Per her request, I recorded my process for figuring out how to create an RSS powered email for her.  The funny thing is, I made the same mistake they did!  At first, I created the newsletter using a non-RSS template.  In this video, you will see my entire process INCLUDING my mistake so you won’t make it, too!

Although it may seem like such a small thing, the name and title of your image are important.  Before you even upload an image to your site, you should rename it to indicate what the image contains.  When you do this, don’t be complicated.  Use something like BlueBunny.jpg instead of Blue_Bunny_24.jpg.  Chances are you do not have 24 bunnies in your media folder.

In my opinion, SEO is really all about being organized.  Much of what SEO is about is communicating to a robot – literally.  Robots do not think like humans.  They are super logical and just want to get down to business.  If your site information is a mess, if your images are a bunch of numbers and characters, and if it’s hard to find what they are looking for they will just move on.

Tip #2:  Don’t be lazy.

One EASY way to stay on top of your SEO is to rename your images before uploading and then if you are using WordPress it is really easy to fill in the boxes for Title and Alt Text.  The ‘bot wants to know what is up with the image.  It wants more details than just want the name of the file is, it wants to know what you would call that file if you weren’t naming it BlueBunny.jpg.  You might call it “Blue Bunny from Africa”.  You can use the same information in the Title and the Alt Text.  The Alt Text is extra important though because it is what comes up when someone hovers over an image – unless in your code that feature is turned off.  Most likely it isn’t.

Both of these are also important because of Pinterest.  On my other site, Pinterest is the largest driving force for visitors to my site – larger than every else, even Google.  When someone goes to pin and image from your site to Pinterest, it’s going to call up the Alt Text for that image and put it in the description of the Pin automatically.  Because most people are too lazy to actually type something there, this is very important.  You also have the opportunity to CHOOSE what shows up on Pinterest because if it looks great and makes sense for describing the image, most people will opt to just leave the text that automatically appears!

In order to fully own your site, domain name, and content you need to be self-hosted.  This means you pay a host typically a monthly fee and you purchase the domain name typically for an annual fee.

This is how I recommend you set up your self-hosted SEO-friendly site:

1.  Find out if you own your domain name or have hosting.  Call the company you purchased it from.  If you do not have a phone number of the company (e.g. it’s WordPress.com), it is a sign you don’t actually own the domain name or pay for hosting.  It probably means you are essentially renting the domain name from them.  You don’t have to stop using WordPress to stop “renting” from them!  There is another version of WordPress that allows you to use the software for free while owning your own domain name that is hosted by a company you choose.

2.  Get your domain name and hosting from the same place.  I’ve worked with Fat Cow Hosting for quite awhile not (almost 2 years) and I strongly recommend them.  You can pick up the phone and talk to a real person.  They are always helpful.  They will literally work around the clock when you have a problem.  If you do own your domain name somewhere else (e.g. GoDaddy) they will walk you through the process to transfer it to them.  It’s worth it.  What is really cool is that Fat Cow uses Wind Energy so you aren’t harming the environment by going with them.  And they have really reasonable prices!  That include unlimited email accounts usually and all kinds of great stuff.

3.  Choose to use WordPress and get the Genesis Framework.  Wordpress is HUNDREDS, maybe even THOUSANDS, of times better with GF.  Just google it.  Anyone who is anyone on the internet is using Genesis Framework on a self-hosted site using WordPress.  All the cool kids are doing it.  The point is though that it just works.  It is SEO-Friendly and makes it really easy for you to get your site and posts found.  That is inbound marketing at it’s best.

4.  Pick out a professionally designed theme.  This is also what’s awesome about Genesis Framework which is part of Studiopress.  Seriously, these themes are worth every dime.  They are designed by the top professionals in their field and are created with SEO in mind.  They are fully customizable.  The customization is actually built-in to the theme.
