Word games are often designed to challenge your ability of language and serve an educational and entertaining purpose. That mixture of concentrated learning and creative puzzling casts a spell over many people. Based on that great demand you can find and play word games nearly everywhere. Not only on your mobile device, the internet or as a classic bard game for family evenings, but also in your daily newspaper. One famous newspaper word game is the word polygon puzzle.

Word Polygon Puzzle Definition

A word polygon is a word puzzle consisting of nine or less letters. The term polygon describes the shape in which all letters are arranged. It is a figure, especially a closed plane figure that has three or more, usually straight, sides. Most commonly used is a grid of nine squares. Another possibility is an octagon, an eight-sided figure, a septagon, a seven-sided figure or a hexagon, a six-sided figure, each with an additional letter in the center of the the figure.

Word Polygon Puzzle Rules

The aim of a word polygon puzzle is to create as many words as possible out of the given nine or less letters. Often, one of these letters is a mandatory inclusion. In most cases the letter in the center.
A word a player creates usually should not be less than 3 or 4 letters of length. Additionally, each letter may only be used once in each word. However, in most cases there is a word that can be formed out of all letters using all available letters once. Sometimes there are restrictions which words are allowed to create: no plurals ending in S, no foreign words, no words with initial capital, no hyphenated words. Each word polygon puzzle comes with a guide that allows you to judge your word polygon skills. Depending on how many words you got there are the rating categories: good, very good and excellent.

Famous publishers of word polygon puzzles are the Australian The Advertiser or The Times. The Advertiser produces a puzzle called target. Whereas The Times word polygon puzzle is called polygon. The number of letters in the puzzle varies over the course of the week from between 7 and 9 with corresponding changes to the minimum word length. Another possibility to play a word polygon puzzle is to play it online on WordCube.

In our recent Word of Word Games article Suman was asking whether Facebook’s PathWords can be downloaded or found somewhere else since it is no longer available. We did some research about this and tried to find some alternative word games for PathWords.

PathWords rules

The word game PathWords was developed as a Facebook app by Zynga, the same company that invented Words With Friends. You play it on a board that looks like honeycombs with every comb containing a letter. The aim of PathWords is to form words and score as many points as possible in this letter salad. A user can click any letter that is touching the starting letter, and cannot use the same letter twice. The player has to click as many letters as possible to build a kind of word path. After submitting a created word the word disappears and the letters collide.
This game sounds interesting and quite addictive, but unfortunately Zynga pulled PathWords from Facebook last autumn. We tried it out ourselves without success and without finding an official statement on the internet. That is why we want to give you a PathWords alternative:

PathWords alternative

Word Path iPhone app

The goal is simple: from a large, scrolling grid of randomly chosen letters remove as many words as you can find. A word’s path through the grid doesn’t have to be strictly horizontal, vertical or diagonal; it can twist, turn and cross over itself and the grid boundaries. It is availible on Apple’s App Store for a small amount of money.

Wordaholic android app

Wordaholic Word Search is a free word puzzle with a twist – you look for words in a hexagonal board. With two game modes, easy and hard, you can decide which level of difficulty you want to play. This PathWords alternative can be downloaded on the Android Market for free.

Tumble Bees online game

For someone who has no moblie device and is looking for a PathWords alternative Tumble Bee should be perfect. It is free and can be played online. Help the bees with their honey supply by spelling as many words as you can before the honeycomb fills up with letters. Each word you make will fill the honey pot with honey. Fill the pot to win the game and score tokens. Quite funny and a lot of interesting key features.

PathWords board game

For board game fans we found a PathWord alternative that is called PathWord. Strange. This game was not published by Zinga but by Thinkfun last year. The question is who bought who. Maybe this is the reason why Facebook users are not able to play PathWords anymore. However, this word game combines Tetris and Word Search but is not 100 percent similar to the original ParthWords game. You have to place the puzzle pieces onto the selected challenge so the letters under each piece spell a word. Words are read forward or backward – letters will not be scrambled. Sounds interesting.

What do you think about our PathWords alternatives?
Feel free to leave a comment if you found better alternatives or know anything about the Facebook – PathWords issue. Apart from that, enjoy finding the right path through the letter jumble.

We updated the Scrabble helper and Words With Friends Cheat.

Results order

Until now, results were either sorted by word length or points. If there were more results with the same length or value, they were mixed. We changed this behavior to a more logic approach.

At first, results are now sorted as specified by you, either by word length or points. The results with the same length or value where than sorted by the not chosen option (value or length). If length and value are equal, the results are alphabetically sorted.

Blanks without value

Blank tiles are now without value. Before, they had the value of the letter they represented. On the other hand, blank tiles still count for a double or triple word score when they are placed on such a bonus field. If a joker might be placed on different fields, the one with the higher value is being chosen.

Check Scrabble words

Like with the former word finder, it is now possible to check the results from the Scrabble helper or Words With Friends Cheat in Wikipedia and Wiktionary. You can also help us tweeting your best result right away. These options are so far only available on the desktop version of the word helpers.

We hope these changes are helping you to make words from letters for word games even more comfortable for you. You are welcome to comment on the changes below this article or contacting us directly using the feedback form.

After releasing our recent article on Word Mole many visitors asked us to extend the information on this game. This articles gathers the frequently asked questions and their answers.

Where can I play Word Mole online?

Lots of people try to find out if it is possible to play Word Mole online. Quite a number of questions regarding this issue can be found in forums on the internet. Unfortunately, they are always ending up with the same answer: Currently there is no online version of Word Mole available. This is remarkable, considering all those request. We will keep you up to date if Blackberry is developing such a service for the internet. Maybe some day they realize the market value for that game and finally bring us a Word Mole online version. I think this would be advantageous for both parties.

Is there a Word Mole version for Android?

An existing Word Mole for android seemed to be more realistic at first glance. We wanted to give Word Mole a try on our Android systems and found some pages where you could download Word Mole for Android devices. No version we bought or installed from various websites was working. There has not even been a Word Mole version within the official Android Market Place. So we are sure, there is currently no official or at least a working Word Mole version for Androids out there. When you know where to find one or currently play Word Mole on your Android device, please write us.

Where can I find the Word Mole high scores?

You can submit a score to the Leaderboard on the Word Mole game web site at the end of a single-player game. If you do not submit your score when prompted you can submit your score at a later time. Therefore you have to go on the High scores screen, in the Username field, an type a user name. Afterwards you need to type a password in the Password field and click Submit.

Are there other games like Word Mole?

Since we found out it is hard to play Word Mole on other devices than Blackberry, we tried to detect some other word games that are similar to Word Mole. Try out Bookworm and link letter tiles to build words and keep the bookworm sated and smiling. You can play it on your PC, Mac or on different mobile devices. Another Word Mole alternative is Word King. It claims to be the most addictive word game for Android. Similar to Word Mole each level has a certain number of points needed to progress, each level required more speed and skill to conquer.

How to play Word Mole?

Word Mole focuses on a little mole and his garden that is divided into 36 sections. Each section contains a letter. All letters can be used to form words and earn points. You have to try to form a word using letters directly above, below or next to each other. Therefore you will receive new letters which can be used to form new words. There is also the possibility to use words that are not directly above, below or next to each other. This leads to holes in your garden, though. To get rid of those nasty holes just try to use a letter that is beside the holes when forming another word. However, the player can choose between a single-player game and a multiplayer game. To get more information read the following instruction.

Word-grabber.com always tries to present news about word-games like Scrabble, Words With Friends or others. The other day we came across a game we never heard of called Word Mole. Word Mole is most likely familiar to BlackBerry smartphone users since it is one of the most played games for BlackBerry devices. Unfortunately, there is no Word Mole online game available. But recently the Word Mole game has been released for iPhone due to that success. Maybe a chance for word-grabber.com to learn more about this phenomenon.

Word Mole

What is Word Mole?

The word game focuses on a little mole and his garden that is divided into 36 sections.

Word Mole Single-player Game

If you need a bit of distraction during your office work or while waiting for a bus, Word Mole is the perfect game for you as a single-player game. To complete a level in a single-player game you always have to achieve a required score. There always is a timeframe in which you have to achieve that score.

Word Mole Multiplayer Game

To get in contact with other players who are as crazy for Word Mole as you are, we recommend a multiplayer game. In multiplayer games you compete against other players without pressure of time. A nice feature is the possibility to chat with your opponent while playing the game. Different to single-player games you can earn awards for certain achievements. These are for example awards for submitting the longest word or receiving the least number of holes.

Word Mole Game Scoring

There are different ways to receive points by creating words from given letters. You not only get more points for the longest words, but also for using less common letters. If you are very fast and don’t need all the given time, you receive extra points as well.

Word Mole Bonus Letters

You have a special watering can in your garden. This is to grow so-called vegetable bonus letters. Using these vegetable bonus letters in a word earns you extra points. To gain even more of these extra points, multiple vegetable bonus letters have to be used in a single word. Before you can grow vegetable bonus letters and put them into play, you have to fill them with water. Do this simply by using water bonus letters in a word. Additionally, star bonus letters gain extra points and time bonus letters gain extra time.

Word Mole on Android

We wanted to give Word Mole a try on our Android systems. There are many pages outside offering Word Mole for Android, but none of them actually worked. Also no sign of Word Mole within the official Android Market Place. We are not sure if there was a working Word Mole Android version at all or it was just a try to catch some people searching for it. If you get lucky finding a working Android version, please write us.

Word-grabber.com wishes you good luck finding words on Word Mole.

One of the most successful multiplayer online games over the past few years is Words With Friends (WWF) by Zynga With Friends. Based on Scrabble and other word games the player of Words With Friends has to ransack his brain over creating words from letters. It is available for Android phones, iPhone and on Facebook. What makes it so special is the inclusion of online friends and opponents. Thats why it is often described as the best game in history of letters.

Words With Friends - Logo

Who invented Words With Friends?

What happens if two brothers have a creative day? – Words With Friends! Probably it wasn’t that simple, but at least the fact that the brothers Dave & Paul Bettner and their crew developed this game in 2009 is correct. Dave previously worked for Microsoft on the Halo Wars and the Age of Empires games. Also Paul has been building video games for many years. It was merely a matter of time before both of them put their talents together.

Words With Friends rules

Words With Friends is similar to the famous Hasbro game called Scrabble. You can create words with altogether 104 tiles with the following scores:
1 point for E ×13, A ×9, I ×8, O ×8, T ×7, R ×6, S ×5
2 points for D ×5, N ×5, L ×4, U ×4
3 points for H ×4, G ×3, Y ×2
4 points for B ×2, C ×2, F ×2, M ×2, P ×2, W ×2
5 points for V ×2, K ×1
8 points for X ×1
10 points for J ×1, Q ×1, Z ×1
2 blank tiles with 0 points
To start you get seven tiles out of this tile pool. Now you have to think and form a word out of these letters and place it on a star in the center of the board. You opponent, who can be a Facebook friend or random partner, has to add another word horizontally or vertically so that at least one tile is shared. Then it is your turn again. Multiple words with the same play are possible. For every word you get points depending on the score of the tiles. Additionally, there is the possibility to get special points by using squares on the grid that double or triple either the value of the tile on it or your created word.
There are four buttons to make this process more bubbly. The Swap button is to get completely new tiles. The Shuffle button is to shuffle tiles on the tile line and get different letter placements. Thus you can see how to create words out of this letters. The Pass button passes the turn to your opponent. And finally the Resign button that is to admit your defeated. Otherwise the winner is the player with the highest points in the end. Up to 20 games can be played simultaneously.

ENABLE – the word list of Words With Friends

There are rules that clarify which words you are allowed to create. Words labelled as part of speech such as loanwords, colloquial words, slang, now obsolete words etc., can be used. However, proper nouns, abbreviations, prefixes and suffixes standing alone or words that require hyphens or apostrophes are forbidden. Altogether there are about 173,000 words that can be created.

Most of them derive from a word list called ENABLE. This is short for Enhanced North American Benchmark Lexicon. It is a public domain list and it is used by many word games.

Scrabble vs. Words With Friends

The most obvious difference between Words With Friends and a conventional Scrabble game is the socializing aspect. You can chat with a friend from far away while playing the game. That would be the answer of a homo sapiens internetus, a human being that always needs to have a smart phone in his hands. Another advantage of Words With Friends are the four above mentioned buttons: Pass, Shuffle, Swap and Resign which are usually manual options in a Scrabble game. Here you only need to push a button and things are getting done for you. Kidding aside, Words With Friends is really a fun game, especially online and with friends, and sometimes hard brain work!
There are also some variations in the scoring. The values of the tiles are slightly different in both games. Whenever all seven tiles on the rack are played in one turn a Words With Friends player gets 35 bonus points. In Scrabble you get 50 points.
To put it in a nutshell, Scrabble can be good for family evenings and Words With Friends is fun when you have a few minutes while waiting on a bus or you need some distraction from work.

Love for word games

Zynga claims to have up to 20 million monthly users. It’s no wonder that there is a huge amount of potential singles. Chicagoans Megan Lawless and Jasper Jasperse get to know each other through the ability of creating words out of letters. Jasperse was searching for a random opponent and was connected to Megan Lawless. They competed to construct the best words on the Words With Friends smartphone game and found love. A connection for life.
After a few games they begun to chat. Sentences become longer and maybe more personal. Finally, they decided to meet and fell in love. Now they are happily married and lifelong Words With Friends partners.

Addicted to word games

Another unbelievable story happened Alec Baldwin, 30 Rock actor, at Los Angeles International Airport on his way to New York. He never landed there but rather had to stay where he was just because of Words With Friends. He was so much in love with this game that he was willing to leave a plane for it, said Baldwin’s spokesman. The background is as follows: as usually passengers had been asked to switch off their cell phones during the takeoff. Baldwin didn’t want to be distracted while playing his game, didn’t bother and ignored all instructions. This ended up with a booting out.

Words With Friends cheat vs. Scrabble cheat

In our word game section we compare Words With Friends to Scrabble. There you can see why it is important to have a Scrabble cheat separated from a Words With Friends cheat. The first aspect is the different word pool that is used by both games. The Words With Friends cheat uses a list called ENABLE. This is short for Enhanced North American Benchmark Lexicon. Our Scrabble cheat can create words from letters from the TWL or SOWPODS list.

Moreover, there is a different scoring system as you can see in the table below:

Apart from that, using the Words With Friends cheat is similar to the Scrabble helper: Type in the letters you have to make a word from letters. You can also add a pattern, the number of blank tiles and how to sort the results. We hope you like the new Words With Friends cheat! You can use the below comment form to tell us your opinion.
