Yet how does a musician read the rest? He counts the break with unwavering precision and plays his next note with confidence, as if no pause were eer there. God does not write the music of our lives without a plan. Our part is to learn the tune and not be discouraged during the resets. They are not to be slurred over or omitted, nor used to destroy the melody or to change the key. If we will look up, God Himself will count the time for us.”

Musical score with conductor’s baton

This Winter pause or rest, is being counted with PRECISION by our talented Conductor. In fact, without the rests in music the score would be nerve wracking and exhausting…confusing even if it is beautiful music. God is so wise and loving, He is into the details, I am amazed at the mystery of His perfect ways. As the Conductor He knows the score and we can trust Him to write the score of our lives using plenty of well timed rests that we need to embrace.

There are things to do in the Winter that we would never have time for in any other season. It is a season of waiting, a season of remembering the past and honoring it with the preserved harvest and a season of dreaming of the future by intentionally preparing for it.

Enjoying the Wildly Preserved – since the earth is not offering as many gifts in the ‘dead of Winter’ this is the time to relish the preserved harvest from last season. As Nature’s Wave rolls by with each season of wild offerings, it’s wise to preserve them at the height of their energy for year round use. Spending time pickling, fermenting, canning, dehydrating, jamming and jellying, blanching and freezing, drying leaves and flowers for stores of wild teas, extends abundance and wild blessings even through the Winter months. You can check out my video on Wild Food Storage here. Ride nature’s wave with me and I will show you what is on God’s Grocery store shelves in each season, how to gather it and how to prepare it. Here is a link to my class on Preserving the Wild Harvest.

2. Hiking Habit – find a path or a trail near you, on your land, at a nearby park and watch the trees, collect nature scraps (acorns, cones, twigs, anything that catches your attention), identify the seed skeletons of last year’s growth, observe animal tracks in the snow, watch and observe….everything! Hiking the same path day after day will help you pay close attention to the plants and trees as they morph with nature’s wave. Say ‘Good Morning’ to each tree, and plant, calling them by name to deepen your connection with each in all the seasons. It’s wonderful to have a several Hiking Habits – in a pasture, the woods, along the river, and of course your own back yard to discover ‘who’ likes to live in each eco system. Go outside in all weather to discover nature in all it’s forms. Hike your path in various times of day to see the casted shadows from the morning or late sun or to watch the sunrise.

I hope you enjoy these images. I cherish my time outside with Max during the winter months.

Sit Spot – this can be a park bench or a rocker on your porch, a boulder in the woods, or a tree you love to frequent. Go there every day, and just ‘be’. Nature has a way of stimulating all five of your senses with its many dimensions. I have many ‘sit spots’ but my favorite one is at in the loop of my Hiking Habit and is my destination for watching the sunrise, reading God’s Word, writing in my journal, praying, exercising, playing ball with Max, and always for the last 5 minutes I set my alarm and hold Max close and we just watch God’s handiwork. Sometimes we notice clouds float by, or shadows lengthen, or look for nuances and changes from day to day. And sometimes we just sit snug and listen. It is our habit no matter the weather.

Journal – I keep a journal in my backpack to record the gifts God gives me in His creation and to write the thoughts I have while just observing His handiwork. I also have many of these gifts ‘decorating’ our home and they all have a story. I will do an entire blog on some of my favorite gifts from God to me but just know that they are there all around, hidden in plain view. Ask the Lord for eyes to see and ears to hear, evidence of His love all around you and with in you. Then treasure these treasures and record them to ‘remember’.

In Quietness and rest is your strength

Nature-Deficit Disorder

Nature-Deficit Disorder is the very real multifaceted human costs of alienation from nature: diminished use of senses, attention difficulties, higher rates of physical and emotional illness. Nature Deficit Disorder or NDD was coined by author and naturalist, Richard Louv, in his bestselling book, Last Child in the Woods, published in 2005. Since 2005 the problem has only compounded with increased time spent indoors and on tech devices so that our culture is solidly built on the shifting sand of distraction, noise, being busy yet sedentary, and addiction to technology.

“Doctors are prescribing Eco Therapy to reduce anxiety and curb depression. “Take a Hike” has a new meaning as it is proven to reduce negative thoughts, boost creative problem solving, reduce ADHD symptoms and boost brain power. People who hike in nature enjoy better health and less stress.” The Japanese are cultivating public woodlands for Forest Bathing or Shinrin-yoku, and have seen significant improvement in the mental health of those who participate in this time honored practice. I call it a Hiking Habit, but it is more than merely hiking in nature, it is hiking with purpose on the same path every day.

Ahma called her pine forests, These Thy Woods.

How to begin

Find a path or a trail near you, on your land, in neighboring woods, or at a nearby park to begin this daily rhythm. Be sure to get permission if the land is not yours.

Observe the plants that grow along your path. You don’t have to know their names, just observe them growing and appreciate their beauty throughout the seasons. Note their stature, textures, aromas and leaf shapes. Watch the tree branches unfurl leaves from their terminal buds, or the flowers bloom morphing afterwards into fascinating seed pods storing the treasure of their life-giving seeds.

Become a nature detective….look for the obvious and the obscure. Ask God for eyes to see the evidence of His glory all around you. Fix your gaze at all levels: the ground, eye level, the crowns of the trees, the kaleidoscope of the ever changing clouds and the moods of the sky. Take pictures of whatever captures your eye. Identify the seed skeletons of last year’s growth, look for colors, textures, changes from day to day and keep an eye out for telltale tracks and prints in the mud or snow.

Gather nature scraps such as acorns, cones, twigs and grape tendril….gifts hidden in plain view), and, of course as a Wild Blessings student, you will want to identify all the wild edible plants that are along your chosen path. Be thoughtful in gathering the wild harvest so you can allow these wild edibles to flourish and reseed to promote more abundance next year. I’ve even brought the wild edible plants that I most treasure spotted along my Hiking Habits, spreading the life in seeds or transplants all around my mountain.

Hiking the same path day after day will help you pay close attention to the plants and trees as they morph with nature’s wave. Say ‘Good Morning’ to each tree, and plant, calling them by name to deepen your connection with them in every season. Just as you would not pass by a friend without acknowledging their presence give the same attention to the plants in order to know them better.

Over time you may wish to develop several Hiking Habits beyond your own back yard – in a pasture, the woods, along the river, in a swamp… to discover ‘who’ likes to live in what eco system.

Go outside in all weather to discover nature in all its forms. Hike your paths in various times of day: in the early morning before dawn, midday, sunset, and even in the dark. Sunrise is always a miracle to behold and it is fascinating to experience how the direction of the sun just over the horizon lengthens morning and late afternoon shadows. Learn to guess the time of day by where the sun is in the sky. Observe the sun rising from differing places along the horizon as the months go by. Learn the night sky, the constellations, know what time of year it is by where Orion is in the heavens.

My favorite Hiking Habit of all time is just across the cow fence from our home all along the mountainside. I created pathways to traverse to reach a large white rock mid mountain which provides the perfect Sit Spot to look out over the mountains and see the sunrise. I know just how many steps it takes to get to the mother pine tree or to the blackberry patch or to my Sit Spots along the path. It is a delight to observe the same trees in the springtime burgeon forth tiny frail leaves from their distinctive terminal buds. Daily they expand and mature…creating magical shade and beauty overhead, the anticipated flower buds and resulting flowers from each tree type never ceased to fascinate me. Invasive blackberries, barberries, hawthorns and wild rose bloom, ripening into berries, haws and hips to be gathered for delicious healthy preparations.

Towards the end of summer, acorns and hickory nuts drop to the ground to be gathered and squirreled away for food. Autumn leaves change their hue from green to brilliant colors preparing to make their final dance to the forest floor turning my Hiking Habit into a crunchy carpet.

October brings with it a maze of sticky spider webs that often span my well-worn path so I hike my paths with a stick waving in front of me to avoid a face plant into a sticky web, but in the morning dew it is easy to spot their silky workmanship and merely duck to avoid destroying it.

The naked lacery of bare branches in the winter has a beauty of its own. I love knowing all my trees by their tell-tale terminal buds and the texture of their bark. Monochromes of winter are still full of color – conifers, moss, lichen and ferns still provide a shock of green, maples stand out with their reddish twigs, flexible willow branches hang gracefully sporting a yellow hue. Eventually, snow flurries blanket everything transforming the landscape into a purity of dazzling white.

Don’t let stormy days keep you from your daily rhythms. Storms add a dimension that is exciting and well worth exploration. Watch tree branches bend wildly with the wind. Listen to the creaking of tree trunks as they are twisted with the cold blasts. Thrill at a rainbow spanning the heavens with the return of the sun as it illuminates the atmosphere.

You have to be outside to see the magic to feel the magic. Don’t miss it!

Utilize all of your senses while hiking and resist the temptation to fill your ears with technology. Learn to be present. Learn the power of stillness. Learn to relish solitude. Nature has a way of stimulating all of our senses and restoring our spirit.

Hiking Habits are fantastic to do together. If you are with a loved one give them the privilege of your full attention as you explore nature together. Some of my best talks with friends have been along my well-worn paths shoulder to shoulder enjoying nature. Stop to smell the roses or to feel the warm sun warming your face…together.

I’ve had many Hiking Habits since those pine laden paths to Trails End with my socks and pockets bulging with acorns and natural treasures. All of them have been special, and I still hike them in my mind, even when they have become inaccessible due to the land being sold. I often wonder how the familiar beloved paths have become overgrown and what surprises are there…unnoticed and unappreciated.

There are risks to anything worth doing. Knowing those risks and planning for them in advance minimizes potential dangers. Simple things like preparing for weather changes by wearing layers, carrying a water bottle, a hiking stick, spraying natural insect repellant, wearing a hat, avoiding hairy vines and poison ivy, scanning for animal activity, or looking up for dead branches. Become Nature Smart and aware of possible dangers so as to anticipate them and be prepared but not scared. Being outside is so vitally important for cognitive development and emotional health that we must choose to raise our children and nurture our own souls in nature embracing any risk with confidence.

On my mountain there is a lot of animal activity so I scan for scat of deer, rabbits, raccoons, bears, coyotes as well as bones from a meal, owl pellets, feathers, and snake exoskeletons, I have become acquainted with where the deer nest and their routine habits of foraging to the creek far below. There is always something that inspires.

Walk with others, as a family, and teach the importance of periods of silence and allowing God’s creation to soak into your souls from the outside in. Bond through nature but get outside…every day.

There is Beauty Everywhere

For those who don’t have the beautiful hills of North Carolina to hike ask God where you can go to renew and recharge. If you live near the beach, walk the sandy shores and tide pools, find a rock or a grassy bluff for your Sit Spot destination. If you live in the city perhaps your daily walk to the subway station can be more purposeful as you carefully observe the trees that line the streets learning them by name and enjoying their seasonal changes. Many cities have planned parks nearby to explore. Central Park in Manhattan is stunning; its gorgeous trees and wild edible plants go on endlessly surrounded by skyscrapers and yet buffered from noise by the thousands of mature trees and bird songs. My son lives in the Big Apple and I was fascinated to learn of this website that catalogues every tree in New York City. So whatever your landscape, you can discover what trees and plants line your streets and hiking paths. We value what we can name.

I have a dear friend who was in prison for 20 years, amd he wrote to us of the gratitude he had for the tiny window high up on his cell wall that would give him a glimpse of the sky. He would lay in his cot watching for the moon and the stars through that tiny window and worship the Lord.

If you don’t have a woods, a swamp, a park or a beach, then put potted plants on your porch to tend and watch grow. Grow a garden. Sit by a tree that is nearby and enjoy its gifts in each season.

Nature-Deficit Disorder is very real. A Hiking Habit is one of the means to combat this debilitating condition.

Nature restores us physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually. God placed us in a Garden. He walked with Adam and Eve in the cool of the day. The most precious part of my daily Hiking Habits and Sit Spots is walking those paths with the One who created it all. Can’t improve on that!!

The mountain folk relied on 4 important cash crops to sustain their way of life – Apples, Moonshine, Hogs and Chestnuts. With the loss of the Chestnuts farmers could afford to fatten their pigs for market on the panage of Chestnuts on the forest floor so with the Chestnuts gone they lost two significant revenue sources in one. Many say that the loss of the American Chestnut was the end of sustainable living in the mountains and hollers.

The common Mullein is anything but mundane, it looms as a GIANT in the green world and is one of my favorites.

Each of my Befriending Plants classes begins with a personal question related to the plant we would meet that day. On one occasion the question was, “Who do you know that stands tall in your mind that you look up to and why?” Saving my ‘giant among men’ story till last we enjoyed hearing each other’s hero stories.

My oldest son Brian was a giant to me. He grew to be a tremendous influence, not only on his friends, but on our family as well. His wise and insightful advice caused me to rethink my position on many issues in life and I grew as a person just from interacting with him. But I lost my “giant” and his loving counsel at a young age and I miss him immensely.

Who are the giants in your life? How did they impact you?

At our weekly Befriending Plants class at the infamous Todd Mercantile, I never know from week to week what plant will be featured. It is always a plant that is ‘in season’ as Nature’s wave rolls by with it’s dizzying pace. This particular week the Lord led me to teach on Great Mullein, Verbascum thapsus.

Why Mullein Became My Plant of Choice

In search of Hawthorn flowers I hiked up my mountain to a near by Hawthorn grove but sadly had missed this short window of Crateagus’ flowery offering. Determined, I looked around to see what else was ‘for sale’ in God’s pharmacy and food stores. The Hawthorn grove is adjacent to a recently clear cut forest that spans for several miles on the East side of our mountain. It had been a green cathedral of towering hardwoods of Poplars, Beech, Birch, Maples, the understory was rich with Ramps, Trilliums, Fern, Wild Ginger, Black and Blue Cohosh, Violets, Bloodroot for starters. An exquisitely magical place that often drew me to spend time there among these giants – reflecting, observing and resting.

My green cathedral before being clear cut

First year Mullein basal rosettes popping up where the forest had been

Max looking out at the mountain view that the trees used to obscure. A walnut, for example, looks like a brain and it is in fact a nutritious key food for brain health. It is a useful game to utilize our sensory perception to make thoughtful guesses as to the hidden treasures and gifts of each plant. For a supernatural view of each plant use a jeweler’s loupe to zoom in close to observe what few get to witness and become intimate with the leaves, the flowers, the seed pods, the tiny unique seeds of life…and also stand back to just observe the plant as a whole. These observations can become ‘bones for a poem’ or a story you write about each green friend, this type of inspection inspires plant drawings as well.

Observing closely the thickly woven hairy leaves, the hairs remind us of the cilia in our lungs giving a solid hint to Mullein’s renown ability to address respiratory health. In particular, it is extremely effective to soothe a dry hacking cough. A tea made from the carefully dried leaves is excellent for respiratory support. Mullein tea was significant in keeping my parents sleeping in the same room because it wondrously took away my mother’s incessant dry hacking cough that had annoyed her and my father for years! It has a delicate taste and is a powerful soothing tea. Mullein is not known for being an edible plant except for this medicinal and pleasant tasty tea that is high in calcium and magnesium. I like to have at least a gallon of Mullein leaves dried for Winter use and have shared it with many friends who have had respiratory challenges over the years.

Herbalist, Ryan Drum talks about the resin that Mullein exudes when a leaf is torn from the stalk having a vanilla scent and his experimentation with making a vanilla like extract from this phenomenon. That is definitely on my Mullein bucket list for herbing around! Mullein infusion or tea made from the leaves has a faint vanilla flavor to it as well.

Other historical and practical uses for Mullein leaves…Mullein’s nickname, Quaker’s Rouge, is so named for it’s prickly leaves used as a rubefacient irritating the cheeks of women to provide a ‘natural’ healthy blush.

“Candlewick plant” refers to the old practice of using the dried down of mullein leaves and stems to make lamp wicks. I have never tried this but it is on my bucket list as well.

Some foragers call Mullein ‘nature’s toilet paper’ but I am certain they never tried this for it is anything but comfortable or soothing with the irritating hairs of the leaves. However, colonists and American Indians did use Mullein leaves to line their shoes and absorb moisture. I’ve even heard of the larger elliptical leaves being used for diapers. There is a demulcent (soothing) effect in Mullein leaves but those hairs are irritating. Not sure how to use these healing leaves in this way but most likely poultices and fomentations are the way to go. The leaves can be frozen whole to use for these purposes.

My favorite way to store the leaves is by drying them in small bundles till crisp and then storing in mason jars.

Mullein Flowers

When harvesting the flowers you have to beat the bees to them before they take the pollen! Their anodyne (pain relieving) quality has been proved by scientific studies to be one of the most effective ear ache remedies. Mullein flower infused oil is soothing for ears and infusing these flower in honey makes for a soothing concoction for sore throats. Antiseptic in constituents these tiny flowers have powerful healing properties. The flowers can be eaten in a salad or for decorating a cake and have been used for centuries to dye hair or fabrics yellow.

Look at this beauty! The wind can whip at crazying speeds and Verbascum thapsus just bends with it’s power and then straightens with ease. It is Mullein’s tap root that is specific for addressing spinal alignment issues. I make a tincture out of the whole plant for this purpose including well macerated roots. Or you can decoct the root as a strong tea to ease back pain. Herbalist Jim Macdonald shares an awesome personal story of how decocting the roots helped the painful dislocated disc in his spine to realign itself so he could continue his canoe trip. Check out his blog posted below to read more of Jim’s respect and experience with Mullein.

Another unusual use for Mullein root is it’s usefulness in strengthening the bladder muscles. Harvest the first year root in the Autumn and dry it, after drying grind it into a fine powder in a coffee grinder and fill #00 capsules with the powder. Take two with each meal for six weeks. This is also excellent for children with weak bladders who wet the bed or for seniors who are losing bladder control.

Mullein Seeds

The tiny peppery seeds have a narcotic relaxing effect, supposedly fisherman have better luck fishing by pouring a tea made from the seeds in their favorite fishing hole. This propurtedly inebriates the fish and makes them easier to catch.

Due to the rotenone in the seeds they can act as an insect repellant as well. Many surmise that the Mullein stalks dipped in tallow and lit for torches also repelled pesky insects in the process of lighting a path.

You can always locate first year plants around the base of a retired Mullein seed skeleton!

Playful ideas: The seed stalks also make for beautiful dried flower arrangements as do the dried leaves. I posted a few pictures of crafting with Mullein below. Some of my herbal apprentices have thrown long straight Mullein stalk as an herbal javelin!! And a magical thing to do with Mullein seed stalks on a snowy Winter day is to cut the stalk at the base and whirl around spreading the tiny black seeds like pepper in a circle on the white snow.

Reflecting on Giant Stories – Devotional on Mullein

My “giant” Brian was a young man who lived life to the full, sometimes in daring adventures. One day we received a call that he had been in an accident flying a wing suit in the mountains of Switzerland. My husband went to the Swiss hospital to be by his side while we wondered if he would come out of the coma and recover. On April 2, 2014, he left this earth to spend eternity with the God who cared for him, guided him, and captured his imagination and his heart. We look forward to joining him someday. You can read more about him here: https://www.jasondrake.com/brian-drake.

Some people are bigger than life.

Brian changed my life in more ways than I can count. Brian was a seeker of truth and taught others by the Socratic method of asking genuine questions, listening well and helping the rest of us to think along with him. So many of my rusty paradigms were shifted from time spent with Brian, reading the books he suggested, facing hard questions posed in a respectful way. Everything from natural healing, history, economics to Jesus Christ was rethought and brought into clearer focus because of his influence. Other’s felt similarly about him as well but I did not know the reach of Brian’s presence in the lives of others until after he was gone and the stories came pouring in.

As a professional BASE jumper, Brian lived in the French Alps for easy access to altitude.

The Mystery of the Seeds

In the weeks following his accident in the Swiss Alps I looked for comfort from my Creator, from His Word and His creation. One of the promises I held most dear is in Psalms “All of the children of My servants will continue and their seed will be established before Me.” As we spread Brian’s ashes in a skydive over a drop zone in San Diego, God impressed on my raw heart that none of his ashes would fall to the desert floor in vain. Seeds of Love had been planted.

But the seeds are what captivated my attention because as I was geeking out researching more about Mullein on Google I read that they can sit dormant on the earth’s skin for up to 100 years. What brings them to life is devastation. Whether that be a fire or a clear cut, as in my story, they wait till they are needed to burst forth and bring healing to the denuded forest floor or the burned ground.

Jim MacDonald says, “The best way I know to get Mullein to grow where you live is to burn a brush pile and come back in a year!”

Mullein blankets the land where fire has cleared forests. In this, it appears as though the plant is invading the land, but after a year or two, new plant species emerge and diversity expands. Mullein acts as a kind of soothing balm that eases and covers with its leaves the devastation and disruption and helps regenerate new growth. ‘Mullein is also known to regenerate new growth in human lungs’ helping us breathe.

This reference to dormant seeds waiting for fire or devastation to sprout and bring forth healing was extremely meaningful for me and the timing of this teaching was incredible.

We all go through fires of adversity, life is hard, waiting is hard but knowing that we are not alone and that Life is coming and healing will be brought about in time…is an anchor for the weary soul. Though none of us would choose it – fires and pain can bring forth much good in it’s refining process.

3-2-1 Thank You

This teaching on Mullein corresponded in my life to the birthday of our eldest son Brian who died in 2014 in a BASE jumping accident in the Swiss Alps.

But now, thus says the Lord, your Creator, and He who formed you,

“Do not fear, for I have redeemed you;
“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.”

Just as an expectant mother prepares for her soon to be born child, God prepared with infinite care for the arrival of His children. All of creation was brought into existence with the purpose of making it anthropomorphic. Fitting for man’s survival and Scientists sometimes call our region of space the “Goldilocks Zone” because it appears to be ‘just right’ for life. There are 13 incredibly ‘lucky’ earth facts that make our planet not just feasible for life but life giving. Before God breathed His own breath into Adam He had already prepared the earth with all it’s plants and beauty, the heavens, the sun and moon, and the animals. Everything perfectly situated to support the arrival and care of mankind.

Just one of these lucky facts is that our planet orbits the sun at just the right distance – not too hot, not too cold. This habitable zone is where water can exist in liquid form. There are 12 Lucky Earth Facts that make planet earth the perfect place to sustain life. You can read about them here.

When God created the Garden of Eden, it was perfect. It operated beautifully according to Gods plan. Everything was in order. The beauty of the garden reflected the beauty of its Creator. The pleasures hidden deep within Eden reflected pleasures within its Creator. The marvelous mysteries in the Garden of Eden represented the marvelous mysteries of its Creator. What a setting to birth mankind!

“Then God said, “let Us make man in Our image, after Our likeness. And let them have dominion…….. over all the earth…“ Genesis 1:26-30 God gave man dominion so that he would rule the earth with the same care and protection that God had afforded him. In Genesis 2:15 “the Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it.” Tend means more than keep it orderly, the Hebrew word means to guard, to watch and to protect. The word “Work” means to cultivate and to serve. Thus we were given to task of stewarding creation with wisdom and love.

There are many admonitions throughout the Bible on man’s responsibility to steward wisely His creation. We are exhorted to be faithful (even in the smallest details), to be thoughtful, to be grateful, to be joyful and to give thanks to our Creator for the glories of His creation entrusted to us.

Warnings as to God’s promised judgment for not caring for the land wisely are also there in God’s word. “you shall not pollute the land in which you live.” Number 35:33 God commanded that the earth could be worked for 6 years and then let to rest or lay fallow for a year. Ignoring this command resulted in the 70 year captivity in Babylon of the Israelite people.

Unfortunately dishonorable stewardship of the earth and her resources occur on a catastrophic level with serious consequences to the health of the earth and it’s inhabitants. Ravaging the earth’s resources, over harvesting, polluting the air, the land and the oceans and over harvesting is all too

“Sustainable development: a means of consuming the resources of the earth in such a way that we do not impair the ability of the earth to provide the same resources to future generations.”

“Whoever tends a fig tree will eat its fruit,” Proverbs 27:18
