Well, this is it. Fifty episodes in a little over a year’s time. Some, admittedly, better than others. Never professional, always fun. That’s what I’ll remember about doing the What We Hate Podcast. If I may pat myself on the back for a moment here, it’s extremely difficult to produce 50 original episodes of ANYTHING in any amount of time, let alone an extended podcast in roughly 14 months. It’s been a lot of fun. Thanks to the handful of you who listened, told friends, retweeted, or did anything else to help me. I’m eternally indebted to all of you.

As for everyone I didn’t thank in this space, be sure to listen to the show; your name may or may not come up. Sayin’. This little note will serve many purposes. Firstly, to announce my latest and (hopefully) greatest project, OVERHEATED. What is OVERHEATED, might you ask? Well, nothing yet. But starting soon (let’s say, shortly after the new year) it will be a resource for news, reviews, and other assorted oddities, with our primary focus being the Orlando area (and eventually, the rest of Florida). My plan is to go underground — VERY underground — and deliver fresh views on what’s happening all around The City Beautiful, but for some reason isn’t being thoroughly reported on. Essays, investigative reporting, photos, videos, podcasts, hilarity — it’s all in the cards and it’s all gonna be awesome, engaging and thought-provoking. An alternative to the alternative.

OVERHEATED will also feature quite a bit of content on the local music scene, and we’re hoping to bring you exclusives whenever we can. There’s quite a bit happening that no local press seems to know or care about enough to acknowledge; that’s where we’ll swoop in and corner it, the good and the bad.

This is where you come in. If you’re an aspiring writer living ANYWHERE in Florida (not just Orlando!) and would like to contribute to OVERHEATED, please e-mail me (bryne@punknews.org) with your ideas. Just because I’m a self-proclaimed Renaissance man doesn’t mean I know everything about everything, and I’d love to have other ‘experts’ with voices and opinions of their own on my side. You won’t be paid, but fringe benefits are likely and it’d be a decent thing to put on a resume.

As for what this means for What We Hate, well, it’ll probably go on an indefinite hiatus once OVERHEATED is up and running. It’s no secret that writing for WWH has become something of an afterthought for yours truly, and the lack of willing and able contributors hasn’t exactly helped matters, either. I’m hesitant to just kill it completely because I wouldn’t be where I am today without it, but the chances of it returning in any form beyond this year are extremely slim. I’ll probably stop at the 50th episode of the WWH Podcast (since that’s a nice, round number and everyone loves nice, round numbers) and leave the archives online forever somehow. Those worrying about the loss of the podcast need not worry, for I’ll be podcasting at OVERHEATED as well, just with a more regional flair.

I feel as far as small-time websites/blogs go, going regional is a far more effective avenue to build a voice and audience. What We Hate was never a great music blog because there were and are way too many music blogs out there doing the exact same thing we were trying to do, and the small amount of readers we had at WWH (trust me, a lot smaller than you think) reflects and confirms that. In this world of oversaturated scenes and samey opinions, going regional gives a blog a built-in audience, a decidedly different voice and a distinct advantage over other blogs trying to go ‘worldwide’ too soon. What sounds like a step backward is truly a step forward, and once it’s launched OVERHEATED will reflect that.
