This September the Women’s Mafia Fashion Show will feature the winners of their signature “Are You Runway Ready” contest, in an exclusive show at Tela Design Studio in the Meatpacking District on September 9th, 2010 at 6pm.

The Women’s Mafia signature catwalk competition lionizes the best independent labels by featuring winning designers to an exclusive, high profile invite-only event attended by press, top stylists, celebrity designers and key members of New York’s Design cognoscenti.

The Spring/Summer 2011 Women’s Mafia Fashion Show will feature:

PRIESTESS NYC by Cody Ross, is a line celebrating directional fashion, artisanship, subversive tendencies, extravaganza and fun. His label already has a certifiably cool fan-base and cult-following including Natalie Portman, Juliette Lewis, Elly from La Roux and Björk and to name a few. He vigorously designs and curates PRIESTESS NYC – an avant-garde womenswear/unisex label (launched in 2008) that has tons of edge, sex-appeal and artistic “fabulosity.”  The PRIESTESS NYC atelier is located in the West Village, NYC.

PHUONG MY, a San Francisco based designer, will make her New York Fashion Week debut with the Women’s Mafia. Known for her exquisite hand-sewn work for private customers in California, she creates garments for women who love to look beautiful all the time. All her garments are delicately beautiful and designed to fit and perfect the body form. She loves to drape fabric to play with form and shape to express different ways of the silhouette.

DOMINIQUE AUXILLY taught herself to sew at the age of 16 while attending Fashion Industries High School in NYC, majoring in Fashion marketing. She then continued her studies in Fashion Marketing at L.I.M College in NYC while designing custom dresses at home. She gained a clientele by wearing her own designs to parties. Dominique Auxilly has been worn by Nicki Minaj, Angela Simmons, Dawn Richards, Rocsi, host of 106 and park and Def Jam recording artist, Electrick Red, and has been featured in various print and online magazines.

Guests of the event will enjoy Chocolate and Wine tastings by ChocoVin, a collaboration between two Women owned business – Luxx Chocolat and Winerium. The theme of the tastings will be “Edible Couture.” Our event hosts, Tela Design Studio, the home of Tela Beauty Organics (the 1st FDA certified organic hair and skincare line) by celebrity stylist Philip Pelusi, will provide coveted gift bags and exclusive perks for guests. Makeup for the show will be provided by Smashbox and the signature looks created by Makeup By Leora.

Women’s Mafia member Jodi Leib is a multimedia artist and filmmaker. Her work displays an unconventional philosophy dedicated to cultural awareness and resolving conflict. Her paintings have shown in New York, Connecticut, and Detroit, where many of her paintings reside in private collections.

Jodi Leib’s artistic style is bold, colorful, raw, and edgy. She explores themes related to sexuality, war, relationships, harmony, violence, and music. Her brush strokes are broad and varied, sometimes using fine lines and geometrical shapes and other times liberally painting through improvisation.

She joins Dorothy Blau’s “New Faces” at Bego Ezair Gallery from July 3 – September 6, 2010, with a reception held on Saturday, August 7th from 6:00-8:00pm. Dorothy Blau’s career spans 53 years, from her gallery in Bal Harbour, FL and internationally with renowned artists including Andy Warhol, Keith Haring, and Hans Hofmann. In this exhibition, “New Faces” artists include Jodi Leib, James Berenson, Mary Hughes, Perci Chester, and Paul Kwok.

Jodi Leib’s artwork has shown in exhibitions for Iraq Moratorium, GLAAD, AdCraft Club of Detroit, and New York International Independent Film & Video Festival. Her short films, Woman’s Solitude and Red Love Redemption, have shown at film festivals and screenings including the Laemmle Theaters, Wine Country Film Festival, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences, New York International Independent Film & Video Festival and the Screen Actors Guild. Her current project Monday’s Child is a dramatic feature length film about women’s reproductive health.

WM: What is your artwork about?
JL: My artwork tells the story of what it is to be American today. There’s a lot of identity confusion about who we are in the world from the global perspective and uncertainty about what will be in the future. My paintings identify these feelings of displacement and yet transform them into feelings of hope.

WM: Why do you choose to take a political stand with your work?
JL: Politics is not a dirty word and still people are ashamed to align themselves with political causes. If anything, my artwork seeks to build bridges by generating cultural awareness and transformation.

WM: What is your signature style?
JL: I choose to work in broad colorful strokes that represent the vibrancy of our culture. I keep a raw edge to communicate subtext and the inner conflict I mentioned.

WM: Where are you headed as an artist?
JL: I will continue to use art as a way to mirror our inner realities and to put forth beauty that speaks to a generation looking for direction and positive role models. I want my art to inspire thought, passion, and heroism – to reflect our time.

“Grow your business as we get In Your Business!” In Your Business (IYB) is pleased to announce the 1st Annual IYB Event that will give the small business owners and entrepreneurs the opportunity to come together to connect their businesses and exchange business cards.

The event will take place the evening of Thursday, August 5th at Sunshine Suites, a company that provides affordable office space to entrepreneurs.

IYB will be extending invitations to those they have worked with as well as other inspiring businesses that deserve to be noticed. Those interested in starting their own businesses are encouraged to attend.

In Your Business knows the importance of choosing to spend “locally” and aims to build clientele for the featured small businesses at this event. IYB also wants to reinforce and raise awareness to minorities that business ownership is an attainable option.

The event features educational aspects with an inspirational keynote speaker, Valerie Orsoni, creator of LeBootCamp®. She will discuss how to start a business and what steps to take in order to grow one.

Counselors from SCORE will also be at the event to provide information about their services that support small businesses as well as answers to questions guests have about starting their own business or growing their current business.

IYB will be asking guests what questions they have about starting, growing and sustaining their businesses. Then, after the event, IYB will research and post answers to their questions on their website. Guests will also have the opportunity to be filmed pitching their own businesses for a chance to be featured on the show.

Frank Ayala Films will be giving away a promotional video to the company whose story they find the most interesting to shoot. Their production team will help them write, shoot and edit their story, so they can connect with their audience on a personal level.

Businesses previously shot by IYB will be featured on TV screens throughout the event on a continuous loop including the premier of Show 4. For all attending guests, IYB hopes to inspire everyone to follow their business dreams.

The Women’s Mafia Fashion Show at Bryant Park

Andarina Designs was just coming together.  Inspired by a set of antique glass swizzle sticks, I had been working everyday, designing lamps and chandeliers that threw beams of light through rods of colored glass.

I told my good friend Marcy Clark how excited I was about starting my company.  After watching Marcy conceive of and launch Women’s Mafia, and attending fantastic Women’s Mafia and Yellow Sky Agency events for years, I told Marcy that within a couple of months, I’d be ready to let her plan the launch for Andarina Designs.

But Marcy had another idea.  She suggested I design the lighting for The Women’s Mafia and EngieStyle fashion presentation and launch party “Once Upon A Time” which would benefit a cause I love, the MillionTreesNYC project.  Marcy said she would love to see some of my pieces hung right over the runway.  I was thrilled!  And Engie’s first collection, Rouge et Noir was done in a palette that seemed just right beside my first collection’s rich jewel tones.  Oh, just one thing: the event was only two weeks away!

I called my brilliant design consultant, Roseanne Percivalle, and we stayed up late into the night making sketches.  We would need a lot of glass and each rod must be flame worked by hand before being kiln-cured.

Luckily I had just agreed to a collaboration with the ladies of the Bead Project at Urban Glass.  One of my glass instructors at Urban Glass, Laurie Korowitz, heads up this non-profit project, which teaches talented women glass-working skills.  My project would be their first paid gig!  As a brand new glass artist, I was thrilled to become a part of the community and to meet such a fun group of women.  We had already devised a work schedule but, with fingers crossed, I called Laurie to ask if we could…well… triple the amount we had planned to pump out over the next week.

I was still nervous so I wanted to consult with a stage lighting expert.  Serendipity, in the form of my amazing friend and neighbor Sven Henry Nelson led me to Derek Van Heel, and Derek soon made clear just how much light we needed, and his input changed our vision completely. Somehow, we found ourselves working on an eighteen by four foot, jewel-toned chandelier.

Engie is a new designer like me, so I knew how incredibly important it was to flatter her designs and make sure this event went off like a rocket ship.  With just over a week to make it happen, I decided to bring in Tinc Design and Production Company.

At 1am the night before the event, Sven and I were hip-deep in bundles of glass rods, meticulously counted and sorted by color.  We had pieces of perforated stainless steel hung on sawhorses in my dining room– we were still tinkering around with color placement!  The actual, massive piece had to be assembled on site the day of the show, and taken down right after!

We made runs between Union Square Ballroom and Brooklyn to pick up still-warm glass rods as Laurie and the Bead Project ladies worked right up until the last minute. I left them just enough time to get glammed-up and attend the show.
I was beyond happy with how the chandelier turned out. We were all pretty proud of ourselves!   As Marcy says, “a large group of women getting together is, in and of itself, a powerful thing.”  Working with the ladies of the Bead Project, I found that to be very true.   As much as I value getting to see my ideas become a reality and getting my company off the ground, I cherish the experience of collaboration even more.  I feel fated and lucky to work with Marcy, Women’s Mafia, EngieStyle, and the Bead Project.  It seemed like the bigger my ideas and plans got, the more perfect people showed up with the perfect skill set, at the perfect time.

Andarina Designs fits into a larger dream of mine.  I like to say it’s a feast with a seat for everyone at the table.
