresponsibilities, it just flows in; you have everything coming, everybody likes you, and everybody--nobody disagree with you, you disagree with nobody; now, if that ain't a dishrag (That's right. Yes.), push over, flop over. Why, anybody, I don't care who you are and what you're standing for... Actually, decent thinking people will think more of you if you'll stand for your conviction of what's right. That's right.

Don't care... You take a woman, she might be ever, not very attractive and whatever she is, but you let that woman stand for principles of womanhood, let her stand like a lady, and if a man's got a ounce of man about him, he'll take up for her. Absolutely, we appreciate something that--that somebody's got that they believe that it's the truth and will stand for what they think is right.
How wishy-washy, that's what. Too many Christians today are so soft-soaped and everything until they think all they do is join a church, go in somewhere, put their name on a book, or do a little something, jump up-and-down, shout or--or something like that and call it Christianity. Christianity's a everyday, rugged life living for God in the--this present world. It's a constant burning of the fire and love of God in the heart that sets you afire and puts you out yonder with the people and making converts to Christ.

Responsibility... But it's easy to go the way the world goes. It's easy to flow down the stream. Go out there and set down in the river with your boat. You get your oars and start pulling up against the current; you don't make much time and it goes hard, but you just once let loose the oars and watch how fast you pass trees going down. But look where you're going. When things are floating easy, remember, you're going towards a--a great cataract down there of some sort; you're going towards the falls. And it won't be long till you'll be going over that falls, just floating with the world, easy, the way it goes. You don't want that. No, sir. But you must accept your responsibility.
Now, you believe it and you--you think it's the Truth...

And the responsibility that God has given us in this day to bring this Message... And as I get older and I know my days are shortening up, I feel the responsibility greater than I ever felt: press it on. We must do it. We must get down to it in our--everywhere we go and tell the Message and--and tell the people that Jesus Christ is coming, that He's God and He's coming soon. There's not a--not a hope left in the world but the coming of the Lord [...]

Ar trebui crestinii sa sustina Israelul? [ external source ]

Israelul este o dovada a veridicitatii promisiunilor lui Dumnezeu din Sfanta Scriptura. Aceasta ne aminteste de faptul ca si Cuvantul lui Dumnezeu isi are originea in Israel si ne-a fost dat prin israeliti. Biblia ne demonstreaza ca intreg crestinismul are radacini evreiesti. Primele biserici erau formate din evrei, dupa cum putem citi in Sfanta Scriptura:«Ei sunt israeliti, au infierea, slava, legamintele, darea Legii, slujba dumnezeiasca, fagaduintele, patriarhii si din ei a iesit, dupa trup, Cristosul» (Rom. 9,4-5). De aici reiese clar ca Israelul a fost foarte important la inceputul crestinismului, astfel ca si credinciosii au o mare responsabilitate fata de evrei: «Daca neamurile au avut parte de binecuvantarile (bunurile) lor (ale Israelului) duhovnicesti, este de datoria lor sa-i ajute si ele cu bunurile lor pamantesti» (Rom. 15,27). Daca suntem datori fata de Israel, nu ar trebui sa il si sustinem? Raspunsul este simplu si poate fi structurat dupa cum urmeaza:

1. Dumnezeu iubeste Israelul.
2. Satan il uraste.
3. Cristos va veni din nou pentru Israel.

Daca am inteles aceste trei puncte, atunci intelegem si de ce ar trebui sa sustinem Israelul.

1. Dragostea lui Dumnezeu fata de Israel. Un singur popor de pe intreg pamantul L-a avut pe Dumnezeu in mijlocul lui. Dumnezeu Insusi a coborat pe varful Muntelui Sinai sa vorbeasca cu poporul evreu. Slava ªehina a aratat prezenta Sa reala direct sub ochii poporului. Acest lucru s-a intamplat in locul sfant din pustie (Cortul Intalnirii). Cuvantul«miskon» (Cortul Intalnirii) este derivat din cuvantul ebraic «sehina» (slava lui Dumnezeu). Astfel, Cortul Intalnirii cu slava ªehina era un semn al prezentei directe a Dumnezeului Sfant in mijlocul poporului Sau nesfant. Acesta era un fapt incredibil, dar si un model pentru ceea ce urma sa se intample. Dumnezeu nu doar ca a coborat sa locuiasca intr-un cort, ci chiar a ajuns sa locuiasca intr-un «cort» omenesc, respectiv S-a intrupat.

«Cuvantul S-a facut trup si a locuit printre noi» (Ioan 1,14). Cuvantul grecesc pentru «a locui» este derivat din «skene» (cort). Astfel se poate distinge expresia ebraica al carei sens este «a locui printre ». Dumnezeu – care in mod normal nu poate fi vazut – a locuit vizibil intr-un cort. El a venit din slava in timpul nostru pentru a locui intr-o fiinta umana. El a venit ca evreu in Israel.

Creatorul lumii a ales acest popor: «Eu v-am ales numai pe voi dintre toate familiile pamantului» (Amos 3,2). Bineinteles ca Dumnezeu a avut cunostinta si despre celelalte popoare din lume, dar cuvantul ebraic pentru «a cunoaste» («v-am ales») pe care Amos il foloseste aici include sensul de a avea o cunoastere aprofundata despre ceva anume. El inseamna mult mai mult decat o simpla cunostinta perceputa la nivel mintal, cuprinzand si ideea de cunoastere anterioara. Israelul a fost cunoscut si iubit dinainte de Dumnezeu. Aceasta este esenta incheierii legamantului.

Dumnezeu nu a ales poporul evreu pentru ca acesta ar fi fost cel mai mare sau cel mai bun dintre toate popoarele, ci dimpotriva: «Nu doar pentru ca intreceti la numar pe toate celelalte popoare S-a alipit Domnul de voi si v-a ales, caci voi sunteti cel mai mic dintre toate popoarele. Ci pentru ca Domnul va iubeste, pentru ca a vrut sa tina juramantul pe care l-a facut parintilor vostri …» (Deut. 7,7-8). Oamenii aleg intotdeauna ce este mai mare si mai bun. Americanii iubesc fotbalul american. Antrenorul doreste intotdeauna sa trimita pe teren cei mai buni jucatori pe care ii are la dispozitie. Atunci cand castiga «Superbowl»-ul, nu antrenorul are parte de faima, ci jucatorii, deoarece ei sunt cei mai buni. Cand insa un antrenor nu are la dispozitie decat jucatori slabi si formeaza cu ei o echipa care castiga «Super bowl»-ul, nu jucatorii, ci antrenorul are parte de faima, deoarece a reusit sa realizeze atat de multe avand la dispozitie un material slab. La fel a facut si Dumnezeu. El i-a luat pe cei mai mici si a facut din ei cei mai mari. El i-a luat pe cei mai rai si a facut din ei cei mai buni, pentru ca astfel El singur sa primeasca toata cinstea. La fel face Domnul si cu noi (cititi in acest sens 1 Cor. 1).

Dumnezeu a incheiat un legamant cu Avraam. Acesta este format din trei parti: o promisiune cu privire la tara, o promisiune cu privire la urmasi si o binecuvantare cu totul speciala. Din acest legamant initial s-au dezvoltat trei alte legaminte: unul cu privire la tara, unul cu privire la popor si unul cu privire la casa lui David. Þara si poporul nu pot fi separate. Atunci cand aspectul binecuvantarii legamantului avraamic va intra in totalitate in vigoare, aceasta binecuvantare va fi valabila pentru toate popoarele. Daca poporul evreu si tara Israel vor merge impreuna in directia pe care a stabilit-o Dumnezeu pentru ei, atunci legamantul se va implini, iar binecuvantarea lui Dumnezeu se va revarsa peste toate popoarele. Isus Cristos a venit si pentru a garanta ca legamantul avraamic se va implini: «Cristos a fost, in adevar, un slujitor al taierii imprejur, sa dovedeasca credinciosia lui Dumnezeu si sa intareasca fagaduintele date parintilor» (Rom. 15,8). Cuvantul lui Dumnezeu este adevarat si toate profetiile din Vechiul Testament care vestesc venirea lui Mesia s-au implinit cand Domnul nostru Isus Cristos a venit in lume si a platit pentru pacatele noastre.

La fel se va intampla si cu promisiunile care se refera la viitor. Acestea se vor implini cu certitudine, astfel incat promisiunea binecuvantarii care a fost valabila pentru Avraam se va extinde la intreaga lume. Esenta acestor profetii este promisiunea salvarii. Din punct de vedere istoric, salvarea poporului Israel a fost vizibila la Marea Rosie: «Atunci Moise si copiii lui Israel au cantat Domnului cantarea aceasta. Ei au zis: „Voi canta Domnului, caci si-a aratat slava: a napustit in mare pe cal si pe calaret. Domnul este taria mea si temeiul cantarilor mele de lauda, El m-a scapat. El este Dumnezeul meu, pe El Il voi lauda; El este Dumnezeul tatalui meu, pe El Il voi preamari“» (Exod 15,1-2).

Acest eveniment a fost sarbatorit de evrei mai bine de trei milenii si jumatate, cu ocazia sarbatorii anuale a Pesahului. An de an ei isi amintesc in acest mod ce le-a promis Dumnezeu. Astfel de privilegii deosebite implica insa si o mare responsabilitate. Vedem aceasta in multe pasaje din Biblie, cum ar fi de exemplu in Amos 3,2: «Eu v-am ales numai pe voi dintre toate familiile pamantului, de aceea va voi si pedepsi pentru toate nelegiuirile voastre». Aceasta legatura intre alegere si responsabilitate devine clara si in Evanghelia dupa Luca: «Cui i s-a dat mult i se va cere mult si cui i s-a incredintat mult i se va cere mai mult» (Luca 12,48).

Israelul a fost facut administratorul numeroaselor promisiuni ale lui Dumnezeu. In Prima Epistola catre Corinteni vedem clar ce inseamna aceasta. In primul rand, intendentii trebuie sa fie loiali. Din pacate, Israelul a actionat neloial fata de chemarea de care i s-a facut parte: «Norodul acesta se apropie de Mine cu gura si ma cinsteste cu buzele, dar inima lui este departe de Mine. Degeaba Ma cinstesc ei, invatand ca invataturi niste porunci omenesti» (Matei 15,8-9).

Cand Dumnezeu a venit pe pamantul acesta si a umblat in mijlocul poporului Sau, El a mers adesea pe Muntele Maslinilor si a privit de acolo catre cetatea Ierusalimului, care se afla in centrul promisiunilor Sale. Ierusalimul a fost imaginea vie a responsabilitatii incredintate, deoarece in el se gaseau Templul si liderii spirituali. Acestia insa esuasera in misiunea lor, astfel ca Domnul Isus a rostit urmatoarele cuvinte despre Cetatea Sfanta: «Ierusalime, Ierusalime, care ii omori pe proroci si ii ucizi cu pietre pe cei trimisi la tine! De cate ori am vrut sa-i strang pe copiii tai cum isi strange gaina puii sub aripi si n-ati vrut! Iata ca vi se lasa casa pustie» (Matei 23,37-38).

Dumnezeu a vrut sa ii ofere atat de multe poporului Sau, dar Israelul a refuzat. Cum mai poate Dumnezeu sa il iubeasca in prezent? Cum poate Dumnezeu sa iubeasca in continuare oamenii si locul in care profetii Sai au fost batjocoriti si omorati, Fiul Sau a fost dispretuit si rastignit, iar Biserica Sa asuprita si persecutata? Nu si-a pierdut Israel statutul si chemarea cand L-a respins pe Cel promis? Daca promisiunile lui Dumnezeu erau «inmagazinate» toate in Cel promis, nu au pierdut evreii dreptul la ele atunci cand L-au respins pe Mesia? Nu este normal sa gandim astfel? Cuvantul lui Dumnezeu spune insa cu totul altceva: «In ce priveste Evanghelia ei sunt vrajmasi, si aceasta spre binele vostru, dar in ce priveste alegerea sunt iubiti, din pricina parintilor lor. Caci lui Dumnezeu nu-I pare rau de darurile si de chemarea facuta» (Rom. 11,28-29). Daca am vorbi cu un evreu despre Isus, acesta este raspunsul pe care l-am primi in mod normal: «Eu sunt evreu, nu cred in Isus!» Atitudinea sa va deveni ostila daca insistam sa vorbim cu el despre Mantuitorul nostru. Acest lucru insa nu are nici o influenta asupra felului in care Domnul gandeste despre Israel, deoarece El le-a facut patriarhilor o promisiune care nu s-a implinit inca, dar care urmeaza sa aiba loc.

Este adevarat ca evreii trebuie sa vina la credinta daca doresc sa aiba viata vesnica, dar scopul istoric al lui Dumnezeu si planul Sau de mantuire pentru poporul evreu au ca deznodamant chiar salvarea Israelului. Contempland dragostea lui Dumnezeu pentru Israel putem vedea ceva unic, si anume faptul ca poporul evreu si-a pastrat pana astazi identitatea nationala. Unde sunt babilonienii, unde sunt asirienii, unde sunt egiptenii din Antichitate? In cel mai fericit caz, in urma lor se mai gasesc doar dovezi arheologice. Israelul insa traieste! El este singurul popor care si-a mentinut caracteristica nationala in ciuda expulzarilor si a presiunii de asimilare, este singurul popor care s-a intors in fosta sa patrie si a experimentat o reinviere a limbii biblice. Este singurul popor cu o independenta reinnoita dupa doua mii de ani. Aceasta vorbeste fara doar si poate despre dragostea lui Dumnezeu fata de Israel: «Bunatatile Domnului nu s-au sfarsit, indurarile Lui nu sunt la capat, ci se innoiesc in fiecare dimineata. ªi credinciosia Ta este atat de mare!» (Plang. 3,22-23). Aceasta credinciosie este exprimata prin cuvantul ebraic «heset ». Acesta inseamna «dragoste loiala, permanenta» sau «dovada a indurarii». In Psalmul 107,1 citim de asemenea: «Laudati pe Domnul caci este bun, caci in veac tine indurarea Lui!» Aceasta dragoste vesnica se afla in spatele a tot ceea ce Dumnezeu i-a promis Israelului.

Una dintre cele mai importante promisiuni cu privire la legamantul pe care l-a incheiat Dumnezeu se gaseste in textul din Ieremia 31,35-36: «Asa vorbeste Domnul, care a facut soarele sa lumineze ziua, care a randuit luna si stelele sa lumineze noaptea, care intarata marea si face valurile ei sa urle, El, al Carui Nume este Domnul ostirilor: „Daca vor inceta aceste legi dinaintea Mea, zice Domnul, si neamul lui Israel va inceta pe vecie sa mai fie un neam inaintea Mea!“»

Am auzit odata o relatare despre un pastor din a carui biserica faceau parte multi evrei. El a postat in fata bisericii un panou pe care era afisat cu litere mari subiectul predicii pentru duminica: «Cum pot fi distrusi evreii». In duminica respectiva au sosit la biserica unele persoane care altminteri nu ar fi fost vazute niciodata acolo. In primul rand se aflau rabini evrei importanti si lideri spirituali apartinand diferitelor denominatii. Ei voiau sa auda de la acest pastor crestin cum ar putea fi distrusi evreii. Pastorul s-a ridicat si a citit textul predicii din Ieremia 31,35-37: «Asa vorbeste Domnul, care a facut soarele sa lumineze ziua, care a randuit luna si stelele sa lumineze noaptea, care intarata marea si face valurile ei sa urle, El, al carui Nume este Domnul ostirilor: „Daca vor inceta aceste legi dinaintea Mea, zice Domnul, si neamul lui Israel va inceta pe vecie sa mai fie un neam inaintea Mea!“ Asa vorbeste Domnul: „Daca cerurile sus pot fi masurate si daca temeliile pamantului jos pot fi cercetate, atunci voi lepada si Eu pe tot neamul lui Israel pentru tot ce a facut, zice Domnul“». Atunci un rabin s-a aplecat catre un altul si i-a soptit: «Cred ca lucrurile sunt in ordine». Intr-adevar, totul este in ordine, deoarece Dumnezeu Insusi a jurat ca va ocroti Israelul.

Singura modalitate prin care Israelul ar putea fi distrus pentru totdeauna consta in schimbarea pozitiei soarelui, a lunii, a stelelor, a marii si a tuturor lucrurilor care au legatura cu temeliile lumii. Numai atunci ar putea fi respins Israelul pentru tot ceea ce a facut. Trebuie sa retinem ca acest text din Ieremia 31 a fost scris intr-o perioada in care Israelul era supus unei aspre judecati divine. Imparatii si preotii se indepartasera de Dumnezeu, Ierusalimul si Templul erau distruse, iar poporul fusese trimis in exil. Indiferent cat de mare este departarea poporului evreu de Dumnezeu, El ramane credincios Cuvantului Sau. Acest lucru este valabil nu numai cu privire la poporul evreu, ci si cu privire la Israel ca natiune. Privind la cuvintele din text, observam ca nu este folosit termenul «ha’an» (poporul), ci «hagoi» (natiunea). Ei nu sunt ocrotiti doar personal, individual, ci si per ansamblu, ca natiune.

Ramasita Israelului are o componenta fizica, etnica si spirituala: «Tot asa, si in vremea de fata este o ramasita datorita unei alegeri prin har» (Rom. 11,5); «Peste toti cei ce vor umbla dupa dreptarul acesta si peste Israelul lui Dumnezeu sa fie pace si indurare» (Gal. 6,16). Apostolul Pavel a rostit in acest text o binecuvantare peste cei credinciosi, dar in mod special asupra ramasitei Israelului. Aceasta arata cat de mult iubeste Dumnezeu Israelul in prezent. Unul dintre cele mai importante motive pentru care astazi sustinem Israelul se gaseste in Romani 11. Implinirea promisiunilor lui Dumnezeu pentru evrei are la baza legamantul pe care Cel Preainalt l-a incheiat cu Avraam. Acest legamant este radacina pe care se bazeaza toate promisiunile, inclusiv cele care ni se adreseaza noua, credinciosilor. Daca Dumnezeu ªi-ar incalca credinciosia fata de promisiunile pe care le-a dat poporului evreu, atunci El ar incalca-o si fata de noi, deoarece noi am fost altoiti in acest maslin (cititi in acest sens Rom. 11,24).

Daca promisiunile pentru Avraam nu s-ar implini, atunci nici noi nu am avea nadejde ca promisiunile se implinesc pentru noi. Aceasta ne ajuta sa avem o atitudine corecta fata de Israel: «Nu te fali fata de ramuri. Daca te falesti, sa stii ca nu tu tii radacina, ci radacina te tine pe tine» (Rom. 11,18). Dumnezeu a iubit Israelul in trecut, il iubeste in prezent si a promis ca il va iubi si in viitor.

Dumnezeu a incheiat un legamant cu David: «Casa ta si imparatia ta vor dainui vesnic inaintea Mea si scaunul tau de domnie va fi intarit pe vecie» (2 Sam. 7,16). Cuvantul «vesnic» este foarte important aici, deoarece ne arata ca promisiunea lui Dumnezeu nu poate fi incalcata niciodata, acesta fiind motivul pentru care Mesia va reveni in Israel. El va veni pentru a salva Israelul atunci cand stramtorarea din timpul necazului celui mare va ajunge la apogeu: «Asa vorbeste Domnul: „Ma intorc iarasi in Sion si vreau sa locuiesc in mijlocul Ierusalimului“» (Zah. 8,3); «Picioarele Lui vor sta in ziua aceea pe Muntele Maslinilor, care este in fata Ierusalimului, spre rasarit» (Zah. 14,4).

Cand va reveni, El va inalta Israelul, care va deveni cea mai de seama dintre natiuni, fiind centrul spiritual al lumii: «Se va intampla in scurgerea vremurilor ca muntele Casei Domnului va fi intemeiat drept cel mai inalt munte; se va inalta deasupra dealurilor si toate neamurile se vor ingramadi spre el» (Isaia 2,2). In acest mod si in acel moment se vor implini toate promisiunile care i-au fost facute odinioara lui Avraam. In Noul Legamant este scris ca noi am fost altoiti in poporul Israel, ajungand astfel sa beneficiem de promisiunile divine. Totusi, aceasta promisiune in legatura cu tara isi va gasi implinirea definitiva in viitor. Promisiunea ca tara Israel va fi o binecuvantare pentru intreaga lume si promisiunea facuta lui David, potrivit careia urmasii lui vor sta pentru totdeauna pe tronul lui, iar prin aceasta lumea va fi binecuvantata, se vor implini in Imparatia pe care o va intemeia Isus. Daca Dumnezeu Isi va implini oricum in viitor promisiunile pentru Israel, de ce ar trebui noi sa sustinem Israelul inca de pe acum? Tocmai pentru ca exista un viitor! Oamenii de afaceri prefera sa investeasca in lucruri care au un potential mare pentru viitor. Daca doriti un proiect de lunga durata, atunci investiti-va rugaciunile in poporul lui Dumnezeu! Ce iubeste Dumnezeu, Satan uraste. Nu trebuie sa fiti surprinsi de faptul ca Israelul se afla la stramtorare atat timp cat Satan inca este la lucru.

2. Satan este adversarul Israelului. «Satan» inseamna «potrivnic»; iar el a fost dintotdeauna un adversar al Israelului. Totul a inceput in Geneza. Dumnezeu a promis pentru urmasii lui Avraam binecuvantari speciale. Inca din vremea lui Isaac diavolul a fost la lucru, incercand sa-i corupa pe urmasii lui Avraam. Casatoriile mixte cu poporul pagan al canaanitilor au reprezentat o astfel de oportunitate, deoarece prin aceasta era pusa in pericol pastrarea descendentei pure a lui Avraam. Dumnezeu a trimis insa un salvator, si anume pe Iosif.

Intr-un anumit moment din istorie, poporul evreu era format din doar 70 de persoane. In timpul lui Iosif, toata familia a fost dusa in Egipt. Acolo, in pantecele Egiptului, daca putem spune asa, acesta a devenit un popor puternic. Evreii au stat separat, neamestecandu-se cu egiptenii. Acestia nu aveau deloc legaturi cu evreii; nici macar nu mancau impreuna cu ei. Astfel citim in Geneza 50,20: «Voi negresit v-ati gandit sa-mi faceti rau, dar Dumnezeu a schimbat raul in bine, sa implineasca ceea ce se vede azi, si anume sa scape viata unui popor in mare numar». Oamenii au intentionat intotdeauna raul, dar Dumnezeu a vrut binele, salvan du-ªi si ocrotindu-ªi permanent poporul. In Egipt, Satan a incercat din nou sa distruga ramasita evreiasca prin uciderea tuturor baietilor nou-nascuti.

Dumnezeu a trimis iarasi un salvator, prin persoana lui Moise. El a scos intreg poporul din Egipt, conducandu-l catre tara promisa de Dumnezeu. Acolo acesta s-a dezvoltat intr-o imparatie. In cele din urma, David a fost ales ca imparat. Din nou insa a intervenit diavolul si a incercat sa distruga dinastia lui David. Incidentul cu Batseba aproape ca a adus o judecata definitiva asupra casei lui David, dupa care acesta a pacatuit din nou, cerand numaratoarea poporului. Aceste abateri ale sale puteau sa insemne finalul domniei lui.

In cele din urma, Dumnezeu a trimis din nou un Salvator, Numele Lui fiind Isus. El a venit pentru a-ªi elibera poporul si a aduce in final Imparatia lui Dumnezeu. Acesta este si motivul pentru care Satan nu inceteaza sa atace Israelul, deoarece acesta este locul in care Isus a venit pentru prima oara si in care El va reveni si a doua oara pentru a-ªi intemeia Imparatia. Israelul este tinta atacurilor venite de peste tot din jurul sau. Indiferent de cat de des este atacat de alte popoare, atacatorii nu sunt niciodata condamnati de Natiunile Unite. Atunci cand insa se apara, Israelul este condamnat si scos tap ispasitor pentru toate problemele politice ale lumii. In spatele acestei situatii se afla antisemitismul.

Acesta, din pacate, nu este o relicva a istoriei, ci un fenomen cat se poate de actual. Reinvierea lui este mai puternica si mai raspandita decat s-ar fi asteptat chiar si cei mai pesimisti dintre oameni. Acesta se manifesta deopotriva in Europa, in SUA si in intreg Orientul Apropiat. Antisemitismul va continua sa se dezvolte, ajungand la cel mai inalt nivel in timpul necazului celui mare. In acea perioada, Satan va fi aruncat din cer pe pamant pentru a persecuta poporul evreu: «In cer s-a facut un razboi. Mihail si ingerii lui s-au luptat cu balaurul. si balaurul cu ingerii lui s-au luptat si ei, dar n-au putut birui si locul lor nu li s-a mai gasit in cer. si balaurul cel mare, sarpele cel vechi, numit Diavolul si Satana, acela care insala intreaga lume, a fost aruncat pe pamant si impreuna cu el au fost aruncati si ingerii lui … Cand s-a vazut balaurul aruncat pe pamant a inceput sa o urmareasca pe femeia care nascuse copilul de parte barbateasca … ªi balaurul, maniat pe femeie, s-a dus sa faca razboi cu ramasita semintei ei, cu cei care pazesc poruncile lui Dumnezeu si tin marturia lui Isus Cristos» (Apoc. 12,7-9.13.17).

Pentru ca Satan va veni fizic pe pamant pentru a persecuta Israelul, Isus Cristos va veni de asemenea fizic in aceasta lume pentru a salva Israelul.

3. Isus va reveni pentru Israel. Inainte ca acest minunat rasarit de soare sa vina, va domni un mare intuneric: «Vai, caci ziua aceea este mare; nici una n-a fost ca ea! Este o vreme de necaz pentru Iacov, dar Iacov va fi izbavit din ea» (Ier. 30,7). Acelasi lucru il spune si Domnul Isus: «Atunci va fi un necaz asa de mare cum n-a fost niciodata de la inceputul lumii pana acum si nici nu va mai fi» (Matei 24,21). Acest necaz tine inca de viitor, dar lumea se indreapta vertiginos in directia lui. In textul din Zaharia 12,2 ni se spune despre aceasta vreme: «Iata, voi preface Ierusalimul intr-un potir de ametire pentru toate popoarele de primprejur si chiar pentru Iuda la impresurarea Ierusalimului». Prima parte a versetului inseamna ca, in acea vreme, toti vor fi cuprinsi de gandul la Ierusalim. Orasul Sfant se afla in centrul tuturor proceselor de pace care vizeaza aceasta regiune. Cum ar trebui impartit Ierusalimul? Acordul de la Oslo a esuat tocmai pentru ca nu a putut solutiona aceasta problema.

Ierusalimul este astazi centrul conflictului din Orientul Apropiat. Avand in vedere conflictele de acolo, popoarele lumii sunt parca ametite cand vine vorba despre solutionarea problemei Ierusalimului: «In ziua aceea voi face din Ierusalim o piatra grea pentru toate popoarele. Toti cei ce o vor ridica vor fi vatamati si toate neamurile pamantului se vor strange impotriva lui» (Zah. 12,3). Un exemplu in acest sens este Bill Clinton, fostul presedinte al Statelor Unite ale Americii. El a incercat sa lase in urma sa o mostenire politica importanta atunci cand a convocat cea de-a doua runda de tratative de la Camp David. Intr-o discutie mediata de fostul presedinte american, Ehud Barak s-a intalnit cu Yasser Arafat. Barak a fost de acord cu propunerea americana de a imparti Ierusalimul si a fost dispus chiar sa le cedeze arabilor suveranitatea asupra Muntelui Templului. El a vrut sa pastreze doar suveranitatea simbolica asupra siturilor arheologice de la suprafata. Aceasta ar fi putut solutiona problema. Aproape intreaga Cisiordanie ar fi fost retrocedata, inclusiv Muntele Templului. Yasser Arafat a respins insa propunerea. El a negat chiar ca ar fi existat vreodata un Templu evreiesc. Prin urmare, Arafat a parasit tratativele, acordurile de la Oslo au cazut si a inceput cea de-a doua Intifada. Presedintele Clinton nu a putut sa lase in urma lui acea mostenire politica la care visa. In plus, el a avut de suferit in urma incercarii de a rezolva problema Ierusalimului.

La sfarsitul vremii, aceasta con troversa va afecta toate tarile lumii: «Toa te neamurile pamantului se vor strange im potriva lui» (Zah. 12,3). In spatele acestora se va afla insusi diavolul, care va impinge natiunile sa atace statul evreu. Cristos va reveni insa pentru a salva Israelul. Despre revenirea Sa la sfarsitul necazului celui mare, in timpul luptei de la Armaghedon, Zaharia a prorocit: «Domnul Se va arata si va lupta impotriva acestor neamuri, cum S-a luptat in ziua bataliei» (Zah. 14,3). Domnul Insusi va lupta pentru Israel. Asa cum ªi-a ocrotit poporul in trecut, El o va face si in viitor. La a doua Sa venire, Isus Cristos Se va arata pe Muntele Maslinilor, la est de Ierusalim. El nu va veni nici in Romania, nici in America, ci in Israel: «Atunci Il vor vedea pe Fiul omului venind pe un nor cu putere si slava mare. Cand vor incepe sa se intample aceste lucruri, sa va uitati in sus si sa va ridicati capetele, pentru ca izbavirea voastra se apropie» (Luca 21,27-28). Domnul Isus nu va veni pentru a distruge Israelul, ci pentru a-l elibera: «Atunci tot Israelul va fi mantuit, dupa cum este scris: „Izbavitorul va veni din Sion si va indeparta toate nelegiuirile de la Iacov. Acesta va fi legamantul pe care-l voi face cu ei cand le voi sterge pacatele“» (Rom. 11,26-27).

Legamantul avraamic trebuie sa se bazeze pe neprihanire. Avraam a crezut in Domnul, iar aceasta i-a fost socotita ca neprihanire. Astfel si descendentii lui Avraam trebuie sa creada in Domnul. Atunci se va implini legamantul lui Dumnezeu, iar El le va indeparta pacatele. Este profetit ca ei vor privi la Cristos ca la un fiu unic, Il vor plange si Il vor jeli: «Isi vor intoarce privirile spre Mine, pe care L-au strapuns» (Zah. 12,10).

In ziua aceea se va naste o noua natiune si acest popor va fi salvat si sfintit. Cristos Insusi va veni pentru a sfinti Israelul. Urmatoarea promisiune este o marturie a greutatilor prin care a trecut Israelul de-a lungul istoriei: «El va inalta un steag pentru neamuri, ii va strange pe surghiunitii lui Israel si ii va aduna pe cei risipiti ai lui Iuda de la cele patru capete ale pamantului» (Isaia 11,12). In legamantul initial, Israelul era capul, natiunile ii erau supuse si invatau de la el. Aceasta era binecuvantarea legamantului. Din cauza ca Israel a respins acest legamant si a devenit rebel, Dumnezeu a aplicat o masura de disciplinare. El a coborat Israelul, iar acum neamurile se afla deasupra lui. Perioada neamurilor se va incheia insa, iar atunci se va incheia si stapanirea lor asupra Ierusalimului. Toate acestea se vor intampla insa la cea de-a doua venire a lui Isus. Atunci vom fi din nou martorii implinirii depline a binecuvantarii legamantului. Cand Israelul se va cai, el va deveni din nou capul natiunilor.

Natiunile Ii vor sluji de asemenea lui Dumnezeu in Imparatia mesianica si se vor integra in planurile Celui Preainalt: «Multe popoare si multe neamuri vor veni astfel sa-L caute pe Domnul ostirilor la Ierusalim si sa se roage Domnului. Asa vorbeste Domnul ostirilor: „In zilele acelea, zece oameni din toate limbile neamurilor il vor apuca pe un iudeu de poala hainei si-i vor zice: „Vrem sa mergem cu voi, caci am auzit ca Dumnezeu este cu voi“» (Zah. 8,22-23).

Unde ne aflam noi acum? Timpul se scurge. In anul 1948, Israelul a devenit din nou o natiune independenta, in 1967 Ierusalimul a fost anexat ca si capitala a Israelului, iar in anul 2000 evreii au inceput lupta pentru controlul asupra Muntelui Templului. Toate acestea sunt conforme etapelor restaurarii din Ezechiel 37. Oasele uscate invie, fiind din nou puse laolalta si se transforma in oameni vii. Aceste oase risipite reprezinta Israelul in imprastierea lui. Apoi apar din nou muschii pe oase. Aceasta corespunde readucerii in tara a poporului inainte de anul 1948. Apoi incet apare carnea peste oase, Israelul devenind o natiune. Aceasta este situatia actuala. Dupa aceea pielea acopera corpul, ceea ce reprezinta Israelul in timpul necazului celui mare. In final si duhul se va intoarce inapoi in trup, acesta fiind Israelul dupa intoarcerea sa la Dumnezeu. Mai intai Israelul este restaurat fizic, iar apoi spiritual. Initial evreii se vor intoarce in tara, iar apoi se vor intoarce la Domnul Isus Cristos.

Rezumat:

1. Israelul continua sa fie poporul ales al lui Dumnezeu.
2. In ciuda pacatelor lui, el va fi salvat. 3. Situatia actuala a Israelului este parte a pregatirii lui Dumnezeu pentru implinirea planului Sau profetic.
4. Sustinerea crestina a Israelului corespunde cu intentia lui Dumnezeu de a-i binecuvanta pe toti oamenii: «Ii voi binecuvanta pe cei ce te vor binecuvanta si ii voi blestema pe cei ce te vor blestema» (Gen. 12,3).
Exista doua feluri de sustinere, una fizica si una spirituala: «Mie nu mi-e rusine de Evanghelia lui Cristos, fiindca ea este puterea lui Dumnezeu pentru mantuirea fiecaruia care crede, intai a iudeului, apoi a grecului» (Rom. 1,16). Mesia este Salvatorul nostru. Noi suntem una in Cristos, iar pentru ca avem parte de promisiunile facute evreilor ar trebui sa ii includem in rugaciunile noastre. Pavel a purtat povara aceasta in inima sa: «Fratilor, dorinta inimii mele si rugaciunea mea catre Dumnezeu pentru israeliti este sa fie mantuiti» (Rom. 10,1).

Credinciosia Cuvantului lui Dumnezeu poate fi ilustrata printr-un singur termen – Israel – deoarece prin Israel se confirma ca promisiunile lui Dumnezeu se implinesc. Credeti in Cuvantul lui Dumnezeu si sustineti poporul pe care El l-a ales!

Un savant necreştin a ajuns la concluzia că omul, prin design, este o fiinţă religioasă

Un nou studiu dezvăluie faptul că oamenii sunt programaţi să creadă în Dumnezeu, pentru că asta le oferă şansa unui trai mai bun. Potrivit “Daily Mail”, citat de ziarul “Ziua”, o cercetare despre felul în care se dezvoltă creierele copiilor sugerează că, în timpul procesului de creştere, cei cu tendinţe religioase încep să beneficieze de pe urma convingerilor lor. Acest lucru se observă mai ales atunci când lucrează în grup mic, pentru a asigura viitorul comunitatii lor. Descoperirile lui Bruce Hood, profesor de psihologia dezvoltării la Universitatea Bristol arată ca ideile supranaturale sunt înnăscute în creierele noastre şi că religiile derivă dintr-o forţă psihologică extrem de puternică. Studiile sale sunt susţinute şi de alţi cercetători, care au descoperit dovezi ce leagă sentimentele şi experienţa religioasă de anumite regiuni ale creierului. Se pare că activitatea electrică a acestor zone ar fi responsabilă cu programarea oamenilor de a primi sentimente de spiritualitate. Descoperirile constituie o provocare pentru ateii precum Richard Dawkins, autorul cărtii “The God Delusion”, care consideră ca originea convingerilor religioase o constituie slaba educaţie şi “îndoctrinarea” din copilărie.Profesorul Hood crede că este inutil să încerce să-i facă pe oameni să-şi abandoneze credinţele. “Conform cercetării noastre, copiii au un mod natural, intuitiv de a gândi, care îi conduce la tot felul de credinţe supranaturale despre cum funcţionează lumea. Pe măsură ce cresc, ei suprapun aceste convingeri cu nişte abordări mult mai raţionale, dar tendinţa către convingerile supranaturale rămâne ca religie”, a declarat Hood. Profesorul, care îşi va prezenta rezultatele cercetării în cadrul întâlnirii anuale a Asociaţiei britanice a ştiinţei, consideră că religia organizată este doar o parte a unui spectru de convingeri supranaturale. Într-unul dintre studiile sale, el a descoperit că atei înfocaţi s-au opus ideii de a accepta un transplant de organe de la un criminal, din cauza superstiţiei că personalitatea individuală ar putea fi stocată în acele organe.

Iată că oamenii de ştiinţă încep să vadă dincolo de ochelarii de cal ai ateilor şi încep să aibe surprize la care nu s-au aşteptat. Este interesat cum vor răspunde cei ca Dawkins la concluziile lui Bruce Hood. Fiindcă ateii de acest gen împroaşcă peste tot cu ideea cum că oamenii sunt religioşi ori din cauza lipsei de educaţie, ori fiindcă au fost îndoctrinaţi de către părinţii lor. Nu cred că le va cădea bine să afle că unii oameni de ştiinţă au ajuns la concluzia că omul a fost “construit” să fie o fiinţă religioasă. Asta nu mai este o chestie cu care s-a jucat evoluţia, nu este o întâmplare şi nu este o chestie genetică, precum ochii albaştri la nordici… E pur şi simplu o chestie de design.

E adevărat că Hood nu împărtăşeşte o perspectivă creştină asupra lumii şi a vieţii, deci nu vrea să vadă prea mult în spatele propriei sale descoperiri… şi nici nu a devenit apărător al religiei, cochetând în continuare cu ateismul, dar totuşi teoria lui este remarcabilă şi sigur va produce consecinţe pozitive. Deja mulţi au preluat ipoteza sub forma “born to believe in God”, de care el se disociază, spunând că nu avrut să spună asta, cum afirmă şi pe propriul său blog. Doar că cei care nu sunt înveninaţi cu ateism asta înţeleg din spatele teoriei sale.

Christians in the Middle East [ external source ]

Of the eight million people or so living in Israel, around 20% are Arabs—of whom about 7% are Christian. Israel's Arab Christians, in other words, number only about 110,000 people, living mostly in tight communities in Jerusalem and the Galilee.

For all the solicitous attention paid to them by such international Christian organizations as the World Council of Churches, you would think they were a larger and more important group. Much of the Vatican's diplomacy—its occasionally adversarial relations with Israel, its Palestinian favoritism, its reluctance to condemn the Islamic dictatorships—derives from its belief that the ancient Christian communities of the Middle East are at risk, and that the best way to defend them is to be seen to side with Arabs against their perceived enemies.

Hard to say the Vatican is wrong about the first part. At the beginning of the twentieth century, large numbers of Christians still lived in their traditional Orthodox and Catholic communities, from the Holy Mountain of Mount Athos all the way around the Mediterranean—through Asia Minor, down the Levant, and across North Africa to Morocco. In 1914, they made up 25% of Ottoman Empire.

The next year the Turks began the systematic part of their slaughter of the Armenians, and the churches of the Middle East have been in catastrophic decline ever since. By 2001, Christians were down to less than 1% of the Turkish population. The recent news out of Egypt—thousands of Coptic Christians fleeing the country since March, with 28 killed and hundreds wounded in Cairo on October 9—is only the latest installment in the ongoing story of the dying of ancient Christianity in the Middle East. The single most dangerous thing in the world to be, right now, is a member of a Christian community in a Muslim country.

The second part of the Vatican's view of the Middle East, however—the idea that what is left of the Christians can be defended by trying to forge relations with Muslim extremists—has proved dangerously wrong, both as an understanding of the Christians' situation and as a strategy for helping them.

Pope Benedict XVI has spoken often and clearly about Islamists, linking their energetic primitivism to the postmodern ennui of European elites. The Vatican's international-affairs officers, however, have been slow to grasp the pope's message, and on they seem to tread on the tired, old paths, seeking in the dark woods of Muslim politics some way to preserve the last remnants of the world as it was.

Christians in Europe and America need to recognize that, of all the Middle Eastern countries, the one that has managed best at keeping its Christians is Israel. The nation's Arab Christian community is small, but for decades it has remained stable. Meanwhile, the birth this year of the Republic of South Sudan has the potential to alter some of the diplomatic landscape. Although the nation is more African than Arab, its emergence as an ethnically Christian nation—the first in the area since France tried to protect the Maronite Christians with the creation of Lebanon in the 1940s—may offer a refuge for threatened Christians throughout the Middle East.

The most interesting and least understood change in the region, however, is the growth over the last decade of an entirely new Christian population. At least 200,000—and possibly as many as half a million—non-Arab Christians now live in Israel. Some are asylum-seekers from Sudan and Eritrea. Others are illegal immigrants who have slipped in from Egypt and guest workers from Goa, South America, and the Philippines. Add in the Jewish converts and the immigrants from Russia, and their numbers start to look significant.

A first-rate piece of reporting by the Associated Press this week describes the emergence of these people as an identifiable group in Israel. They work in normal Israeli jobs, their children speak Hebrew, and they think of themselves as fully Israeli—in marked contrast to the local Arab Christians who feel a cultural tie to Palestinian Muslims and remain generally antagonistic to the State of Israel.

Israel is not alone. In the Italian publication Chiesa, Sandro Magister notes that, throughout the Gulf, the population of immigrant workers is expanding. Kuwait alone has 350,000 Catholics among its guest workers, mostly from the Philippines and India, and they have begun to create their own culture within the Islamic state.

Pressure from local priests is at least causing the Vatican to move, however slowly, toward rearranging local vicariates to match the reality of the new distribution of the Christian population. Many of the old churches of the Middle East belonged to the Eastern Orthodox forms of Christianity, and few of the new Christians are Orthodox—which leaves the Orthodox denominations of Europe and America unwilling to act. The World Council of Churches, too, dominated by the fading Mainline Protestant churches, still blunders along in its old tracks, refusing to see the changed world of Christianity across the region.

Nothing in the Middle East ever seems to work out quite the way one hopes. But surely there is something worth noting in the re-emergence of even a tiny Christian population in the region that is unmoved by the Arab hatred of Israel, the ancient tribal divisions, and the envenomed rhetoric that dominates the political scene.

God Empowers All

God wants to empower you to serve others. Every one of us is called to reach out to and be a blessing to others. Each of us are called to be a minister and called to a ministry.

As you come to him, a living stone rejected by men but in the sight of God chosen and precious, you yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.

Frequently the term “minister” is used to describe someone who preaches or teaches the word of God. However, I have great disdain for using this terminology in this manner. The word minister means servant. Every believer is a minister of God. Peter writes that ALL believers are priests you are a “holy priesthood” built up “to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.” This can not in any way be limited to pastors or preachers. Each of us has a ministry to offer up spiritual sacrifices to God. The word “sacrifices” should not be understood as in the English terminology as in we are really making a sacrifice to do this. As though we are sacrificing some kind of joy or job or whatever it might be. This is a type that Peter is using. The priests of the old covenant offered animals as a sacrifice to God. Sacrifices in the old covenant were used for two things, one way was to stand in the stead of the offerer to cover his sins and the other was in worship to God. Our spiritual sacrifices falls into the second category as the first category is fulfilled in Jesus Christ once for all. As priests we are to offer worship to God. Not merely through singing or praying though these play an integral part. I will draw further on this imagery using a writing of Paul to the Romans.

I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.

As priests we offer up our bodies as a living sacrifice which is our spiritual worship. This is the spiritual sacrifice that Peter speaks of. We offer our bodies up as holy and therefore acceptable to God. This not only involves obedience to the commands of God out of a pure heart, but also offering ourselves for God’s use to serve and love one another. Each of us has a role to play in serving, helping and ministering to those who need the gospel, who are hurting in the body of Christ, who need prayer and loving our neighbor and enemy. There are so many ways that we can serve others. Just a call to tell them we love them and are praying for them means so much to people.

Sometimes we over spiritualize the gifts of the Spirit and don’t understand that a word of wisdom can simply be something that the Lord put on your heart for someone else or a word of knowledge could be you waking up in the middle of the night, knowing someone needs prayer and praying for them, then letting them know about it. Each of us who are in the body of Christ can operate in the gifts. A gift is not an office, but simply a purpose that God wants to use us for. The gift of the Spirit may come only once in a lifetime or it could come frequently. God divides to every person as he wills and purposes.

Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.

To each and every believer that is baptized into the body of Christ (‘by one Spirit are you baptized into one body’) the manifestation of the Spirit is given. What is the purpose of receiving the manifestation of the Spirit. So you can glorify yourself? No, it is for “the common good” as Paul wrote. The manifestation of the Spirit is given to every Spirit born believer so that we would be able to minister to and serve others for the glory of God. As in the old covenant when God gave the spirit of wisdom to men and women to build the tabernacle of witness so does he give the Spirit to us so that we can together build up the spiritual house of God, the church. (The church is not a building, the church is all believers.) God has gifts in his body for every man and every woman.

Every person can operate in the gifts of the Spirit for the good of others. Every person has a ministry to the other believers and neighbors around them. We cannot sit back and wait for the pastor and his wife to reach out and help every person. We must follow the leadership of the Spirit and be used of God to reach out and bless others. This is the purpose of the body, many members, one body. Every gift should be used in order as Paul wrote. There are varieties of service or ministry, but the same Lord and there are varieties of activities but it is the same God who empowers them in EVERYONE. It does not say it is the same God that empowers them in the pastor or the associate minister. No, it says in EVERYONE.

Palestinian TV: Jews are 'impure'

Israel's 'peace partners' in the Palestinian Authority (PA) this week continued to work to ensure that there will never be true peace when they informed the Palestinian public that Jews are impure infidels.

In its Sunday broadcast on PA TV the program Sights of Jerusalemreported on the weekend rain in Jerusalem, and in particular on the Temple Mount:

"The golden dome [of the Mosque of Omar] shines with colors of the sky, with the white of clouds, while the joyous holiday [Eid Al-Adha] is good to the residents. The light rain cleanses the steps of the foreigners [Jews] so that the feet [of Muslims] in prayer will not step on impurity."

Footage of religious Jews visiting the Temple Mount (Judaism's holiest site) was shown to make sure viewers understood that the impure foreigners spoken of are in fact Israeli Jews.

Back in August the same program referred to Jews praying at the Western Wall as "sin and filth" contaminating what should be a wholly Islamic city.

This is the common fare fed to a Palestinian public that was supposed to be educated for peaceful coexistence with Israel's Jews. And still Israel is blamed by the international community for being the roadblock to peace.

Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi responded fiercely to Israel's testing of an advanced ballistic missile Wednesday, saying the country was "always ready for war."

Israeli defense officials said the military successfully test-fired an advanced missile from a base outside of Tel Aviv. Foreign news reports said the test involved firing a long-range Jericho missile capable of carrying a nuclear warhead and striking Iran.

"Iran has always been threatened by Israel. This is not new for us. We have been hearing threats from Israel for eight years. Our nation is a united nation. Its roots are deep in history. Such threats are not new to us," Salehi told the Hürriyet Daily News Wednesday on the sidelines of the Istanbul Conference for Afghanistan, adding that if any country tried to insult Iran, it would respond very fiercely.

"We are very confident of ourselves. We can defend our country," he said.

'Iran, Turkey, Syria Belong to Same Family'

"Iran, Syria and Turkey are members of the same family. If a member of a member falls into a problem, the other member of the family helps him," Salehi said regarding the impact of Turkey's tense relations with Syria and Turkey's relations with Iran.

Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad had promised to meet the demands of his people and that the Syrian issue should be dealt with "patiently, " he added.

"Assad promised to meet the demands of his people. He has promised constitutional reforms," he said, adding that the leader had promised to hold multi-party parliamentary elections. "President Assad has promised to meet the [people's] promises. We have to be patient. With patience, many things can be solved, especially in the Middle East."

'We Have the Best Relations with Turkey'

Iran and Turkey have "the best of relations," Salehi said, adding that this was why he had come to Turkey for the third time in the last eight months.

"We are always in constant consultation with my fond brother [Foreign Minister Ahmet] Davutoğlu. Turkey and Iran are two important countries in the region. Our bilateral relation is independent from international issues," Salehi said.

Syria Fully Accepts Arab Peace Plan, League Officials Says

Syria on Wednesday fully accepted an Arab League plan to end nearly eight months of bloodshed, during a ministerial meeting at the organisation's Cairo headquarters, a League official said.

"The Syrian delegation accepted the Arab League plan without reservations and in its entirety," the official said.

The Arab roadmap calls for an immediate halt to the bloodletting in Syria, the removal of tanks from the streets, and the start of a dialogue between the Damascus regime and its opponents.

The plan was submitted Sunday to Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Muallem at a meeting in Doha and a reply had been initially due on Monday, but Syria asked for a delay to allow its leadership to mull the proposals.

Hours before the meeting in Cairo, Syria's largest opposition group urged the pan-Arab body to freeze the country's membership in the organisation.

PKK Fight Top Issue in Erdogan EU Trip

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has again slammed Europeans for ignoring the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party's, or PKK, activities in their territories, calling on German officials to cooperate more in the anti-terror fight and help Turkey join the European Union.

"We are totally unable to understand the tolerance shown to the activities of the terror organization in some European countries despite the fact that we have provided them all the necessary and concrete intelligence and documents [about such activities]," Erdoğan said at a special gathering with the participation of Germany's Chancellor Angela Merkel on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the arrival of Turkish workers in Germany.

"Leaving Turkey alone in its fight against a terror organization committing crimes against democracy, peace and humanity hurts the conscience and [destroys] the credibility of European countries," he said.

The rise in terror attacks in recent months, which have killed dozens of people caused fury among much of Turkish society and government officials. It spurned an incursion into northern Iraq, as well as a large diplomatic campaign against mainly European countries that have allegedly remained indifferent to the PKK-affiliated groups in their territories.

In earlier remarks late on Tuesday, Erdoğan used a harsher tone against those countries without naming them.

"They must see how the tolerance shown to the terrorist organization is turning into bloody attacks in Turkey. The terror organization is not solely responsible for these inhuman attacks. Those who support and provide financial and moral assistance to the terror organization are equally responsible in slaughtering that unborn baby," the prime minister said.

In her response to Erdoğan, Merkel recalled their policy against terrorism, reiterating that "Germany was always on Turkey's side in its fight against terror."

The PKK is listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the United States and the EU.

Turkey's Bid to Join EU

Erdoğan also raised the topic of Turkey's accession to the EU. "Our expectation and hope from Germany, as a country, which we see as very close to us, is to more strongly support our EU [accession] process," he said.

The current German government, however, has repeatedly opposed full Turkish membership in the 27-nation bloc.

Hinting that Turkey's accession will make the EU a global player, Erdoğan demanded Merkel take the initiative to make the EU a global actor in the future through adopting visionary policies.

"Leaders who fail to think big cannot turn the EU into a global actor," he said.

In further remarks, Erdoğan described Germany as a country that should back Turkey's EU bid more strongly than any other member countries because of its close relationship with Turkey.

"This should be a Germany that cooperates with Turkey on Turkey's international matters ranging from the Cyprus problem to the 1915 incidents [Armenian genocide claims], and from EU negotiations to the fight against terror," Erdoğan said.

'Wir Sind Zusammen'

Apart from criticisms and declarations of expectations on sensitive issues, Erdoğan was generally soft in his messages on the integration process of over 2.5 million Turks into German society.

"I openly say: Germany is no longer a bitter homeland for Turkey and Turks are no longer immigrant workers for Germany. We are two nations that made history come closer to each other. We are together. Or, 'Wir sind zusammen,'" he said.

Recalling that some nationalistic groups launched campaigns under the slogan of "Turken Raus" or "Turks out," Erdoğan said Turks who helped in the reconstruction and development of West Germany after World War II did not deserve such treatment. "We are in agreement with Germany on the fact that assimilation is also a crime against humanity like racism and discrimination are."

Erdoğan also jokingly touched on the German national football team's star midfielder, Mesut Özil, who is of Turkish descent. The prime minister said Mesut's goals for Germany made all of Turkey very happy – provided he did not score them against Turkey.

Barzani Begins Turkey Visit

The head of the Kurdistan Regional Government, or KRG, in northern Iraq, Masoud Barzani, will arrive in Turkey Thursday for an official visit.

The Turkish Foreign Ministry said Barzani was expected to hold meetings with Turkish President Abdullah Gül, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu during his three-day stay in Turkey.

The fight against the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK, as well as opportunities to further develop relations with Iraq and the KRG would be high on the agenda of the meetings, the ministry added.

Turkey, North Cyprus Sign New Energy Deal

The Turkish Petroleum Corporation, or TPAO, signed an oil field services and production agreement with the Turkish Cypriot Economy and Energy Ministry in Nicosia Wednesday.

Delivering a speech at the ceremony, Turkish Energy Minister Taner Yıldız said northern Cyprus and TPAO signed a transparent agreement complying with international law. The agreement gives permission to TPAO to conduct exploration, drill oil wells and run a drilling platform on northern Cypriot soil.

Turkish Ambassador to Nicosia Halil İbrahim Akça also attended the deal ceremony.

Yıldız met Wednesday with Turkish Cypriot Prime Minister İrsen Küçük in Nicosia as part of talks in northern Cyprus. Yıldız said it was essential that any resources of oil or natural gas should be shared fairly if such resources were ever found around Cyprus.

Meanwhile, a Turkish seismic research vessel concluded research in the eastern Mediterranean Wednesday. The Piri Reis arrived at Famagusta port and collected data to be evaluated later.

The ship set sail from İzmir's Urla Port on Sep. 23 for the eastern Mediterranean to conduct geophysical research and collect seismic data on behalf of Turkish Cyprus.

Istanbul Process Launched for Afghanistan

Fourteen countries involved in Afghanistan, including neighbors China, Pakistan and India, have agreed to an initiative called the "Istanbul process," which aims for regional security cooperation, according to a joint statement.

Officials from countries involved will work on the measures in order to create joint regional projects, while the outcome will be presented to the ministerial meeting of the initiative in Kabul next June.

"We have [created] the Istanbul process, which sets forth concrete mechanisms and proposals, including confidence-building measures," Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu said Wednesday in a joint press conference with his Afghan counterpart, Zalmai Rassoul.

Afghanistan requested that the initiative evolve into an agreement that would be binding for participant countries, but other regional countries preferred to move at a slower pace, a Turkish Foreign Ministry official told the Hürriyet Daily News.

The process would evolve gradually and regional countries will decide where it will lead, the Turkish diplomat said.

Representatives from 20 countries and international organizations gathered in Istanbul Wednesday, aiming to chart the way ahead for Afghanistan. A U.S.-led NATO mission to the country is scheduled to pull out all foreign combat troops by the end of 2014.

"To realize the potentials of regional economic cooperation that is so crucial for the future, the region must come together in cooperation and solidarity to a degree that is not yet achieved," Afghan President Hamid Karzai said at opening ceremony of the conference. "Today in Istanbul we are coming together to subscribe to a new vision of regional cooperation."

"There will be no hope for peace in Afghanistan without help from its neighbors to combat 'terror groups,'" he said.

Karzai asked for Islamabad's support to get the top Taliban leadership based in Pakistan to join the peace process on Afghanistan.

"Our hope is that with help of our brothers in Pakistan, we'll manage to [wean] the leadership of Taliban off some of the long-established network support that is enjoyed outside of Afghanistan and integrate them into the peace process," the Afghan leader said.

'Afghanistan Can't Fight Alone'

The bundle of issues Afghanistan is dealing with, including terrorism, extremism and human and drug smuggling, cannot be solved by a single country alone, Turkish President Abdullah Gül said.

The statement mentions cooperation on border security, combating against terror and all kinds of extremism based on violence, measures against human and drug trafficking, along with economic and cultural collaboration and visa facilitation. References to radicalism will be removed from education curriculums, according to the declaration.

"Resolutely combating and eliminating terrorism in all its forms and manifestations and violent extremism and preventing safe havens for terrorists and terrorism in the region" is among the principles of the declaration.

The declaration also condemned the killing of former Afghan President and peace envoy Burhanuddin Rabbani.

The conference took place a day after a trilateral summit hosted by Gül brought together the presidents of Afghanistan and Pakistan in a bid to ease tensions between the two neighbors. Talks on Tuesday saw Afghanistan and Pakistan agree to cooperate with an investigation committee, including Turkey's presence, into the assassination of Rabbani.

Karzai and Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari, with the participation of their military and intelligence chiefs, had a dinner on Tuesday, a first since tension rose between the two neighbors, a Turkish diplomatic source said.

Absent from Wednesday's conference was United States Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who canceled her participation after her 92-year-old mother died. Her deputy William Burns took her place.

On the sidelines of the conference, Davutoğlu had bilateral meetings with several ministers, including his Iranian counterpart.

Pro-Palestinian Activists Sail from Turkey to Gaza

An international group of pro-Palestinian activists has set sail from Turkey aboard two boats aiming to run an Israeli naval blockade of Gaza, organizers said on Wednesday.

The 27 activists on board the vessels are drawn from Australia, Canada, Ireland and the United States, and included Palestinians.

"The Canadian ship Tahrir and Irish ship Saoirse have successfully reached international waters, initiating "Freedom Wave to Gaza," the organiszrs from Ustogaza group said in an e-mailed statement. "The boats have embarked from Turkey and are on the Mediterranean Sea."

Israel's military had no immediate comment.

The latest challenge to Israel's blockade of the Palestinian enclave comes during a period of heightened tension in the eastern Mediterranean. Turkey was angered by Israel's refusal to apologize for the killing of nine Turks when Israeli commandos boarded the Mavi Marmara aid vessel 2010.

It was also disappointed by the conclusions released in August of a UN inquiry into the incident, and has increased its naval presence in the Eastern Mediterranean.

A Turkish foreign ministry official confirmed that two boats had set sail from Turkey's southern coast, having asked for permission to go to the Greek island of Rhodes.

The official said the vessels were not Turkish-flagged, had no Turkish passengers and the captains were not Turkish.

Activists tried to send another flotilla to Gaza in June, but all nine vessels were stopped.

They were intercepted or stopped from leaving port, suffered suspicious damage before sailing, or pulled out amid speculation that their organisers had succumbed to political pressure.

The Irish ship Saoirse was one of the vessels damaged before it could set sail then. Paul Murphy, a socialist member of the European Parliament, was among the activists on board the Saoirse this time too.

"This ship to Gaza is another response to the call from people within Gaza to try to break the siege they suffer under," Murphy wrote in a blog posted on the Internet.

The Ustogaza statement quoted several Americans on board the Tahrir.

"We carry inspiration from the Arab Spring and the worldwide 'Occupy' movements that are demanding freedom and justice. Where governments fail, civil society must act. As Americans we are fed up with our government's unquestioning support of Israel no matter how violent, illegal and oppressive its actions," said Ann Wright, described in the statement as a former U.S. army officer and diplomat.

Israel Ready to Stop Boats Heading for Gaza

The Israeli navy will prevent two yachts carrying pro-Palestinian activists that left Turkey on Wednesday from breaching an Israeli blockade and reaching the Gaza Strip, an Israeli military official said.

Lieutenant-Colonel Avital Leibovich, speaking to reporters by telephone, would not say how the boats might be stopped, saying only "we will have to assess and see if we are facing violent passengers."

Israel was aware two yachts had set sail carrying Irish, Canadian and United States activists, Leibovich said. Describing their journey as a "provocation," she said they were still far from the Israeli and Gazan coast.

Israel would offer to unload any aid supplies on board and deliver them to Gaza, Leibovich said. Israel blockades the Gaza coast to prevent the smuggling of weapons to Palestinian gunmen in the territory, she added.

The military spokesman's office said the navy was "prepared to contact" the vessels and had "completed the necessary preparations in order to prevent them from reaching the Gaza Strip."

Israel has blockaded Gaza since Hamas seized control of the territory in 2007, after routing Western-backed Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. Israel permits humanitarian aid and supplies to reach the territory through a land crossing, and Gaza also shares a border with Egypt.

An Israeli government official told Reuters that Israel "will take whatever measures will be necessary" to maintain its blockade.

Israeli commandos killed nine Turkish nationals on one ship in a Gaza-bound flotilla last year when the activists fought them with clubs and knives as the commandos tried to seize control of the ship to enforce the blockade.

The incident badly damaged ties between Israel and Turkey, which reached a crisis point two months ago when Ankara expelled the Israeli ambassador after Israel rejected Turkey's request for an apology for the flotilla deaths.
