Little Hainan

There's a new eatery in town called Little Hainan and it's situated at Bormill, right under Studio 23.

My knowledge of Hainan cruisine is rather limited but mention the word Hainan and chicken rice springs to mind.

True enough, the house specialty was the Hainan Chicken rice and wanting to get the most out of the menu, we ordered the "The Curry Rice" (with steam chicken, lou bak, Char Siew and half a 'lou nurng/egg') and the "3 Meat Rice" (Curry Rice with out the curry)

The meats together with the curry gravy was indeed tasty but I thought the portion of meat could have been more. Then again, I am a big eater :P The rice balls added a nice touch to the presentation and I really liked the pickled cucumber and carrots too.

The interior is really nice in an old school way which really creates a cosy ambiance and the service was up to par with the working in an efficient and friendly manner.

I would though like to see Little Hainan expand their menu (which is divided in breakfast, lunch and dinner) to include side dishes like vegetables for order.

Can't remember the prices for the individual dishes but it came up to about RM17.00 for two which I thought was reasonable. (2 drinks, one curry rice, one 3 meat rice, one extra serve of rice and two 'lou nurng /eggs')

Well worth a return visit in future.

I have a question.

Do Dvd players have a life span?

I bought a Phillips (is it one or two l's?) Dvd player about 4 years ago and it worked beautifully.

But fast forward to the present and it's gone completely bonkers. Not to mention, it's driving me nutz! I put in a Dvd and it says 'no disc'. When it actually plays a Dvd, it hangs at regular intervals. What givesss?

I would say the Dvd player on average, goes through at least 45 minutes of usage a day. Therefore..

4 years (365 X 4) = 1460 days.

1460 days X 45 minutes = 65,700 minutes

65,700 / 60 = 1095 hours.

1095 hours = About 625.714 movies running at a duration of 1h 45min duration.

(I was never good at math, so the calculation could be horriblyy wrong. But you get the gist)

So, if anyone out there could enlighten me (maybe its the laser thingamajig, or its time to just get a new player), I would be most obliged.

The Need for Speed

Jenson Button was recently crowned the F1 champ in Brazil and he did it in an expensive F1 car no less.

For those of us who can't drive along side Jenson Button and Co. there's always the next best thing. Go Karting!

Alot have already tried it, most have heard about it but for the unitiated, Go Karting is available right here in Kuching and its indoors too. Where you ask?

Situated along Jalan Kemajuan (Next to the Borneo Post office), Velocity houses a new and improved, indoor go kart track that allow 5 drivers to race at any given time.

Velocity's waiting/briefing/reception area is air conditioned, cosy and there's even free wifi.

"But I have never driven a kart before." No Worries.

"Any racer eight years or older is a qualified kart racer. No Prior kart experience is required to race at Velocity. All you need to bring is the drive to compete and win." Velocity Indoor Go Karting.

Karts powered by a mighty 6.5HP Honda Engine allows the driver to feel the thrill and rush of racing on the track.

But whilst it's important to have fun, safety is key and is never compromised at Velocity. Before getting into the karts, drivers will each be given a neck brace (to help the neck adjust to the force when driving) and a helmet to wear.

Additionally, all racers must be at least 4'4" or 52 inches tall and if under the age of 18, a parent or legal guardian must be present.

You will also need to wear either a hair net or balaclava before putting on the helmet. Both are available for purchase for RM0.50 and RM9.00 respectively. Gloves are optional.

Once you are geared up, its time to Race! and I have to say, it really is quite an experience.

From acellerating down the straight, or taking a corner, to finding the best racing line to overtake, you can't help but feel the adrenalin rush and excitement.

Rest assured that all necessary safety measures are taken to ensure that you have a fun and safe racing experience. This is certainly something the kids and even grown ups will enjoy.

Each race will cost you RM26.00 for a 10 minute racing sesssion. But watch out for the different daily promotions (6.00pm - 10.00pm) on offer for a bargain.

For instance:-

On Monday,
Pay for 2 races on Monday and get another one free!

Tuesday is members and couples night, so members only pay RM15.00 per race and each couple only pays RM25.00 per race!

10 minutes not enough for you? Race for 20 minutes on Wednesday and pay only RM30.00!

Have a big group? Go on Thursday and you pay only RM100.00 for 6 tickets. (6 People, one race per person)

Be sure to check out the other promotions as well.

So if you haven't tried go-karting, it's time to start today.

But aside from Go-Karting, Velocity also have LaserTag games, a Pool table, a foosball table and the WaterTag games (new addition) so there's something for everyone at Velocity.

I have always been a fan of Penang Fried Kueh Tiaw and the ones you get here aren't exactly authentic. So I was talking to my Lady one day and she recommended this one stall that served very good Penang Fried Kueh Tiaw. So we decided to have lunch there one Saturday afternoon.

If you can't find the best, settle for an alternative I suppose.

This is Yeow Kee Kopitiam at Premier 101.

Trying it out for the first time, I opted for the RM4.50 offering of Fried Kueh Tiaw with clams.

As I observed the Kopitiam, I couldn't help but notice a plate of Fried Kueh Tiaw on most of the tables, so business must have been brisk for the stall. A good sign of things to come?

Shortly after we were served our drinks, the Fried Kueh Tiaw arrived and I tell you, just the look and smell alone had me salivating in anticipation.

I wanted to try it 'original' so I had the chili paste on the side. And how did it fare?

Very tasty indeed. The Kueh Tiaw was fried with sufficient 'wok hei' or wok breath, which gave it that really nice texture. The prawns were fresh and there was a generous amount of clams as well. It wasn't very oily too, which was great and tasted even better when I mixed in the chili paste. Though that said, the absence of 'lap cheong' (chinese sausage) was noticeable. Would have been even better if there was. Maybe they ran out. Portion could have been bigger but was reasonable if you compare it to other eateries.

My lady also ordered some extras, from the 'Q Q rice stall'. This here is the 'Rice Ball'. I know, it looks more like a 'panggang' but it comes with alot more 'liau' inside.

This one had 'eu char kueh, chicken meat, some boiled egg amongst other ingredients and tasted good. At RM2.50 (If i am not mistaken) it's worth a try as an addition to your main order.

So, if you're craving for Penang Fried Kueh Tiaw, you know where to go.

A night at Krista's

On the 25th of September a group of us were invited to Krista kindergarden's annual 'Tanglung' night at Taman Centurion to celebrate the mid autumn festival. Wootz!

For the uninitiated, Krista at Taman Centurion is one of 5 branches in Kuching and is part of the largest kindergarden chain in Malaysia.

"Let your child shine like a star"

The mid autumn festival or moon cake festival is usually a time when we feast with our family and light up lanterns. At Krista's, the mid autumn festival is celebrated on a big scale together as one big family!

It's a good thing Krista occupies two semi detached house lots (which was nicely decorated with lanterns) because everyone (kids, their families, teachers and friends) came that night.

Even big named sponsors like Sundrop, Copal Digital, Sushi King, Pureen to name a few, joined in the fun and festivities by setting up stalls within the Kindergarden compound.

When we arrived, I couldn't help but notice that there was a ton of food laid out nicely on tables and I was pleasantly surprised to discover that it was in fact, a hugeeee potluck with parents and teachers bringing along dishes to share.

I love potluck. There's always a great variety of foods and it has that cosy feeling to it.

But that wasn't all, the night was lined up with several fun activities.

For startes, there was the souvenir presentation for the kind sponsors.

I thought the picture was a nice touch.

The lantern walk which was very fun to see.

The candy search which had the kids scrambling for the 5,000 sweets that were scattered around.

All in all, the group and I had a great time that night.

For that, I must say a huge thank you to Mr. John Koh who kindly had us over for the celebrations as well as Annna who extended the invitations.

It's been a veryyy long time since I left Kindergarden and I am honestly quite amazed with how much Kindergardens have since developed. I was certainly impressed with what I saw at Krista's.

The Blitz

Man.

Time has become a luxury of late and when it rains, it certainly pours. But a short update amongst other outstanding posts~

First up, team Blitz Fury took part in the 5 v. 5, SSC Paintball Cup 2009 nearly two weeks ago. This was the first time we played the 5 v. 5 format and it was certainly an interesting learning experience having 10 people on the field.

Anyways, I am glad to report Team Blitz Fury did well and claimed third place! Wootz! (*cough* no mention of the number of teams *cough* Lol)

For our efforts, we were awarded medals and a cash prize of RM200.00 (split by 6).

We have really grown as a team and our progress has certainly been positive with each competitive outing.

There's going to be another Paintball competition next January and hopefully we will do even better then.

How to ..

We interrupt this broadcast to bring you a random rant.

Today's topic. "How to lose a customer in 4 steps."

Step one : Tell the customer that the goods he ordered today will be delivered the next day.

Step two : The next day, remember to call the customer early in the morning (i.e 8.00am) to confirm that the goods he ordered will be delivered later in the afternoon.

Step three : When the customer calls up later (i.e at 3.30pm) to ask what time the goods will be delivered. Casually, inform him that the goods could not be sent because of one or both the following reasons:-
i. "We are very busy today."
ii. "The delivery truck has left without your goods."

Step four : The customer is ticked off at this point, but fear not. Casually inform him that his goods will be delivered the next morning. Oh, and don't forget to tell him that you can't confirm what time the next morning.

This here is the Timun Special! only at ABC Food Centre. Lol. Thanks to Tmot for the treat.

Odd it may look, but surprisingly convenient to eat. Though at a price of RM2.00 (one timun sliced into two) it seems rather pricey. Still, worth a try if you like Cucumber with the Rojak paste.

So this guy came to my house to fix something and as fate would have it, he came over to fix something else 10 years ago. It's a pleasant coincidence but no big deal right, so I thought.

But this guy kept harping on and on about how he had come over 10 years ago to do some fixing work and that he remembered how he did it etc etc etc and there I was thinking if this guy was a burglar planning a break in.

Mention it once to break the ice, I don't mind. Mention it again to make conversation, I still don't mind. But at the rate he was going, I felt rather awkward.

I mean, so you were here 10 years ago. What do you want? A cookie???

So my mechanic told me the car alarm wasn't working. Which meant another visit to the car accessory shop.

Turns out the alarm was getting faulty and the siren went bonkers! I didn't see a reason to splash out too much for a new set so I asked for an 'economical' option.

Pixar's latest offering is so good it can only go 'UP', (pun intended) hyuks.

Directed by Pete Docter, Co-directed and written by Bob Peterson, 'UP' is a heartwarming story about a 78-year-old man, Carl Fredricksen who sets out to fulfill his lifelong dream to see the wilds of South America.

As with all Pixar movies, the animation is superb. The storyline was refreshing and entertaining, especially the first 15 minutes. Awesome story telling. The characters are lovable and even the villain earns a bit of sympathy.

Anyways, I rely loved it and left the cinema feeling quite touched and warm inside. Watch 'UP' even if you don't like 'cartoons'. It's worth it.

I give it a thumbs 'UP' rating of : 9/10

On another note, I don't know about you, but this year's Merdeka was really... bland? Didn't feel the atmosphere at all. But then again, any public holiday is FuNtAsTic!!

And a big thank you to Steve and Yienyien for hosting yesterday's BbQ and thank you to Tim, Ting and Ah Paul for 'penging' the foodz! It was certainly a lovely evening!

Merdeka day beckons and September is just around the corner.

Juggling is an art and it's something I am starting to learn. Metaphorically anyway. There has just been a ton of things to do but I am thankful that there haven't been any significant problems along the way.

I was going to write a really long wordy post but I am having problems articulating my thoughts at the moment.

The kitchen has added a spankin' new bread maker to it's artillery and the sister unit took it for a spin in the afternoon.

Rather late I know, but we didn't get a top four finish on Sunday. Even so, the Kuching Cup 2009 outing this round was a great experience. Thumbs up to BPP Stadium Paintball for a job well done organizing the event.

Really had a great time with the guyz and considering we hardly ever practiced, I think we performed very well as a team. Sean, Cecil, Raymond, I will spray paint with you all anywhere, any time bros. Blitz Fury!

And so another week passes by and I am waiting to see what lies ahead in the distant future.

4 years seems like a long time. But then again, it's just one number. Even so, I am surprised it's passed by so quickly.

I am thankful though that it's been a pleasant ride so far. I hope the next 4 years will be even better.

That aside, be sure to load up on the liquids and vitamins everyone. It doesn't look like the haze is leaving us anytime soon.
