Productivity App Series: Dropbox

Finding it hard to keep up with the ever-growing number of free productivity apps? To keep you in the know, New@Norris will feature a series of posts highlighting a variety of tools that will enhance your scholarly life.

Thumb drives are great for saving work-in-progress and making those files portable and available on any computer that may be at hand. But, have you ever carefully saved that precious file, only to find that you left the thumb drive behind in your home or office computer? Enter Dropbox, the cloud’s file-storage tool for Windows , Mac , Linux, iPad, iPhone, Android, and BlackBerry.

Any file you save to Dropbox also saves to your computers, phones and the Dropbox website. Keep documents private or send a link to share collaborative projects or photo albums in your public folder. 2GB of space is free and up to 100GB is available by subscription. Give Dropbox a try and you’ll discover that the cloud isn’t just a bunch of fluff!

Mobile App Show and Tell Planned for Noon, May 29

It’s easy to buy a smart phone or tablet, but harder to figure out which apps to install. Which are the best for taking notes, commenting on PDF files, or other academic needs? Which of the clinical information apps are the most user-friendly and reliable? Present your favorite apps and watch other’s presentations about their favorite apps at the Norris Library’s Mobile App Show and Tell on Tuesday, May 29^th noon-1 PM in the East Conference Room.

We’ll provide pizza, projectors, iPad connector, and prizes for the presenters who show the audience’s favorite apps. Bring your device—loaded with your favorite academic and clinical apps—and sign up to present when you arrive.

PubMed Limits Function Modified

PubMed has changed the way users narrow search results by replacing the Limits page with a results filter sidebar. While it looks slightly different, the filter sidebar options work the same way as they did on the limit selection page.

Click a filter to narrow your search results; a “Filters activated” message will display on the result page.
Only valid filter options for a result set will display on the sidebar. Once a filter is selected, it will stay activated for subsequent searches until the selection is cleared. To turn off filters, click either the “Clear all” link to remove all the filters, the “clear” link next to a filter category to clear the selections within that category, or the individual filter.

To add additional filter categories to the sidebar, click the “Choose additional filters” link, select the additional categories, and then click “Apply”. To add filters to the sidebar for categories with many selections, click the category “more …” link, select the additional filters and then click “Apply”.

USMLE Licensing Changes

Updates to some of Norris Library’s electronic USMLE study materials will no longer be available, due to changes in institutional licensing. Try the USMLE Easy test banks if you’re studying for USMLE Step 1, Step 2 CK, or Step 3.

These contain thousands of online questions covering all the disciplines and organ systems covered on the exams and have customization features that allow users to focus on the topics still to be mastered and skip over those not needing review. Also check HELIX, the Health Sciences Libraries catalog, for an extensive collection of study aids available in print.

Norris Library Subject Guides Assist Users

Librarians at Norris Library have created subject guides to help users find databases, ebooks and websites relevant to their field of study or clinical practice. Choose from the CLINICIANS, STUDENTS, RESEARCHERS OR SUBJECT links to jump to the guides from the library home page. Be sure to check out the Mobile Device guide to learn about apps and mobile-friendly websites. Some are paid for by the USC Libraries and others are freely available to all.

Did you know that the Health Sciences Libraries have a mobile app? Download the USC HSL app from your mobile device’s App Store or Play Store. Using this app, you can reserve group study rooms in the Norris Library, renew and request books and access other library services.

PubMed Adds New Citation Management Features

PubMed’s My NCBI account users have two new options for saving citations. Now you can download citations as a text file that can be imported into EndNote, Refworks or other citation manager software. To use this feature, begin by clicking on the “Send to” link, choose “Citation manager” as the destination and click “Create File”. (See below.) The resulting file is formatted for importing into your citation manager software.

The PubMed “Abstract” display now includes a “Favorite” button, giving users an easy way to save citations to a new NCBI collection or add them to an existing collection. To use this feature, click on the article title to make the button visible and then click on the “Favorite” button. You will be prompted to sign into My NCBI (if you aren’t already) and given the option to create a new collection or add the citation to a list of your previously-created collections. (See below.)
