A little editor extended plugin tip

I've seen a couple of editor extended plugin buttons where the right side of the button wasn't handled correctly by the Joomla! admin css and ran into it myself today.

Looking at the css I noticed a class called "blank" for the buttons so I tested and got it to work with this:

Change:

$button->set('name', 'buttonname');

To:

$button->set('name', 'buttonname blank');

The extra "blank" after the space will give your button a nicely rounded right side.

New site for Alvaana, a two page Joomla!

Today we have finally launched the new Alvaana site. We've created about 4 different sites before launching now but each time we ended up with not enough time to finish.

With this set-up we've chosen to keep it simple and very manageable at first until we find the time or need to add extra pages. The site is a two page site, one Dutch and one English page with keywords and short paragraphs of text to explain what we do.

The contact form is given a prominent place and it only has the bare minimum amount of fields needed to get in touch.

The site is xhtml strict valid and we payed much attention to accessibility like headings that render in the correct order. The site works fine with css, images or javascript turned off.

We think it looks great and does what it needs to do.

The Million Dollar Joomla! is still in the race

Past Saturday the first live television show for the Million Dollar Wedding my niece is competing for has happened and they are going to the next round.

From the 4000 people that tried to get passed the intakes only 7 are still in the race and from that 7 at least one site is a Joomla! site. You can visit the site at sander and jessica

The site has generated over 5000 unique visitors in just a few weeks so we may have triggered some new people that never used Joomla! before.

Tim Berners-Lee Announces World Wide Web Foundation

I just found out about an interesting new initiative, 14 September 2008 The World Wide Web Foundation was launched by Tim Berners-Lee himself. Tim is the British computer scientist, who is credited with inventing the World Wide Web. You can read more about him on his wikipedia page.

The World Wide Web Foundation seeks to advance One Web that is free and open, to expand the Web's capability and robustness, and to extend the Web's benefits to all people on the planet. The Web Foundation brings together business leaders, technology innovators, academia, government, NGOs, and experts in many fields to tackle challenges that, like the Web, are global in scale.

Let's see what this initiative can do for all the web-users and still not web-users today and in the future.

Joomla! and duplicate content, what does Google think?

There is a lot of talk going on about duplicate content in Joomla! installations. Here's a good read from the Google Webmaster Central Blog about how they see and handle so called duplicate content.

Let's put this to bed once and for all, folks: There's no such thing as a "duplicate content penalty." At least, not in the way most people mean when they say that.

The Million Dollar Wedding story continues

I wrote an article for Joomla! Community Magazine this month about setting up a Joomla! site with a custom template very fast. The article was the result of a question from my niece who needed a site up very fast because she and her to be husband are in the race for a Million Dollar Wedding.

I thought I'd give a small update about the status right now for the people interested. They are the couple with the most internet votes and have reached the last 8 couples in the race for the final price.

You can find the site I did for them on Sander and Jessica from Sexbierum.

The tools I use for Joomla! development

I'm designing and programming mainly for Joomla! for many years now, being one of the founders of the project helps a lot with counting years of course :-) and in case you are interested in the tools I use and why I use them I'll list them in this post.

My specialty and passion is creating custom designs/templates for Joomla!, WordPress, Drupal or just plain html sites. For Joomla! I also write components, modules and plugins but because I'm not a guru php programmer I can do that up to a certain level of complexity.

I love creating modules and plugins that give me a special feature and what I like most about writing them myself is the fact that I'm in full control over the markup the module or plugin renders at the front-end of a site.

Is my brain turning into a real computer?

Last night I was getting the kids ready for bed and one of the pajama shirts was inside out, at least that's what I thought. While putting my hands in the sleeves to turn it back the way it should be I noticed I had made a mistake because it was just fine to begin with.

Now, here's the thing... as soon as I noticed that it was alright my head softly whispered UNDO !!

Time for a little break I think. /me shakes head.

Club templates or custom templates, what's the difference?

In Joomla! land there are a couple of ways to built your website and I'm talking about the template specifically.

Now what is a template anyway?

A template in Joomla! land is the layout or public front-end for your site, the visual presentation layer that presents data from the CMS to the user in a certain way.

Joomla!'s template system is unlike stated sometimes by people without the proper knowledge, very powerful, flexible but still simple. The amount of power lies largely in the hands of the developer working on the template.

Printer friendly Joomla! content with a print css file

One of the most forgotten or ignored "features" of a website is the print page. Many times a print page is not even considered to be part of building a web-site and in that case it is up to the designer or front-end developers mood to create printer friendly pages or not

Not is probably the most common answer because it takes time and it's simply not part of the scope of the project while in realty it should be.
