As I embark on more difficult CNC models with interlocking parts, the toughest part about transitioning a design that was meant for laser into one meant for native CNC cutting is realizing the following key facts. Each cut with a CNC weakens the board Unlike laser where there is no resistance, you have a spinning router bit going thousands of revolutions a minute, ripping and pushing through wood. When I first started cutting with my ShopBot Desktop, I’d put in [...]

Considering the first two weeks of the New Year were a write-off due to my fried laptop fan (meaning I had no computer till it was fixed), I still got quite a bit done! Overall, WoodMarvels.com grew very well in 2011. January 2012 Happenings! I was interviewed for an Indonesian laser crafting blog and Fab Lab Tulsa also added WoodMarvels.com as a resource. I released a bunch of new CNC projects, all found under Collaborations / ShopBot Tools (CNC) such [...]

With the laser end of WoodMarvels.com, for the past 3 years, I’ve been fine offering DXF and EPS file formats for machines the world over but with CNC, things are a little more complicated so I’ve added to the file formats of DXF and PartWorks zip files the new formats of Adobe Illustrator and EPS which should over all the CNC bases. You now get twice the number of files for the same price! If you already bought a CNC [...]

I sometimes have issues with people buying EPS or DXF files but the machine software they use to cut the model with doesn’t accept the format they bought. Another common issue is having a different board size than the one I’ve optimized the EPS to… to solve both problems, I’ve decided to (very slowly) start combining EPS/DXF files available on the site. Before, you had to buy both separately, the EPS had all double lines removed while the DXF had [...]

By far the largest model available at WoodMarvels.com under the ShopBot Tools Collaborations category, this huge CH-47 Chinook Helicopter CNC requires six sheets and is made-up of 49 pieces… and it’s 79cm from blade tip to blade tip! I decided to model this project to test out how the ShopBot Desktop performs over extended periods of time cutting sheet after sheet (this was in between other cutting projects) and after about 6 hours of continuous cutting and a worn-out bit… [...]

When I first got my ShopBot Desktop, I decided to focus on the simpler laser models, if there were issues, it’s easier to solve when you don’t have too many interlocking parts.
Another day, another CNC router project from WoodMarvels.com! This time, it’s a very big and strong P-38 Lightning Aircraft featuring a very sturdy build, spinning rotors and pocketed emblems on the wing. It has heft, sure, it won’t fly very far unless you [...]
