HTC Supersonic, the Sprint’s First WiMAX Phone

Even though HTC MAX 4G (GSM) hits FCC but it seem Sprint will bring the first WiMAX phone (CDMA) in the US.

Apparently Sprint will add another Android-based Smartphone in its portfolio. Start from HTC Hero, Samsung Moment and soon the HTC A9292 (Supersonic).

HTC Supersonic has large 4.3inch (480 x 800) capacitive touch screen powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon QSD8650 1 GHz processors and operates the latest Android 2.1 Flan.

We don’t have any information regarding WiMAX chip but it is presumably utilized Beceem BCSM250 single-chip mobile WiMAX solution.It’s the same chip inside Sprint Overdrive 3G/4G.

Intel Unveiled Intel Centrino Advanced-N + WiMAX 6250 Adapter

WiMAXian featured the new Intel WiMAX/WiFi adapter for the first time in July 2009 when WiMAX Forum certified the Intel Centrino Advanced-N+ WiMAX 6250 codenamed Kilmer Peak.

The first appearance in October when Intel showcased Intel Centrino Advanced-N+WiMAX 6250 at CEATEC JAPAN 2009.

In November Intel confirmed Kilmer Peak in production and will launch with the Calpella Arrandale notebook platform solution in Q1 2010.

Recently Computer World had opportunity to use notebook with the 6250 to test the data transfer rates and battery life which they found 6250 faster and power hungry.

Last Thursday Intel Corporation unveiled its 2010 Intel Core vPro processor family.The 2010 Intel Core i7 processors and Core i5 processors feature Intel Turbo Boost Technology and Intel Hyper-Threading Technology for adaptive, “smarter” computing.

For wireless performance that complements the speed of the new Intel Core i5 and Core i7 processors,Intel unveiled the Intel Centrino Advanced-N + WiMAX 6250 adapter (model code : 622ANHMW), which offers up to 20-Mbps WiMAX and advanced 802.11abgn (up to 300 Mbps) WiFi for maximum versatile coverage.

Intel also introduced Intel Centrino Ultimate-N 6300 and Intel® Centrino Advanced-N 6200 802.11n WLAN adapters.

High-end notebooks will likely integrate the new 6250 in Half Mini Card form factor, which, as the name implies, includes both WiMAX (2.3 GHz, 2.5GHz and 3.5GHz band) as well 802.11a/b/g/n support.

Also Intel reduced WLAN power consumption results in potentially longer platform battery life for greater utility, enjoyment, and convenience.

For remote management of wireless settings, Intel provide Intel PROSet/Wireless WiMAX Connection Utility and Intel PROSet/Wireless WiFi Software v.13.0 as Connection Manager.

Compared to previous version of the Intel WiMAX/WiFi Link 5150, shipped last year. “The 6250 is a bit of a technological marvel – it supports both bands of WiFi and all 3 bands of WiMAX,” said Ashish Gupta, a product line manager, in an online chat session. “Most people don’t realize WiMAX has specific frequency bands like WiFi.”

CLEAR officially offering Ubee PXU1900 on their official website.CLEAR named it CLEAR 4G Mobile USB and sell for $59.99 + tax and lease for $4.99 + tax.

CLEAR 4G Mobile USB is WiMAX USB modem that so small and fits in your pocket. Its internal antenna has been improved for better reception but consume less power.

It also has a hinged/swivel design, meaning you can flip it up instead of having it stick straight out of your notebook. So it more flexible and prevent from broken.

CLEAR also offering CLEAR Performance Dock for $9.99 + tax. Basically it’s an additional external antenna for CLEAR 4G Mobile USB. Instead of connecting the WiMAX USB modem directly to your notebok, you simply plug in to the Performance Dock and then connect the Dock to your notebook via USB.

Ubee PXU1900, the New USB WiMAX Modem for CLEAR

In November 2009 Ubee Interactive received WiMAX Forum certification for Ubee 4G Mobile USB.

Ubee Interactive is a Taiwanese supplier of broadband Internet equipment including cable modems, ADSL modems, VoIP,IPTV etc.

Currently CLEAR prepping a new usb modem possibly Ubee PXU1900 from Ubee Interactive.It’s a USB WiMAX modem that operates in the 2.5 GHz spectrum. Apparently utilized Beecem WiMAX solutions.

Ubee PXU1900 apparently can plug in to a device looks like a WiFi router to share WiMAX connection to other WiFi enabled devices.It’s external addition antenna.

Intel WiMAX/WiFi Link 6250 Faster and Power Hungry

As we have known that in Q1 2010 Intel start to introduce its latest WiMAX/WiFi Link 6250 internal chipset for notebook to access WiMax networks.

The chip set should provide faster data transfers than its predecessors WiMAX/WiFi Link 5150 and give longer battery life to laptops than external cards, said Tim Sweeney, an Intel spokesman. The second-generation WiMAX silicon is more compact and has a high level of integration that boosts its performance.

Recently Computer World had opportunity to use Dell Inspiron pre-production notebook with the WiMAX/WiFi Link 6250 chip set to test the data transfer rates and battery life.

This is what they said :
The data transfer rates were impressive when the chip set was connected to CLEAR’s WiMAX network in Las Vegas, but the laptop’s battery life was short of expectations when the service was running.

Download speeds outpaced even my AT&T DSL connection at home. I watched a streaming video from Netflix, without choppy images, from multiple locations three miles apart. Even video from ESPN360’s Web site, usually broken when viewed from my DSL home connection, was smooth on the WiMAX connection.

But the fast transfer speeds took a toll on the laptop’s battery life. The battery indicator dropped down to around three hours when the Netflix video was playing, and jumped up to more than four hours when the WiMAX service was idle. That said, battery life goes down under active WiFi usage as well, which is very common with laptops.

The decrease in battery life with WiMAX depends on the data transmission rates and the distance of a connection from the base station, Sweeney said.

“The farther away the client is from the base station, the more transmit power it must put out for the base station to receive or ‘hear’ it. It has to ’shout’ louder to be heard by the base station due to the increased distance,” Sweeney said. This is true for WiFi as well, but in general the transmit power for a WiMax client will be higher, he said.

But tight integration and software help the chip set perform better than an external device in power consumption, Sweeney said.

It seems using notebook equipped with WiMAX/WiFi Link 6250 will be better in performance and its simplicity than regular notebook with additional USB WiMAX modem.

Notebook manufacture develop longer life battery for example the new built-in Apple Macbook battery lasts up to 7 hours on single charge. So power consumption will not big issue.

That means that over the course of the 2 year contract, this Samsung NC10 would end up costing you about $1,190.

Compared to Nokia Booklet 3G netbook offered through AT&T would cost a total of $1,740 over a two-year contract.

Even though Samsung NC10 is an old netbook but it was one of the top contender for netbook battery champ of 2008 with up to 6 hours of continuous use.

Sierra Wireless AirCard W801 Available as Sprint Overdrive 3G CDMA/4G WiMAX Mobile Hotspot

Portable WiMAX/WiFi router to create personal hotspot is getting popular for example Sprint currently offering three products which are Cradlepoint PHS300S, Cradlepoint MBR-1000 and the latest one is Sierra Wireless AirCard W801.

Overdrive 3G/4G Mobile Hotspot will available beginning on Jan. 10 exclusively from Sprint for $99.99 (excluding taxes) after a $50 mail-in-rebate with a two-year service agreement. Also Sprint will offer simplified 3G/4G data plans for consumers and businesses at $59.99 monthly (price plans exclude surcharges and taxes).

Sprint 3G CDMA/4G WiMAX USB 301 Software for Mac OS X Available Now

Sprint was listening the voice customer who unsatisfied because Sprint 3G/4G USB 300 doesn’t support Mac OS X.
The new Sprint 3G/4G USB 301 is in the list of Sprint SmartView 2.28 for Mac OS X ( Leopard and Snow Leopard ) supported devices. For a full list of supported devices, click here.
This software does not support Phone-as-Modem handset connections to the Sprint Mobile Broadband Network.

Green Packet DX ‘Tower’ to Become WiMAX/WiFi Router for VividWireless Australia

Unwired subsidiary VividWireless is planning to deploy WiMAX networks nationwide in the next two years.Vividwireless will be responsible for marketing and customer service on the network and Unwired for construction and operation.

Currently the company deploying a Mobile WiMAX network throughout Perth, Australia in the 2.3Ghz spectrum. But Unwired CEO David Spence has already flagged the company’s intention to hit all major metropolitan areas by 2012 – taking on both wireless and fixed-line competition.

VividWireless is targeting March 2010 for the commercial launch of the service in the western city of Perth.

According to VividWireless, it intends to differentiate its offering from 3G services of Telstra, Hutchison Telecoms (Australia) Ltd. and SingTel Optus Pty. Ltd. on speed and quality of service (QoS) capabilities.

In a statement, VividWireless CEO Martin Mercer said, “We know that mobile broadband customers have an insatiable appetite for speed and a growing need to access the Internet wherever and whenever they want. Our network will satisfy this need for speed, delivering customer speeds up to 10 times faster than currently delivered by 3G networks at prices that are equivalent to fixed line services.”

That would pitch broadband packages from VividWireless at significantly lower prices than competitors’ mobile broadband plans.

VividWireless quotes average speeds of 4 Mbit/s for laptop users and a peak rate of 20 Mbit/s. That’s faster than the theoretical peak downlink rates offered by Optus (7.6 Mbit/s) and 3 Australia (3.6 Mbit/s), and about on a par with Telstra, which has upgraded its HSPA network to HSPA Evolved (also known as HSPA+). This delivers 21 Mbit/s downlink theoretical peak rates. Telstra intends to upgrade again to 42 Mbit/s by the end of the year.

In early December Abigroup Telecommunications has secured a contract with VividWireless to construct the base stations for its planned mobile WiMAX network in Perth, due to launch in March 2010.Abigroup will be responsible for civil construction of base station sites and for install the antennas, cabinets and equipment and for base station testing.

Recently VividWireless has purchased Green Packet newly launched DX ‘Tower’ WiMAX/WiFi router which showcased at WiMAX Forum Congress Americas in December 2009.Apparently it will be Green Packet DX230 which works on 2.3GHz spectrum.

DX Tower is the world’s first Wave-2 compliant 2.3GHz WiMAX Integrated Access Device (IAD) featuring omni directional antennas for best-in-class performance.

Samsung SWD-V300 Cosmos, GSM Phone with Built-in Functions for VoIP over WiMAX

Apparently the phone with the ability to make calls on the WiMAX network will available soon for people in Russia.
Newsland reported that Denis Sverdlov,CEO Yota, presented a prototype of a new phone that can work in GSM and WiMAX network at ITU Telecom World.It’s the world’s first phone which will able to make calls over the network using internet telephony (VoIP) over WiMAX network.
Recently Sotovik reported New Year Meeting with Denis Sverdlov that confirmed in February-March 2010, will launch GSM+WiMAX phone, the Samsung SWD-V300 Cosmos ,featured Mode calls for VoIP over WiMAX and it can be used as a modem for Yota.

According to Denis Sverdlov,the price including voice call (VoIP) plan will be in the range of 10,000 rubles but voice calls between Yota subscribers will be free of charge.

Before the “Cosmos” will go on sale, Yota will distribute 1000 phones to Yota testers for trial period.

We don’t have any official specification yet, we presume Samsung SWD-V300 specification as follow :
