“Ghosts” (Theme Issue) Submission Period Now Open

The submission period for Witness‘ 2014 Print Issue, “Ghosts,” is now open. From January 1 – March 31, Witness seeks submissions that explore, enlarge, and expand the idea of ghosts, in any and all genres. We encourage submissions that are unique and innovative in their approach to the theme.

From September 1 – December 1, Witness will accept non-thematic general submissions for future issues. Please do not submit thematic work during the general reading period and vice versa.

Witness XXV.3 (Fall 2012) Now Live

Witness Featured in “Top 50 Literary Magazines” List

Every Writer’s Resource lists Witness as number thirty-six in its list of top fifty American literary magazines. Compiling the list, EWS considered date of founding, number of national anthologies publications, and the quality of work of and names published.

Bennett Fellowships Accepting Applications

The application for the 2013-2014 residency cycle is now closed. The application for the 2014-15 fellowship cycle will be posted on September 1, 2013, and the postmark deadline for applications will be December 1, 2013. The 2013-14 fellows will be notified on or before May 1, 2013.

Applications are now being accepted for the Diana L. Bennett Fellowships at the Black Mountain Institute at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Up to three fellowships with a stipend of $50,000 each will be awarded to outstanding writers who have published at least one book in English. Postmark deadline for applications is December 1, 2012.

Past fellows include Tom Bissell, Josip Novakovich, Luljeta Lleshanaku, Timothy O’Grady, Cristina Garcia, and Daniel Brook.

Rekdal Poem Included in Best American Poetry

Paisley Rekdal poem “Wax” was included in the 2012 edition of Best American Poetry. The poem first appeared in Witness’ “Blurring Borders” issue (Vol. XXIV No. 1).
