Real Radio 860 WLBG Sports Report: 5-31-12

Local:

Continuing our recognition of spring sports award winners at CHS:

In girls track, the sportsmanship Award went to Sha’kura Cook, Most Improved to K’Teya Harp & MVP to Teka Simpson

In boys track, Sportsmanship went to Tim Williams, Most Improved to Chris Patterson & MVP to Kenyon Brown.

Now for those of you who could not make it to the Laurens County Speedway last Saturday night let’s review the winners.

Super Late Model: Billy Rushton picked up his 4th win of the season.. Mike Measamer took 2nd & Terry Bullard 3rd.

Limited: Ray Story crossed the finish line to pick up his 1st win of the season.. The next 2 to cross the finish line were David Todd & David Stone.

Hobby: Mart Patterson also picked up his 1st win of the season in the main event… Rounding out the top 3 were Phillip Wilson and Chris Patterson.

Front Wheel Drive: The main event in this division also resulted with a driver picking up his 1st win of the season in the person of Chris Harvell.. Bill Baker & Shane Roberts finished 2nd & 3rd respectively.

Super Stock 4: Cory Winn took the checkered flag in a race that had no cautions.. David Baker & Scott Nelson were the next 2 across the finish line.

Braves: The Braves made it 2 wins in a row over the defending World Champion St Louis Cardinals last night as they took a 10-7 win at the Ted… The Braves had 14 hits with Brian McCann and Freddie Freeman both hitting homeruns… Freeman was back in the line-up after being out several games with “eye problems”. He was wearing new glasses last night and they sure seemed to help as he went 3 for 5 from the plate with the homerun, scoring twice and had 3 RBI’s.. Maybe Brave’s manager Fredi Gonzales needs to send all the Braves to the same eye doctor.. The Braves have today off and will start a week-long road trip as they first visit Washington to take on the division leading Nationals on Friday night.

Greenville Drive: After suffering a 12-2 loss to the Savannah Sand Gnats on Tuesday night, the Greenville Drive bounced back to take a 6-3 win over the Gnats at Flour Field last night… The Drive will end the current home stand with a 4 game series with the Charleston RiverDogs that starts tonight at 7:05pm

College Baseball: South Carolina freshman catcher Grayson Greiner sustained a lateral meniscus tear to his left knee during practice on Wednesday afternoon at Carolina Stadium. Greiner will undergo arthroscopic surgery today. That means he will miss the 2012 Columbia Regional… and by the way in case you have not heard, the Clemson – Coastal Carolina game has a first pitch scheduled for noon and the South Carolina – Manhattan game is scheduled to start at 4:00pm.. The games can be seen on ESPNU and ESPN3.. If you don’t have access to a TV, you can catch all the action on Sports Radio 1410 WPCC.

This & That:

The CHS Athletic Booster Club is having their 2nd Annual Golf Tournament at Stoney Point this Saturday.. My understanding is that the field is full but sponsorship opportunities may still exist.. If you are interested in helping them in their major spring fundraising event, call 833-4949.

10. Prank phone calls. “Do you have Prince Albert in a Can? Well, let him out.” Or, “Is your refrigerator running? Well catch it.”

9. Throwing water balloons off bridges. Everyone needs a free car wash and a stress test.

8. The potato trick. Place the appropriate size potato in a tail pipe and watch the people try to drive off the next day.

7. The soap suds in the fountain trick. This one doesn’t work well in Laurens. You never know which, or if, a fountain will be working.

6. Apple shooting. Learn to shoot an apple off someone else’s head. The victims, I mean volunteer’s get to attend camp free.

5. How to make a multi tower array for radio stations. This could be taught by Emil Finley and could also be called “nap time”.

4. How to do radio and place your big toe and sometimes your entire foot over the line. I wrote the teachers manual for this one. Just ask Emil, I think he took my Special Hockey Investigation Team top ten off the web site.

3. Clown tolerance class. Taught by Wyatt Madison, this class will also qualify you for your concealed weapons permit.

2. Water melon snitching. This class is usually taught at night. A snitched watermelon taste twice as good as one you buy. Just watch out for the salt loaded shotguns. The salt stings for a while.

1. How to offend the largest number of people at any one time. Taught by Randy Stevens. Heck, it’s natural, he does it every day.

Video of the crimes show two men entering the Church Street Lil’ Cricket on May 21st,
one-armed with a handgun. Then early this past Saturday morning, May 26th,
a single man enters the Lil’ Cricket on North Harper armed with a rifle, which
he holds on the store clerk. Police Chief Robin Morse said the men in both
cases had similar clothing, wearing dark pants and dark hoodies.

Morse said that while the robbers left the stores on foot in both cases, a witness
observed the robber getting into a blue SUV in the robbery this past weekend:

“We don’t know, on the 21st, whether they had a car parked somewhere down the road and ran back to that car or not, we don’t know about
that part, but we do know they left the store on foot, as well as on the 26th.
But on the 26th, we did have a witness that lived right behind there
that did see the people leave in an SVU – it was a blue SUV.”

Chief Robin Morse said Laurens County Crimestoppers can provide a cash reward for
information on either armed robbery, provided anonymously:

“I have spoken with them and they’re telling me that, according to the
scale they have, they could offer up to a $350 reward for any information that
leads to an arrest and conviction of these people.”

Video of the May 21st Church Street Lil’ Cricket shows a woman drive up in
a jeep brand vehicle just before the two suspects flee the store. We asked
Chief Morse if police have been able to talk with her?

“No we haven’t. We can see it on the video where this lady pulls up,
they run out of the store right in front of her, she see’s ‘em, and then she
sees which way they go. She points to the clerk which way they ran, and she
backs out and goes in that direction. So, whoever this lady is, if she’s
listening, we would appreciate it if she gets in touch with us and tells us
what she saw.”

This specific woman, or anyone else with information on the May 21st or
26th armed robberies can call Laurens Police at 984-35-32….or you
can remain anonymous and possibly win a cash reward by calling Laurens County
Crimestoppers at 68-Crime.

Local:

Continuing today with our spring sports award winners from CHS:

In soccer, Sportsmanship went to Susannah Bryant, Record Breaker because of 81 goals to Anthony Henley and MVP to Dexter Simmons

Golf: Sportsmanship went to Nate Moody and MVP to Hunter Nichols

Boys Tennis: Sportsmanship went to Van Nibert, the Kevin Adams Award went to David Barton and the MVP to Austin MacMillan.

At LDHS the boys soccer team had their awards and Esgar Diaz and Hernan Salinas were recognized for making the All-Region 1-AAAA Team

Braves: The Braves broke their 8 game losing streak last night as they took a 5-4 over the St Louis Cardinals down in Atlanta last night.. Michael Bourn led things off for the Braves with a solo homer to start the bottom of the 1st inning.. However the big blow came in the 3rd inning when Dan Uggla had a 3-run homer… Randal Delgado picked up the win pitching 5⅓ innings and Craig Kimbrel the save… The Braves end their current home stand tonight as they try to take the rubber game of the 3 game series with the Cardinals.

Greenville Drive: The Greenville Drive had their 4 game winning streak broken last night as the Savannah Sand Gnats pounded them taking a 12-2 win at Flour Field.. The Drive pitchers gave up 19 hits including 3 homeruns… The Drive had 13 hits but could just not get the hits at the proper time… The Drive and Gnats finish their current series at Flour Field tonight.

College Baseball:

The South Carolina Gamecocks are the #8 seed nationally and should they win their region, will host a super regional.. The other teams who drew a national seeding are in order starting with #1: Florida, UCLA, Florida State, Baylor, Oregon and North Carolina..

The SEC led all conferences placing 8 teams in the 64 team field: Arkansas, Florida, Kentucky, LSU, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, South Carolina, and Vanderbilt… The ACC was 2nd with 7 teams: Clemson, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Miami (Fla.), North Carolina, North Carolina State and Virginia… Must play some pretty good baseball down south.

NASCAR: Just a reminder that they will be up at the Dover Speedway this weekend.. Also a quick look at the Sprint Cup Standings shows that Greg Biffle is on top with 453 points.. Matt Kenseth is in 2nd 10 points behind Biffle.. The next 3 are Denny Hamlin (-16), Dale Earnhart Jr. (-18) & Jimmie Johnson (-48).

This & That:

And if there are any NHL fan out there, you probably already know that the Stanley Cup Finals start tonight as the Los Angeles Kings and New Jersey Devils get together for game 1 on the Devils home ice..

Also in a broadcast note, the Little League Championship game that we had planned t broadcast tonight has been moved to Friday at 6:00pm.. at this time, we still plan on broadcasting it.

9.” Debbie Does the Chinese Restaurant.” It only took about ten minutes.

8. “The Ghost in the Invisible Bikini.” A very revealing movie from 1966 and it’s unrated.

7. “Freddy Got Fingered” This 2001 movie is …..Well just let your imagination figure this one out. Some of the stars say “Hey There”.

6. “Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter.” This new release…well let’s just say it sucks and if my wife found this one, I would deserve anything I got.

5. “Snow White the Sequel” All the dwarfs get new names like shorty, humpy, and quickie.

4. “Pee Wee Herman Goes to the Movies.” It was a very arresting experience.

3. “Silence of the Goats”. Filmed entirely on location in Mountville around a multi tower array. A famous radio personality stars in this one.

2. “Kawasaki Thong Riders, a Love Story”. Starring Randy Stevens. It just cannot get any more X rated or uglier than that.

1. “The Burning Bed and the Loretta Bobbit.” This film will be filmed entirely in Laurens County, just as soon as her husband gets out of jail. The opening scene shows a man alledgedly holding a DVD to her throat.

Long-time Clinton Police Officer Jerry Campbell confirmed for WLBG News yesterday that he
intends to be a candidate for Sheriff of Laurens County as a petition candidate
in the General Election this November. Campbell was one of two candidates for
the Democratic Party nomination to the Office of Sheriff, but both were taken
off the ballot after the State Supreme Court ruled on election law.

The other Democratic Party candidate for sheriff, Eric Robinson, was also removed
from the ballot, so that there will be no Democratic Party candidate for
Sheriff of Laurens County this fall. Robinson had not returned a call from WLBG
News as of last night as to whether he intends to be a petition candidate for
Sheriff.

As of last report, incumbent Sheriff Ricky Chastain remains on the ballot in the
Republican Primary June 12th, along with challengers Don Reynolds
and David Brewer. Another Supreme Court ruling is expected early next week that
could further alter the landscape for the upcoming June primaries.

officers and he complied with the victim’s story. The victim stated she was
scared of the subject because she did not know what he was capable of when he
was that upset. The victim did not want
I have already brought you some of these like softball last Thursday… I do have a couple more I will be mentioning this week.. In boys tennis, Lance Aiken & James Tinsley received Academic Awards while Colin John received the Most Improved Award.. Also as a reminder, Kento Hasanuma made the All Region Team

Braves: The Atlanta Braves’ losing streak reached 8 games as the St Louis Cardinals took an 8-2 win in Atlanta yesterday afternoon. The Braves are still 2 games above .500.. The Braves have had key injuries over the stretch as Freddie Freeman is out with vision problems; Chipper Jones is on the 15 day Disabled List due to a leg injury and Brian McCann is just returning from an illness… The Braves and Cardinals face off again tonight in Atlanta.

Greenville Drive: The Grenville drive returned to Flour Field yesterday afternoon and started a series with the Savannah Sand Gnats in a successful way as they took a 6-2 victory.. The Drive pounded out 13 hits while 3 Drive pitchers held the Gnats to just 7 hits… Same 2 teams will face off again tonight at Flour Field.

If you remember I told you yesterday that the Univ. of S.C. had been chosen as one of the host sites for the 2012 NCAA Baseball Regionals.. Well I can now tell you who the 3 other teams are that they will host… One is Manhattan which will be seeded 4th and the other 2 are in-state teams: Coastal Carolina & the Clemson Tigers… The Tigers will be the #2 seed and the Chanticleers will be the #3 seed… I’ll be telling you more about the teams and times they play as the week goes along.
