Sorry to everyone who was actually following this blog! Brexit has mixed up the life of many people including the blog writer one's. This means I am not involved locally in activities in Winchester any more as I have moved away to another country.

Why did you move I hear you say. Nobody made you or wanted you to leave!

Yes, that might be true, but I also didn't really see many rallying for the rights of EU citizens in the UK apart from mainly the EU citizens themselves. (I also didn't see too many rallying for the rights of the Brits in the EU - sorry, but the country is so complacent in the face of its own government taking rights away from its citizens, it's unfathomable...) Instead I heard and read more and more stories about migrants in the UK being attacked in various ways and also about how our rights of residing in the UK would change. In addition to that, I had a couple of not so very nice encounters myself.

Since I couldn't go for dual nationality due to an unfortunate mix of the UK's and my birth country's laws, I didn't want to become a second class not-citizen with fewer rights, and also under all circumstances I wanted to avoid for my son to be bullied about being a foreigner (despite being born in the UK). We all know this would have happened at some point, even with him actually having dual nationality. So the logical choice was to go to a place where we could live in peace with all of our citizens' rights intact. As the whole family has the same birth nationality, this mission was relatively easy to accomplish. However, it wasn't done with a happy heart.

So, the UK has permanently lost all of this:

[As this is apparently so important to everyone that immigrants are good immigrants and earning their keep:] taxes on a good income and also a whole job, as it moved with us and is now located outside of the UK.
A volunteer for a Winchester Scouts group.
An activist happy to help out on many technical things that other people don't like or find difficult.
A leader for Winchester's multinational walking group.
Most importantly, a local friend to many.

Some of these were obviously also hard for me. But after 18 months in our new home things have settled, we have forged new friendships and feel at home. The stress caused by our uncertain situation in the UK and the depression due to that have gone. There are even quite a few upsides of being where we are now, one of them being my son learning to speak and write his mother tongue properly. But don't get me wrong, I would lie if I wouldn't admit that I will forever bear a grudge that we had to go through all of this heartbreak.

I am happy to see that there are still pro-EU campaigns being run in Winchester and many other parts of the UK. I am hoping very much, that the UK will one day rejoin the EU.

As for you, the readers, please take time out of your busy lives to help campaign to make the UK a better place for everyone, especially the poor and weak, in whichever way you can! Without that participation nothing will happen. And speak to other people about your convictions. Talking politics might not be seen as polite by some but it certainly is important as it has an effect on all of our lives!

Participants at the People's Vote March For The Future

Last night‘s Council meeting agenda had a Notice of Motion to be moved by Councillor Rutter (Liberal Democrats) regarding Brexit. Amongst other things it said this: “Council calls on the government to abandon plans for a hard Brexit and to give the people of Winchester a vote on the final deal, along with the opportunity to vote on keeping the irreplaceable benefits Britons currently enjoy by staying in the European Union.”

People who were there reported that several Liberal Democrat speakers spoke in favour of the motion. The Conservative members didn't say anything. Eventually a Conservative Councillor (Vicky Weston) said a few words and moved a procedural motion to proceed to next business - which meant that the meeting moved onto the next item without a vote on the actual motion. Martin Tod (Liberal Democrats) called for a recorded vote (so that there would be a written record of how everyone voted). 23 Conservatives voted in favour of proceeding to next business, 22 Liberal Democrats against. So the debate was over without a vote on the motion, which in essence resulted in a blocked motion.

There is plenty that could be said here regarding the way this motion was handled by the Winchester Conservatives, but let's concentrate on just one item: we've heard that the Conservative councillor before her procedural motion mentioned that the council is being involved in "local matters", representing "local hard working people". This is a very shortsighted way to see their roles and actually damaging the debate as it divides the local electorate into people who are worth working for and those who are apparently not. For a start it is not clear what is meant by 'local' people (e.g. are you still 'local' without a British passport?) and secondly, are people who are for whatever reasons not 'hard working' not allowed to have representation? And of course, do we really have to spell it out that these 'local hard working people' (in the widest sense) are the same people who are already affected negatively by what is currently going on? Also, and this shouldn't even have to be mentioned, people who are on the remain side are 'local hard working people' too, and their side of the argument should still be fairly heard and debated properly - especially as the nation is so divided!

It was actually mentioned in the motion debate that some Winchester district residents are planning on leaving the country (or have already left) because of problems with their status resulting out of the changes required by the UK leaving the European Union. These people are taking action as they are tired of being made into second class citizens by the Conservative government, losing democratic rights that they had, in the Brexit process. Apart from leaving gaps in the social fabric of Winchester, these people contributed with their taxes to the UK's exchequer (EU migrant workers contribute £2,300 more per year to UK than average British citizen, study reveals). Losing them is a very real effect on the UK and local people!

If you are not happy with the motion result, please keep writing to your local councillors and MP!

People's Vote March For The Future - what a march it was!

Yesterday saw one of the biggest ever protest march in the history of the UK, second only to the anti-war protests in February 2003. Following beforehand on Facebook how many people from all parts of the UK said they would come along this time, I expected this march to be big, and the organisers put a number of 100,000 participants out there. The actual number was heart warming: most media reported about 700,000 participants!

What do we do now? The Leave side is busy rallying people to write to their MPs ("£250,000 ad campaign urges voters to oppose May’s Brexit plan"). It is very important to write to your MP too to represent the other side! It doesn't have to be a long email or letter, but the more they get, the better. Letter writing is an important tool to have your voice registered with your representatives. See the Have Your Say! tab with suggestions on how to go about this.

Pro-EU campaign update

Since our last blog post in June, things have been moving fast: there were two more street stalls in Winchester - and it is only one more week until the big People's Vote March For The Future in London!

This march is hugely important! If you can, drop everything and attend! We need to show how many are opposing what the UK government is trying to do! It's easy to get to the march from Winchester in good company on the COACH organised by the European Movement Hampshire. Have you booked your ticket yet? If not, do so now, there are not many seats left! If you should prefer to go by train but don't want to travel on your own, we would recommend to ask for travel companions in the Facebook group of The 48% - Winchester.

Whichever kind of Brexit the UK government is going to implement, it is going to be a failure! See this short but brilliant video done by Femi from OFOC explaining once again the consequences of different scenarios and why we need a proper People's Vote on all options (video opening on Facebook):

"EU supporters gathered on Saturday 22nd September for Action Day, marked by all the leading organisations opposed to Brexit. In Winchester the Hampshire European Movement, the 48% Winchester and the Win-IN (Winchester International Network) set up a stall by the Buttercross to show passers-by in the High Street the folly of Brexit.

Winchester voted 59% to remain in the EU, and the prospect of Brexit is already having negative effects on many. Holidays are more expensive, prices are rising quicker than wages, the NHS and others have staffing problems. FEELING THE BREXIT SQUEEZE? was the right question on our brochure — and the right question for the High Street.

More than 60 volunteers, wearing something blue and waving EU flags, attended the European Movement stand and the 48% Winchester gathering. Many members of the public signed the EM petition asking the Government to Release the Brexit Impact Studies. And in a spirit of democracy there were also some heated discussions with a few Brexiteers, where all “agreed to disagree”.

The lovely sunny afternoon added to the occasion — as did the presence of the Winchester Morris Men, giving extra sound and motion effects to the discussions on politics and Brexit. Perhaps inspired by the Morris Men’s hankering for tradition, a group of Remainers then adjourned to the pub!"

One campaigner wrote this about the day: "My favourite quote from the day was a lovely lady who said 'it's all a bit of a muddle really' thus summing up the whole Brexit debacle in one sentence. People were divided on the question about who should have a say on final decision with someone saying 'it was the people who got us into this mess in the first place' and someone else saying she feared giving a peoples vote risked dividing an already divided nation even further. Lots of people are very unhappy with the way things are going."

Another one had this to add: "the Brexitometer was busy throughout the morning, in spite of the rain. At times we had a queue for it. I met a young man who had been working in the EU import/export business who had just been made redundant because of Brexit. He was very interested in our campaign and signed up to join the group."

The October stall

The next stall was on 6 October. One of our campaigners described the day as follows: "Unfortunately for this event the weather was foul. The purpose of the stall was to promote the march on 20 October. What struck me was (1) the number of well-wishes from outside Hampshire (e.g. Shropshire, Northern Ireland). Plus a lady came from Andover just to wish us well. And (2) the number of people who were already committed to going in the march."

Is Brexit going well? The Brexitometer speaks for itself!

On Saturday there was another Pro-EU street stall in Winchester, this time to gauge the mood in regards to 'how Brexit is going' and also to promote the People's Vote march on 23 June in London.

The public didn't have to be encouraged at all, they were more than eager to fill up our Brexitometer and at times queued for it! After the first hour, we had to expand certain areas of it as there were just too many dots going on top of each other! This makes very clear, Brexit is certainly a Big deal, but not Done deal! On top of that we had a reporter and a camera man from the BBC there, interviewing one of our activists at the stall, and they were also later talking to another campaigner, a local non-British EU citizen who is leaving the UK after 12 years because of the status changes that are coming for her when the UK leaves the EU.

Some of the footage should be on BBC South News on the days running up to the march in London (we don't have an exact date/time yet), so keep an eye out for us!

GDPR - and what happened to our mailing list!

As everybody who is remotely active on the internet knows by now, on Friday 25 May the new GDPR rules became binding for the EU and for the data of its citizens worldwide. To comply with that, the Win-IN website now has a Privacy Policy and I have also made changes to the mailing list we have. Coincidentally, I have also switched this website over to the safer HTTPS protocol as Google has recently activated this option for Blogger hosted websites. So far so good.

Let me tell you a little about the mailing list:

Our list isn't huge, on Thursday 24 May we had 175 email addresses with names in there, collected at various events and also through this website.

All of the data are safely kept on MailChimp, an Email Marketing Service provider used by many organisations who need to keep in touch with members (be it for marketing or not). Any list subscriber can at all times access their data on the MailChimp site and either change them or unsubscribe completely (through a link in every sent mail). MailChimp have their own privacy policy and were very helpful with information on how to make our email list and sign-up procedure GDPR compliant.

Once I got my head around all the changes necessary, it transpired that I had to set up a new sign-up form on the MailChimp site (the link is on the Contact tab) and remove the embedded form from our website. On the new form every subscriber has to grant us clear permission to email them.

To make things watertight, we had to ask electronic confirmation of this permission for every existing subscriber, so on Thursday I sent out an email to all of them asking to give us this permission to keep emailing them.

Here is what happened: so far, out of the 175 subscribers a few have unsubscribed and only about 30 opted in, 17%. Ouch - but I think this will be similar for most of the organisations who asked for opt-in.

According to MailChimp's report, we had an email opening rate of 38.7% (which is slightly better than what we normally get and definitely better than the non-profit industry standard at 18.8%), in real numbers that was just under 70 people looking at the mail - and less than half of those have opted in.

I fear the emails to the rest of our subscriber list have either disappeared in spam folders or been ignored. But it’s OK, I want our emails to go to interested people.

If you happen to be one of our subscribers and haven't seen an email but would like to keep in the loop, please do check your spam folder and if you find the mail please do what the email asks of you. If you are not able to find the email, then please re-subscribe via our sign-up form on the MailChimp site. It really only takes a moment. Alternatively if you still have one of our previous mails, locate the Update Your Preferences link at the bottom and follow the instructions given there.

In addition to that, if you think our emails are useful, you could always point friends who might be interested to our website or the email campaign archive and ask them to subscribe too.

Alternative ways to stay in touch are of course to use RSS (for the website), or social media.

People's Vote Action Day

This morning at the Winchester Buttercross we had a nice big group of friendly pro-EU campaigners (from Winchester and further afield) coming together, representing various groups like the European Movement, The 48% - Winchester, and, of course, Win-IN.

Once again many people on the High Street were happily engaging with us. Our small EU flags, badges and Citizen of Europe stickers were well received and many stories were shared about how Brexit will adversely affect (and in many cases already affects) people's lives, be they from the UK or from other EU countries.

We invited everybody to cast a vote on whether there should be a People's Vote on the Brexit deal, and also to write postcards to our local MP. Votes and postcards were gathered in a transparent ballot box and will be taken to our MP in due course.

The postcards had come from the National pro Remain Postcards Campaign and looked like this:

People’s Vote campaign: Brexit is a big deal, not a done deal!

Last weekend saw activists from nine pro-European organisations launch a grassroots campaign for a People’s Vote on the final Brexit deal.

In support of this campaign, the Hampshire European Movement and other local organisations will hold a joint stall in Winchester on Saturday 21st April 2018, 10:30 to 1pm.
A transparent ballot box will be available and the public encouraged to cast their vote for, or against holding the People’s Vote.

Come and join us in Winchester High Street at the Buttercross, just to cast your vote, or stay and support us for an hour or two. Wear something blue, bring a flag, hope for blue skies.

Local Elections 2018 - register to vote by 17 April!

Once again, the date for the local elections is approaching fast - many of us can vote on 3 May. Details on who is allowed to take part can be found on the Your Vote Matters site. If you are eligible, you need to be registered to vote by 17 April. This can be easily done by going to www.gov.uk/register-to-vote.

Today's event at the Buttercross was a true coming together of pro-Europeans from many different groups, including the European Movement, Winchester Lib Dems, Winchester Labour, Romsey Better in Europe, The 48% - Winchester, and of course Win-IN.

Thank you so much to everybody who came along today and helped either by handing out leaflets, flags, stickers and badges, and/or talking to people, it was fantastic! In one of our activist's words: "Some 40 volunteers turned up"! And of course also a heartfelt thank you to the many, many concerned people who stopped and chatted with us and gave us their signatures and contact details.

In a little over two hours we collected 229 signatures for a petition going along with the Best for Britain #lucky7 campaign to be delivered to Steve Brine.

Even if you missed us today, you can still help! Please simply email Steve Brine (or your MP if you live in a different constituency) via the Best for Britain website, it only takes a few minutes to join in with the #lucky7 campaign. The email will be urging your MP to vote for Amendment 7 in parliament which will ensure a meaningful vote on the final deal on leaving the EU - including an option to remain if the outcome is not good for the UK!

And of course a proper action day wouldn't be complete with a counter protest and a suitably dressed dog:

Remember, each time you inspire someone to act, and each time they find someone to act, very soon that means your MP has heard from tens of people from their constituency that are registering their disapproval with Brexit.

A thought provoking evening - Difficult Conversations Training

On Tuesday evening we had 20 participants and two trainers at our Difficult Conversations Training session. People came from as far away as Dorset!

Many of the participants were keen to learn about how to get over the divisions that were created between them and family members and/or friends by different opinions about the 2016 referendum result (in many cases people simply don't talk about the 'elephant in the room' any more to keep the peace). Of course, some participants were also interested in using the information gained for campaigning on the street, engaging with the public.

Susie and Hywel, our trainers, took us through several activities that gave us a deeper insight in how communication between humans works and where we might actually be going wrong when talking about highly emotive subjects like Brexit.

Communication is never just sending 'pure information' (facts for example) from one person to the other. How a message is sent and received is influenced by basic things like body language, tone, selection of words used, but also more complex issues like the relationship between participants, beliefs held, experiences, etc. Most importantly, to have a successful exchange about a discussion topic, it depends on how open we are to what the other person is actually saying or trying to say and how we react to that.

If one side is simply not willing to listen (for example by always changing the topic), a conversation that will satisfy the needs of the initiator will not happen. In that case it might be best to accept that an exchange is not possible and to agree to disagree. This of course is often psychologically hard to bear, especially with family members or good friends, as it can cause feelings of despair, loneliness and powerlessness, and in the worst case depression.

However, if the right techniques are used, a conversation that would normally fail could result in a better outcome, so that at least both parties are feeling that they were heard and no side feels they 'lost'. Our trainers showed us that there are effective ways of stopping a conversation from blowing up or becoming one-sided. Part of that is to use different types of questioning techniques, to actually find the common ground that often even exists when positions seem to be worlds apart. The other important pillar for being heard by others is to work on effective persuasion and influencing skills.

The group did some mock Brexit discussions and tried out what was learnt so far. An outcome of this activity was that as a successful participant in an argument, you always have to not only have your own points in your mind but also what the other side might be coming up with, and how to engage with that (not necessarily counter it!). This in essence also puts you into an observer position, as you have to watch the whole time what is going on, to come up with the appropriate reaction.

Instead of simply disputing 'EU facts', quite often it might be better to ask in detail about why somebody felt they wanted to leave the EU, to question with them whether these reasons were really caused by the EU or whether they are actually home-made. A discussion like this should yield some common ground which connects people rather than divide them further. Once that is established the issue can be reframed and made personal.

Many of the participants were experienced and passionate, and there was a lot of sharing practice between the group. Some good tips and tricks were exchanged, giving people tools to use in their difficult conversations in the lead-up to Christmas.

The evening gave all participants plenty of food for thought, and some of the non-British participants realised during the session that there are also still some cultural differences they hadn't yet understood, despite being in the UK for a long time.

Difficult Conversations Training - Tuesday 28 November

Do you find it hard to talk about Brexit with your relatives or friends?

This training is for you if you want to:

Learn and practice some ways to manage conversations
Have a more positive outcome in your Brexit interactions
Increase confidence to be better able to handle challenging conversations
Support the #StopBrexit campaign and keep conversations going, keep the issues alive
Meet like-minded people, share concerns and build solidarity with others in the area
Be able to look forward to sharing Christmas with (all) family members

Where: Winchester Rugby Club

When: Tuesday 28th November, 19:30h – 21:30h

The training will be followed by an informal bar, open until 22:30h.

How much: £3 (in cash) per person at the door, to cover the costs of the hall and the bar staff.
(All organisation of the training is being done by volunteers.)

Win-IN is organising a Family Picnic & Walk

This is something we wanted to organise for quite a while - a FAMILY EVENT!

If the weather is good enough, we will be meeting at 11:30 am at the car park of a village near Winchester (you can go by bus if you don't have a car).

There is a nice playground and some picnic tables. Bring your own picnic (and a blanket just in case)! We can let the children have a play first, then we all have a picnic there, and whoever is still fit enough after that for a 4 km circular walk, can join in!

Brexit is Bonkers - another successful #StopBrexit event in Winchester

Lots of interest was shown again at the latest #StopBrexit event organised by Win-IN and The 48% - Winchester members and with the help of the European Movement (Hampshire branch) at the Buttercross in Winchester!

Like last time the organisers were joined by other members of the public who feel strongly about not leaving the EU and had dressed in blue and yellow and brought EU and UK flags along.

This time the activists not only had balloons, flags, and leaflets to hand out but also a flip board to find out what the public are thinking about Brexit - and the public responded! Here are some examples of what was written down:

"The EU = Checks and Balances"
"Have you noticed the increase in prices since June 2016? + HATE CRIMES ON INCREASE 50,000 more in Scotland alone"
"40 years of peace is worthwhile"
"Don't kid yourself that the US would help us with any trade agreement. Bombardier?"
"Brexit is a tax scam by the elite to avoid the EU tax avoidance directive due 2019!"
"We want another vote, we were told lies"
"Think of our youngsters future! We need to stay in Europe!"

There was lots of affirmation for the #StopBrexit cause as many people expressed in conversations that they were feeling leader- and directionless.

The group was also asking for support for a petition in regards to holding another referendum on the final Brexit deal (to truly give the public the power to say what kind of Brexit - if at all - they want). These will be put into a mailing list with the purpose of keeping recipients updated about upcoming #StopBrexit events and news (for in and around Winchester). Alternatively you can sign up to receive email updates from this website by entering your email address further up on that same tab.

14 October is the day of the nationwide regional rallies run by the 48%.

In the spirit of this, Win-IN and The 48% - Winchester are going to have another Pro-EU Gathering in Winchester, with some help by the European Movement!

Today we were again in London for yet another #StopBrexit march. As with all the other ones before attendants were in good spirits and had turned out in large numbers.

Winchester is a good place for a pro-EU gathering!

Today we had our Pro-EU gathering in Winchester at the Buttercross. It was a very friendly affair and while we encountered some Brexiters, the discussions remained civil. The great majority of people who approached us were agreeing with what we were there to represent: the will for the UK to remain a member state of the EU. Thank you to everybody who came along to support us!

The European Movement had set up their street stall from 2pm and some members of the Win-IN and The 48% - Winchester groups were there early to also join in with the fun of talking to people, and hand out EU flags to children and leaflets to interested grown-ups.

We had a some more people join us at 3pm which was the agreed time for our gathering. I only have a few photos which don't show all of the people who were there so this will have to do.

After this, a good number of us went to the pub to socialise a little among the different groups.

We are hoping to be working together with the European Movement again on organising some more of these afternoons!

They are gathering at the Buttercross in Winchester at 2pm and will join the Win-IN/The 48% - Winchester gathering at 3pm!

Wear something blue, bring a flag, come and support us! Spare just few minutes or couple of hours! It is the future of our children we are protecting.
