An easy way to create mind maps

During a meeting at work this week one of the attendees took notes of errors to correct and what to improve when demonstrating the work that they had done. I noticed that the person were using a tool that seemed simple but very effective. A mind mapping tool called FreeMind that after more research turned out to be free as well - it is a sourceforge project.

Here is an example where I try to describe the Wohill blog as a map with Wohill as the parent node. From Wohill we have categories, archives, posts, comments, tags, an rss-feed etc. Categories can in turn be divided up into main categories and sub categories.

In its simpliest form this is very useful; for example during a meeting where you need to take fast notes.
You start by creating a new sheet and by doing so you get a parent node that you can name. From there you click the INSERT button to create a child node. In our example Wohill is the parent node and Categories is a child node to Wohill. While you are on the Categories node you can create a child node to the Categories node by clicking the INSERT button. Or you can create a sibling node by clicking the RETURN button. This work the same way for all nodes. You can not create sibling nodes to the ultimate parent node (Wohill node) though. When you're done with your mindmap you can choose to make it more fancy by making text bold, italic or colorful, changing background color or add icons to them. And if you want to you can export the map as many things, for example HTML, PDF, JPG etc.

This is actually something that I will use in my daily work!

An other face, an other expression

I heard some nice feedback on the pictogram I designed the other day. It is a company looking for a new symbol or logotype. Maybe that could be the pictogram representing them and what they stand for. Of course we will look into that a bit more and create a profile that would suite them just right. Normally we design things when the client has given us some guidelines, ideas or feelings that they are looking for. Even though that might be the case – it is a nice way to approach the company if they already feel that that design is something they have been looking for.

I have made a theme out of these pictograms now – by designing an other face with a new look and expression on his / or her face.

Taking pictures at Vitkobb

I have been out in the Archipelago today. At Möja more exactly… It has been a super nice day. We went out to take some nice pictures of Hasses and Annikas boats – SeaCab. Off to Finnhamn, Sollenkroka and Möja. After some great shots and a good day of riding round in the archipelago we decided to get a few more photos from the island Vitkobb just outside of Ramsmora. So I hopped ashore to climb up to the top of the island to get a nice view of the boats.

I will post some pictures of the boats soon. Now you see a beautiful picture of Möja from Vitkobb.

Add blog updates to Twitter and Facebook easily

I have earlier tried to do this myself and just got tired of it. Now I found an easy way that has probably been around for a while. Maybe it could be useful for you too. This assumes you have an RSS-feed, which you probably do.

First get the blog updates to Twitter:
1. Get an account at Twitterfeed
2. Create new feed
3. Under 'Advanced Settings', add '#fb' as Post Suffix
3. Goto step 2 and authenticate with your Twitter account
4. Create service and all done

Now get them to Facebook:
1. Goto Selective Tweets
2. Press Goto Application and follow the instructions. You will have to specify your Twitter username for example. You can choose to update your profile and/or your Facebook fan page.

So what we have done here is a two stage thing. First update Twitter which in turn updates Facebook.

A cartoon dog

I told you about our summer-guest – Max - The American Cocker-Spaniel. He was a great wee friend and lots of fun.

I sat down here today after going to Toy Story 3 and sketched away on some work I have to get done. I then, as usual, got going on some drafts and some extra sketches. This time I was thinking of Max – the dog - and thought it would be nice to draw a few lines that looked like a little dog-head.

Now I really have to get back to the stuff for tomorrow!

More wild strawberries

In the summertime when you are a kid in Sweden it is common to pick wild strawberries and put them on a straw. This is what all kids did when we visited my mother and uncle this summer.

I like the variation of sharpness in this photo. It goes from blurred to sharp and then back to blurred again in a nice way I think.

And wild strawberries really is summer to me!

Search all your Salesforce code

If you would like to search all code in an Eclipse Salesforce project or perhaps several projects this is how it is quickly done.

1. Click on 'Search' in the Menu

2. Click on 'File...'

3. By default all classes are chosen in the search scope. If you want to add Triggers, click on 'Choose' and scroll down to '*.trigger' and tick that checkbox. Click 'Ok'.

4. You can choose to search all projects in the workspace. Selected by default in the Scope section. Or you can narrow down the search.

5. Click in radio button 'Working set' and click on 'Choose' next to it.

6. Click button 'New'

7. Double click on 'Resource' and check the project(s) you want to search. Click 'Finish'

8. Check the checkbox of the project(s) you want to search. Click 'Ok'

9. Type in a search phrase at the top of the window in section 'Containing text' and press button 'Search'

10. Done, there are all your search results

A facial expression

An expression in a face shows a lot… Or sometimes nothing…
The best is when you need to show as little as possible and yet it is totally clear what you are feeling.

This design is a bit more of a thinking dude or expressive expression. It gives a feeling that you as the person meeting this face for the first time have to interpret what it is saying. With just a few lines and bends – here is an expressive feeling for you.

The American Cocker Spaniel Max

This summer we had a little friend staying for the summer. His name is Max and he is a little black dog (American Cocker Spaniel). He is a happy little fellow that hanged out with us everywhere. We have been lots out in the archipelago and he has been with us every day – all over the place. He seemed to love going out in the boat and hopping ashore to visit our home – and we showed him where we live and what we do.

His own family had a vacation in Turkey this summer and could not bring Max on the trip. That´s how he ended up becoming a real archipelago-dog this year.

It was a superhot summer this year and since he is all black we had to let him cool down in the water now and again. In the picture he just came up out of the water and is sitting resting and enjoying life.

Great summer Max – hope you can come again some time.

Replacing characters with Notepad++

Notepad++ is an excellent tool for text processing of different kinds.

Let's assume you have a CSV-file on this form:

"FIELD 1 HEADER","FIELD 2 HEADER","FIELD 3 HEADER"
"row 1 field 1","row 1 field 2","row 1 field 3"
"row 2 field 1","row 2 field 2","row 2 field 3"
"row 3 field 1","row 3 field 2","row 3 field 3"

And you want it on this form:

FIELD 1 HEADER;FIELD 2 HEADER;FIELD 3 HEADER
row 1 field 1;row 1 field 2;row 1 field 3
row 2 field 1;row 2 field 2;row 2 field 3
row 3 field 1;row 3 field 2;row 3 field 3

When extracting object data using the Sales Data Loader you get a CSV file that is comma separated as the first example above. Each line ends with a new line or more exactly with the characters CRLF (\r\n). Possible line breaks within a column is used with the character
LF (\n).

If you want to load this file into for exampel MySQL later on, you specify what each line ends with and this way line breaks will be preserved within the columns.

Keeping this in mind you can do the following replacements to get the results wished for.

1. Remove first apostrophe

2. Press Ctrl-F and search for any semi-colons. If any are found replace them with something appropriate.

3. Press Ctrl-H (replace dialogue box) and find "," and replace with ;

Now the file will look like this:

FIELD 1 HEADER;FIELD 2 HEADER;FIELD 3 HEADER"
"row 1 field 1;row 1 field 2;row 1 field 3"
"row 2 field 1;row 2 field 2;row 2 field 3"
"row 3 field 1;row 3 field 2;row 3 field 3"

Now if you show all characters (Menu - View - Show all characters) you will see the newline characters.

4. Replace end-of-line characters apostrophes and beginning-of-line apostrophes

4.1 Press Ctrl-H
4.2 Choose Extended Search mode (at the bottom of this dialogue box)
4.3 Find "\r\n" and replace with \r\n

5. Remove last apostrophe
