Anyone shops at our Liquor Control Board of Ontario (which is our liquor store) They look to be heading for a strike beginning May 18th. Purchase your liquor before crossing the border. Our Brewers Retail will still be open but they sell beer only. Any little liquor store like Dutchies in Perrault Falls will not be open as far as I know.

Looking forward to a great opener!

Keep your line tight.

Debbie and I headed to camp Monday, May 6. We arrived on a beautiful day. a warm breeze was melting snow and ice. It was a slow trip in with loaded vehicles and watching fro frost heaves in the road.

The generator fired right up for me and we unloaded the gear. Checked the cabins for any major damage and all was good.

The phone is working but our internet satellite is out of whack so we have no internet. I have come back to Dryden for some roofing supplies and to check email. If you need to reach us, call 807-222-2068 between 7-8am or 8-9:30 pm. The rest of the time we will be out working and may not hear the phone. The phone is only turned on between 7am and 9:30pm to be sure we get our rest.

I drilled a hole in the ice May 8, about 50 ft out from the dock. There was about a foot of slush and then only 10 inches of ice. Hopefully it will be long gone by May 18.

Winter was hard on the cabins with frost heaving the buildings and decks. But hopefully we can have things running as smoothly as possible by the time guests arrive. We have yet to hook up water so we are pailing from the lake and heating it up on the outdoor cookers to clean cabins. Of course there are no boats in the lake yet.

Hopefully we will have the internet up and running in the next few days. Otherwise, I may have to drive to town for updates and possibly watch the odd NHL playoff game. (GO LEAFS)

Stay tuned for further updates.

We are experiencing a late spring up here in the north. So when traveling in Northwestern Ontario, keep in mind road conditions can change daily. The frost is not close to coming out of the ground as it is still covered in snow! Here are some things to look out for when traveling in Northwestern Ontario.

Water over the road.

This is quite dangerous when traveling at high speeds. Your vehicle may hydro plane out of control. Be sure to slow down and crawl through the water. It sounds a little weird but it is best to travel through the wider spot of water. This is especially true on gravel roads. The water will puddle until it reaches a spot where it can start flowing across the road. The trickle across the road will start to erode and trench out the road. But where the puddle is, usually there isn’t any erosion. It is best to get out and either walk across and check the depth and see if there is a wash out. Proceed through the puddle slowly so you don’t help with the erosion. I traveled South Bay Road on Sunday afternoon and by Monday afternoon, there was a 3ft deep wash out. There was no water on the road when I had traveled and things were great. That’s how fast conditions change when traveling in Northwestern Ontario.

Frost Heaves

These bad boys spring up out of nowhere and can be tough to see on some of the roads when traveling in Northwestern Ontario. On our access road, there are stretches where the heaves are very prominent because of the high clay content under the base layer of the road. Be sure your motor is trimmed up if you are towing a boat. These heaves can be hard on your shocks and definitely a chance to bottom out your vehicle.

Road Construction

At the present time, I am aware of two construction projects which will slow down motorists when traveling in Northwestern Ontario from Fort Frances to Ear Falls. One is on the causeway just west of Fort Frances on Hwy 11. It is a temporary stop light as a section of the causeway is down to one lane. The other construction site is along Hwy 17 between Dryden and Vermillion Bay. They began repairs on a bridge and it too is restricted to one lane by a set of lights. I am not sure if either project will be completed before the tourist season starts. An alternate route would be to head west out of Fort Frances and come up Hwy 71 then turn east on Hwy 17 to Vermillion Bay and north to Woman River Camp.

Wildlife

Tis the season to see lots of wildlife along any road as the come down to the ditches for salt and get away from the bugs. Keep a watchful eye but be especially cautious at dawn and dusk.

Be cautious of animals along the roads when traveling in Northwestern Ontario

Remember

no radar detectors in Ontario

The use of hand held electronic devices are illegal. Only hands free operation.

1.6km in 1 mile.

90kmph = 55 mph

When looking for points of interest, download the new Sunset Country Mobile APP from Sunset Country Travel Association.

Have a safe trip and we hope to see you on the water!

Cheers,

Ear Falls Area July Fishing Report

Fishing has been excellent overall this year!

At the present time, Walleye are being caught along weed edges 5-12 feet deep. Still landing lunkers in the current areas and the fish are finally starting to move to rock points and humps. A little breeze sure helps. Fish the windy side of the lake.

We have been hit with the heat wave as well and the fish become as lazy as the rest of us. Trolling spinners, jigging and casting cranks have worked the past week. No special colours. We are even catching trophies on spoons.

Smallmouth Bass fishing was good early and the fish are now moving off their nests and schooling up. Find a couple and fish the spot aggressively then go back and slow down the presentation to pick up a few more. In-line spinners and rattln raps are working well. Twitch the floating Rapala on the surface for some explosions.

Northern Pike fishing has seen the monster fish move deep and we catch them while Walleye fishing or go looking for “hooks” on the graph by themselves on dropoffs. We edges are still producing good size fish.

Yellow Perch have started to feed and can be caught along and in the weeds.

Lake Trout are all deep but can be jigged up or use a three-way swivel and some lead to reach the fish. They are always a great fight.

Wet June Refreshes Water Levels

With a couple of wet weeks in early June, our water levels have come back up and we are able to access Rosen Lake, and the creek to Spot. Hopefully it will continue to rain weekly and keep the lake levels up.

July Heat Wave! Summer Is Here

With the heat wave, surface temps are in the high 70′s and summer has arrived. Guests have been catching more fish in the early morning and late evenings. When it has been warm and no wind.

Calf Moose

Portage lakes have been fishing really well although Narrow was a tough fish when I was there on Sunday. I sure do like a little wind when fishing up there. Otherwise all the other lakes are doing very well.

When it comes to bait, I am a minnow guy but the leeches and crawlers have out fished the minnow a couple days this year. Let the fish tell you what they want.

Camp projects

We have been busy replenishing the firewood supply.

The new generator is here and waiting on some new wiring.

We built new picnic tables for the camp cookout. Last week, Lyle treated us to some guitar and singing after the cookout. A good time had by all.

Cabin 3 has a new roof installed.

We just ordered stain to spritz up the outside of the cabins….

More projects on the list!

Letter From Canadian Federal Parliament

We have finally received some clarification regarding the Temporary Residence Permits (TRP) for one time offenders of minor criminality! Such as a DUI with no jail time served.

Our federal member of parliament, Greg Rickford, sent this letter to our Patricia Region Tourist Council, of which Woman River Camp is a member.

Starting at about paragraph 4 it begins to explain the details about the one time pass. Some of your questions may be answered in the frequently asked questions section on the government website.

At The KDCA Meeting

At our KDCA meeting, Friday May 4, the Immigrations officers answered our question and these were the main points.

the TRP is a one time waiver for a person with one criminal offense with no jail time

upon arriving at the border, an officer will conduct a risk assessment with you regarding you specifically. This assessment is to determine if you would be a risk to others in Canada. (So the guy with one DUI and no jail time is a low risk compared to the individual who assaulted four guys at a bar with a pool cue.) At this time, the officer will also give you a package and explain the application process you are required to complete for your specific requirements for future entry.

there is no second entry in the same year but if you are permitted to start your rehabilitation, and the process has been started, they may take that into consideration.

entry still remains at the discretion of the Border Crossing Officer Agent who conducts your risk assessment. However, at any time you are allowed to talk with a supervisor. This eliminates an officer having a bad day.

This is great news for those who have been turned away at the border for minor criminal charges like DUI or shoplifting.

I would take advantage of it and hopefully in the future, the government keeps waiving the fee. The tourism industry is lobbying for the law to be changed and hopefully this will be done by next year.

Get The Rehabilitation Kit!

For those who would like to complete the rehabilitation kit, a link can be found on our website page cool links.

Looks like our government is finally coming around and understanding tourism business is down and some of the laws just need to be lightened up a bit!

Debbie and I made our way north to camp on Good Friday. The lake was still half frozen. April 12, we took another load of supplies up and all the ice was gone. There was still some snow in the shade but open water for as far as we could see.

Earliest ice out ever?

I am not sure but it is definitely the earliest I have seen in my 23 years on the water.

We have moved into camp and are cleaning and readying all the equipment for the upcoming season. Valerie-Ann has finished her first year of college and has been a great help with cabins too.

We have already had a group of early season Northern Pike / Lake Trout fishermen come and go home with big smiles. Check out the double header of a 40″ and 43″ Monsters! Our phone in camp is now working but I am getting older so I don’t hear the phone ring as well and I sure don’t sprint like I used to so it is easiest to reach us via email.

See you on the water.

Come down and plan your fishing trip to Canada!

Fishing trips to Canada are a great time for old college buddies to get together. A parent to bond with a child, a great place to relax and enjoy some of the best fishing and scenery the world has to offer!
