Feeling insecure lately? Computer Guy Consulting has done a lot of spyware removal this year. Windows XP is not as secure as Windows 7 from my experience. Although XP is still over 50% of the operating system market it is aging rapidly and not as spyware resistant . By design, Windows 7 is harder for malware / spyware to infiltrate. All things being equal it is time to transition to Windows 7 if you want more security. As an added bonus, if you upgrade to a new pc running Windows 7 64 bit with 6 or 8 gigs of ram and a quad core processor you will be amazed how fast and powerful these new machines are! Most mainstream software will now run on Windows 7. Internet Explorer 9 and Windows 7 is a good combination for safer internet browsing.

Back Up -Be Sure

Make sure you have a back up. You should have 3 copies of important files. For example: have one file saved in my documents on the pc, have one copy on your usb thumb drive, and have an automatic back up to an internet based service. Never trust your “digital eggs” to one basket. Hard drives fail frequently. USB drives sometimes stop working properly. Your internet based service could be interrupted by outages. Three copies should be enough to keep you from losing anything.

Windows 7 -It’s Good!

Windows 7 is now overtaking all other versions of windows. It’s time to make the move. Windows 7 is far more secure and stable than XP or Vista. The 64 bit version is capable of using large amounts of RAM memory and is very fast. All of the recent spyware infections we have fixed here at Computer Guy Consulting have been on Windows XP machines. Computer repair on old XP machines is becoming less and less cost-effective. Most modern hardware and software will now work with Windows 7. If you are using anything else, the time has come to consider an upgrade or a new PC running Windows 7. Windows bug- ugh!

There is a new windows security issue. An out of cycle patch is coming on Monday August 2, 2010. This vulnerability is bad! Make sure you get this patch.

“Microsoft is investigating reports of limited, targeted attacks exploiting a vulnerability in Windows Shell, a component of Microsoft Windows. This advisory contains information about which versions of Windows are vulnerable as well as workarounds and mitigations for this issue.

The vulnerability exists because Windows incorrectly parses shortcuts in such a way that malicious code may be executed when the icon of a specially crafted shortcut is displayed. This vulnerability can be exploited locally through a malicious USB drive, or remotely via network shares and WebDAV. An exploit can also be included in specific document types that support embedded shortcuts.”
