COMMENTS FROM THE EDITOR ON THE JULY/AUGUST 2025 ISSUE OF JCP
Welcome to the July/August 2025 issue of the Journal of Clinical Psychopharmacology (JCP). There are many interesting articles in this issue which I hope will increase your knowledge and understanding of psychopharmacology. I would like to highlight a few of them.
There is considerable evidence that marketing affects physician prescribing practices, even though physicians themselves may not feel that they are influenced. In a thought-provoking guest editorial, found on pages 305-309, titled, “How Does Drug Company Marketing Affect Physician Prescribing?", Dr. Jeffrey Mattes explores how e-prescribing systems may be one pathway through which pharmaceutical messaging may shape prescribing behavior. In this issue, there are two original contributions on the topic of pharmacogenomics. On pages 310-319, Sanchez-Ruiz and colleagues, in a paper titled "Antidepressant Non-refill as a Proxy Measure for Medication Acceptability in Electronic Health Records" aimed to define Electronic Health Record-derived antidepressant outcome measures and explore their utility in showing associations between treatment outcomes and Cytochrome P450 metabolizer phenotypes in a proof-of-concept study. On pages 320-328, Del Tredici and colleagues, in a paper titled, “Real-World Impact of Pharmacogenomic Testing on Medication Use and Healthcare Resource Utilization in Patients with Major Depressive Disorder" investigated the relationship between significant gene-drug interactions and healthcare resource utilization in a large United States insurance claims dataset.
There is limited information on the use of clozapine in pregnancy. In a Brief Report in this issue, Grover and Gupta, in a paper titled, “Use of Clozapine in Pregnancy: A Retrospective Study from North India" (pages 353-355), report in a small study that the use of clozapine in pregnancy was not associated with congenital malformations but was found to be associated with miscarriage in one-third of pregnancies.
Examining a patient's family history of medication response is a commonly used method to guide physicians in treatment selection.Though it is widely recommended and taught, there are no published reviews that assess the validity of this approach when treating patients with affective disorders. On pages 364-371, Rakofsky and colleagues, in a paper titled, “A Systematic Review to Determine if Family History of Response to Medication Predicts Outcome in Mood Disorders," report that the evidence supporting using family history is weak and should be considered as just one piece of the puzzle and should not override other considerations. On page 411 is our “Ask the Experts" Column with a question this month titled, “Is it safe for people with cancer and other serious conditions to combine cannabidiol with melatonin when neither has worked well enough for insomnia when used alone?"
