Dr. Scott Boden received his BA and MD from the University of Pennsylvania and completed an Orthopaedic Residency at The George Washington University Medical Center, followed by a Spine Fellowship at Case Western Reserve University Hospitals. He is the Clinical Director of the Whitesides Orthopaedic Research Laboratory and has received many awards including the Volvo Award for Low Back Pain Research (four times), The Marshal Urist Young Investigator Award, the North American Spine Society Outstanding Paper Award (seven times), and the AAOS/ORS Kappa Delta Research Award. He has received the Leon Wiltse Award for Outstanding Contributions to the field of spine surgery from the North American Spine Society and is a Deputy Editor for SPINE Journal. Dr. Boden has authored over one hundred and forty peer-reviewed articles on spine and basic science topics as well as thirty chapters and seven textbooks. Dr. Boden is currently a tenured Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the Emory University School of Medicine and serves as the Director of the Emory Orthopaedics and Spine Center.
 Dr. Daryl Fourney completed his medical school and residency training in Neurosurgery at the University of Saskatchewan in Canada. He did a fellowship in neurosurgical oncology with a special interest in spine tumors at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. He developed a research collaboration with Dr. Ziya Gokalsan and Dr. Laurence Rhines that has continued to this day. He has authored more than sixty published peer-reviewed articles and ten book chapters. He was President of the Canadian Spine Society from 2007 to 2009 and is a member of SPINE Journal's Associate Editorial Board. This year he is Annual Meeting Chair for the American Association of Neurological Surgeons and Congress of Neurological Surgeons Joint Section on Disorders of the Spine and Peripheral Nerves. He has been the Director of the Neurosurgery residency training program at the University of Saskatchewan since 2003.

In a rabbit posterolateral fusion model, MASTERGRAFT PUTTY used in an autograft extender mode produced manual palpation and radiographical fusion rates equal to or slightly better than autograft alone.

Abnormal forces and motion occur at the motion segment rostral to a scoliosis fusion. Also, implant strain is high at the proximal end of the construct. Pathomechanics are exacerbated when the ISL/SSL complex is not intact. Biomechanics can be normalized with transition rods at the rostral segment.

In this 6-year prospective study, the predictive value of physical capacity measures for future neck pain was assessed among 220 healthy female volunteers. Neither isometric neck muscle strength nor passive mobility of the cervical spine seemed to have predictive value for later occurrences of neck pain.

A total of 266 patients underwent thoracic “ossification of the ligamentum flavum” operation. Retrospective review of medical records indicated that cerebrospinal fluid leakage caused by dural ossification was common but was effectively resolved by a series of comprehensive treatments.

In this single-surgeon series, revision after the index spinal fusion and instrumentation was required for 4.6% of 502 patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis. The main indications for revision were residual rib deformity, hook dislodgment, and progression of the unfused compensatory curve.

In vivo, computed tomography—based 3-dimensional facet joint space width measurements on a cohort of healthy and symptomatic subjects with lower back pain. This study showed that localized evidence of facet joint space narrowing is influenced by level, facet joint surface region, and aging.

Outcome for patients with primary malignant astrocytomas of the spinal cord remains poor. Current knowledge is incomplete, and understanding the epidemiology, diagnosis, and optimal treatment poses challenges. Using Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results data, our analyses revealed age at diagnosis, pediatric/adult age groups, sex, tumor histology, and extent of resection as prognostic factors.

Complications related to spinal surgery are common and are significantly increased by patient comorbidities. Both minor and major complications were found to increase the cost of care in a prospective assessment of spine surgery complications. Specific patient comorbidities and perioperative complications are associated with increases in the total cost of care to society.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) signal intensity features, morphological features, and quantitative techniques of opposed-phase imaging and diffusion-weighted imaging may act as important predictors for discriminating benign from malignant vertebral compression fractures. The overall diagnostic performance of combining these MRI features in not known.

A multicentered randomized clinical trial was performed comparing the outcomes of Grafton DBM Matrix with local bone with that of iliac crest bone graft (ICBG) in a single-level instrumented posterior lumbar fusion. Final fusion rates were 86% (Grafton Matrix) versus 92% (ICBG) (not significant). Comparable clinical outcomes were obtained in Grafton Matrix group compared with the ICBG group, using the Oswestry Disability Index and Medical Outcomes Study 36-Item Short Form Health Survey outcomes measures.

A computed tomography (CT)-based anatomical and virtual screw placement analysis was performed to define the morphometric and volumetric variance of the C3–C7 laminae and to evaluate their translaminar screw placement feasibility. Results indicate that translaminar screw placement is a potentially safe and effective technique to use with preoperative CT scanning, both unilaterally (C3–C7) and bilaterally (C7).

We generated virtual endoscopic images of the spine from the multislice computed tomographic data. Virtual endoscopy of the spine may be useful to surgeons for diagnosis, preoperative planning, and postoperative assessment by obviating the need to mentally construct a 3-dimensional picture of the spinal canal.

Atlas injuries due to horizontally aligned head-first impact included 3- or 4-part burst fractures or lateral mass fracture. Varied atlas fracture patterns were due primarily to radial forces causing outward expansion of its lateral masses. Bony transverse ligament avulsion unilaterally was documented in all specimens that sustained burst fractures.

This is the first study to systematically investigate the sagittal lumbosacral spine morphology in Chinese girls with idiopathic thoracic scoliosis (T-AIS) and age-matched healthy girls. The Chinese girls with T-AIS have the similar pelvic incidence, pelvic tilt, and sacrum slope values in comparison with the age-matched healthy girls. There are significant differences in pelvic morphology between Chinese and white girls with AIS.
