      <title>Something Huge Is Happening with Amazon</title>

        <![CDATA[<p>This post is longer than usual because we need to talk about <strong><span>Amazon (AMZN) and my thesis that this company is on the verge of something huge and game changing</span></strong> (the stock action is starting to indicate it too I believe).<span> <strong>I can now envision a day when we read most newspapers, magazines and books on an electronic /wireless device.</strong></span> In this case...<strong> Amazon's Kindle.</strong></p><p>First off, most <strong>people want (and need) the mobility</strong> of reading books, magazines, and papers away from their computer..so this stuff won't go online. We read books, magazines and papers everywhere...planes, trains, parks, beaches, bed, bathroom, classrooms, offices, couch, etc. We want it in our hot little hand...the lighter and smaller (within reason) the better.</p>]]>

        <![CDATA[<p>After scanning seven thousand charts as I usually do every weekend, I've come up with this week's weekly stock pick. The scan produced mostly short-sell candidates this week. The scan did produce a long candidate on a weekly basis that grabbed my attention. Being that it's a pick from scanned weekly data, this pick could take longer to move one way or the other because it was based on weekly chart and quote data, instead of daily data. None the less, picks like this have the potential to earn the most amount of return on investment in the long term.</p>
<p>My weekly stock pick this week is a long position candidate. Tuckcell Telecom (TKC)<!--more-->.</p>]]>

spectrum auction in the UK - referred to as "low power GSM", it
represented a sliver of frequencies that were formerly a "guard band"
between GSM @ 1800MHz and DECT. There wasn't enough spectrum to build
out a national network, and it was expected that instead it would just
be used for low-power indoor coverage, typically with picocells. And
rather than selling the spectrum to a single operator, it was suggested
that multiple indoor providers could share it - with operators expected
to work with each other to avoid interference.<!--more--></p>

        <![CDATA[<p>About 18 months ago, I wrote a deliberately provocative <a href="http://disruptivewireless.blogspot.com/2006/07/tyranny-of-sim-card.html">post </a>titled "<em>The Tyranny of the SIM Card</em>".
It tackled the thorny issue of whether the SIM (which is essentially
'an operator on a chip') should maintain its central role as old-school
cellular telephony moved towards FMC or triple/quadplay.</p>
<p>In an FMC world, if you don't have a SIM in <em>everything</em> that you connect to the network (phones, PC, TV etc), does it still make sense to have a SIM in <em>anything</em>?A discussion I had recently with a company called <a href="http://www.blueslice.com/en-ca/home.html">Blueslice </a>(which primarily makes advanced variants of HLRs for mobile networks) has sparked off a revision of my thoughts.</p>]]>

"PSTN replacement" form of VoIP. Supposedly, it will enable both
fixed-line [TISPAN] and mobile operators to deploy a single,
bearer-independent telephony application that will supplant existing
circuit telephony and bring new revenues from its ability to blend
speech with video, messaging and other elements. It will be, allegedly,
the basis for Telephony 2.0. It's called IMS Multimedia Telephony, or more briefly, MMtel.</p><!--more-->
<p>Ericsson
(ERIC) takes every opportunity to talk it up, insisting that it will drive IMS
business cases, be usable over everything from DSL to HSPA to LTE, will
help operators defend against 3rd-party VoIP, and may even itself be a
developer platform. But if you haven't heard of it before, I
wouldn't be at all surprised. Almost nobody has. I ask plenty of people
who should have heard of it - operator applications people,
interoperability bodies like the MSF who work on IMS interconnection, a
variety of SBC vendors, VoIP specialists, handset platform providers.
Almost universally, I get blank stares when I ask "<em>what do you think of MMTel?</em>". </p>]]>

        <![CDATA[<p>A few months ago, I published a quite controversial <a href="http://www.disruptive-analysis.com/voipo3g.htm">report about VoIPo3G</a>.
I said that I expected as many as 250m users of fully mobile VoIP by
the end of 2012 - mostly driven by the operators themselves, rather
than independent players like Skype and Truphone - although
partnerships between the two groups would also be important.<!--more--></p>

I
stated that this was particularly because operators will want to
exploit greater spectral efficiencies for packet voice, that become
possible in later versions of 3.5G. I also argued that because LTE,
WiMAX and UMB are all-IP, it was inevitable that we would ultimately
end up with full mobile VoIP, and that the question was then about the
timelines and roadmap. Moreover, I said that I thought that VoIPo3G (or
VoIPo4G if that’s how LTE etc become defined) would quickly overtake

<p><strong>Research In Motion's (RIMM)</strong> Blackberry has long been the corporate phone of choice, but <a href="http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20071219.wrRIM19/BNStory/Technology/?page=rss&id=RTGAM.20071219.wrRIM19">a report in Canada's Globe and Mail</a> says the company has launched an important move to grab market share in the consumer cell phone segment in the U.S.<!--more--> Consumer-geared versions of the Blackberry, such as the Pearl, already contribute about 30% of RIMM's revenue. <img src="http://static.seekingalpha.com/uploads/2007/12/19/rimm.gif" style="float: right; margin-left: 2px" />Now the company is looking to strengthen its foothold by releasing a touch screen phone that resemble's Apple's hugely-successful iPhone, as well as a new version of the Pearl that will offer a QWERTY-like keyboard, according to a research note by GMP Securities analyst Ray Sharma. Also, the company opened its first retail outlet last week in a suburb of Detroit. Sharma sees February as an early release date for the new phones, although he says it is not yet definite the phones will go into production. Increased costs will come with the new source of revenue, including manufacturing, tech support, and sales force education. "It's much more expensive," Info-Tech Research Group analyst Michelle Warren said. "But it opens up the market for them and they are in a position where they can expand their offerings." potential bidders in the upcoming 700 MHz spectrum auction. <!--more-->The FCC Wednesday issued two lists of potential bidders: those with <a href="http://hraunfoss.fcc.gov/edocs_public/attachmatch/DA-07-5030A2.pdf">applications considered to be complete</a>, and <a href="http://hraunfoss.fcc.gov/edocs_public/attachmatch/DA-07-5030A3.pdf">those that have incomplete applications</a>.
The lists includes a large number of obscure bidders, along with some
household names. The spectrum auction consists of five blocks, each
with different characteristics; the information released today does not
indicate which blocks the bidders are targeting.</p>

        <![CDATA[<p>Iowa Telecommunications (IWA) provides wireline and other services
to customers in rural Iowa.<!--more--> For a high yield dividend  investor Iowa is
attractive for its consistent revenues and cash flow. Let me
illustrate: third quarter 2007 revenues  and EBITDA were both just 2%
over the same period last year. This is a high margin business too:
Adjusted EBITDA is over 50% of revenues. We especially like that Free
Cash Flow (which we define as EBITDA less interest and capital
expenditures and cash taxes) is well in excess of the current dividend.
The Company has been using the extra money to pay down debt which is a
little high at $485mn. Still debt is manageable, with cash flow after
capex and cash taxes covering interest over 3X. </p>

      <description>&lt;strong&gt;&lt;a href='http://www.southlandcapitalpartners.com/'&gt;Nicholas Marshi&lt;/a&gt; submits:&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;p&gt;Iowa Telecommunications (IWA) provides wireline and other services
to customers in rural Iowa.&lt;!--more--&gt; For a high yield dividend  investor Iowa is
attractive for its consistent revenues and cash flow. Let me
illustrate: third quarter 2007 revenues  and EBITDA were both just 2%
over the same period last year. This is a high margin business too:
Adjusted EBITDA is over 50% of revenues. We especially like that Free
Cash Flow (which we define as EBITDA less interest and capital
expenditures and cash taxes) is well in excess of the current dividend.
The Company has been using the extra money to pay down debt which is a
little high at $485mn. Still debt is manageable, with cash flow after
capex and cash taxes covering interest over 3X. &lt;/p&gt;
