The Jesse Tree: A Family Advent Experience

 <p>
As the parents of four kids, my wife and I have always sought ways to make God's Story a reality to our children. Advent (Christmastime) especially lends itself to telling and retelling the Good News. One of the best ways we've found to do this is by using a Jesse Tree during our Advent observance, thanks to our friends, Kent and Kathleen Pelton. They introduced the Jesse Tree idea to us many years ago and we've been using it ever since. Enjoy the article, written by the Peltons, and feel free to download the PDF written by them....or visit the other helpful websites at the bottom of this article. Whatever you do, we pray that you too find a meaningful way to bring the Christmas story alive to your children.

 <img src=http://www.wmc-ap.org//images/blog/philippians-sm.jpg><br>
 <p>
pSudden illness stole everything from Mansueto Tampayan, a family man,
father of three, and a hard-working farmer from T'boli, South Cotabato,
Philippines. Complications from acute diabetes rendered him helpless
and dependent on others. Bedridden for 10 years, his medications and
medical bills consumed all the family's resources. They were forced
to sell their motorbike, then their kalibao (water buffalo), and
finally their property. Mansueto's children had to stop attending
elementary school because they could not afford the fees, and his wife
had to seek odd jobs to sustain them. Years passed and still
Mansueto's condition grew worse. He began losing some of his toes.
Hopelessness and despair were overcoming Mansueto and his family. br /
br /
But all that changed on January 11, 2008. Hope was in the air...or
rather on the air. From his bed, Mansueto tuned in to the World
Mission Broadcast radio ministry Paglaum sa Kinabuhi (Hope of Life).
Through the program, Mansueto began to believe in God's power to heal
him. The spirit of God was at work in his life. br /

/em/font/p
pTwelve energetic, interested people had come for the Video Training.
The training was supposed to be for two days, 8th to the 9th of
January 2009 but junior Vern Ward had added another day to neatly
finish of what he had planned for us. The training was an eye opener
for us because the manner in which junior Vern Ward presented the
lessons was well explained in our very own daily Papua New Guinean
tokples (language) Pidgin'. We realize that we have lots of stories to
tell other Christians friends around our region (Asia Pacific) or the
world of what the Lord is doing in Papua New Guinea especially using
the visual form. It was God's perfect time that the Regional
Communication Office has send the right servant to show us the way on
how to go about it. We praise God for that. br /

pIf you will not go back to full time ministry, Arnel Piliin's wife
threatened, then I will give up my teaching job and be the one to
serve God in full time ministry! Arnel was shocked to hear his wife
Inocencia Bhing Piliin speak so strongly about his work with
insurance. He had only meant to unwind and relax a few years from the
pressure of ministry, but somehow the temptation of making money had
pulled him more and more away from his call. We don't need wealth and
all these extra things as long as we can eat three times a day,
explained his wife. She knew that his decision would mean that she
would be the one to continue working in a secular job to support the
family.
Arnel prayed about his call until one day he finally told his family
that he was willing to give up the luxury of the world. I am willing
to serve God without any reservation, no matter the cost. With the
encouragement of Missionary Timothy Kim, he enrolled at Asia-Pacific
Nazarene Theological Seminary to bring his ministry skills up-to-date. br /

pOften, in our literate culture, we gain information and understanding through the printed page or text rich internet. But the current generation tends to process things more visually and orally, hence the increasing popularity of iPods (MP3 players), EBooks, Podcasts, Videocasts, YouTube, Flikr, Facebook, and the list goes on. Recently, over forty of these orally-oriented students from several Asian nations gathered on the campus of a href=http://www.apnts.edu.ph/Asia-Pacific Nazarene Theological Seminary/a in Manila, Philippines for the Student Leaders Convergence. One of the Filipino students, Ruel Daquitan, attended as both a participant and as a photo journalist. Not only did he learn much through collaboration with other Asian leaders about making Christlike disciples in the unique context of this region but he also saw things differently through the lens of his camera. Ruel shares with us a photo essay that he completed for another course at APNTS, Introduction to Visual Media for Professor Kwon Dong Hwan. Enjoy the visual report and rejoice that our church is raising up so many creative and Godly young people to carry the Gospel to the next generations. br /

pIn it's first month, Krais I Laikim Olgeta Pikinini (KILOP) is now airing on six different radio
stations across the country. They are FM Morobe and FM Central Sepik,
both commercial stations that have offered us free air time. FM
Morobe, located in PNG's second largest city, broadcasts to more than
six hundred thousand people! Two others Christian stations, Catholic
FM and Laif FM, also carry KILOP. The remaining carriers are
government owned radio stations. /pIn English, the title translates to Christ Loves All Kids. Rev. Ekka rejoices in the fact that
None of the radio station is charging us money. Praise the Lord. God
is making everything possible for us! We may be just one month old, but
we are praying and believing that the Lord will work through the KILOP
program to touch and transform the lives of many kids in Papua New
Guinea!
