New eCommerce Features

Wix is coming along really nicely with its ecommerce features. They've upgrade their ecart functionalities substantially. Its now super easy to sell anything only in just minutes. Clients have been loving it.

Ranch Website

Wix gets Mobile

I just tested Wix M. (Mobile) - it works great. Basically in the past when someone using and iphone would get that nasty error message. (although it was fine for Android) - now it will automatically default to a mobile app custom made to your requirements. check http://m.wix.com/gobirdie/wixlab#home_page
This is probably not in Flash enabled platform Wix is using, since the iPhone doesn't read flash, so its a probably using basic html or better yet html5. This is just awesome.

A basketball management attorney in New York asked me for a new website for his firm. I didn't want to create something boring since basketball is one of my all time favorite sports. So I added some extra flavor to it. It was to my true amazement that I was able to import a ActionScript file into Wix! This opened a whole new relm of possibilities. If I could import .fla file then I could add some great animation to the work I was doing. Check the site's About page, lower left. He wouldn't let me use it on the homepage because it still takes too long to load. I had to agree.

Professional Websites

One of the first project I did using Wix was for a client called Brandi in Los Angeles. She's a TV Host, Speaker, and Philanthropist who wanted a simple looking website that she could manage herself from time to time. I normally start my design work on Photoshop then transfer psd files to html (or png in this Wix case). I had done a few attempts using Wordpress layouts but somehow it just didn't cut it. So I showed Brandi the site I made using Wix and she preferred it to the Wordpress site. Since using Wix is far more easier, I was kinda of glad.

Filmmaker website

A filmmaker in Thailand asked that I build a website for her upcoming new film. The Wife Master. The title alone made it interesting enough to take the challenge. She gave me tons of great pics and a music theme that till this day I can't get out of my head. I wanted to stretch Wix as much as possible on this one. Since in the past I had issues loading files like .fla, I decides to take a youtube image, stretch it, and play it in the background. The out come with some superimposed images make this site very unique and in tune with the spirit of her indie film.

HTML arrives

The rumor are over and its official, Wix will now allow us to embed html into our websites. Not sure if you realize what an huge opportunity this is for all of us. Using iFrame we're able to integrate a world of cool apps, gadgets, and widgets. Html is the foundation to all operating languages and having Wix bridge its platform to all the html opportunities out there, tells me a lot about where this company is taking us and the people's vision behind it. To start I'm adding Facebook connect everywhere. Then Google calender and maps. After that I'll stop over at jotforms.com and finally integrate the various registration pages clients have asked me to build. (I've been hating to take them to a new browser window to fill out a form or something), I'ma gonna be busy.

A US Army soldier in Iraq contacted me to build him a website for his online sport clothing. Very cool name, and tons of products. I mean tons. He wanted something that was funky, colorful and that had a lot of products showcased. Using some new photoshop tools I just got, and formating a layout I thought was easy to navigate, I was able to create a style with some web appeal.

Keeping it Simple

A client from Arizona wanted me to redesign her website. She sells natural health items online. In the beginning she had something very loud and full of !!! and things like POW and WOW...you know what I mean. I suggested letting her items do the talking since they really didn't need heavy marketing to sell themselves. She didn't think people online would grab her products if it didn't litterally scream at your face. lol. After a few weeks we came to middle ground, and launched her site. A week later she was Site Of The Week on Wix.

Pawsitive vibes

A project I just finished was for a pet trainer. She wanted a site that captured the fun she has in her business and that would highlight some of her more charming "pupils". I used very natural imagery and pulled as many pictures as I could in a grid format.

I was given $100 worth of Google Adwords today. (guess you get that when you sign up for any ecommerce account on Wix) I match it with another $100. Got a couple prospects already so hey I'm happy.

.: I first began building websites in 1997 when I started a Indie Film Festival in Los Angeles. Lack of funding (or lack there of) forced me to grow the organization from the Web-out. That means my entire infrastructure was entirely web based. My backend office admin, film submissions, film previews, jury voting, filmmaker initiatives...everything was done online. However coding html/php back then was time consuming. Specially since the event was year round and had a lot of side activities. I really needed something more hands on.

So I started using various Adobe Macromedia tools. Later when CS (Creative Suite) came around, I was ecstatic since it allowed me to easily work on various web and graphic design projects right on my old bubble-gum-colored imac.(remember those?). Web design was getting slightly easier, perhaps a bit faster too. It actually allowed me some extra time to design websites for people outside of the Festival's program. In the end, growing the festival from the web, was actually giving way to my design company.

But it wasn't until I first read about Wix on Crunchbase in 2009 that I really ramped up my web design business. Basically it's a Web-Top publishing platform created in 1998 that allows users to create any kind of web content such as web sites, widgets, blogs, myspace/ facebook layouts without any programming experience. Its a very simple and clean flash-based web design platform that anyone from a novice to a seasoned designer can use. For me it allows me great freedom in design. So much so that I can now travel to other countries because of it. (more in my next post)
