Travel Review: The Gallatin Hotel

Big swanky hotels are fun. They are full of optional add-ons and good people watching. Paid for conveniences. Valet. Maybe even signature cocktails and gift shops.

The Gallatin is a different experience. It beats to it own beautiful drum and approaches vacation stays in a whole new way. It’s not a big chain system, there isn’t a concierge, no room service, or even an elevator. You’ll find cozy rooms with twin beds and even bunks. There are shared spaces for all guests, lots of color and all though its not your typical hotel, that doesn’t mean they are sacrificing comfort.

Being a converted church building from 1925 sets The Gallatin apart at first glance. With a deeper look you’ll find that what really sets it apart is the mission of providing for the underserved in the community giving the majority of profits to local causes. Partnering with Room in the Inn, ShowerUp, People Loving Nashville, and Nashville Rescue Mission, stays at The Gallatin have provided over 100,000 warm meals, beds, and showers to those experiencing homelessness in Nashville.

Recently, my twin sister and I stayed in Room 111, a double bunk suite. This room had two sets of bunks with full size mattresses. The beds were comfortably firm with quality linens and pillows. A large yellow velvety curtain separated the living area with colorful couch and arm chair and mounted flat screen tv. The suite also included a kitchenette with mini-fridge and a full size bathroom with double sinks (and a dyson hair dyer and clothes steamer!). Some other key amenities included a sound machine and portable fan.

Upon arriving, each guest is given their own access code. There is private parking for registered cars. The Gallatin is set off of a busy road, but I was pleasantly surprised by how quiet the whole space was. Even without hotel staff present, there were so many welcoming touches. We especially loved the complimentary local snacks in our room, the hot beverage bar in the lobby, the sparkling water on tap, and photo booth! There are also luggage lockers if you arrive early for check-in.

Our room also had two drink tokens for The Lucky Duck Lounge, a dive bar situated under the attached event space (Emerson Hall). My sister and I both enjoyed The Lucky Duck - lots of drinks on tap and other drinks and food choices. The service was friendly and speedy and decor was fun and nostalgic. The bar is open to the public, but hotel spaces are off limits without guest code and there was no noise in the hotel areas from the bar.

Some things to consider before booking your stay: there is no guest elevator. If stairs are not an option for you, you’ll want to make sure you book on the main level. The Gallatin is in East Nashville which is very accessible to downtown events. My sister and I went to a concert at Bridgestone Arena which is about a 13 minute drive sans traffic. An Uber drive home after the concert (peek ride share hours) was $40.

There are lots of great eating spots near by. For breakfast I headed less than 5 minutes down the road to Hearts where you’ll find all day food and drink. There’s also East Park Donuts & Coffee and Sky Blue Cafe (try the pbj stuffed french toast!).

I went for a girls night for this stay, but The Gallatin is definitely a family friendly place, and I would 100% book them again and bring the family. The prices range based on room size but all are very affordable ranging from $130 for a cozy full room to $355 (combining a suite with attached room sleeping 6-8 people). Alvies Boots & Flops for Summer

My mom (who just retired, yay mom!! hi!!) has an amazing pair of black western boots that she has had for years. They are perfectly soft and worn in, she's had them resoled and they are just perfect. I've been on the hunt for my own pair of black boots. The thing about a good pair of boots that fit just right -- they just kind of become part of you and your style and work with any look, not just country farm life. And thats the thing about me. I'm a little farm. A little city. And at 38 (today!) I'm 100% at a place that my style only has to be approved by me and what makes me feel good!

In my search for my own pair of epic boots, I found Alvies on instagram. I gave them a follow and just sort of sat back and watched for a bit. Loved learning about who they are and what they are about. Loved the selection of quality leather boots for men and women. Their branding is amazing. Pretty soon I just couldn't help myself and was so ready to get my hands on a pair. And not just boots... y'all, they are boots AND flops. Like, the good waterproof leather last forever wear anywhere anytime kind of flip flops. So between the boots and flops, I really am set for the summer.

I got the Rio Grande Boots in Irish Wake and the The Lake Austin Flip Flops in the Backyard Tiki x Hill Country Rain.

Boots can be a bit nerve wracking to pick out the right size, but they have an awesome sizing robot helps you find the right fit based on other shoe brands/style/sizes you wear and what your instep is etc. Mine fit perfect and are so comfortable. You will think I'm crazy, but I wore these the day after I got them to a concert. Not a single blister or rub the whole time. They felt great and I know they will just conform to my foot with more wear. The flops are no different - comfortable from the get go.

I ended up with a size 8 boot (they say size down a full size unless you have a high instep. boots I usually wear a size 8 or 8.5) and they are great! Flops order a size up they say, so I got a 9 and they are perfect.

Blue Tansy Serum DIY

A great change in beauty products is happening, hopefully an ever growing revolution in clean ingredients and accessibility. For now though it still seems that a lot of these products available on shelves are still pretty expensive. That's why I've really starred to enjoy DIY beauty products where I can control the ingredients and feel well assured of their sourcing.

I've shared about Eden's Garden oils before (check out this article), and in this post I'm going to show you my take on the popular Blue Tansy Serum -- you know those cute little dropper bottles you've seen around social media! I got all my oils and carrier oils through Eden's Garden. I love this company for my oils because they are priced fairly and their transparency of their purity and sourcing helps me know I'm getting the best. They've also been voted best non-mlm oil company and are woman owned and operated.

For this project I snagged these glass dropper bottles on Amazon. They are reusable and I'll use the extra ones as gifts or for other DIYs. You could also mix up these serums and sell them to make it even more cost efficient!

Why Blue Tansy? Some of the great benefits of this oil include being anti-inflamatory (think about fighting blemishes), antioxidants, moisturizing & soothing your skin, and neutralizing redness.

There are several different recipes you can mix up with Blue Tansy oil based on our skin type, sensitivities, or goals. In addition to the Blue Tansy I added Rose, Frankincense, and Turmeric. I was looking for oils that would help even skin tone, fight sun damage, tone & cleanse, anti-inflammatory, soothe & moisturize, and give a bit of glow. Depending on your bottle size, you really only need a just a couple drops of each. I used a 15ml bottle & did about 5 drops blue tansy, 3 drops rose, 4 drops of frankincense, and 4 drops of turmeric. I filled the rest with jojoba oil and just a tiny bit of witch hazel to help with emulsification.

I also this week made some personal fragrance. I love rose and I love woody & warm scents. I mixed together Vetiver, Amber Oud, and Rose (just a couple drops, its potent!) in a roller bottle. I filled with Jojoba oil and a small splash of witch hazel again & easy peasy I've got my own perfume that no one else has and is also clean, alcohol free, and packs other essential oil benefits.

Feeling Christmas

I was looking through an old journal this morning and decided to share this entry form 6 years ago as I still find myself relating to it and think maybe some of y'all might too.

Oh, Christmas. What are you supposed to feel like? I know it’s not about sentiment. What is it that gets so disappointing? I’m misplacing my hope. My weariness takes over. I’m moving too fast. Attempting to do so much. Wasting my quiet in the wrong places. Why is there such a struggle to feel Christmas? Experience it. I know some of my longing is good. My desperate need for a Savior. Here. Now. real. Emmanuel. God with us. But my struggle is also tinged with the doubt that the Christ baby isn’t enough.

I get so angry at the popular “all I need is Jesus and a little bit of coffee…” But here I am fighting that all I need is a Christ baby and a Christmas tree and cold weather and cookies and good cheer… I’ll stop there but my list of “ands” is much longer I sorely confess. So much longer.

There is no and. I need Jesus. Period. Christmas is about Jesus. Without thought of the weather or festivities He came. And every day he comes to me - in al my heart’s poor weather and lack of cheer. I leave out no cookies for him, no notes of adoration or thanksgiving. And still, He stands at the door and knocks. Jesus is enough. All I need and more than I can ask or imagine.

Oh, Precious Savior - change my heart. Fill me with everlasting Joy. May I feel Christmas. Not the Christmas of trees, snow, and bows. But feel you. The joy of Your salvation & the hope that your promises are true. That as sure as you came that first night and as sure as you died and rose again, that you will come back and make all things new.

Well, between chasing 3 kids, Covid-19 slow down, and bit of a crazy pregnancy with some complications -- maternity photos were diy this go-around. If David isn't in the photo, he's behind the camera and the rest our friend and neighbor snapped for us.

I've worn this dress now for three pregnancies. Its from Isabella Oliver and it has held up so well. I won't be holding on to the majority of my maternity clothes, but this dress and probably my overalls I've become attached too and I'll box up and save for the girls.

In these photos I have on my new mini tag necklace from Able. It has all four of my baby's initials on it and I've loved wearing it every day as I anxiously await my new baby's arrival.

Officially in my third trimester with baby number 4 and this pregnancy is number 3 of enjoying style staples from Soon Maternity. These two looks were just what I was searching for. I had a really hard time finding straight leg denim that wasn't a soft stretchy material as I really wanted maternity clothes that felt like my regular favorites. I ordered and returned several pairs from different retailers and these rigid denim jeans were just what I was looking for. I was really missing some of my go-to favorites when they stopped fitting which included a lot of my linen clothes for spring and summer. Could not be more excited about this linen top which is cut to fit post pregnancy and even has peek-a-boo nursing openings under the ruffle.

And overalls?? How have I waited until pregnancy number 4 to own a pair. So comfortable and functional. And this pair has an adjustable waist line for your growing belly. So genius.

I first fell in love with Lotta clogs when I was pregnant with my second. I needed some sandal like spring shoes that offered more support than flats. I started looking at clogs, but just was not okay spending well over $100 and actually found Lotta From Stockholm and purchased my first pair through Amazon. I bought the the low peep toe clogs in tan (scroll down to the last photo) and wore them dressed up and dressed down. I basically didn't take them off.

Since then, and you know this if you've been around this blog a while, that I have grown into a full on clog fanatic. There is a clog for every occasion and I have found them to be a reliable shoe for long lasting comfort without sacrificing style.

My newest pair are a new style called the Lotta Sling. They are on a high wood base and fit true to your european size. I wear a US 8 and euro 38. If you are in between sizes, size up. When ordering for the first time make sure to use their sizing guide. I've worn a 38 in all their styles excluding the eva sling in which I suggest sizing up 1 full size. Trunk Club vs. Stitch Fix
Over the past several years you've seen what feels like countless post about Stitch Fix on this blog. But sometimes you outgrow good things for better things. Here's what I love about Trunk Club...

Real and regular interaction with your stylist. Before you even schedule your first trunk you get to start messaging with your stylist. You can send pictures of yourself and style, ask questions, and plan together of how to get the best trunk. Once your stylist packs your first trunk - before sending it, she will show you what is inside. You get to give feedback and make changes to your trunk before it ships. Example: she packed me my requested Fjallraven and I got to decide on another color. I also got to request to try a different style of Birkenstock than what she had packed.

Newer more familiar items. Unlike stitch fix where they stock up on a lot of last season items, with Trunk Club you are getting what is currently selling at Nordstrom. You aren't being asked to pay full price for last year's surplus items. You also aren't potentially getting obscure "boutique" brands the that you are unsure of the quality. It's a very wet overcast cold winter day - but I'm dreaming about spring and summer adventures. Striped linen dresses, bare legs, and clogs. I shared these photos a good while back via instagram, but had to share them here. One of the most fun parts of being a girl mom is dressing alike and sharing the things I love with my daughters. Magnolia certainly gets a thrill out of it. With matching Lotta from Stockholm clogs, I can feel great knowing she is wearing a shoe that is good for her feet and body and is comfortable and of course stylish.

I've found that the slip on clogs without the back are hard for my girls to fit because they have pretty high insteps, but man a girlfriend of mine has some for her little girl and they are perfection. Sizing for the women's shoe - I always go with my normal euro size and they fit and feel great.

ethichal and sustainable brands with stitch fix

As I move more and more towards taking the switch away from fast fashion, I've been wondering if my love for Stitch Fix might be something I would have to leave. I decided to put them to the test and see if they could fulfill a request for a fix of only sustainable and ethical slow fashion brands. I gave no other requests for type or style and just relied on my tried and trued stylist that I've used for a few years now.

As I am coming to find out, the words "sustainable" or "ethical" in the fashion world are similar to when you hear the words "natural" or "organic" in the food world. There is a diverse usage of these words and when it comes to fashion it ranges from brands that give back or have positive missions, to environmental impact, fair wages, and size inclusivity. A brand can focus on one of these and be poor in the other areas. What I am thankful to see are companies who are trying and are transparent in their efforts.

In my fix:

In this fix I received a bag from ABLE, a company near and dear to my heart that supports women locally and globally by providing sustainable wages and healthy work environments. They are also working to transform the fashion industry by calling companies to publish their wages, not their average wage, but their lowest.

Warp + Weft was a new brand to me. They are a size inclusive company for men, women, and children with an aim 'to change the industry in every way to represent the inclusive, aware and environmentally conscious customer " with a commitment to fair wages, reasonable hours, and positive working conditions. Also, becasue their operations are vertical, they cut out the middle man and can sell slow fashion denim at fast fashion prices. I'm really excited to get to know this company more.

TOMs is a brand I think a lot of us know. The buy a pair give a pair model. I actually don't know a whole lot about their manufacturing practices and have had trouble finding that information alone through internet searches. Similarly is the brand Good hYOUman. This brand does a lot of giving back with collaborations with some great foundations and are all about creating a "community of good hYOUmans," I just don't know much about their behind the scenes community. So both of these companies have good substance for sure, I just don't know anything about wether they have a positive economical or environmental impact outlook.

NYDJ is the only brand I received in this fix that I had a hard time finding any information about in regards to their employment or production. My stylist said she did some research and found that they are working hard to partner with their vendors and suppliers to end slavery and trafficking - but I think this is actually a statement that they are compliant with the California Supply Chain Act (2010). However this is a company that is "for women - all shapes, all sizes, all women" and provides sizes 00 - 28. So, this could be a company that is doing all the things right behind the scenes, but the transparency just isn't there. My current personal rule of thumb is that if you can't easily find information, it's probably one to steer clear of.

So all in all, it seems like Stitch Fix is taking some steps towards more brands with a commitment to ethical and sustainable impacts. But in my opinion, they aren't quite there if you are in a place that you are only wanting to build a wardrobe of ethical and sustainable items. My tips would be to make it clear to your stylist that you want companies in your box that fit your standards. Let them know what specific ethical brands you already love (and also the brands you don't love - ones you know aren't playing fair and clean in the fashion world). Also, help stitch fix grow in this area by requesting transparent brands who are conscious of the impact their employment and products have on people and the environment.

goody bags reimagined

Though I don't do it often enough, I love giving gifts! For an early birthday celebration (I'm turning 35!) I had a small handful of my closest and dearest women over for a slumber party - and as I planned I started imagining and remembering the birthday parties of our youth, which specifically brought to mind the excitement of a good party favor. The best had stickers, some sort of fun colorful accessory (slap bracelets!), maybe some bubbles, and of course candy!

With the help of some friends from Lindsay Letters, Able, Eden's Garden, Oil + Honeycomb, and Sconza Chocolates, this is how I reimagined those bags to treat my guests:

The party was planned to be a picnic out in my field with blankets, throw pillows, twinkling lights and tiki torches, however the weather had other plans and we got to stay cozy indoors together in my house (have I mentioned that we live in what will eventually be our garage as we wait to build our house?) as the rains came down. Even so, it was the most perfect night and I was so thankful to take a moment to celebrate the goodness of friendship.

We ate and drank well, laughed, and enjoyed some intentional rest together. We eventually succumbed to sleep and woke up late (8:30! wow, thats late for a momma of littles) and drank all the coffee and enjoyed our farm eggs and my husband's rustic sourdough. By the time the last guest drove over our creek and headed home, I was already dreaming up the next opportunity to bring them all back again.

As busy moms with kiddos of different ages and varying jobs from staying at home, self employed, education, and corporate it took some work to find a time we could all get together. It's also not lost on me that it took some magic and sacrifice for my friends to make it work to leave their families for the night and come celebrate with me. Y'all. It's worth it. Take some time to gather your people close and give thanks for one another. Shower them with hospitality the best you can and just revel in the goodness of it.

It doesn't have to be fancy or instagramable. My next one will probably consist of pizza boxes and tubs of ice cream under the stars. Take some time to dream up who you might invite and what you could do together (I highly suggest a slumber party, why leave that in childhood?). And don't forget the goody bag!

Essential Oils after an MLM / Eden's Garden

It's been a handful of years now since my first amazon order of a very inexpensive essential oil. I was seeking alternative relief for cluster headaches. It was perhaps the opposite of relief. After that I spent a long time being a large sceptic of essential oils until eventually I decided to give it a real go after watching how they had transformed the every day health of my high school friend's family. While I by far haven't given up traditional medicine in our household, I'm so thankful for what I learned about oils under her guidance -- I am more equipped and better minded on how to turn to oils to aid in my family's health and home needs.

If you've been on this blog in the last couple years you know that my real journey in learning to love essential oils took place while participating in a multi level marketing company - and while I do believe those oils are of great quality and though I do fully support those who are able to participate in mlm oil companies - especially those who are so generously not just taking care of their families but also equipping and supporting others as well, I slowly grew out of that part of my oil journey and became interested in other retail companies. My main reasons for the switch being affordability, time, and my understanding of the different farms used.

After talking with several other oil users and doing online research I zeroed in on Eden's Garden Essential Oils for aromatherapy uses after checking out their about section through their website. Reading through their E.D.E.N.S (Effective, Dedicated, Educated, Natural, Safe) pledge and reading about their process and history, I felt really comforted by their level of transparency as well as their full desire for educated consumers (I went through all of their FAQs - so informative). Also, their pricing was a big indicator to me that they were an oil that was worth a try. I will alway be turned off by a cheap oil from a big box store as well as some of the over pricing of mlm oils. The prices of Eden's Garden cut out the middle man and you are still paying not a cheap price, but the price for something good that you can trust to aid and not harm.

As I am still using up a large stock of oils in my cabinet, I am slowly adding different EG oils as well as some other beauty products (I love their perfume!) to my collection. I love the way my friend Lindsay (@lindsayletters) sees the world and expresses what she sees through her art and her words. We first met through our mutual affection for ABLE and briefly enjoyed a season of both living in Nashville. She is one of those great hearts that are creative and compassionate and intentional and it shows through in her work.

At Lindsayletters.co (her last name isn't Letters, but I definitely have her in my phone as Lindsay Letters) you can find The Art Bar -- a brightly colored cozy place where you can perfectly customize art for your walls or for gifts. My kids still talk about gorging themselves with good Nashville donuts while wearing pjs and love cozying up with their snuggle blankets that they got to take home (she also sells some gorgeously fun textiles)!

I love having a canvas from Lindsay on our walls. It makes this season of living in what will (eventually) be our garage even sweeter and cozier and it was definitely a bonus when my recent girlfriend celebration picnic got rained out and we got and have it as a backdrop inside!

I usually leave the art to David, but sometimes the inspiration hits and you just have to go for it. We have been loving snacking on these new Lemoncello Chocolate Almonds from Sconza Chocolates. Remember these clog boots (see blog post) I had on repeat this past fall and winter? They were so comfortable and versatile and they made me fall in love with Troentorp clogs (who have been around since 1907!). For spring and summer I've picked out these nude leather slide ons and I am equally in love. What I love about Troentorp clogs and one of the things that sets them apart are their soles. Minted tips and tricks + Easy DIY Card Keepsake

For the last 6 Christmases I have used Minted to make our family Christmas cards. I love how easy it is to pick out and customize a card. Plus - I've been able to, aside from postage, basically send out Christmas cards for free. Here's how!

Free Minted Christmas cards --

First -- Here is $25 off your first order! Just by using this link to create a new Minted account. Click here.

Second -- Shop early discounts. If you don't have your pictures made yet but don't want to miss out on a discount you can still pick and purchase your card design and save it to be made later when your photos are ready. You can still edit everything about it. The only thing you can't change is the design.
Current promo discounts are always in a banner on top of the Minted landing page.

Third -- Postcards. If your budget is tight or if you just have a million friends you must send those cards to, post cards are the least expensive option. Plus postage is cheaper.

Fourth -- Look for cards with the option of Express Service. This will get you another $5 discount. What this service does is skips the step of Minted proofing your card for you. So double check your spelling and address etc. and save $.

Design tips --

My favorite design tip for creating Christmas cards with Minted -- most parts of all the designs are customizable. So for example, if you find a card that says "Christmas Cheer" at the top -- you can change it to "Christ Reigns" or "Crazy Kids" or "First Christmas." So if you fall in love with a layout or color style of the card, but don't love the wording - you can totally make it your own. If you see our card up top that says Wildernerss Homestead on it and a scripture on the bottom it was originally shown as "Our New Home" and we added the scripture line where the new address was shown.

And I suppose this falls under design tips too - free recipient addressing! Saves time and saves those of you with "doctor's handwriting" from having to scribble.

Easy Christmas Card Keepsake DIY --

Once I started making our cards with Minted I became obsessed. I keep ALL of them. Every year. Easiest way is with a whole punch and binder rings. Pretty self-explanatory but so fun and such a treasure to our family.

I’ve been a smart watch girl for the last two years and have become quite attached to the constant connectedness it brings. But I felt the need to a detach more - as a way to be more present and appreciate time. I love love love my Nacre Lune watch for this reason. The simplicity of the design is just a brush of fresh air and rest. Classic and timeless. An actually wrist piece and not a blinking computer.

I have the Lune in stainless steel and alternate between the leather bands in sand and black. There are other face bodies that feature pearl hour markers embellished cases. Bands are super easy to securely change out. Love this from Nacre's about page:

If you've seen my instagram lately, you've probably noticed I've had on these boots nearly every day. And if you've been around this blog long enough, you know I have a bit of a love affair with clogs! These boots have been perfect for fall so far. With dresses, with pants, wide leg crops - I've found them to go with just about anything. The base of these clog boots are alderwood and created for anatomical support and have a thick non-wood base for lasting comfort. Fall faves right here! They also come in a couple other colors and finishes too! Troentorp also has clogs for men, and I'm realllly thinking it might be time to bring David in on this most loved style of mine.
