One thing that makes a momma's life easier is a good bag. Sometimes - between the computer bag, the diaper bag, and a purse I just feel like a bag lady and with all the straps around my neck and shoulders plus toting a 20 pounder I can start feeling like I should have trained for olympic body building or something. That's where this old school american bag from Conversation Pieces comes in... its the perfect size to help me condense some of my excess baggage. When M and I are running short errands around town or even into the office I can throw in my calendar and my notepad, my wallet, a diaper, burp cloth, and a snack (for both of us), and other purse necessities. In three words: I love it.

It's a question I've been pondering lately. Even more so with my invitation to be included in Influence Conference as a community leader. What is it that I actually plan to do with MY ONE wild and PRECIOUS life? Just one. Just me. I can't plan for anyone else, but me - myself... thats a whole different ball game. I believe the Lord holds my plans in His hands and though I can't begin to discern the depths of them, I know His plan is not for me to sit idle and His plan for me is not to stare at my own belly button. I have this one (I'll say it again..) wild and precious life, what is it I plan to do with it?

I've got so many things on my heart -- not all are necessarily clear desires or things I know will (or I even realllly want to) happen, but ideas of what my influence is and/or can be. Some are concrete and real now, some need room to grow, some are pipe dreams, some I'm horrible at, some are what ifs... Here's a laundry list:

writing an ebook

writing a book

lead a youth bible study

blogging for a nonprofit to help raise awareness for a cause i believe in

adoption

living abroad / missions

loving my neighbors well

being intentional about building community

be an advocate / spokesperson for something I believe in

show hospitality in word and deed

loving my spouse well

continued education

raising my child(ren) in the nurture and admonition of the Lord

be transparent with my beliefs

be teachable and trainable

pursue relationships

have compassionate boldness
have bold compassion

Some of the things on that list feel really personal and I haven't even begun to scratch the surface of what it might mean for my life. Like adoption -- I can't begin to fathom it, but almost can't talk about it without crying. Or an ebook -- what would I write about and who says I've got what it takes? And some of the list, like loving my neighbors well, I don't even want to "do business with," because I know it means sacrifice and could be, for lack of a better word, messy.

aaahhh.. well there's a piece of my heart right there for ya.

Here I am Lord.

I am just beyond happy with this maxi trend right now. I love that long (and modest) is the new sexy. Such great news in my book (don't get me wrong, you'll find some short numbers in my closet too). Anywhoo -- if you remember one thing about this post remember this: STITCHFIX IS THE BOMB and here is why...

Any of you remember "grab bags?" You could get them at toy stores or the dollar store. You pay $1-$5 and pick out a brown paper bag marked girl or boy and you had NO idea what was going to be inside. It was kind of like gabling for kids and the surprise of what candy and trinkets was inside was almost more than I could handle. Well, stitchFix takes all the excitement of getting a wrapped surprise and puts an awesome adult spin on it. All the big stars have one and now you can too --> your own personal shopper! Yup -- the consultants at stitchfix pack a special surprise box tailored just for you.

How it works:
You fill out a survey online about your likes, dislikes, favorite stores, and style influences (its actually really fun to fill out and even includes picking out pictures of outfits you like more than others -- like the eye doctor, better one? or two? two, or three?... i digress...). Once you complete your profile you are paired with stylist that best fits your style. From there you pay $20 upfront to order your fix. You can also specify when ordering what kind of things you would like to see in your fix, i.e. cocktail attire, sundresses... I asked for a maxi skirt. :)

And then your pretty brown wrapped package arrives (again, remember brown paper grab bags - this is way awesomer. and yes, awesomer is a word). I did a happy dance when my box arrived -- it was much like my Christmas morning happy dance (man, i'm goofy and using a lot of parenthesis today). Something else awesome about how everything arrives is that each has a tag with suggestions on how to wear the garment. So it really is like you have a stylist with you with you try them on.

Once you've picked out what you like: Whatever you decide not to keep you put in a prepaid return envelope and send back. What also is great is that you don't just send it back, but you fill out a quick little questionare online so that your stylist will know how to better taylor your next fix based on what you liked and didn't like about your fix.

From my fix, I only kept the skirt. Which only keeping one thing is not a loss because now knowing how different things didn't fit or wasn't quite my style will only make my next fix better. Also -- y'all know I'm a bargin hunter and so don't usually spend this kind of $$ on my clothes, so next time I'll request for some items that are little friendlier for my personal budget (total disclosure: I was given a credit to do this review).

Y'all -- I HATE The Bachelor. I do. And I HATE The Bachelorette. In theory, I really do dislike these shows so so much. Every season I swear to myself I won't watch. And then... well duh, I watch them. And I sit there watching them and as one of my friends says about his own viewing of it - "If you really want a good view of the depth of my depravity, how much I can sit and judge someone, you should come watch me watch the bachelor." - Yup. That's me too. I sit. I get sucked in. And then I start hatin' on and judging people. That show is not good for my soul. It makes me ugly. Why do I find it entertaining? Sometimes it is like watching a train wreck. I really honestly gave the show up and reallllly was not going to watch... but... a new twist... I know one of the contestants. Now I HAVE to watch. Right? I mean, I hate that I have to... but I have to.

Yup. There's Mr. Ryan Bowers there in the cowboy hat (picture scanned from college yearbook). I didn't know him super well, but we went to college together and were a part of the same campus ministry. Star football player and all around good guy. So yea... now I have to watch right?

Well, okay enough of that. I of course only have nice things to say about Ryan, but I better stop talking on the subject of The Bachelor before I start spewing negative things about the over usage of superlativs (is every episode truly more dramatic than the last - the most ever?!) or how contestants act like they don't know that they signed up for a show that their "date" would be kissing 15 other people,... right. yes. stopping there. Again - WHY do I watch?!? Please, if we have any sort of relationship and I can claim I know you - don't go on this show so I can stand some sort of a chance of never watching it again.

I first posted about my new online shop love, Karen Kane, HERE as I sported a new spring to summer cardigan. I continue to get so much use out of it as I pair it with different pants/shorts/skirts as the weather keeps fluctuating. I way love it and I am also way loving my first ever sequin top (I can't believe I've never owned one -- it is too fun!) and this blue cargo skirt -- both courtesy of Karen Kane. There are so many things you could do with these pieces. I dressed them down here to wear to a high school play (go Grease lightning!), but I could have easily ditched the belt & jacket and put on some stilettos and and up-do for a hot date with the hubster man. That's one of the main things I love about KK -- the versatility of their line. From the office to dinner to a night out, they've got you covered. (& p.s. they have plus sized women's clothing too!)

Please join me in praying for my boss's son, Brennan (16-years-old). He was in a golf cart accident on Wednesday and was life flighted to Vanderbilt. He remains in critical condition. Please pray for the bleeding and swelling in his brain and that he would have no long term affects from his injuries. Also pray that the peace that surpasses all understanding would cover him and the rest of his family. One of his best friends, Ryan, was with him in the accident and passed away. Pray for Ryan's family. Pray Pray Pray. Pray that God would be glorified.

{Cinco de Mayo -- porque es un dia en la calendaria? solomente un dia por la gente beber. la verdad? hablas spanglish? comprende?}

For real though - I don't understand Cinco de Mayo. Don't get me wrong - I like dressing festively and sipping a festive marg with the rest of them.... but, for real porque!

And while I'm using my spanglish on you I'm gonna jib jab a bit about how much I would LOVE to be fluent in Spanish. I would say I have a high-intermediate level of conversational Spanish, but in all honesty I should already be fluent. I've had way to many years of instruction to not be. But alas, I didn't decide to apply myself in this area until it was too late. However, I must say, after working along side native speakers for 3 years -- there is a WHOLE lot a book cannot teach you. So many times I asked my Spanish speaking friends at work to explain to me "the rule" to conjugate and they just laughed. And just like piano theory, I don't really care about rules on paper -- I like to hear and do, not see and and do brain teasers. That's just how my brain works. (My sister and my husband on the other hand...)

When we went to Honduras two years ago my biggest prayer from my supporters was for my Spanish. And man did God answer. I communicated in ways I had no power to on my own. It might sound weird, but a big reason I want to be fluent is because I think God will surely use it. I don't know how -- but there is an opportunity out there just waiting for me. I can feel it.

I'm praying for a door to open for a local conversation partner. There is a program that will match you with a native Spanish speaker. You spend two hours together a week -- one in Spanish and one in English so you both learn. Every time I try to sign up it is full. In the mean time I'll just keep saying random things to be people in Spanish and talking and singing in Spanish to Magnolia as much as possible. I tell a mean Spanish 3 Little Bears...

For some reason I really want a Kindle. However, I don't deserve one. I NEVER finish a book. I just am not a big reader -- or even a little reader. I'm more of a once in a blue moon when the spirit hits me reader. And a lot of times, that spirit doesn't last me through a whole book.

Not since my sister got glasses when she was 5 have glasses been so big (all the better to see you with my dear)!! I wore this outfit the other day forgetting that I would be standing in front of 40ish people to give a speech of sorts... I tell you one thing, no one can say they didn't see me!! The pictures don't do the shirt justice, but believe me when I say that this shirt is as neon as they come. If anyone is going camping in the woods anytime soon and you want to make sure no hunters accidentally shoot at you, let me know and I'll let you borrow my shirt. I don't think I've ever had such a bright shirt -- I've always acted on the belief that such bright hues are reserved for those with much darker complexions. But I love wearing this shirt. It makes me feel rather cheery! (although, I do also inevitably end up singing John Mayer "neon" all day).

Now a neon shirt is not something you can wear everyday... what I do wear almost everyday are my new sandals courtesy of Fabulous on a Dime. These are the Camel Zig Zag Knit sandals (they also come in coral) and they are super comfortable. One thing I particularly appreciate about them is that although they do have a working buckle on the outside they also zip up the back. I hate having to muddle with tiny buckles so with the zipper you can just leave them buckled and quickly get them on and off. A neutral camel color, woven chevron pattern, easy on and off, and priced on a dime budget -- um, hello - love them!

What I love about Fab is that they have all the trends I love at fraction of the designer costs without skimping on quality.

Magnolia has officially been part of the "real world" longer than she was a part of the "mommy's tummy world!" So today I share with you 9 things I've learned in 9 months...

1. God made dirt and dirt don't hurt:

I spent the first 2 or 3 months of M's life very concerned with dirt and germs. I wouldn't let kids near her and I wouldn't let her on bare floor. Hand sanitizer abounded. I'm quite over that.

2. Don't cry over spilt milk / Don't make an ant hill into a mountain:

I used to get upset/worry when M would spit up after eating. But, duh, babies spit up! And they do so many other things that are 100% normal. It is so easy to be anxious with a new little one. With her first cough I quickly saw pneumonia in the future. I finally learned that 99% of the time - a cough is just a cough and spit up is just spit up.

3. A place for everything and everything in its place:

When Magnolia first started crawling I asked my small group to pray that I would be better at house cleaning. I drop bobby pins or track in little leaves or drop pieces of paper when opening the mail without even thinking about it. When Magnolia started crawling I realized our floor was riveted with landmines. Baby proofing a house is a full time job & It is only of the good Lord's mercy that my baby hasn't choked!

4. Big girls don't cry:

I'm a big girl (and yes, I of course am allowed and do cry) but, when little M gets injured I need to be the calm in the storm and kiss the boo boo. When Magnolia slipped in the tub and got a black eye I literally was a fraction of a second from a complete melt down. But then I realized I need to gather myself and be there for her - it wasn't about me.

5. There's no place like home:

Traveling with a babe is quite the ordeal. Where David and I could make a weekend trip with just one bag when you add in Magnolia we have - carseat, stroller, pack-n-play, baby bedding, diapers, baby food, toys, blankets, books, multiple clothes changes, sound machine... and inevitably, she never quite sleeps as well. Of course we love our weekend trips to see family, but whenever we get home, the three of us let out a big sigh - "we're home!"

6. Don't sweat the small things:

Magnolia takes lots of little tumbles and falls lately. And a lot of them come with a little whimper. But we've learned to hold ourselves back and not run to her aid at every mishap and to give her a second to take care of things herself. If we run to help her she thinks it is more serious than it is -- but if we give her a second, she brushes herself off and goes about her mischief. She can be quite the drama queen sometimes and I've learned that I don't always need to be a part of the charade.

7. Sleeping like a baby:

You start to get used to strange hours or interrupted sleep. I wonder when this saying turned into something meaning deep & restful? While Magnolia is a pretty good sleeper and mostly sleeps through the night, she'll go through different phases that are not as restful for mom and dad. Just las month she was getting up at 5am sharp everyday. Funnily enough on days like that I still find the energy I need. God gives all three of us just enough (which is all we need) for each day.

8. A house that prays together stays together:

One of my favorite times of the day is bed time (especially so when M puts up no objections) when we put her down in her crib and pray out loud for her.

9. I wish I was an octopus (okay, I know that isn't a common phrase)

Don't feel I really need to explain this one that much -- but with a little busy bee cruiser about to walk on her own, wouldn't 8 arms be quite nice?!!

M's 9 month tid-bits:

she has two teeth

nurses 4-5 times a day & has 3 solid food meals

weighs 20lbs

pulls up on everything & walks circles around the coffee table

laughs a lot - especially at our dog Oscar

currently has her first ear infection (and loves her medicine)

favorite toys: a stuffed bunny named Jelly & a panda bear named Cuddle

officially calls out for MaMa!

when all else fails give her a spoon to play with and she is happy

loves the sounds of the outdoors

can climb down off the couch by herself

she has her own phone (an old red unserviced cell phone of mine)

wears clothing size 9, 9-12mo

still loves bath time

East Nashville -- my neighborhood, among other things, is very colorful! The above houses are just a tiny selection of the rainbow of exterior paint colors you'll find while cruising through the east side and I love it! Color blocking in bright hues is so in right now & perhaps East Nashville houses started the trend?? Anywhoo -- this outfit post is inspired by these two houses from down the street...

Inspired by this, this, this, & this pin, I set out to make a few props for my twin sister's upcoming October farm wedding...

The prints that I hung in the frames were made by the beautiful and talented Jessi of Naptime Diaries. A while back I gave her some song lyrics and she did the rest (The song is a Drew Holcomb & the Neighbors favorite - "I like to be with me when i'm with you"). Excluding the many bottles of wine we've had over the years to collect/save the corks, the suitcase which i already had, and the prints from Jessi, all these projects combined cost me less than $20. I'm not sure if any of them will actually make an appearance at the nuptials, but they made a fun gift and I think she enjoyed them. Look how cute my sis & future bro-in-law are:

I am way excited to be partnering with Free Range Chick to give away a custom pair of Toms (up to a $70 value). When I first came across Shanti's etsy shop I just had to have a pair. I had never had a pair of Tom's before and I thought what better way to wear a popular shoe than to wear a pair that no one else has the same of! From prom date proposals, to bridesmaid shoes, to hunger game quotes --- this girl can turn an already incredible shoe idea into an even better one!

When Shanti offered to make me a pair I decided to go with lyrics from one of David's and my favorite songs - Shady Grove by Doc Watson (a nice blue grass guitar jig). Shanti makes it really easy to customize right down to the location and font of the embroidery. Before she does the stitching she sent me over a mock up just to make sure it was exactly what I wanted and then before I know it they were at my door step. The first pic below are my feetsies (thats baby talk for feet) & the second picture is some Hunger Games inspired Toms that I think are just awesome!

Q: Where are your from and what is your favorite thing about growing up there?

A: I was born and raised in Burlington, Iowa. Although we lived in the country, daily we would go into town and bounce back and forth between Grandma's and Aunt Carolyn's house. My two cousins, sister, and I would spend our days playing kickball in the yard, building snow forts, taking endless bike rides, and building some pretty awesome forts out of refrigerator boxes that Grandpa would surprise us with every once in awhile!

Q: When did you know you loved crafting/art?

A: When I was about 18 months my Grandma would sit me in my highchair with two pin cushions, and for hours I would entertain myself by transferring the straight pins from one pin cushion to the other and then back again. From there, I took a pretty natural progression into sewing and then, shortly after, into cross-stitch and embroidery. My Grandma was my mentor for all things sewing and needlework related, but my mom and I would spend hours making wreaths, basket weaving, etc.

Q: Favorite tv show & favorite band/artist?

A: OH! I love these questions. My favorite TV show is hands down Gilmore Girls. I adore the small town banter, the familiarity of Luke's Diner, and the adorable Bed and Breakfast, The Dragonfly Inn, that Lorelai and her best friend Sookie run. My friends joke that in my dreamworld I would just recreate Starshollow.

Ok, now onto my favorite band/artist. I honestly can not just pick one, so you get three! 1 - Mute Math. 2 - John Mayer. Where The Light Is is my "go to" album. 3 - Sarah Jarosz. Two of my favorite tunes are "I Can't Love You Now" and the instrumental track "Mansinneedof."

Q: Something most people don't know about you?

A: Well all of my family and close friends know this, but something a little unique about me is that I was raised vegetarian. I am 28 and still have not tasted a single piece of meat.

Q: Any advice for those looking to start an etsy shop and blog?

A: I do not know if I have been around long enough to start dishing out advice, my blog and Etsy store are still less than one year old! With that being said, I was one of the lucky ones that had pretty quick success, and was able to quit my "day job" just 4 months after launching my Etsy store and blog. I think it is most important to always have top-notch products on your Etsy store, and a professional look to your blog with quality content. I think with both Etsy and a blog you need to assess your community or competition and make sure there is a need for what you are offering. If there is a need, fill it, and see what happens!

I am having a super hard time knowing what day/month/season/year it is. Somewhere between having a baby and having such a warm winter I just got complete vertigo when it comes to time. Not only was it the warmest winter I've ever lived through, but we jumped straight from winter into 80+ degree so called spring! I think I changed my closet out a whole month earlier than normal. And then after a week or two (or was it three?) of pre-mature sweating, we dropped back down to some normal spring tempatures in the 60's.

I enjoy my spring/summer clothes a lot more than my cold weather wardrobe. Plus, since I was super preggers all spring and summer of last year I haven't worn any of these clothes in nearly 2 years! Almost like having new clothes... almost. But what is totally new are a few spring/summer transition staples I found at Karen Kane - the coral striped cardi above + a couple other beauties I'll share another time. If you have never checked out KK you need to pop on over -- three words to describe their line: chic, sophisticated, polished, and feminine. Yes, I know, that was 4 words, but I couldn't help it.

First Easter

Oh, what a GLORIOUS day it was! SO thankful for such a gracious Savior. We had a great first Easter with our little M. She loved her Easter basket. I didn't even have to fill the eggs with anything -- they were exciting enough empty (just like the tomb! hehe)! We did give her some graduates teething cookies for the first time and she was so funny -- she really felt like a big kid and kept looking at us like, "realy? i am eating a cookie??" After church and Easter Basket fun we drove to my parents to join them and my sister & fiance, plus our Aunt from Florida for a late lunch. A great great day!

Well, there you have it! - this is what I wore last week. I didn't dress up for blog pictures - this is just what I wore in real life. Some days are don't fix your hair and put on a hat days (the same hat two days in a row). And some days are just tshirt and jeans days. I basically wear the same jewelry every day regardless of the outfit and rarely wear my hair down. Somedays, thanks to baby vomit or thrown pureed peas, I wear more than one outfit. Somedays I stay in sweaty running clothes all day... but this is WIWLW

Mommy Review: Svantje Children's Wear

I thought I about died and gone to heaven when I first stumbled upon the etsy shop, Svantje -- the kids' wear is just adorable and unlike anything you can find commercially here in the states. My sweet Magnolia was honored with the opportunity to tryout her very own pair of wool felt shoes courtesy of Antje, the woman behind this creative shop! They have been the perfect shoes as M transitioned into a mobile bunny. One thing I love about wool is how well it regulates body heat -- seems impossible to get too hot or too cold. The felt in these shoes is really soft and not itchy at all. Sometimes M even wore them without socks. The elastic band keeps the shoe secure and the tag in the back makes them easy to pull on. The stitching is immaculately done.

To be honest, I'm a little jealous of Magnolia's sweet shoes from Europe! -- Yes, Europe!... Antje is from Berlin! A mother herself (she has a 22month old baby girl), Antje's line is influenced by both her culture and her daughter. More than just shoes, Svantje features hats, dresses, accessories, and more.

Q: Where are you from and what is your favorite thing about living there?

A: I originally come from Rostock which is a city at the north eastern baltic sea. I grew up there and was 8 years old when the Wall came down. For more than 2 years now I live in Berlin, together with my boyfriend and our little daughter. We live in Berlin-Kreuzberg which is quite famous and is one of the best-known areas of Berlin. On one hand it is the home of the largest community of turkish immigrants outside Turkey itself and also home of Berlin's Punk Rockers and the world famous punk rock club SO-36. It is exactly this cultural diversity I like about Kreuzberg. But the times are a changing and as rents getting higher and higher lots of immigrant move forward to outer districts and a younger, also international folks move to Kreuzberg. It is now full of Scandinavians, Brits and Americans - people from all over the world. So it will always be the cultural heart of Berlin. And the place on earth where Döner Kebap was invented ;-)

Q: Favorite junk food?

A: All kinds of pasta - if that counts as junk food. In this term I would say: Gözleme. Kind of a turkish crèpe which spinach and feta cheese. I love to eat that while I buy fabrics on the Turkish Market on Tuesdays and Fridays.

Q: How does being a mom influence your shop?

A: First, it is the base. If I were not a mother right now I would probably never have started a kidswear label. I was part of a fashion label before I gave birth. But this broke up due to my new life. And nowadays I can say: Luckily it happened!

Second, I have to work very efficiently. During the day I only have 6 to 7 hours where Tilda is in the kindergarten. This is the time where I sew and cut. As I work at home I always have to look after my scissors and needles and stuff. Often I return to my desk after bedtime and concentrate more on my online work.

All my designs are inspired by Tilda, my daughter, and our life together. When I created something new she is the first to try it. She always has to test all my items if they really work out. So on the week ends we go out in parks and playgrounds and Tilda wears the new stuff I designed the week before. We make photos and have fun. And in the end - if everything works out fine - a new Svantje outfit is born and probably soon online available.

Q: Any hidden talents or other crafting skills not shown in your shop?

A: During my pregnancy I discovered the art of crochet. That is my hobby, actually. But right now I am kind of stuck with a little fox I started a few months ago. I have just not enough time.

Nashville Fashion Week 2012

I was so pumped to get to attend Nashville Fashion Week for the second year in a row. Not only did I just go, but one of my Nashville bf's and I went in VIP style courtesy of her super sweet in-laws who helped make the whole week beautiful (Big Events). We got to get swept in before the crowd and sat front row at the end of the runway. I felt like a celebrity. It was... the bomb! (man, i never have crowd tired of that hip 90's idiom. but for real. it was the bomb dot com)

The first four designers were (pictured in order above): Jamie and the Jones, Kal Rieman, Sylvia Hiesel, and Magid Bernard -- all of them were simply fabulous.

The music was awesome. I'll be honest, it made me want to jump up onto the runway and strut my stuff. Since I was at the end of the runway I was also serenaded with a subtle click click click of camera shutters. There was some serious paparazzi in attendance!

And the show stopper/ breath taker of the evening, designer Randi Rahm:

I can't tell you how many times you heard a collective gasp from the audience during this show. Each piece basically blew my mind. I can't even put into words how much I loved this line. The details were just ridiculous. Every dress that came down the aisle instantly sent me into a fantasy world dreaming about where I would wear something so beautiful. My dreams ranged from Downtown Abbey (the jeweled neutral cap sleeved tiered dress above) to a Taylor Swift video (the gold strapless beaded tool dress) and so much more.

And to end the night...The after party!
