There can be a stage of woodworking where you question your methods, your design, your technique.

To help solve any self-doubt, build something incredibly simple. And give it away.

With that idea in mind, the photo shows kids eyeing the new trophy they could win as champion readers. The base took minutes of shop time, but adds an air of authenticity to an otherwise normal trophy.

Tool Chest Photos

Effort to photograph each of the tools found in the chest has run into some technical issues. The issue? I can’t take a picture.

Well, not exactly true. You only have to push a button to take a picture and that is not too hard. Getting a high (enough) quality picture is proving to be difficult. I set-up a homemade light tent but there are still shadow issues. It was getting cold in the unheated barn, so I’m going to re-tool (ouch) the process and try again. I think these tools deserve better.

Tool Chest : Till 1

I started going through the tool chest and decided to start at the top. Here is the uppermost removable tool till.

The till is divided into 3 areas.

A SketchUp drawing of the till.

The largest compartment in the till.

The smallest and center compartment of the till.

The medium compartment of the till.

Now I’ll begin to take out the tools and figure out what to do with them. First up are the tools below. What are they?

A New (Old) Tool Chest

The opportunity to purchase a vintage chest full of tools presented itself. A big and heavy chest full of tools that had seen better days. So I bought it.

The chest has a paneled top with a working lock (and key!).

Inside are 4 tool trays, one of which has a dedicated slot in the front of the chest while the other three slide (sort of).

Each tray has plenty of hand tool goodness.

The bottom of the chest has an assortment of planes and saws and awesome screw jack/clamp.

The seller of this chest indicated his preference would be for the chest to once again find a use, and not necessarily as a coffee table. The plan is to go through the chest and figure out what should stay so the chest may once again serve its’ purpose.
