A series of boarded-up and burnt-out townhouses on Erie Street in Midtown have started to be demolished under the City of Windsor’s blight mitigation strategy.

The City of Windsor’s Building Department is proceeding with demolition of an eight-unit townhouse building located at 501 Erie Street West between Bruce and Janette that has sat vacant for over half a decade and costs for demolition will be added to the taxes of the property owner.

Bylaw inspectors have paid 84 visits to the site since around 2005 and issued 12 building orders. Since then, the site has been borded up and secured by the City to prevent illegal access and the potential for vandalism and fires such as one nearby at 411 Elliott in 2011 which cost the fire department $17,561.31.

Disconnection of utilities and gutting of the interior started in January and once complete, the property will be leveled.

Local band The Blue Stones are trading in colour for some black and white concepts.

Collaborating with Windsor video director/producer Gavin Michael Booth, all involved are hosting a video release party for the song Vein Vixens. Set to kick-off at 9 p.m. on Saturday, February 4, the shindig will be held downtown at Villains Beastro Pub.

“It’s lining up to be a great night,” said Booth in a press release for the event. “Support the local talent and sponsors that made this video possible and catch a great live show from the band.”

Filmed at the premiere site a month prior, the black and white video centers around a woman seeking revenge against band members Justin Tessier and Tarek Jafar. Following its premier, the duo will hit the pub’s stage for a short set before spending the night with friends and family. No cover charge is required to enter and those who are 19+ are welcome to attend.

Following their previous collaboration with Booth, a video for I’m A Stereo using iPhone 4 technology and receiving over 30,000 hits online, everyone was glad to team up again. The band also felt the concept was a natural extension of their image.

“We wear nothing but full three piece suits in our live performance,” said Jafar in the press release. “Blending that seamlessly into a concept in an era past just made sense from the get go.”

Vein Vixens marks Booth’s 29th video in just over a year and continues his practice of using cast, crew and extras mostly from Windsor: For more on the work he and his Mimetic Entertainment production company have done, you can visit their youtube page. Canada’s extreme ice racers are getting primed to compete in regional qualifying events across the country for a chance to take on the massive urban ice track at Red Bull Crashed Ice World Championship 2012 in Quebec City.

More than 10,000 intrepid male and female adrenaline junkies nationwide – 248 in Windsor alone – registered online, and after a random lottery selection, 220 daredevils from Windsor are now competing for the chance to head to Quebec City to race against the world’s top ice cross downhill athletes at the epic final world-tour stop on March 15-17, 2012.

Windsor’s qualifier will take place at the WFCU Centre on February 10th at 6pm.

The format: The participants—200 men and 20 women—will compete in individual speed trials on a flat ice surface in a traditional indoor hockey rink. The top skaters (5 men and 1 woman from the Windsor qualifier) who demonstrate skating skill, agility, strategy, and strength will move on to participate in the main event in Quebec City, where consecutive heats of four skaters will race head-to-head in a double elimination bracket, based on time.

Additional spots open: A second chance is given to all registrants who were not selected by the lottery or missed the registration deadline, as Red Bull Crashed Ice will also allow 50 walk-up spots per qualifying city (as time permits and registration allows). The 50 walk-ups (first come, first served) will join the 200 men and 20 women selected via the lottery eligible to take part in the qualifiers as they all vie to skate into Quebec City in 2012.

Icy action ahead: Only the quickest and sharpest men and women from Windsor will travel to Quebec City to tackle the monolithic urban ice track (with a 60m vertical).
