WiseWood Veneer Introduces a Reconstituted Veneers Line

WiseWood Veneer is pleased to offer their reconstituted wood veneer product line as an environmentally friendly alternative to some of the more rare and expensive exotic wood species. It is sometimes referred to as Engineered or Composite veneer and is a great option for those projects where veneer color and consistency is critical from start to finish. Made from rapidly renewable trees in managed forests, reconstituted veneer is produced by laminating different colors of dyed veneer in alternating layers. This process produces natural looking wood grains and colors thought only to exist in nature… until now.

The new species include: Bamboo, Cherry, Macassar Ebony, Birdseye Maple, Rift White Oak, South American Rosewood, Teak, Wenge and Zebrawood.

“The Wenge, Rosewood, and Teak are remarkably close to their natural counterparts, the color is great” says Geoff Brickner, WiseWood Veneer’s president. “These are a great substitute when the species is limited or unavailable due to export such as in the case of Teak right now”, Brickner added.

Some of the key features and benefits:

- Environmentally friendly and responsibly produced
- Free from natural defects and anomalies
- Color and grain consistent from sheet to sheet
- Real wood, not plastic laminate
- More affordable than many expensive exotic species
- Available in a variety of backers

“The consistency from sheet to sheet offers an attractive solution to customers such as Retail Fixture companies in particular that need to do such large areas where matching is critical. Oftentimes they simply would not be able to get this type of matching with many species of standard veneer” Brickner added.

WiseWood Veneer Adds New Species To Their Stock

WiseWood Veneer is excited to announce the addition of two new exotic species to their ever expanding inventory. The new species include Bubinga and Padauk wood veneer. WiseWood Veneer has taken notice in the trend that has been developing over the years. The beauty and warmth of wood has always been a popular choice, but now more than ever the trend is moving towards exotic species.

Bubinga originates from Africa and is a rich pinkish medium red brown color with darker crimson to deeper dark brown veining that defines the cathedrals. Bubinga wood veneer can be quarter cut or rotary cut (often called Kevazingo or African Rosewood) and can have an array of figure types such as mottled, fiddleback, or pomele. Bubinga is often used for making instruments such as guitars and drums and can be found in luxury cars as well. This beautiful wood is also a favorite of architectural furniture makers as it is easy to work with and is perfect to showcase some of their amazing work.

Padauk also originates from Africa. This wood is typically a vivid red orange to bright red color that ages to a deep crimson brown color. It generally has straight grain with a moderately coarse texture and large pores. It is well suited for architectural woodworking and inlays. Padauk finishes to a beautiful sheen without the need for stain.

“We are committed to listening to our customers. Whether it’s a new species or custom size veneer request, our goal is to make every effort to get it”, said Christine Yarbrough, WiseWood Veneer’s Vice President. “We are very excited to add these species to our growing inventory. Our focus is to keep in stock the most popular veneers while maintaining low prices for our customers”, Yarbrough added.

WiseWood Veneer offers domestic and exotic flexible wood veneers from all over the world.

What Is Flexible Wood Veneer?

Flexible veneer is real wood. The wood is sliced very thin, approximately 1/50”, and made into sheets of varying sizes. These veneer faces are then permanently bonded to paper back, poly resin back or wood backing material and processed to become flexible and more durable at the same time.

What Is 10 Mil And 20 Mil Paperback in regards to wood veneer?

The 10 or 20 refers to the thickness of the backing material, in this case paperback. The thickness of 1 mil equals 1/1000” so in the case of a 10 mil veneer the backer thickness is 10/1000”. Equally, in the case of 20 mil veneer the backer thickness is 20/1000”. In both cases the thickness of the wood veneer face is the same.

Is The Wood Veneer Ready To Use When I Receive It?

Generally speaking it is ready to use right out of the box but there is an important step to take before you begin any project. Because wood will react to environmental conditions such as temperature and relative humidity or dry conditions it is advisable to allow the veneer to acclimate to the conditions in your work space prior to using it. This can be accomplished by removing it from the box at least 48 hours to up to 4 days prior to the time you will be using it.

Will My Wood Veneer Look Like The Picture On Your Website?

There are many factors that influence the color, grain and appearance of natural wood veneer so the picture you see on our website is a representative sample of that species of veneer. The veneer you receive can be slightly different in color and grain appearance because each tree growing in nature is unique unto itself. Another reason for a difference in color is that you are viewing a sample picture on a digital computer monitor and colors will not reproduce the same on all monitors.

Can I Get Flexible Wood Veneer Sheets That Are Matched?

Yes it’s quite common to be able to get consecutively matched sheets from the same log. You have to specify during the order process that you want “Sequence Matching”. This is normally possible on 3 to 6 sheets or more but there are some exceptions. There is an option for sequence matching during checkout and there is a small up charge. When appearance is critical this is the only way to ensure that all of your wood veneer will look the same.

What Surfaces Can I Apply Wood Veneer To?

The best surfaces or “substrates” for wood veneering are MDF, particle Board and cabinet grade plywood in that order. It is ok to veneer over hardwood when necessary and there are some other surfaces that can be successfully veneered. When in doubt it’s best to utilize our Technical Support team for more specific applications. WiseWood Veneer doesn’t recommend applying our wood veneer directly to drywall or plaster wall surfaces.

Does Flexible Wood Veneer Need To Be Sanded?

Yes. Even though our flexible wood veneer is sanded during manufacturing you will not have good finishing results unless you properly sand it. We suggest sanding with a normal progression of 120 to 150 to 180 grit sandpaper. It can be machine sanded but if you’re not comfortable with that method then thorough hand sanding with a sanding block is fine. Once the wood veneer is sanded it should be finished right away or you may have to repeat the process or worse, you may end up with lifting or de-lamination problems.

What Is PSA Wood Veneer?

PSA Wood Veneer is paperback wood veneer with a Pressure Sensitive Adhesive applied to the back. This Pressure Sensitive Adhesive, commonly referred to as peel and stick, is specially formulated for wood veneer applications. Wisewood Veneer is proud to offer only 3M adhesive on our product. PSA Wood Veneer is easy to use and because the adhesive is conveniently applied it eliminates the need for messy glues. This veneer is ideal for re-facing such things as kitchen cabinets, speaker cabinets and much more.

How Will The Wood Veneer Be Shipped?

Because of its excellent flexibility we are able to roll it and ship it in boxes. The box will be 4’ in length but the height and width will be determined by how many sheets of flexible veneer are being shipped.

When Will The Order Be Shipped?

We carry all of our wood veneer in stock and it will ship the same day if the order is placed by 1:00 PM EST. Using our standard shipping we can promise delivery in 2-3 business days anywhere in the Lower 48 States. Of course if you need your order faster we can expedite it at an additional cost.

Preparation

When you first receive your veneer inspect it thoroughly for satisfaction of grade and quality prior to lamination. Next it’s very important to allow your veneer to acclimate prior to use. This is done by laying the veneer flat on a surface and allowing it to “relax” in your environment for a minimum of 48 hours up to 4 days. It may be necessary to apply some weight on the ends of the sheet to help retain its flatness during this period. The ideal environment for this process is between 35% and 50% relative humidity and temperature levels between 65 to 80 degrees F. It is also important to allow your substrate material to acclimate in the same conditions for the same amount of time as the veneer. This will ensure that materials will be relatively equal in terms of relative moisture and temperature.

Tools and Supplies

Before starting your veneering project you’ll want to gather some basic tools and supplies. You will need 120 grit sandpaper, tack cloth, denatured alcohol, a sharp utility or exacto knife and a veneer scraper. Veneer scrapers can be purchased commercially and typically consist of a wooden handle and a stiff blade of polycarbonate or lexan about 4” wide. You can also make one by using a piece of hardwood approximately 4” wide by 12 to 16” in length. Make sure one end is cut nice and straight and use sandpaper to gently ease the corners and edge to eliminate any sharp lines. If you want you can also contour the upper portion of the handle to create a comfortable grip. With this smoothing blade you will generate excellent leverage and good pressure on the surface. We don’t advocate the use of any type of J-roller for veneer application. You will not generate enough pressure with any type of J-roller.

Surface Preparation

Your substrate, or the surface you are going to laminate, needs to be prepped prior to veneering with PSA veneer. For finished surfaces you will need to scuff sand the entire surface with a medium (120 grit) sandpaper. After sanding remove all sanding dust and residue with tack cloth and wipe the surface clean with denatured alcohol. If you plan to veneer on an unfinished wood surface or plywood it is recommended that you first seal the surface with a coat of varnish, shellac or polyurethane finish. Allow the finish ample drying time, usually 24 hours, and then continue on with the veneer application.

Veneer Application

The first step to take before applying your veneer is to cut it to the approximate size of your work surface. Cut it to a slightly larger dimension than your actual surface area to allow a slight margin of error when you are placing the veneer permanently. You can then fit the veneer to the surface prior to removing the release paper from the back and exposing the glue. When you are satisfied with your fit you can now remove the release paper from the back of the veneer. Using a center line method (aligning a center mark on the veneer and substrate) place the veneer to make contact in the center first then begin smoothing by hand from the center out toward the edge. On larger surfaces you may want to lay down some separator strips or dowels to prevent the veneer from making contact until you are properly positioned. Again, start in the center and begin removing the strips from the center out applying pressure as you work outward. Now that the veneer is firmly affixed apply pressure with a veneer scraper tool from the center outward in the same direction as the grain. Go over the entire surface twice to ensure a good bond. Inspect for any loose or bubbled areas by looking across the surface in good lighting. If there appears to be any bubbles or loose spots then go back over them with the scraping tool again. In some instances a warm iron set on a medium setting will also help set these loose spots. After applying heat to the area for a few seconds go over them with your scraper.

Trimming the Veneer

Now you are ready to trim your veneer to its finished dimension. Using a sharp utility knife or razor knife, cut the veneer back to the edge of the finished workpiece. It’s best to score these cuts a few times before cutting completely through the veneer to avoid wood fiber tear out or chipped edges. After you’re done trimming take a fine sandpaper and lightly sand or feather the edges and corners to prevent a snagging hazard. Veneer panels can also be trimmed with a powered laminate trimmer. If you are going to use this type of tool wait 24 hours before trimming to allow the glue bond to strengthen.

Finishing

It is recommended that you wait 24 hours before finishing your veneer. It is necessary to properly sand the veneer to achieve the best results. A typical sanding progression starting with 120 grit paper, then 150 grit and ending with 180 grit is usually adequate. The preferred stains and finishes for veneer products are oil and solvent based. Water base stains and finishes can be used but should be done on a test piece first to gauge reactions with the veneer. It’s important to remember that moisture causes wood to expand. If there are any flaws or weaknesses in your glue line this expansion could cause delamination or bubbled veneer. No matter what type of stain or finish you use it should be used sparingly and not allowed to sit on the surface too long. It’s always preferable to use multiple light coats of stain or finish instead of heavy wet coats. Never saturate a veneered surface with stain or finish or allow it to sit or pool on the surface. Always wipe excess immediately.

Click here to download PDF version

Applying wood veneer with contact cement is an acceptable method when other methods aren’t available or practical. By following these established practices and recommendations you will have good success using contact cement with paperbacked, wood backed and phenolic resin backed wood veneer. Do not use contact cement to adhere raw or unbacked wood veneers.

Preparation

When you receive your veneer you must allow time for it to acclimate to your environment prior to use. To accomplish this it’s necessary to remove the veneer from the packaging and lay it flat for a minimum of 48 hours up to 4 days. It may be necessary to apply some weight on the ends of the sheet to help retain flatness during this period. It’s best to plan ahead if possible and avoid veneering when conditions of high humidity or extreme dry conditions are expected.

Adhesives for Wood Veneer

Solvent based contact adhesives work best for wood veneering with our products. When it is necessary to use water based adhesives you may want to consider using a phenolic resin backed wood veneer. Before using any adhesive be sure it is at room temperature and properly mixed as the solids which create the bond strength tend to settle much like pigment in paint. Brush or roller grade adhesives are best to achieve 100% coverage on all surface areas. Spray grade adhesives can be used but you must be sure you get 100% surface coverage. It’s necessary to coat both surfaces that are to be bonded. It’s not always necessary but on some smooth glossy surfaces it will help bond strength if you scuff sand the surface with 120 grit sandpaper prior to glue application. If the substrate is “open” or “porous” it will require a second application of glue as the first coat will partially absorb into the surface. This is most likely to occur when using plywood as your substrate. All contact cements require time for the solvents to “flash off” before the two surfaces can be mated together. This period, referred to as “open time” will be specified by the manufacturer and should be adhered to. Extreme conditions such as high heat, high humidity, low temperatures etc., can effect the open time so some discretion must be used under these conditions. It is important to understand and follow the adhesive manufacturer’s recommendations on application of their product.

Tools and Supplies for Wood Veneering

There are a few basic supplies and tools to have ready before you veneer. You will need a good quality contact cement, small roller or brush for glue application, a veneer scraper or smoothing tool and separator strips. The separator strips can be pieces of hardwood, MDF or hardboard or some people use wooden dowels. They should be long enough to span the width of the piece you are veneering. We don’t advocate the use of any type of J-roller for veneer application. You will not generate enough pressure with any type of J-roller.

Wood Veneer Application

Now you’re ready to begin the actual wood veneering process. Make sure the back of the wood veneer sheet and your substrate surface are clean, smooth and free of any dust or debris. Apply your adhesive and follow all manufacturers directions regarding coverage and open times. When the solvents in the adhesive have properly “flashed off” and the adhesive is just tacky, not wet, lay down your separator strips 1”-2” apart. Position your wood veneer over your substrate where you want it. This may require someone to assist you if you are doing a large surface. Starting in the center, remove one separator strip and push the veneer down to make contact with the substrate. Now continue this same process with each separator working all the way to the left or right of the sheet, smoothing as you go. Once you have one half of the sheet secured then start back at the middle again and work out to the opposite edge of the sheet. Now that your wood veneer is attached it will not move. Take the wood veneer scraper and apply as much pressure as possible while smoothing down every square inch of the veneer in the same direction as the grain. You may want to go through this smoothing process twice to ensure maximum bond and also hit any small spots that may have been missed. Remember, the use of a veneer scraper or smoothing tool is absolutely necessary. J-rollers are not recommended for installation of wood veneer.

Inspect your work

You will want to inspect your veneer now prior to applying any finishes. At this point you still have time to correct any problems that might be present. Shine a light across the surface horizontally. By looking at it this way you will reveal any imperfections such as bubbles or areas that might require additional attention during sanding and surface preparation. If there are any bubbles they can normally be fixed at this point. If you can push down on the bubble and hear a click but it pops up again it may indicate trapped air or solvents. If you push it down and it stays down it may just indicate a weak bond that didn’t get enough pressure. If this is the case take a warm iron set between cotton and wool and go over this area with downward pressure. In the more extreme case where there seems to be air trapped in the bubble you may have to make a small cut in the grain with a razor blade or exacto knife to relieve the pressure. You can then iron over the spot just as you would in the other scenario. This is the best chance you have to permanently fix or repair any problems that are present.

If there are any flaws or weaknesses in your glue line this expansion could cause delamination or bubbled wood veneer.

Tools and Supplies

Working with iron on edge banding isn’t hard and doesn’t require any specialized tools or skills. Most of the tools you will need can be found in almost any home. You will want a standard household iron, an edge trimmer or standard utility knife or razor knife. We suggest you dedicate an iron for this purpose only as you may get some glue “squeeze out” when applying the edgeband. A small travel size iron offers better control than a standard iron.

Getting Started

Whether the edges to be covered are MDF, plywood or particle board, be sure that any deep saw marks are smoothed and any voids filled. Your iron should be set on a medium heat setting. A high setting is not necessary because the hot melt adhesive on the edge banding has a low melting point. The possibility of scorching the surface of the edge banding is also significantly reduced at this lower setting. Cut your edge banding about ½” longer than the edge to be banded. Also note that rolled edge banding has finger joints, or splice joints, typically every 4’-6’. A little pre-planning will help you to work around these joints if they are too noticeable or happen to be in a high visibility area. Starting at one end, position the edgeband with one hand and apply heat and downward pressure with the iron. We recommend doing 4” to 6” first and allow it to cool which will take approximately a minute. Now that the adhesive has cooled you have effectively “anchored” the strip which will make it easier to apply the remainder of the strip. Now you can move the iron steadily along the length of the edge while applying downward pressure with the iron. Normally you will exert enough pressure with the iron but you should check to make sure all the surface area is firmly sealed down. If you discover loose spots or edges that may want to curl up then you can re-heat the area and immediately apply pressure with a wood block, veneer scraper or flat edge tool to ensure a proper bond. Always apply the edgeband on the most visible surfaces last. By applying the most visible surfaces last you will ensure that any adjoining edges that butt up to this edge will be covered or over-lapped and therefore will be less visible.

Trimming the Edge Banding

Edge banding can be trimmed with a sharp utility or razor knife, a sharp wood chisel or a commercially available flush trimming tool. Good results can be achieved with any of these methods. To trim the excess length from a strip of wood edge banding simply cut with a utility knife or razor knife back to the panel end. Cutting across the wood grain like this is best accomplished using 2 or 3 scoring cuts instead of cutting through with one heavy stroke. This will help avoid any grain tear out, especially with coarse grained woods like red oak, hickory, white ash and some others. For trimming the excess from the edges use a sharp knife edge or sharp chisel held at a slight angle, not perpendicular, to avoid gouging or scarring the adjoining surface. For best control use short strokes with your knife or chisel blade. Don’t be concerned if you leave a little excess as this will be taken care of in the final step. If you are using a flush trimming tool press the edge of the tool firmly against the face of your panel and slide it along the edge to trim the excess edge banding. Working with the grain direction instead of against the grain will produce a cleaner cut with minimal grain tear out.

Finishing Up

To give your project that finishing touch use a sanding block with 120 grit abrasive. Sand any excess edge banding with this block skewed at an angle to produce a slight beveled edge. Run your fingers along this edge to check for any sharp edges or loose grain that could snag and tear out. Allow 24 hours before staining or finishing.

20 Mil Paperback
A reference to the paper backing applied to sheets of flexible veneer. A single mil thickness is .001” so in this example the backing paper is a nominal .020” thick.

Acclimate
The process of allowing veneer to adapt to changes in environment, temperature and relative humidity over a specified period of time.

Aliphatic Resin
Aliphatic resin glue is commonly referred to as “yellow glue” or “wood glue”. This is one type of glue that can be used to bond veneer to certain substrate materials.

Annual Ring
A growth layer put on by a tree in a single year that includes both springwood and summerwood.

Bark Pocket
A small natural defect in wood where bark is surrounded by normal wood growth.

Birdseye
A type of “figure” found commonly in Maple and occasionally in other species of wood. It consists of many small circular or elliptical shapes caused by distortion of the wood fiber and is usually slightly darker. These distortions generally resemble the appearance of a bird’s eye.

Block Mottle
An irregular variegation in the cellular structure of the wood which appears as blotchy patches across the grain of the wood. This type of anomaly is commonly found in Makore and Anigre and is highly desireable.

Book Match
The most commonly used method of matching veneers where every other leaf of veneer is turned over or opened like the pages of a book. In making veneer faces many of these pairs will be joined together to create the face.

Burl
A burl is an abnormal or deformed growth on a tree caused by some type of environmental or induced form of stress to the tree. Burls produce swirling grain patterns around clusters of eyes or elliptical forms and are highly sought after for their beauty and unique character.

Cathedral Grain
A specific grain pattern characterized by a series of stacked “V” and inverted “V” shapes. This pattern is common to Flat cut or Plain sliced veneer.

Center Match
A veneer face with a joint down the midpoint or center line and equal number of flitch leaves on each side of the center line producing a perfectly centered and balance matched face.

Checks
Small cracks running parallel to the grain of the wood normally caused by stress in the grain during the drying or seasoning process.

Comb Grain
An exceptional quality rift cut grain with a very straight grain and closely spaced growth increments.

Crossbar
A grain irregularity resembling a dip in the grain running at right angles to the length of the veneer.

Cross Grain
A veneer sheet or face in which the grain of the wood runs in the 4’ direction as opposed to the standard 4’x8’. This is referred to as 8’x4’.

Crotch Figure
Cut from the portion of the tree where the main trunk branches out into two or more limbs. This cut produces highly figured wood grain patterns that are dense through the middle and produce a distinctive plume-like or feathery pattern that is highly sought after. This is common in mahogany and less common in walnut and cherry.

Defect, Open
Any one of naturally occurring flaws such as checks, splits, knotholes, loose knots or worm holes that interrupt the smooth texture or appearance of the wood surface.

Delamination
A separation of the face veneer from the backing material whether it be paper, wood crossband or phenolic backer. It can also be a separation of a veneer component or sheet veneer from the substrate it’s applied to.

Edgebanding, Wood Edgebanding
Thin strips of wood veneer designed to cover the exposed edges of any panel substrate.

Face
Leaves or components of veneer that have been spliced together but have not been applied to any backer material or substrate panel.

Fiddleback Figure
Narrow bands of crossfire figure that run uninterrupted from edge to edge across the veneer leaf. When book matched and splice together it forms a slight or pronounced chevron grain pattern.

Figure
The patterns produced in wood grain by deviations in the growth ring caused by knots, rays, or interlocked and wavy grains. These patterns might include Block Mottle, Curly, Fiddleback or Blistered figure to name a few.

Flake Figure
Flake figure is predominantly noticed in species which have heavy medullary ray growth such as Oak, Lacewood or American Sycamore. The saw or knife cut is nearly parallel to the medullary ray as it cuts through and produces this “flakey” appearance in the grain.

Fleck Figure
The same as flake figure. See “Flake figure”.

Flat Cut
Slicing method where the veneer is sliced parallel to the center of a log and tangent across the growth rings. This method of slicing will produce a “cathedral grain” and is also referred to as “Plain sliced”.

Flexible Veneer
A wood veneer face that is laminated to paper, wood crossband, phenolic or other backing material and processed to make standard dimensional sheets of real wood laminate.

Flitch
A section of a log made ready to slice into veneer. After slicing the individual leaves are bundled together in the sequence in which they came off the slicer.

Grading
A standard by which veneers are “classed” specific to quality and species. Grading generally defines the value and possible uses for veneer and hardwoods.

Grain
The direction, size, arrangement and appearance of the wood fibers in veneer.

Gum Spots
Gum or resinous material or color spots caused by accumulation of resins in veneer. Most commonly found in Cherry veneer.

Half Round Slicing
Similar to rotary peeling, also producing a high veneer yield. Used primarily to add width to narrow stocks by increasing the plane of cut. Also used to enhance a particularly wild grain pattern. Matching is possible because the leaves can be kept in sequence. Half round cutting may be used to achieve "flat cut" veneer appearance.

Hardwood
General term used to describe veneer or lumber produced from broadleaf or deciduous trees.

Heartwood
The non-active center of a tree generally distinguishable from the outer portion (sapwood) by its darker color.

Joint
The line created where the edges of two leaves of veneer are joined together on a veneer face or flexible veneer sheet.

Joint, Open
A joint where two leaves of veneer do not fit together tightly.

Knot
A cross section of a tree limb where the grain is running at a right angle to that of the piece of wood in which it is attached.

Knot, Open
A void produced in a knot when a piece of the wood grain has fallen out.

Knot, Pin
Sound knots that are less than ¼” in diameter.

Knot, Sound
Knots that are solid across their face and are firmly fixed in place by the surrounding wood.

Leaf
A veneer leaf is a single strip or piece of veneer from a sliced bundle.

Plain Sliced
See “Flat Cut”

Poly Vinyl Acetate (PVA)
Common glue used in woodworking and veneering. It’s more commonly referred to as “white glue”.

Polyback
A flexible and strong kraft liner paper impregnated with a polymer resin. Usually used as a veneer face backer or as a balance sheet on the back sides of veneered panels.

Pommele Figure
Pommele is Italian for blister which is a desirable figure found in veneer which is a dense pattern of irregular shaped rings enveloping one another. It is similar to the cluster figure found in Burl Veneer. Pommele is Italian for blister.

Pressure Sensitive Adhesive (PSA)
An adhesive film applied to the back of flexible veneer sheets. This is sometimes referred to as “Peel and Stick” veneer.

Quarter Cut
A veneer slicing method where the knife slices through the annual growth rings at approximately a right angle producing a series of parallel stripes. In Red and White Oak this will produce a characteristic Flake pattern.

Random Match/Planked
A flexible veneer or veneer face created with veneer components of different size, color and grain character of the same species of wood to create a random or rustic look.

Ray, Medullary
See “Flake figure”

Ribbon Stripe
The stripe effect you get when some woods are quarter cut to expose a straight wide ribbon grain with high shimmer or “chatoyance”, a desirable light reflective characteristic. This is mostly seen in Mahogany, Sapele, Afrormosia and some other woods.

Rift Cut
A veneer slicing method where the knife slices through the annual rings just a few degrees off an exact right angle to produce a grain similar to quarter cut without the apparent flake. This cut is most common in Red and White Oak to reduce the ray “fleck”.

Rotary Cut
Veneer that is produced by centering a whole log on a cutting lathe and turning it against a broad stationary blade set at a slight angle. This “peels” the veneer off the log in a continuous sheet and produces a wild, wavy grain pattern.

Sapwood
The outer layers of living wood between the bark layer and the heartwood in a tree which carries and stores nutrients for tree growth. Sapwood is lighter in color and is typically cut away to make veneer.

Sequence Matching
Sequence match refers to a group of veneer sheets that are produced in order from the same log.

Slip Match
Slip match is when veneer leaves are “slipped” or laid side by side without turning every other one over like you would in a book match and then edge glued to create a veneer face.

Spliced Veneer
Veneer leaves that are joined together in specific matching patterns through a production process known as splicing to create veneer faces and ultimately flexible veneer.

Substrate
Any material used as a core or surface to which veneer is applied. The most common substrates for veneering are MDF, particle board and cabinet grade plywood.

WiseWood Veneer can provide you with custom architectural panels beyond the ordinary. We understand that to achieve a positive outcome with any project you have to begin with quality materials. With that in mind our custom panels start with the highest quality veneers and core materials. We offer sequenced and numbered, end matched, cut to size and even blue print matched panels to your specification. These custom veneers can be laid up on a variety of substrates including MDF, particle board and veneer core to name a few. We’ll work hard to understand your expectations. As part of our process we can supply general veneer species samples, digital pictures or even actual flitch samples for your approval. Typical lead time on standard panel orders will be about 5-7 days from final approval to shipping. Some variables such as special matching or large volume orders may require extended lead times. In such cases we will communicate those changes and commit to delivering on time. Our highest priority is gaining your trust and confidence.

When a regular veneer or standard size veneer just doesn’t fit a specific need we offer custom solutions. We have the capabilities to custom make veneer to your spec. If that means an architectural or higher figured veneer, sequence matching, end matching, stack matching, slip matching or cut to size veneer, we can accommodate your request. You will also have options on backing material such as paperback, polyback or phenolic resin, wood on wood or even 3M pressure sensitive adhesive. Much the same as we do with custom panels, WiseWood can supply general veneer species samples, digital pictures or even actual flitch samples for your approval. Typical lead time of approximately 5-7 days from order date to shipping will apply to all custom orders. Some minimums may apply. Let us help you eliminate waste, maximize profits, improve the quality of the end product and create satisfied and loyal clients now and in the future.

Custom Stocking Program (CSP)

Looking for that competitive edge? Want to work smarter not harder? Do you need more time to do the important things that help make your company profitable? We can help. At WiseWood Veneer we are constantly thinking of ways to help our partners do what they’re best at. Another example of this is our Custom Stocking Program (CSP). This service is designed for any business, large or small, and offers benefits literally anyone can take advantage of. The program is ideally suited for any company that is using a specific amount of veneer, edge banding or profile wrapping veneer on a regular or semi-regular basis. The essence of the program is very simple. You tell us what you need, we will have your items in stock and ship quantities determined by you as you need them. This helps us define our inventory to meet your needs. You will have the advantage of getting the best pricing while reducing your cost for storing, managing and maintaining valuable inventory at your location.

The program was designed with stock items in mind but it is not limited to those items only. We can tailor your program to include custom items from the wide assortment of veneers, edge banding and profile wrapping materials available to us. These products are handled the same way as stock items but may be subject to slightly different conditions when establishing the program.

You owe it to yourself to explore all of the possibilities and benefits a custom stocking program from WiseWood Veneer has to offer.

Put our inventory to work for you, it’s the Wise thing to do!

With WiseWood Veneer’s Customized Stocking Program, you can:

•	Have veneer according to your species, size, grade, color, backer requirements available and ready to ship, so virtually no lead times
•	Streamline your purchasing process
•	Designed for both large and small customers
•	Enjoy fixed costs for veneer that you've enrolled in our Stocking Program - you receive maximum volume discount pricing
•	Reduce your inventory costs
•	Improve your cash flow
•	Free up space in your warehouse
•	Have one direct contact person available to you that would oversee all aspects of your order from start to finish

How does it work? Simple.

1.	Based on average usage, you place a Blanket Purchase Order (BPO) locking in pricing for a specified time period. Veneer is shipped in quantities and dates as specified on BPO or as requested by the customer as needed.
2.	You pay only as the veneer is released.
3.	You save the costs associated with carrying and managing the inventory.
4.	You have the advantage of knowing that your veneer will be ready and waiting when you need to have it shipped eliminating stressful and costly delivery delays.

paperbacked wood veneer

FlexVen™ paperback veneer is the essential choice for any project requiring wood veneer. Stable yet flexible, FlexVen™ is able to bend and conform to tight radii as well as flat surfaces. The FlexVen™ 10 mil backer is very flexible and is a great choice for pressing on contoured or flat surfaces. If you don’t have a press, the extra stability and thickness of FlexVen™ 20 mil backer is ideally suited for use with contact cement.

- Economical and beautiful
- Many domestic and exotic species available
- Pre-sanded and ready to use wood veneer
- Cuts easily with utility knife, razor knife or scissors
- Available in 4’x8’ and 4’x10’ sheets
Tuf-Pli™
polyback wood veneer

When you need added strength and durability but want to maintain flexibility Tuf-Pli™ wood veneer is your choice. Tuf-Pli™ is natural wood veneer bonded to a polymer resin backer giving it extra stability and durability while maintaining its flexibility. This is an excellent alternative to traditional laminate backed veneer which is stiff and more susceptible to breaking or splitting.

- Rivals the durability of laminate back veneer while providing superior flexibility
- Dimensionally more stable and resistant to movement
- Reduces the chances of bubbling and substrate telegraphing
- Resistant to tearing or damage
- Pre-sanded and ready to use
- Available in most domestic species in 4’x8’ and 4’x10’ sheets

eco friendly wood veneer

WiseWood Veneer is pleased to offer our reconstituted veneer as an environmentally friendly alternative to some of the more rare and expensive exotic wood species. It’s also a great option for those projects where veneer color and consistency is critical from start to finish. Made with fast growing renewable natural wood sources, reconstituted veneer is produced by laminating different colors of dyed veneer in alternating layers. This process produces natural looking wood grains and colors thought only to exist in nature… until now.

- Environmentally friendly and responsibly produced
- Free from natural defects and anomalies
- Color and grain consistent from sheet to sheet
- Real wood, not plastic laminate
- More affordable than many expensive exotic species
- Available in a variety of backers

pre-glued flexible wood veneer

Wood veneering couldn’t be any easier than using WiseWood PSA flexible wood veneer. For professionals and non-professionals alike, you won’t find an easier more trouble free solution to almost any wood veneering project. PSA veneer is ideal for cabinet re-facing, re-doing speaker cabinets and general veneering on a variety of surfaces.

- Available in most domestic wood species in 2’x8’ and 4’x8’ sheets
- Can be added as an option on most other species in 4’x8’ and 4’x10’
