One of the biggest stories of the Mobile World Conference was the unveiling finally of Windows Mobile 7, rebranded as Windows Phone 7. The story within the story is how Microsoft abandoned the foundation established with the waning Windows Mobile platform, went back to the drawing board, and started from scratch for the latest incarnation of its mobile operating system.

Microsoft went back to the drawing board and borrowed from Apple's playbook for Windows Phone 7. The result is a completely new mobile platform from Microsoft which, at least from initial feedback and reviews, seems to be worthy of further consideration once Windows Phone 7 devices start hitting the streets.

Given the delays experienced by Microsoft in developing Windows Phone 7, expectations were high. Any minor, incremental improvement on the existing platform would have been virtually guaranteed to fail.

Windows Phone 7 was announced today in Mobile World Congress 2010 in Barcelona by Chief Executive Steve Ballmer.

Windows Mobile was started from scratch and became Windows Phone 7 Series. The interface is similar to Zune HD and some say that it will revolutionize the way that we use mobile phones and mobile devices.

According to the same source Windows Phone 7 Series runs faster than Windows Mobile 6.5 on the HTC HD2.

Why Microsoft had to announce windows phone 7

Microsoft is almost a full year away from releasing a working version of Windows Phone 7 Series (probably the ugliest name ever for an operating system/platform). So why did they announce it so early?

Main reason (if not the only) is to support the company's share value. Microsoft was building this software for the last 3 years in order to establish themselves as the mobile platform for the masses just like it happened with the desktop few years ago. Unfortunately they were very late and Apple managed to get to that position well before they could even react at all.

The future for Windows Phone 7

By the time Microsoft releases Windows Phone 7 Series, Apple store will have more than 200.000 applications, many million users, a few billion downloads and probably a few billion in revenue. By the time users begin to adopt Windows Phone 7 Series, Microsoft fixes the first bugs probably by releasing patches and hotfixes and at last users start to like, Apple will be way ahead.

And apple won't be the only one that will be in that game. Android, Symbian, Blackberry and others will be there to get a market share from Microsoft.

Windows Phone 7 Series was originally codenamed "Photon" and it is planned for release in late 2010. It was initially intented to be released in during 2009 but several delays prompted Microsoft to develop Windows Mobile 6.5 as an interim release.

During the Microsoft's Venture Capital Summit, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer delivered the keynote speech and he explained that Microsoft Windows Mobile was a screw up and that they had to release 6.5 instead of 7. After that they revamped the whole Windows Mobile team and Steve Ballmer promised that this (failure) will never happen again.
