Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a treatment that uses a drug, called a photosensitizer or photosensitizing agent, and a particular type of light. When photosensitizers are exposed to a specific wavelength of light, they produce a form of oxygen that kills nearby cells.

Each photosensitizer is activated by light of a specific wavelength. This wavelength determines how far the light can travel into the body. Thus, doctors use specific photosensitizers and wavelengths of light to treat different areas of the body with PDT.

You can create rules specific to location and time. It will automatically change the phone mode to normal/silent/vibrate mode when you reach or leave that location. Simple user interface lets you create your rules without any help.

Examples:
1. You can make rules to make the phone silent as soon as you leave home.
2. Make your phone to silent+vibrate mode when you reach work location.
3. Make your phone normal when reached home

The best advantage of the app is that it DOESN’T require GPS or internet. It works using your cell tower signal!! That is, the app finds the location using the cell towers in your area, so no extra battery/power is required for GPS or internet. In addition to location, you can also specify time and days. Check out the screenshots to get a clear idea.

The disadvantages are the area covered by cell towers. If your home and work is in the same place or under same tower, this might not work for you as the app treats them as same place but you can use time and days feature to reduce the discomfort. Also, to record a new location, your device needs to be there physically, That is you could specify rules for “home” only if you are at “home”.

NOTE: If you have frequent notifications about mode change, then your location has frequent signal changes, please scan the same location again from locations screen for a couple of minutes to grab all the nearby tower signals.

Kim Dotcom, the founder of Megaupload, has set a new file-sharing site Mega, which is also a sequel of the earlier Megaupload which was closed down last January.

The site when online on Sunday and Mr Dotcom claims that it complies with the law and any effort to bring it down will be fruitless.

             “This is not some kind of finger to the US government or to Hollywood“, Kim said to the Reuters.

“Legally, there’s just nothing there that could be used to shut us down. This site is just as legitimate and has the right            to exist as Dropbox, Boxnet and other competitors.”

After the site was launched, within a few hours Kim tweeted that, it had received 250,000 user registration. The limited server capacity made it available to a few others. The site will be encrypted so the data can be accessed by the uploaders only. Cloud storage is also being made use of storing data for easy access to users.

The earlier site Megaupload was closed down due to pirated contents uploaded by many users.

The raid on Megaupload put 25 petabytes of data uploaded to it by its 50 million members into a legal limbo, BBC reports.

Since the last year there has been a serious increase in the number of Fraud Android apps over the internet and the story is just adding in more headlines over the current year. A week ago Symantec revealed that they had come across a piece of malware called Android.Exprespam, designed to collect personal data from the devices it infected. Until recently, malwares had their sources rooted in secondary devices, websites and e-mails but now after the Android market began piping hot, it found the attention of the malware developers.

Symantec write in their official blog;

In October 2012, the Tokyo Metropolitan Police arrested a group of five individuals for their involvement in developing and distributing Android malware that collected personal data, but that did not deter at least one group of scammers from doing the same as they continued to lure Android device owners to their malware. The Tokyo District Public Prosecutors Office then dismissed the case in December last year because it was unable to find enough evidence to prove that the five suspects were committing a crime. The dismissal has now led to the creation of yet another Android malware targeting Japanese Android device owners.

Earlier another Android malware called the  Android.Enesoluty, which still persists was found. Spam emails with link to a fake Google Play was forwarded which are hosted on a server located in Washington State in the United States. After the news about the fake pages started spreading, the scammers just built another one called Android Express’s Play.

Symantec has given out a list of about 9 fake apps, these apps are all the same in the way it works, i.e to steal your private data, but each of the apps are named relative to some high-demand apps, so that more victims would fall into the trap…

                                           So, you better have a thorough check on the download source.

As for the protection measures Google are using:

Bouncer : conducts automated scans on the apps uploaded to Google Play, where they are loaded into a software emulator using Google’s cloud infrastructure, the app feels as if running on an Android device, while in reality it is running inside a program that behaves like an Android device. The app is allowed to perform its function for sometime while Google watches on it, and if nothing suspicious is given a pass.

Another one  is the JellyBean 4.2’s app verification, which verifies app from any source while the device has Google Plat installed. If the verification fails, the app is considered dangerous and blocked.

While all the protections persist, the final security revolves around how careful you are, its better to keep out of anything suspicious, keep your OS updated, immediately close those app downloads which request permissions, and you may use antivirus from trusted vendors. Instead of blindly accepting all that shows up on the screen while installing or downloading, make it a habit to read it carefully, if you wish not to fall in any pit…

The table below is from the Symantec blog with the names of the apps, if any of these apps get installed, it sends or all the personal information in the device to a remote server.  The fake apps usually seeks permission to read the phone’s state etc while the legitimate ones generally wont.

Aaron H. Swarts(November 8, 1986 – January 11, 2013) was web programmer and an activist, the co-founder of Reddit, the developer of RSS and much more. The tech genius however is no-more, he committed suicide…

He was found dead at his apartment in Brooklyn; seems he hanged himself. His close-ones are in a shock and can’t still believe that he passed away. The family and partner of Swartz created a memorial Web site on which they issued a statement, saying, “He used his prodigious skills as a programmer and technologist not to enrich himself but to make the Internet and the world a fairer, better place.”

Swartz was born in Chicago, Illinois,  the son of Susan and Robert Swartz.. At the age of 14 Swartz was part of the development of the RSS 1.0 Specification. The RSS as you all know, is an immense worldwide which provide updated contents and feeds from webpages and a great gift to us bloggers. Later he attended the Stanford University but dropped out and went on to find Infogami which later merged with Reddit. the social networking news site in November 2005.  Reddit was later sold to Wired and he moved to work with it in San Fransisco but later found himself unhappy with it. In a blog post in November 2006, Swartz wrote:

“The first day I showed up here, I simply couldn’t take it. By lunch time I had literally locked myself in a bathroom stall and started crying.”

Technology activist Cory Doctorow said on his blog about Swartz when he was 14, — courtesy CNN.com

“In so many ways, he was an adult, even then, with a kind of intense, fast intellect that really made me feel like he was part and parcel of the Internet society,”.

“But Aaron was also a person who’d had problems with depression for many years,”. He added that “whatever problems Aaron was facing, killing himself didn’t solve them. Whatever problems Aaron was facing, they will go unsolved forever.”

Aaron was a tireless hacker and was a huge supporter of information freedom in the internet. He also worked for many causes such as the Creative Commons, the Internet Archive’s free public catalog of books, OpenLibrary.org, and in 2010 founded Demand Progress, a political group which stood against Internet censorship.

Swartz was part of the campaign to prevent the passing of the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) bill that sought to monitor the Internet for copyright violations and finally the bill didn’t pass.

The 26 year also have faced a lot of legal problems mostly on computer fraud and illegally obtaining documents of public interest from secure websites and publishing it openly. On 2011, he was arrested for hacking data from MIT( Massachusetts Institute of Technology). According to the indictment against him, Swartz surreptitiously attached a laptop to MIT’s computer network, which allowed him to “rapidly download an extraordinary volume of articles from JSTOR.”

Swartz’s funeral services will be held on January 15, 2013, at Central Avenue Synagogue in Highland Park, Illinois.

Snapchat is a mobile app available for Android and iPhone, that allows users to share photos and videos that can disappear after sometime

Users can send photos that can be optionally overlayed with texts and colors along with a timer where you can set the expiration between 1-10 seconds. After the set time expires the image will be self-destructed. Do you find it amazing, but some experts say otherwise…

With the self destruct feature they say that the app is a transport for sexting. Snapchat was founded by  Evan Spiegel, it was only a year ago when it was released by the Stanford student and his recently graduated business partner. The app has since then pooled in a huge user-base and is still continuing in the top lists. Facebook had even approached to acquire the app, but then they went ahead and made their own called Facebook Poke, only that Facebook couldn’t even make it to the top 100’s while Snapchat ranked 6th in the popular apps list.

The app’s main demographic is users between 13 years to 25 years of age and many parents are concerned. Most of them are pointing the apps self-destruct image feature as the main part that holds perfect for sexting.

Well don’t get too excited, the app’s self-destruction of image property doesnt guarantee you of a clean vanish of the image. Although the app notifies senders if a screenshot is taken of their send photo, founder Evan Spiegel says the app is not for privacy. Snapchat’s privacy policy says it can’t guarantee photos won’t still be available in some form after the set time has elapsed.

Snapchat was launched in September 2011 in Spiegel’s father’s living room. In May 2012, 25 images were being sent per second. As of 28 November 2012, users had shared over one billion photos on the Snapchat iOS app, with 20 million photos being shared per day. In November Evan Spiegel said Snapchat was having difficulties with delivering images in real-time because of some of the problems with scaling as the user base increased.
