Kawah Ijen volcano has a one-kilometer-wide turquoise-colored acid crater lake. The bottom left of the picture is the site of a labor-intensive sulfur mining operation.

This is an active volcanic greater with a turquoise-colored acid crater lake. An active vent at the edge of the lake is a source of sulfur. The volcanic gasses are channeled through a network of ceramic pipes, resulting in condensation of molten sulfur. The sulfur, which is deep red in color when molten, pours slowly from the ends of these pipes and pools on the ground, turning bright yellow as it cools. The cooled material is broken into large pieces and carried out in baskets by the miners.

Taken while the stars were still visible, just as the sun started to lighten the dawn sky and the spectacular volcanic peaks. The long exposure has blurred the steam rising out of Mt Bromo.

Borobudur was built in the 9th century. The monument comprises six square platforms topped by three circular platforms. A main dome, located at the center of the top platform, is surrounded by 72 Buddha statues seated inside perforated stupa shown in this image. The sun has just risen over volcanoes in the distance.
