Hi. I'm considering purchasing a Marshall Haze combo amp or a Peavey 6505 combo, and I can't decide which one would be better for what I want to play.

I play mostly metal/hard rock.

Any suggestions?

Hey Michael,

It depends -- there's no one magic bullet solution for everything, and with so many variables involved it's hard for me to tell you what's the best next move for your current situation.

I've only recorded a few bands with that many guitarists playing, but I can tell you - it's a challenge to make things sounds cohesive AND textured at the same time. 90% of it is what the players are playing. If you are all strumming the same parts at the same time, it doesn't matter what amps/guitars/pedals you are running through - it's all going to turn into one giant muddy mess!

But with that said, I'll assume you guys have your act together! Test out a compressor pedal with your mates -- I always put it first in my effects chain, but it's personal preference to an extent. Be gentle with it though, less is more is very true with any type of compression, unless it is really being used as an effect. You don't want to compress the hell out of all your instruments because then you'll have NO dynamics whatsoever. You want you quiet parts to sound quiet, and loud parts to be loud. A compressor/limiter should be used with caution, as it can really deflate and neutralize an otherwise rockin' band.

You may want to look into the Boss NS-2 noise reducer pedal. This thing does wonders on tightening up your sound. Especially if you guys are running a bunch of single-coil fenders, those are sure to make some static on-stage. The NS-2 cleans all that shit up, without too much damage to your tone. Do a search for it on here.

Hope this helps -

In my band,we have 3 guitars and bass (2 guitarists, and I play and sing)..We often get told we pull it off better than most,But we KNOW we have a lot of improving that can be done. Im thinking maybe each of us guitars run a compressor/Limiter to "tighten" up the stage sound,so its not SO overpowering and as close to the album recordings than we have it already. Whats your thoughts? Thank you so much!

i think they are new because the site looks different every time i go and a little unfinished. i found it while doing a google search for a martin acoustic and landed onto a review page. Apparently they have reviews from harmony-central.com tied into their products, which is actually pretty cool. A lot of other site like guitar center or amazon have short and crapy reviews, but harmony-central is notorious for having super long detailed reviews, so I guess it's cool to see them right with the product prices. you're right though, there isn't a real community on the site. i bookmarked it just in case they keep updating it, because i do think the all-in-one eBay listings is pretty cool. yeah it's a middle man site, but so is the whole internet. i think it's a good effort and i'll check bakc once and a while

Theres really no point to going to cheapersounds if your looking to shop for gear. There is no REAL community and its just a middle man to the big sites like ebay and other retailers. But if your looking for a quick reference it works. Does anyone use this site?

Easy to find on the Fender website that this amp weighs 53 lbs, not 70. I have one and have weighed it myself to confirm. Clean tones are hard to beat. This amp also produces very smooth, harmonically rich distortion when turned up to 5 and beyond. By the way, this is typically too loud for a small club. I use an Ultimate Attenuator to turn my 57 Twin Reissue up to 8 (it's sweet spot) and still maintain an acceptable volume level for small venues. Sweet. No longer any need for drive pedals. Best sounding amp I've ever had. Been playing over 40 years and had many, many amps. If you've heard Cream Reunion at Royal Albert Hall DVD, either Eric Clapton Crossroads DVD or Concert for George DVD, you have heard a Clapton Stratocaster plugged directly into this amp. Quality!
