It is with great delight that I can officially announce that Winton Arts and Media College is out of special measures with many Good features. This is as a result of a huge effort from students, staff, parents, and the wider community. Some highlights to share with you include:

Behaviour and safety has been graded – GOOD.
Leadership and Management has been graded – GOOD.
The headteacher provides inspiring leadership and has made improving teaching, learning and behaviour his highest priorities. Staff morale is high and the whole school community is working together towards a shared vision of excellence. Underperformance has been tackled robustly and the proportion of good and outstanding lessons is steadily rising because teachers are provided with personalised coaching and support.
Students appreciate the consistency and fairness of the new procedures for managing behaviour and say that disruption to lessons is rare. Good behaviour, with very popular reward systems for effort and progress, has increased motivation and students are taking more responsibility for their learning. Bullying of any form is not tolerated and the atmosphere in school is happy, calm and purposeful.
The successful focus on improving teaching, behaviour and attendance has led to faster progress in lessons. Students’ achievement in English is good. The school has successfully closed the gap in performance between those students known to be eligible for free school meals and their peers.
Teachers are increasingly focused on ensuring that students are provided with clear objectives and a wide range of activities in lessons that are stimulating and meet their needs.

Win a chance to study at a University summer school

Unique opportunity for our students to study in Hong Kong this summer!

Students have a chance to win a chance to study at a University summer school. British Council Hong Kong have a submission deadline of Monday 29 May, so you need to act quick.
Hong Kong is Asia’s world city, a place where East meets West, blending Chinese and Western cultures. Now your pupils have an opportunity to study in this dream destination. The objective of the competition is to enable British students to better understand Hong Kong’s advantages as a regional education hub and to consider pursuing tertiary education in Hong Kong.

To enter students must be:
1.    a British citizen without right of abode or right to land in Hong Kong;
2.    aged 18 or above as at 1 June 2012 (or if below 18, able to find a legal guardian whilst in Hong Kong);
3.    studying full time at a secondary school in the UK;
4.    able to speak fluent English;
5.    given the consent to participate in the Competition by his parent or legal guardian; and
6.    able to support himself financially whilst in Hong Kong.

Winners will be sponsored to visit Hong Kong and study at one of the summer courses for high school students at a Hong Kong university. Upon their return to the UK, the winners will be required to submit a report to the organiser, and to share their experience at media interviews and at some selected secondary schools in the UK, and write an article to be published in an education journal.
To enter students must complete an application available to download here. The deadline for submission is 29 May 2012.
