Small island.Or did someone forget to tell the elephants that large animals are not found on small islands?Not content with defying conventional zoological wisdom,the best place in Asia for seeing the continent's largest terrestrial animal.
Elephants are inextricably woven into the island's cultural fabric.In ancient time they were used in war or as royal mounts.For centuries they have featured prominently in cultural pageants such as Kandy's famous Esala perahara held every year in the closeing and first week of July and August,respectively.Yet it is not the killing for sport but the loss of habitat wich has made the elephant endangered and pocketed continually in conflict with the ever-encroaching tide of humanity.
Elephant are special animals in many ways.Earlier in the day i had to Ali and Lewis.On one of my frequent game driver in yala National park.I had come across a lone bull elephant at a waterhole.As my driver began to pull away,I called out for him to stop.Some was not right.The elephant was not drinking,but standing motionless with its trunk submerged.Perhaps it had meat to drink,but something had stopped this tall male.I realized he was listening intently.But not the way we do.Oh no,this was in 'infrasound'.The giant of Lanka are special in many ways.

Planning for the future shape and composition of the US Army's attack and scout helicopter fleet has proved a fickle business in recent years because of shifting budgets and protracted development schedules.The latest volte face calls for the combat-proven Boeing AH-64D Apache Longbow to remain the army's principal heavy hitter for a further 25 years,with the Boeing Sikorsky RAH-66 Comanche providing its eyes and on the battlefield.

The comanche programme has now gone full circle.The RAH-66 dates back to the mid-1980s and the US Army's LHX requirements for an armed reconnaissance machine,when it was envisaged to build2096 machine at $8.9 million apiece.This was then cut to 1,292 helicopters and later,in a move to shore the reqiurement,it was repositioned as successor to the Apache.Last year the programme was restructured for a fifth time and a Defense Acquisition Board (DAB) review haived the planned purchase to just 650 helicopters.

"comanche was really designed to be a reconnaissance vehical and then it became armed reconnaissance and then a light attack vehicle,"says chuck Allen,Boeing Sikorsky RAH-66 programme director."I think by deugn and direction of the secretary of the army,we 're getting back to reconnaissance and saying we'll never be the type of heavy-attck,tank-killing platform that Apache is.It was not designed to do it."

The money cut from the production has gone into development.As a result ,the engineering and manufacturing development budgets has more than double from $3.2 billion to $6.5 billion to cover work though to the planned Block 3 version due to be deployed in 2012.The intial operational capability date for the first of 73 Block 1 machines has been pushed back from the end of 2006 to september 2009.This will be followed by 106 Block 2 machines,starting in 2011,and fianlly Block 3.

To ensure the programme adheres to this latest revised schedule,the Boeing Sikorsky team and US Army have instigated an earn-value sysytem to track progress closely and quickly highlight any potentional delay.

The programme is now in the final throes of critical design review of the complete air vehicle system,with the exception of the Longbow fire-control radar(FCR) and low observable design features,such as air frame chines and covers for the rotor cuff attachments.A shortage of funds has delayed this until next year.

Astronomers are keen to find a rockey,Earth-like plante revolving around a Sun-like star;it's the most likely place to find life as we know it.But the technologies used to find such planets,which work by analysing starlight,haven't been up to task.
Most of the 300 or so exoplanets(planets outside our solar system) discoverd to data are giants similar to jupiter,although some with masses below 10 time that of the Earth have already been found.Since the discovery of the first so-called exoplanet 13 years ago,scientists have been able to glean little about the know extrasolar planets.Even ro0ugh size and masses have been calculated for a mere 30 of those planets.But spectrography has been unvelling secrets.At different wavelengths,every atom and moleculeha its own telltale footprint,so scientists can convert what are known as absorption spectra into the chemical composition of the object they're looking at.

Now researchers at the Harvard smithsonian center for astrophysics have adapted a relatively young laser technology to take spectrography one step further,namely to discern the once undetectabley faint gravitational stars'light output.
Their system increases the precision of spectrographs-optics used to analyse light from distant stars-by a hundred times,and it should make it possible to detect Earth-like planets.This May,Harvard senior lecturer Ronald walsworth and postdoc chih-Hao Li installed the system at the Multiple Mirror Telescope on Mount Hopkins,in Arizona.
If the Harvard technique hold up in used on actual telescopes,it could be "a huge breakthrough" in the search for Earth-like planets,which will help scientists"understand how our own earth came to be"and search for life beyond our planet,says sara seager,a professor of earth and planetary sciences at MIT.
TO DATE,astronomers have discoverd nearly 300 planets,called exoplnats,outside our own solar system.For exsample,just last month,astronomers at NASA announced that the HUbble Space Telescope had detected evidence of water and an organic molecule on a planet 63 light years away.
But that the planet is gaseous and searingly hot:indeed none of the exoplanets yet found are Earth-like.As a planet orbits around its star,its gravitational pull"causes the star to wiggle back and forth,"says George Ricker,a planetary scientist at MIT.

Due to the Doppler effect,this tiny chage in the start's motion causes tiny changes in the wavelengths of the starlight that reaches us.Astronomers use an optical tool called a spectrograph to split starlight gathered by telescopes into its componet wavelengths.
