Washington – In response to the Senate’s failure to pass S.J.Res. 90, the bipartisan Kaine-Schiff-Paul War Powers Resolution to prevent President Trump’s unauthorized military operations in Venezuela, Win Without War Executive Director Sara Haghdoosti released the following statement:

“After more than two months of murders at sea and a clear White House effort to lay legal groundwork for strikes inside Venezuela, too many senators looked away rather than face the truth: Donald Trump wants a blank check for war. If Congress continues shredding its own war powers, he may get it.

“This vote wasn’t just a procedural failure — it was a moral one. Every missile launched without authorization erodes the rule of law, and every silence from Congress makes the next war easier to start. History will remember the senators who voted ‘yes’ as those who stood up for the Constitution. The rest chose complicity over courage.

“People in Latin America face egregious harms as a result of the Senate’s failure tonight, and our democracy does as well. Congress must act quickly to ensure those harms do not grow into another all-out, endless war.”

WASHINGTON — Win Without War and Win Without War Education Fund are excited to announce their next chapter as they begin their 24th year of working for a more peaceful and progressive U.S. foreign policy.

On November 7, Executive Director Sara Haghdoosti will be stepping down after more than five years with the team, including nearly four as Executive Director. The Win Without War and Win Without War Education Fund Boards will be announcing a transition plan shortly. During the transitionary period, Deputy Director Shayna Lewis will be running day-to-day operations.

“While Sara will be deeply missed, we’re excited for her to take this next step,” said Shayna Lewis. “I’m confident in the team’s ability to stay the course and keep working to build a world where people are safe, no matter what the Trump administration throws our way.”

Speaking about her experience at the organizations, Sara Haghdoosti said, “It has been the honor of a lifetime working at Win Without War, and amplifying the voices of our hundreds of thousands of activists across the country that want to see solutions instead of war and violence.”

“We are deeply grateful for Sara’s exceptional leadership and tireless advocacy for a more peaceful world. Win Without War has grown tremendously under Sara’s stewardship, and the work she and the team have accomplished has provided a much-needed beacon of hope in these dark times,” said Win Without War Board Member Stephen Miles.

Win Without War will be hosting an event in Washington, DC to recognize and celebrate Sara’s service to the organization later this year. Details to follow.

Washington – Win Without War Executive Director Sara Haghdoosti made the following statement in response to reports of escalating mass killings committed by the UAE-backed Rapid Support Forces rebel group in Darfur:

“We are horrified by reports of mass killings in Darfur, which represents only the latest atrocity in a brutal civil war that has killed tens of thousands and displaced millions. This violence has been prolonged by the United Arab Emirates’ (UAE) support for the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) rebel group, which has been accused of genocide by both local organizations and the U.S. State Department and carried out the killings that made headlines this week.

“Despite the atrocities fueled by Emirati weapons pouring into Sudan, the Trump and Biden administrations have shamefully avoided pressuring the UAE, which itself relies on American weaponry and security guarantees, to end support for the RSF.

“We call upon Congress and President Trump to use their leverage now to end UAE support for the killings in Sudan.”

“We are relieved that there has been a breakthrough in negotiations for a ceasefire in Gaza. The prospect of families being reunited, troops being withdrawn, food and medicine entering Gaza, and an end to the Israeli government’s genocide is a welcome ray of hope in a dark time.

“Turning those prospects into a lasting peace, however, will not be simple or straightforward. Implementing this first phase of an agreement in a way that saves lives and ends the ongoing humanitarian disaster the Israeli government has imposed on Gaza will require continued attention and pressure, especially from the United States government on the Israeli government. Prime Minister Netanyahu has long sought to perpetuate and expand this war, and has repeatedly done so, amidst other similar diplomatic breakthroughs.

“In the long run, any agreement to end the Gaza conflict must respect Palestinians’ fundamental right of self-determination. We call on members of Congress to remain heavily engaged as negotiations continue, and to use their power and leverage with the Israeli government to help ensure aid is reaching Palestinians and a settlement that ensures peace and dignity for all in the region.”

Washington – Win Without War Government Relations Director Eric Eikenberry made the following statement in response to last night’s Senate vote on a War Powers Resolution to terminate military operations in the Caribbean:

“It is outrageous that 51 U.S. Senators voted last night to rubber-stamp the Trump administration’s ongoing lawless campaign of extrajudicial killings in the Caribbean Sea. A bare majority of Senators, out of cowardice, indifference, or both, endorsed murder by presidential decree. As Trump kills unidentified individuals merely suspected of committing a crime and courts needless war with Maduro’s government in Venezuela, his claim to be a ‘peace’ president grows more farcical by the day.

“Still, last night’s vote represents the start, not the end, of opposition to Trump’s lawless aggression in Latin America. Trump thinks he can cry ‘narcoterrorism’ to cow Congress and people across the country from standing up to his assault on the Constitution. But nearly half of the Senate, and a majority of people in this country reject Trump’s authoritarian misuse of the military.

“We commend Senators Adam Schiff and Tim Kaine for introducing this resolution and demonstrating the leadership sorely needed in the struggle against authoritarian overreach and unilateral executive warmongering, and thank the 48 Senators who voted with them to uphold one of the most fundamental tenets of the Constitution – Congress, the branch closest to the people, decides when and whether the United States goes to war.”

###

Washington – Win Without War Executive Director Sara Haghdoosti made the following statement in response to reports that the Trump administration plans to investigate Open Society Foundations:

“We condemn Trump’s attempt to silence dissent and weaken civil liberties by launching a politically motivated investigation into the Open Society Foundations. Trump’s politicized investigation shows just how much this administration feels its authoritarian project is threatened by Open Society Foundations’ work to defend democracy and civil liberties, and is a reminder of why we must stand in solidarity with those who land in Trump’s crosshairs.

“We must all call out this baseless investigation for what it is: An authoritarian attempt to quash dissent.”

Washington – Win Without War launches awareness campaign for military service members at risk of facing unlawful orders.

Today, Win Without War launched NotWhatYouSignedUpFor.org, a website built to connect active duty, national guard, and reserve members of the military with key resources on responding to unlawful orders, seeking discharge from the military, and understanding their rights while in uniform. National Guard troops deployed in Washington, DC will see advertising for the site starting today.

We want our troops to know someone has their back—because this administration doesn’t. With President Trump threatening “war” on the city of Chicago and already deploying armed military units into the streets of Los Angeles and D.C., our troops risk being forced into situations that are not legal, that they aren’t trained for, or that violate their conscience. This is not what they signed up for.

Because the Trump administration is putting our military service members at elevated legal, moral, and even physical risk, it’s more important than ever that our troops understand their rights and options for serving honorably.

We are proud to highlight the work of principled organizations experienced in counseling service members, including About Face, the GI Rights Hotline, and the National Lawyers Guild Military Law Task Force.

Donald Trump is making it harder than ever for service members to uphold their oaths to the constitution. We hope that access to know-your-rights resources will help ease their burden.

Washington – Win Without War Executive Director Sara Haghdoosti made the following statement in response to the Trump administration’s unauthorized missile strike against alleged drug smugglers in the Caribbean Sea:

“The War on Drugs is a failure, and bringing it back with extra violence won’t turn it into a success. Yesterday’s brazenly unlawful strike makes no difference whatsoever in the lives of people struggling with their own or a loved one’s addiction. It does not restore the proven methods for reducing overdose deaths that Trump’s budget cuts have ravaged.

“Instead, the strike has done what it was actually intended to do: grow Trump’s reputation as a strongman who can ignore the Constitution he has sworn to protect and uphold. What we’ve seen is a summary execution, conducted with no oversight or Congressional approval, for which the administration has offered neither evidence nor legal justification. Donald Trump has brought George W. Bush’s dream to full fruition: under Trump, if the president declares you a terrorist, the U.S. military will apparently execute you on his behalf, no questions asked. That should deeply alarm us all, especially at a time when the president thinks nothing of labeling anyone from a USAID worker to a college student as a terrorist.

“There is no military solution to the overdose crisis, but there is a political solution to a president with authoritarian ambitions. Congress must act now to end unauthorized military action in the Caribbean, investigate these apparently lawless killings, and restore the proven health and harm reduction programs that people struggling with the scourge of fentanyl desperately need.”
