Windpower Wales is pleased to announce that the amended Llys Dymper wind farm planning application was submitted to Conwy County Borough Council planning department on Thursday February 16th 2012. This submission for ten turbines with a maximum tip height of 110 metres follows the withdrawal of the previous application for 17 turbines with tip heights of 126 meters.

After full consultation with the community and relevant professional bodies, Windpower Wales has made significant changes to the project which include;

reducing the number of turbines from 17 to 10

reducing the height of the turbines from 126m to tip to a maximum of 110m to tip

Connecting to the grid at the local sub-station in Llansannan

A more direct access route to the site

Paying the monies for the Community fund directly to six local Community Councils

Establishing a high interest bond exclusively for local investors to contribute to the cost of building the project

The project, when built, would supply enough electricity to supply the equivalent annual demand of some 15,000 homes in North Wales

Over 150 delegates attended a conference at the Centre for Alternative Technology in Mid Wales today to discuss the future of the renewable energy industry in Wales. Conference organisers, Renewable Wales Network, were delighted at the turnout and the quality of the presentations. The conference, chaired by veteran green campaigner and ex MP, Cynog Dafis, heard a recorded address by First Minister, Carwyn Jones, presentations by Peter Davies, Sustainability Commissioner, Welsh Government and the economist, Professor Brian Morgan. A number of companies active in various aspects of Renewable Energy made presentations including Maybe Bridge, Jones Bros, Dulas Engineering, G24i, West Coast Energy and Tidal Energy.

After lunch and a number of breakout sessions, Countryside Council of Wales, Chief Executive, Roger Thomas addressed the conference. He was followed by Windpower Wales managing Director, Eryl Vaughan, who moved the resolution to form Renewable Wales Network as a representative body to promote renewable energy in Wales. Conference resolved to appoint a Steering Group to consider the feasibility of creating a new organisation and took nominations from the floor for the Steering Group. (LINK)

The Wales Air Ambulance birthday concert, which opened the Gwyl Gobaith festival in Northop, has been hailed a huge success.

X-Factor star Rhydian headlined the first night of the three-day music festival, with all proceeds direct to the lifesaving charity. The night was sponsored by long-standing supporter of Wales Air Ambulance, Windpower Wales, who transformed the opening night into a celebration to mark the charity’s tenth anniversary.

Eryl Vaughan, managing director of Windpower Wales, said:

“We were keen to sponsor the opening night of Gwyl Gobaith and see the proceeds go to the Wales Air Ambulance.

“The birthday concert really kicked off what is a fantastic music festival for North Wales.”

It is time for the renewable energy industry and its supporters to work together to communicate a shared vision to build a sustainable, low carbon Wales and rebuild confidence and trust in the future of our Welsh green economy, according to key representatives and supporters of the renewables sector in Wales.

At a meeting at the National Eisteddfod in Wrexham involving representatives from across the renewable energy sector, there were calls for more action to promote and communicate the economic, environmental and community benefits of sustainable energy. The meeting unanimously agreed to organise a conference in October that would lead to the launch of a broad organisation to speak for all individuals and organisations that want to see Wales do more to generate electricity from renewable sources.

At the event, chaired by former MP and Assembly Member Cynog Dafis and which also heard from Sir John Houghton and Professor Brian Morgan of UWIC, Mr Eryl Vaughan, Managing Director of Windpower Wales expressed concern at the lack of progress in meeting renewable energy targets in Wales and stated that a new vision is needed to deliver a successful future for clean energy generation in Wales.

Speaking at the seminar, Mr Eryl Vaughan recognised that delivering the long term vision offered through the renewable energy sector in Wales can be challenging at a local level:

"I was very pleased to take part in the meeting at the National Eisteddfod and to share the stage with such eminent people, because I passionately believe that the renewable energy industry holds the key to creating a prosperous Welsh economy for the future and to sustaining our environment, our communities and our culture.

"Current protests against wind energy are threatening the development of all forms of low carbon energy. They will starve our communities of vital investment in regeneration, jobs and infrastructure and obstruct the development of green skills, training and research, which could revitalise our manufacturing industry to the benefit of many small and large businesses in Wales.

"I hope that from this meeting and the October conference we will see the start of a more inclusive vision to promote all sources of renewable energy, through strong leadership, public and political engagement."

Professor Brian Morgan added: “We need to work with communities and highlight the many benefits that the industry offers to the economic and environmental well-being of Wales.

"Wales has an important role to play in the climate change agenda, but the industry must work together, in partnership with local communities, with the courage to stand up for our vision for a green economy. Only then will we share in the growing world trend for clean energy and sustainable growth and make the changes that will secure a sustainable future for the generations to come."

Representatives from across the renewables sector will be invited to attend the conference in October at the Centre for Alternative Technology in Machynlleth, to help build a plan to get Wales on track towards a low carbon future.

An application for a wind farm on Denbigh Moor has blown into a storm of concern from local people.

Hundreds of residents from Gwytherin, Llangernyw and Llansannan, who are against the proposed Llys Dymper site, have spoken out against Windpower Wales’ plans for 14 wind turbines.

After a number of emergency meetings by residents they raised the following concerns, which Windpower Wales has answered via the Weekly News.

With the exception of energy from waste plants (or incinerators) few things raise the hackles of rural residents in Wales more than the announcement that a large foreign energy company is planning to put up a wind farm on their doorsteps.

One man believes he has the answer. What if the company developing the wind farm was almost entirely owned by local shareholders and was committed to returning a substantial proportion of its revenue to the local community?

Playing the trumpet is like being a dancer or sports athlete believes musician Alison Balsom, because of the stamina needed to play the instrument for a lengthy concert.

The Classical Brits award winner should know, as she’s played the trumpet since she was just seven.

She will be performing at North Wales International Music Festival in St Asaph Cathedral on September 20 – with the concert appropriately sponsored by Windpower Wales.
