I’m currently sitting in the lounge area of the Berlin International Youth Hostel, I’m waiting for my room to be available at 1:00 PM, and so instead of hitting the city, I’ll take the time to catch up on blog entries.

Day 5th of the Big Blog Exchange was spent on a day trip to Schloss Hohenschwangau and Schloss Neuschwanstein – a dream of mine since the start of time was to visit a castle, which I can finally cross off the list of things to do before I die. It was a long trip going south of Bavaria, about 2 and a half hours, but 3 if it’s your first time traveling in the area and you still tend to get kind of lost. Thankfully, there are A LOT of tourists going to the area, and so it was mostly “Follow where the tourists are going” for me, if ever I was unsure. The ticket center to the two castles was extremely long, so thankfully I booked my tickets in advance and didn’t have to line up with everyone else. I don’t understand why majority of these tourists don’t book in advance, but I guess that’s okay. That means I will always be first in line to enter places because I’m one of the few people who actually book in advance

So, before everything else, here’s a quick introduction on Hohenschwangau/Neuschwanstein by our popular (but not so reliable 100% of the time) website Wikipedia:

• Schloss Hohenschwangau (High Swan County Palace) is a 19th-century palace in southern Germany. It was the childhood residence of King Ludwig II of Bavaria and was built by his father, King Maximilian II of Bavaria. It is located in the German village ofHohenschwangau near the town of Füssen, part of the county of Ostallgäu in southwestern Bavaria, Germany, very close to the border with Austria.
• Hohenschwangau was the official summer and hunting residence of Maximilian, his wife Marie of Prussia, and their two sons Ludwig (the later KingLudwig II of Bavaria) and Otto (the later King Otto I of Bavaria). The young princes spent many years of their adolescence here. The King and the Queen lived in the main building, and the boys in the annex.

• Schloss Neuschwanstein is a 19th-century Romanesque Revivalpalace on a rugged hill above the village of Hohenschwangau near Füssen in southwest Bavaria, Germany. The palace was commissioned by Ludwig II of Bavaria as a retreat and as an homage to Richard Wagner. Ludwig paid for the palace out of his personal fortune and by means of extensive borrowing, not with Bavarian public funds. (He was broke but at least he wasn’t corrupt! Go, King Ludwig II!)
• The palace was intended as a personal refuge for the reclusive king, but it was opened to the paying public immediately after his death in 1886. Since then over 60 million people have visited Neuschwanstein Castle. More than 1.3 million people visit annually, with up to 6,000 per day in the summer.
•  The palace has appeared prominently in several movies and was the inspiration for Disneyland’s Sleeping Beauty’s Castle and later, similar structures.

The castle was absolutely gorgeous from the outside, and even more inside. It sits on a mountain and you can see it from below, and it just looks so magnificent, surreal. They say King Ludwig was koo-koo crazy for building Neuschwanstein to the point of becoming so broke and in debt, but I believe he was an eccentric man, who had appreciation for the arts and had great taste in aesthetic, design and architecture. I’d say he made it to the my list of favorite European monarchs. If it wasn’t for him, Bavaria wouldn’t be what it is today, he helped in shaping the culture.

Lake Alpsee behind me, another absolutely gorgeous sight! This one is below Hohenschwangau, with crystal clear blue water. If it were a very hot summer day, this would be a perfect lake to swim in (although I doubt that’s even legal in Bavaria)

After my tour of Neuschwanstein, I stopped by the cafe inside the castle for a quick snack. I had forgotten to eat lunch or bring a snack so all I had for the day was a bowl of cereal. I ordered a salami pizza, which would’ve been okay had they heated it up properly (not burning half of the pizza) and serving it on a new warm plate instead of the ice cold one it came in from the refrigerator! Halfway through my pizza, the other half was as hard as a rock. I was practically banging the pizza on the table and the American guy a few tables away from me had a smirk on his face. I decided to quit fighting the pizza and just bite off parts that were actually edible. For a total of about 7 Euros (small pizza + drink), it was definitely a rip off.

My tour of Hohenschwangau and Neuschwanstein required  A LOT  of walking, both uphill and downhill. To say the least, my feet were killing me, especially on the way down Neuschwanstein. I think I might’ve took the longer route down hill… To say the least, midway descending the mountain, I started thinking silly things like if it was possible to roll down the hill and walk away unscathed… And every tourist I saw walking uphill on the other side of the road, I wanted to grab and say, “NO! DON’T TAKE THIS ROUTE! IT IS NEVER ENDING! SAVE YOUR FEET WHILE YOU CAN!!!” but with the language barrier and everything, I decided not to. Also, who knows, maybe they’re the kind of people who like to walk uphill for 30 minutes… Weird people are like that.

So a few tips for visiting Hohenschwangau/Neuschwanstein:

1. DO IT. Obviously. Just do it. You will not regret it at all.
2. Book your tickets online days before your intended date of touring.
3. Wear great walking shoes, unlike me. I don’t own a pair of great walking shoes. Or at least invest in great insoles, which will save you a lot of pain.
4. Dont eat in the cafe/bistro of Neuschwanstein… Bring your own food or eat a lot before touring. There are restaurants below the mountain where you get tickets/etc. if you suddenly get hungry.
5. Follow rules, no taking photos inside the castle and listen to your tour guide, if you have questions – ask. Learning about historical places/people is learning about the world and broadening your knowledge.

So, that was my 5th day. I’ve fallen so in love with Bavaria, I think it’s currently my favorite place — But I’ll give Berlin a chance to change my mind. :p

Day four of my BBE journey was spent exploring more of Munich’s city, I woke up on Tuesday morning to a cold 13C weather, with some wind! I wasn’t prepared for weather that cold, so I had (rather stupidly) left my sweater back in Frankfurt in my luggage. I didn’t expect Munich to get colder than around 16C (again, rather stupid)… And so I left the hostel quite early and headed back to Marienplatz where I know clothing stores are located. I went on a wee bit of a shopping spree at H&M because they were on sale. They had two H&M’s on one street, just a few meters away from each other (Weird, but cool!)… I got myself a sweater with the letter C in front (“C” for Camie! Yay!), some new shoes (my plimsolls are starting to feel terrible on my feet from all the walking) and a scarf to keep me warmer.

Afterwards, I walked around a bit more having a look around, ended up in a deli shop where they also sold sandwiches on the go. I ordered myself a Leberkase sandwich, with some yummy mustard and ketchup.

I ate it outside the shop while I watched different kinds of people come by, my observation are as follows: You’ve got your business people who are in a rush, girls who dress down like it’s 20 degrees out, moms with their babies on strollers, foreigners who are actually locals, cute German guys, old men sporting traditional Bavarian hats, people who bike more than walk, and the rare occasion of a punk/gothic guy/girl.

I then decided to visit another part of the city, which was a train station away, where the University was located. Tina had told me that her favorite ice cream place in Munich was located near the University, the place is called Balla Beni. I found it easily with the help of Google Maps, but took my time walking to the place and just looking around the quiet neighborhood. I really liked the area because there were no tourists around, so it was quiet and the locals went about their business. I ordered a scoop of ice cream, had a seat outside the small shop, eating ice cream despite the cold. I thought it was an odd combination, freezing weather and a frozen treat, but suddenly the locals did the exact same thing I was doing, eating ice cream at Balla Beni.

At around 4 PM, I met up with Anne, a PR Manager for the Bavarian HI Youth Hostels, for some coffee and a chat. She picked a nice cafe in Marienplatz where we hoped we’d be able to warm up from the cold weather outside. We ordered some coffee, and she ordered a dish called Kaiserschmarrn – Bavaria’s national dish! It’s quite tasty, and if I were to describe it, it’s somewhat like a thicker version of crepe (but nothing like pancakes/hotcakes), it has some yummy raisin bits and some apple sauce/dip. One plate was enough for one person,  but Anne and I couldn’t even finish half together! It was a very yummy but heavy dish.

Anne and I talked about Bavaria, the differences of Berlin and Munich, and her wanting to visit the Philippine! I recommended her to visit the beautiful islands of our country, as it is truly our greatest asset in the Philippines. After our little get together at the cafe, she walked me over to Viktualienmarkt, which is an area where they have a market selling flowers and different kinds of German food, chocolates, fruits. She had to leave, and so I set out on my own to do more exploring.

I ended up in a small building where they had food stalls and somewhat like a mini grocery inside, where the food is much more expensive than the ones found in the outside market. I walked through the place until I ended up on a set of stairs that had purple cow footprints leading to place below. I followed the purple hooves, and there it was… a HUGE Milka store!

Everything in it was a dark lilac color, which is the color of Milka. They had all kinds of chocolates, and I didn’t know where to start or what to buy. The cashier lady told me it was the only Milka store in the whole of Germany – So, that settled it. I had to buy a few chocolates but not too much that it will make my bag too heavy for travel. I’m not a big chocolate person, so I bought enough for my family to try.

After a long day of exploring, I retired back to the hostel to relax and prepare for another day exploring Bavaria’s most famous sights: Schloss Hohenschwangau and Schloss Neuschwanstein!

I’ve been quite the busy bee, I didn’t actually think it would be hard finding time to actually edit photos and blog about my day in between all the touring, exploring, and sleeping off the jet lag! But I think I’ve found the perfect time to post entries, which would be in the wee hours of the morning before breakfast because I’m awake as early as 5:30 AM due to my body clock still being in Philippine time.

Day 3 of my Big Blog Exchange adventure consisted of touring one of the most historical places in Germany, which was the Dachau Concentration Camp. I set off to to Dachau pretty early, I was using the DB Navigator app to know which trains to take… I swear, that app is a godsent! It basically has all the information on the German railways. All you have to do is enter your location and where you want to go and what day and time you’d like to leave… It will search for at least 5 different ways to get there in a certain time frame. I don’t think I would survive traveling across Germany without this app, so I definitely recommend it if you’re visiting Germany!

On the way to Dachau, I met three American girls who were in Germany for an internship, they get to tour around on weekends. We met at the U-Bahn because they recognized me from the hostel, they then invited me to join them, which of course I agreed to.

Visiting Dachau and learning more about the first Concentration Camp was definitely one for the books. I learned that KZ Dachau was basically like the father of all the concentration camps in Germany during the Third Reich and World War II. It’s where all the Nazi soldiers received their training for all things Nazism. The most striking thing I’ve seen in the camp was definitely the main gate entrance and the words “Arbeit Macht Frei”, which literally means “Freedom through work”, and well that’s self-explanatory… I don’t think I’d have to elaborate on why it’s the most striking to me.

After a long tour of Dachau, I headed back to the city center and decided to stop by Marienplatz, maybe check out some German food to try out as I was starving and haven’t had any food the whole day. I was taking the U-bahn, so obviously I don’t see much of the city… With being underground and all. LOL So as I was ascending the escalator, I wasn’t really expecting much… As soon as I turned around, I was literally mesmerized by the beauty of the New Town Hall, food suddenly was the last thing on my mind.

I guess it’s safe to say I stared at it for a few good minutes… Like ten minutes. I then made my way through the doors of the clock tower and was greeted by an equally gorgeous courtyard, where people were drinking beer, eating and having good conversations (I would imagine they were good conversations, since I don’t understand a slick of German).

I took a seat under one of the umbrellas, the sky started to grow gloomy and the rumbling of thunder started within a few minutes, I then browsed through the menu and picked the most familiar dish on Ratskellers menu – Veal Schnitzel.

You squeeze some lemon juice on it, and eat it with the cranberry dip and fries… I was thinking, “Hm, might be weird eating Veal with some lemon and cranberries… *takes a bite* OMG THIS IS HEAVEN I NEED TO TELL MY BOYFRIEND” … And I freaked out about the dish for a few good minutes.

After my yummy meal, I started to grow tired and decided to head back to the hostel for some much needed rest and sleep… I dreamt of eating more Schnitzel that night. It was a very very good dream.

Hallo! I have finally gotten the time to create a blog entry amidst the traveling, staring at great architecture, avoiding the rain, and fighting jet lag! It’s currently 6:45 AM and breakfast begins in 15 minutes, but this morning, a blog update on what’s happening with me is my main priority.

After 18 hours of travel to get to Frankfurt, I arrived at the airport having been greeted by Ulrike and Thomas of DJH (Deutches Jugendherbergswerk), they had a sign and all and welcomed me to their country with happy smiles on their face.

We then took the bus and walked to the hostel,  I was relived to have finally arrived so I could get rid of all my heavy luggage. They showed me to my room to get me settled in, I got out of my airplane clothes and wore my DIY BBE shirt, then they showed me around the hostel, took some photos for the press…

I quite liked my room, they booked me on private ones for the rest of the trip, which is nice. I get to rest and have some peace and quiet.  The bed and pillow was the highlight of the room, I believe!

Ulrike, Thomas and I walked around a bit getting to the U-bahn to get to the Hauptbahnhof (main station in German) so I could get a German rail pass. I quickly took photos as we walked around, I wasn’t able to explore this part of the city but I plan to do so once I go back here on the day before my flight back to Manila. Once we got to the Hauptbahnhof, there was a long queue at the ticket center, which was about 50 people! But thankfully, Thomas had some “VIP” card that granted him to get ahead of the line and purchase my German Railpass. We then headed off to T-Mobile so I can get a German sim card with 200mb data, DJH paid for my sim card as well as their welcome gift to me… I was worried that I’d use up the 200mb a day instantly but so far T-Mobile has proven to be the best network I’ve used, not only does it have fast 3G connections, it works well for a limit of only 200mb! I’d recommend it to anyone visiting Europe! After setting me up with a sim card so I can stay connected with family, friends and social networks, Thomas and I said goodbye to each other and off I went back to my hostel for some dinner. By the time I finished with dinner, I was so tired, I had no choice but to retreat back to my room, have some Apfelwein which was complimentary from the hostel, and then I went to bed.

The next day, I packed my bags, had a wonderful breakfast out in the courtyard (hoarded some Nutella as a snack for my trip) and off I went to find my way to Munich! I was honestly really scared at first, the night before I left for Frankfurt, I was sitting on my bed stressing out and almost wanting to break down and cry. After a long flight, meeting with Ulrike and Thomas and talking to me about Germany and showing me around, I started to feel extremely overwhelmed at the thought that I will be doing all this on my own, traveling and finding my way to each city safely. I’ve never done anything like this, so to suddenly be 7,000 miles away from home was something I was scared of.  I took deep breathes and reassured myself  that I wouldn’t be in this situation if I couldn’t handle it myself. I slept it off and the next day, I was back to feeling like me again… confident and adventurous!

I took the bus outside the Frankfurt youth hostel and it brought me right to the Hauptbahnhof. Thomas told me that a train to Munich leaves every hour, and exactly when I got there, the next train was to leave in 3 minutes! I ran to platform 6 where the ICE train to Munich was located and took a seat by the window, in front of an old lady who read the newspaper all throughout the 2 hour train ride to her destination. I spent my time on the train writing in my travel journal, doing some accounting and just looking at the German countryside… I forgot to bring a snack on the train with me so as soon as I arrived at the Munich Hbf, I went to the nearest food stall and got myself some Currywurst! I absolutely loved it, but apparently I have to try it again in Berlin because it’s Berlin’s specialty. I then tried to navigate my way to my hostel in Munich, HI Munich Park at Miesingstr 4 (I would type it correctly but I don’t have special characters on my board to spell it correctly, so excuse me for that!)… With the help of a non-english speaking man at the DB office, I made my way hoping I was actually going the right direction. I also relied a lot on Google Maps and an app called FahrInfo (which is so useful! You input your destination and it tells you which subway trains/trams/buses to take to actually get there!!! I swear it is Godsent!)

True enough, I made it to the hostel!!! I even met two Canadian girls (who I think were a couple because I heard one of them say “babe” to the other) because they thought I was a local and needed directions. I told them I was headed to the hostel as well and knew the way thanks to Google Maps and they followed me as Google Maps led the way! I really love the hostel I’m staying at here at Munich, it has a bistro for when you’re hungry, a lounge where you can sit and use your laptops, the courtyard (which I’m sure I won’t be able to use because it’s too cold and always raining) and my private room with a bunk bed. It’s a very fun hostel, and their food for breakfast is great as well!

A few things I learned in my two days so far:

1. Not all Germans sound angry when they speak – Almost everyone I know back home thinks Germans sound angry when they talk… It’s not true, I shall debunk that myth now. I’ve only heard one angry sounding German so far and that was a few minutes ago, but I think the hostel guest was complaining about something…
2. When using escalators, stay to the right, the left lane is for people in a hurry – Thomas had to pull me to the right twice while we were on escalators. Oops! I know better now, though!
3. Adults and elderly are quite friendly, they often greet you with Guten Morgen or a smile on their face when you make eye contact. Filipinos are NEVER like that, despite us being friendly people…
4. They are trusting of their citizens to not take U-bahn, S-bahn, trams and busses for free… You always should have a ticket but they don’t always check if you do either… Which to me is a bit funny, but I guess it’s because I come from a country where people would take advantage of that trust the government gives.
5. Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone, if you’re lost then you ask, if you want something, say something. If you don’t speak up, then you’ll get nowhere!
6. The German countryside makes use of solar energy for electricity. Apparently it’s a big thing now and people really invest in it, and I really admire that! It’s so earth friendly and great for the economy. I wish the Philippines gave importance to something like this as well.
7. The German railways is a big big network, intimidating at first, but it’s efficient and the best way to get around this big city. It is also worth every Euro you pay for! I can’t be more happy with it. I used to get intimidated with it, but I love it now. It’s always on time and hardly any delays… Very efficient!

Well, that’s it for now! Yesterday I went to Dachau Concentration Camp, but I will post about that as soon as I can.

I’m off to have breakfast and explore the city some more!

A few facts about me?
1. I love to dye my hair different colors, in the past month I’ve had silver, light blue, mint green, pastel lavender, and my current hair color: Old Rose
2. If I eat too much salty food, I crave for sweets right after.
3. I love how antique/vintage shops feel, there’s just so much history in one place.
4. I believe in the kindness of strangers, and the good in every single person.
5. My favorite era in architecture would have to be Baroque and Rococo, and recently have fallen in love with Art Deco and the 20′s!

Where have I been before?
I’ve been to neighbouring countries of the Philippines: Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia and hopefully would go to Bangkok at the end of the year as well!

My fave food?
My ultimate favorite cuisine would have to be Japanese, because I never tire of it… But I’m a foodie at heart and so my food tastes are quite versatile!

My passion?
I think I’m expected to say Fashion because that’s my major in college… But I’d have to say it is definitely Blogging. I’ve been continually doing it for 10 years. If that isn’t passion, then I don’t know what is!

What are I’m excited about during the BBE?
What made me join BBE was definitely their concept. I’m such a believer in the written word as a way of opening the eyes of others, especially through blogging. Also, I’m excited about actually going out there and experiencing a culture completely different from my own, all the while learning that hey, we’re not so different despite our different cultures! I’ve never traveled on my own before, so this would definitely be a first… And to have it in such a big country is quite scary! But I’ve got some support, so that’s a little relieving. I have to admit, this trip for me is so much more than just opening the eyes of others, but it’s also opening my own eyes as to the world out there.

How I picture Germany and the Germans?
I will admit, I first knew about Germany when I was learning about World War II in school… And so whenever Germany was mentioned, the first that would come to mind was the Nazi history and the strong people. Over the years, as I grew older, I learned a little more along the way. I found Germany to be a country of great and rich culture, the land of the best tasting beer, and Germans to be “scary” people but actually really aren’t! I think it might just be the language and the way it is spoken that gives people the wrong impression And I can’t wait to learn more, there’s definitely a difference from learning from what you read and learning from experience!

Es wird Zeit die Heizungen auszustellen, die Gummistiefel & Regenjacke an den Haken zu hängen, die eingemottete Sonnenliege wieder rauszuholen – diese Woche kehrt der Sommer mit dem Hoch “Sabine” zurück. Meint auf alle Fälle die Wettervorhersage. Glauben wir das doch einfach.

Und nachdem Spargel & Erdbeeren abgesoffen sind, muss halt Eis herhalten. Schon seit längerer Zeit ist mir der Trend zum klassischen Eis am Stiel oder auf englisch Ice Pops aufgefallen. Und beinahe hätte ich eine dieser Eisformen aus New York im Handgepäck mitgeschleppt – mich dann aber doch für die klassische Online Bestellung entschieden. Ich sag nur Übergepäck

(Metro Kochherausforderung: Spinatsalat mit Mangodressing & Käsecracker, Pesto Pulled Chicken Burger mit Ofenfries und Rhabarberketchup, Mango-Erdbeer Paletas)

Als dann die Einladung zur Metro Kochherausforderung erfolgte, und ich mit Schreck Brause im Paket entdeckte war schnell klar – das wird meine Eis am Stiel Premiere. Die Brause ging aber irgendwie unter. Ob es an der super reifen Flugmango lag? Die an Geschmack nicht zu überbieten war? Oder den ersten deutschen Erdbeeren? Keine Ahnung, aber ganz ehrlich – ich glaube diesen Sommer wird die Eismaschine eingemottet und es gibt nur noch Eis am Stiel.

Mango Erdbeer Paletas mit Brause
nach Elisabeth Johansson “Eis”

Zutaten:
300 ml Wasser
40 g Zucker
2 El Kastanienhonig
250 g Erdbeeren
1/2 Mango
2 El Zitronensaft
2 Tüten Brausepulver – Geschmacksrichtung Zitrone

Zubereitung:
1. Wasser mit Zucker und Honig in einem kleinen Topf aufkochen lassen, und so lange köcheln lassen bis der Zucker und Honig sich vollständig aufgelöst haben. Auf zwei Schüssel verteilen und abkühlen lassen.

2. Mango schälen, das Fruchtfleich entlang des Kerns entfernen. Gemeinsam mit 1 EL Zitronensaft fein pürieren. Die Masse zu dem Zuckerwasser in einer der beiden Schüsseln geben, gut verrühren und in die Eis am Stiel Formen einfüllen. Für 20 Minuten einfrieren, bis die Masse dickflüssig ist.

3. In der Zwischenzeit die Erdbeeren waschen, das grüne entfernen und halbieren. Mit 1 EL Zitronensaft pürieren und in die zweite Schüssel füllen und gut verrühren.

4. Die Ice Pop Form aus dem Tiefkühler nehmen, das Brausepulver auf die 12 Formen verteilen und dann die Erdbeermasse einfüllen. Für ca. eine Stunde einfieren, dann die Eisstiele einsetzten und über Nacht gefrieren lassen.

Tipp: Zum Auslösen die Formen kurz unter lauwarmes Wasser halten.

Vor ein Wochen bin ich beim stöbern im Google Reader (ja, immer noch nicht umgestellt – ihr schon?) bei Katharina auf “The Hive” gestossen. Euroäische Bloggerkonferenz in Berlin.

Man kennt es von Anwälten, Ärzten und co. – bei denen geht es immer auf diverse Konferenzen zur Weiterbildung, warum also nicht als Blogger? Immerhin alles bei mir im DIY Style, und neuer Input kann bekanntlich nie schaden, und dann noch in Berlin! Das neue London.

Ein Blick auf die letztjährige versprach viel, sogar trending auf Twitter war Hive damals, die gefunden Berichte klangen alle vielversprechend.

Nach zwei Tagen war aber schnell klar- entweder sind meine Ansprüche zu hoch, oder ich falle schon in die Kategorie “Advance” oder bin ich doch einfach zu deutsch?

Aber zu erst das positive! Es liegt ein riesen Stapel an Visitenkarten neben mir, endlich die Köpfe hinter dem Blog zu erkennen (danke twitter – zukünftig gibts die “Rose”), viele neue aus der Food & anderen Nichen. Merci ihr lieben für die tollen Tage, Gespräche, Ideen, Anregungen!

Ein toller Workshop vom Blogger & Profi & I_am_Germany Curator Georg zum Thema SEO (wem es nix sagt, mir vor Sonntag auch nix), bei dem die Leidenschaft erkennbar war. Zwei spannende Workshops zum Thema Google Analytics (von Patrick von Google) sowie zum Thema Zeitmanagement von Luisa.

Tja, und da hörte es für mich auch schon auf. Entweder war es an der Zielgruppe vorbei (die weiteren “Nicht-Blogger-Speaker), oder eine weitgehende Selfpromotion, mit der “Ach schaut mal wie toll ich bin”, aber die Infos dazu sage ich nicht Mentalität. Gut, man muss hier allerdings beachten, dass die Speaker auf eigene Kosten angereist sind und auch nur den Eintritt gesponsert bekommen habe. Würdet ihr da viel Zeit investieren? Ich auch nicht!

Und dann das drum herum, spielt für mich eine grosse Rolle. Besonders wenn auch Networking eine wichtige Rolle auf der Konferenz spielen soll. Dazu gehört immer Essen, bei einer 95% Frauenquote noch wichtiger. Da ich beide Lunchs dank leeren Schüsseln auslassen musste, kann ich zur Qualität nichts sagen. Aber zuckersüsse, wenige, Cupcakes liessen auf nicht viel positives schliessen. Dazu ein bezahltes Abendessen mit rohen Burgern, nein Danke!

Schlechte Organisation, zu viele Blogger, keine Chance zwischen den Vorträgen sich durch die Stühlreihen zu kämpfen, drei Stockwerke hoch- oder runter, und das im Anschluss erneut, nur in einem Raum ein Mikrofon, und nur ab und zu eine offizielle Vorstellung.

Als Fazit nehme ich für mich mit, dass weniger manchmal mehr ist, und ein Label “Beginners” oder “Advantage” eindeutig Sinn macht!

Wie heisst es so schon “Ist das Glas halb leer” oder “Ist das Glas halb voll” – immer nur eine Sache der Einstellung. So ist es auch mit dem Wetter, ach das aktuelle Lieblingsthema der deutschen. Ist es etwa schon das Mai-Sommerloch-Thema? Wir sind eins – wir jammern alle über Regen, Kälte & co.

Aber ein Blick auf meinen Balkon zeigte, den letzte Woche gepflanzten Kräutern geht es blendend, der Salat wuchert fast schon & unter den Radiesschen ist ein Kampf um den besten Platz ausgebrochen. Und im Freibad ist das Wasser endlich mal so richtig warm

Nachdem zum Muttertagsmenü der Nachtisch schon verbloggt wurde, macht es jetzt irgendwie Sinn zur Vorspeise zu springen. Bei der Planung war schnell klar, es sollte gut vorzubereiten sein, und am besten Spargel enthalten. Auf die Klassiker Spargelsuppe hatte ich wenig Lust, Wettertechnisch hätte was heisses deutlich besser gepasst.

Bei Twitter hat mich Nathalie auf die Gemüseterrine von Robert gebracht, und wenn zwei meiner “Lieblingsblogger” so schwärmen, konnte ich nicht widerstehen und bestellte kurzerhand noch schnell eine Terrinenform. Den ganz ehrlich, das war eine absolute Premiere für mich!

Bis auf den kurzen Schreck, wie zum T…. ich den bitte ein Wasserbad mit 3/4 Höhe der Terrinenform hinbekommen sollte (eine gute Auswahl an Kastenformen ist praktisch), war die Zubereitung ein Kinderspiel und Geschmacklich überzeugte sie voll und ganz.

Als Schwäbin habe ich noch kurz die Reste vom Ziegenfrischkäse mit untergejubelt – gibts bald wieder! Den auch am nächsten Tag als Bürolunch zog sie noch den “neid” der Kollegen auf sich.

Spargelterrine
nach lamiacucina, für 8 Portionen

Zutaten:
1 großer Lauch
3 Paprika, rot
400 g Spargel, grün
Salz, Zucker
200 ml Sahne
100 ml Milch, mind. 3,5%
100 g Ziegenfrischkäse
3 Eier
schwarzen Pfeffer, Meersalz, Muskatnuss

Dip:
100 g Quark
100 g Joghurt
1 Bund Schnittlauch, gewaschen und in feine Röllchen geschnitten
Meersalz, weisser Pfeffer

Zubereitung:

1. Terrinenform (1 Liter) mit Küchenfolie auslegen. Backofen auf 180°C Ober/Unterhitze vorheizen. Den grünen Spargel waschen, holzige Enden abschneiden, mit Meersalz und etwas Zucker in Alufolie einpacken und für ca. 20 Min. im Ofen bissfest garen. Auskühlen lassen. In der Zwischenzeit die Paprika waschen & trockentopfen, auf ein mit Backpapier belegtes Blech legen und anschließend auf 180°C so lange rösten, bis die Haut sich dunkel färbt. Haut abziehen, Kerngehäuse entfernen. Zur Seite stellen.

2. Salzwasser in einem grossen Topf zum sieden bringen. Den oberen grünen Teil des Lauchs in 25 cm lange Stücke schneiden und im Wasser für ca. 3 Minuten blanchieren, sofort in kalten Wasser abschrecken. Bei dickere Blätter die Schichten in zwei teilen. Blätter auf Küchenpapier auslegen und trocknen und anschließend die Terrine quer zur Länge mit den geteilten Lauchblättern belegen.

3. Für die Royale Eier mit der Sahne, Milch und Ziegenfrischkäse gut verrühren, mit gemahlenem Pfeffer, Meersalz und geriebener Muskatnuss kräftig würzen. Etwas Royale in die Form geben und die Form schwenken, so daß alles leicht bezogen ist. Die Terrine mit den Spargelstangen schön auslegen und dann mit der Royale begießen. Mehrmals kräftig die Form auf den Tisch schlagen, daß alle “Luftlöcher gestopft” sind.

4. Als Abschluss (=Deckel) die Paprikastücke passend zuschneiden und auslegen. Lauchblätter umschlagen und zuletzt die Folie umschlagen. Die Terrinenform im Wasserbad auf 3/4 Höhe (Tipp: Kastenform) für ca. 1 Stunde garen — die Wassertemperatur sollte hierbei mind. 90 bis 95° Grad haben. Anschliessend Herausnehmen, auskühlen lassen und über Nacht kalt stellen.

5. Für den Dip alle Zutaten verrühren würzen und abschmecken. Terrine aufschneiden, mit Blattsalat und Dip servieren.

Ein kurzer beruflicher Abstecher in die schöne Stadt am Rhein reichte immerhin noch für einen abendlichen Bummel durch die Alt- und Neustadt, und entlang des Rheines aus.

Fette Kuh
Vielleicht ist es dem ein oder anderen schon aufgefallen, wenn es mich nach London oder in die USA zieht stehen sie meist auf der Speisekarte – Burger. Knuspriges Brötchen, medium gebratenes Fleisch, gerne in klassisch oder ausgefallen Kombi. Warum? In Deutschland findet man so gut wie kaum diese Burgerläden, die erstklassiges Fleisch mit einem guten Burger verbinden und nix weiters als Burger im Angebot haben. In Köln hat sich dies seit ein paar Jahren geändert, seit die “Fette Kuh” die Neustadt eroberte.

Ein kleiner Laden, mit wenig Sitzplätzen, der Burgergeruch setzt sich schon bei einem halbstündigen Besuch in den Kleidern ab (im Sommer unbedingt ein Plätzchen im freien suchen), einer überschaubaren Speisekarten und einem Burger der Woche. Pesto-Brie war es Mitte April.

Urteil: Eine interessante Kombi, die leider nicht so ganz durchgekommen ist. Dazu war das Fleisch leicht kalt, obwohl der Burger nicht lange auf mich warten musste. Fries waren in Ordnung aber nix ausssergewöhnliches, dafür ein tolles Angebot an Saucen. Ob hausgemacht ist allerdings fragwürdig.

Fazit: Einer der besten Burger in Deutschland, aber leider im internationalen Verleich mit Burger Joint (NY) und Byron (London) gibts nur 6 aus 10 Punkten.

Einer dieser Läden die eigentlich irgendwie vom Aussterben bedroht sind. Koch und Backzubehör auf drei Etagen, ein absoluter Traum für Köche & Bäcker!
Mir persönlich hat es vor allem das Untergeschoss angetan, Backformen in jeglicher Art & Form sind dort zufinden, sowie Cupcake & co. Zubehör!

Das Töpfelchen auf dem i sind allerdings die Mitarbeiter! Als das von mir gesuchte nicht zu finden war, wurde mir kurzer Hand der Weg zur Konkurrenz erklärt (dort leider nicht zu finden). Das nenne ich mal Kundenservice!

Der Vorteil am kalten Wetter? Der Rhabarber kommt pünktlich mit den ersten deutschen Erdbeeren!
Leider findet man im Süden meist eher den grünen, deutlicher sauren Rhabarber, der vor allem dieses Jahr in Opa’s Garten reichlich vorhanden ist.
Zu meinem Leidwesen während meiner Kindheit, mochte ich ihn doch überhaupt nicht. Allerdings hat sich das seit letztem Jahr geändert.

Was lag also näher zum traditionellen Muttertagsessen zum Nachtisch Rhabarber aufzutischen? Durch Zufall ist mir dabei auch die seit längerem auf der Nachkochliste stehenden Quarkcreme Mousse von Micha eingefallen, welche auch schon durch so einige Blogs gezogen ist. Genau das richtige. Liebe ich doch Gerichte, die sich perfekt vorbereiten lassen, am liebsten schon einen Tag vorher

Luftig, leicht & cremig und genau richtig “fest”. Abgerundet hat das ganze für mich aber der Rhabarber. Fast im eigenen Saft gegart, mit etwas Honig gesüsst und leicht gewürzt Schmeckte mir am nächsten Tag fast noch besser im Porridge. Gefunden hatte ich das ganze im neuen Nigel Slater – nach Gemüse hat mich nun auch Obst überzeugt.

Quarkmousse
nach Grain de Sel
Zuaten:
200 g Quark (Mager)
100 ml Sahne
125 g Joghurt, mind. 3,8%
30 g Puderzucker
1/2 Vanillestange, Mark ausgekratzt
Abrieb einer 1/2 Bio-Zitrone
2 Blatt Gelatine

Zubereitung:
1. Die Gelantine für mind. 10 Minuten in kalten Wasser einweichen. In der Zwischenzeit die Sahne steif schlagen. Den Quark mit Zucker, Joghurt, Vanillemark und dem Zitronenabrieb in einer Schüssel verrühren.

2. Gelantine mit 3 El. Wasser in einem Topf auf kleinster Stufe (alternative Mikrowelle) erhitzen, bis sich die Gelantine aufgelöst hat. Ein paar Löffel der Quarkmasse hinzugeben, gut verrühren dann zur restlichen Masse geben und gut vermischen. Anziehen lassen, erst dann die Sahne vorsichtig unterheben. In 4 Gläser füllen und für mind. 4 Stunden kalt stellen.

Ofenrhabarber
nach Nigel Slater “Tender – Obst”
Zutaten:
400 g Rhabarber
3 Tl. Honig (hier Kastanienhonig)
1 Zimtstange, in Stücke gebrochen (hier: Zimtrinde)
1/2 ausgekratzte Vanillestange (ohne Mark)
2 Sternanis
Saft einer Zitrone

Zubereitung:
1. Den Ofen auf 160°C Ober-Unterhitze vorheizen. Den Rhabarber waschen, putzen, evtl. schälen und in 5 cm lange Stücke schneiden und in eine ofenfeste Form legen. Mit dem Honig, Zitronensaft beträufeln. Zimtstange, Vanillestange und Sternanis hinzugeben. Für 30-45 Min. im Ofen garen, bis der Rhabarber weich ist.

2. Die Form aus dem Ofen nehmen, Zimtstsange und Sternanis entfernen und leicht abkühlen lassen, allerdings noch warm servieren.

Diese Woche fällt mir irgendwie spontan Paulchen Panther mit “Wer hat an der Uhr gedreht” ein, wie schon wieder Donnerstag. Endlich beginnt der kulinarische Frühling mit deutschem Spargel. Seit ein paar Jahren habe ich meine Liebe für das weisse & grüne Gemüse gefunden. Besonders der grüne Spargel hat es mir angetan.

Als nicht nur Juliane sondern auch Ina von der Radieschen-Schnittlauch-Vinaigrette in Kombination voon Spargel schwärmten konnte ich nicht widerstehen und der diesjährige Spargelsaisonauftakt startete damit.

Und ich bezweifle das es das letzte Mal auf den Tisch gekommen ist, super schnell zubereitet (perfekte Feierabendküche), dazu eine harmonische Kombination aus Spargel und Radieschen. Volle Punktzahl!

Spargel mit Radieschen-Schnittlauch-Vinaigrette
nach “Willkommen im Gemüsegarten” von Oliver Brachat und Tobias Rauschenberger

Zutaten:
2 kg Spargel, grüm
Salz, Zucker
2 Bund Radieschen
4 El Himbeeressig
4 EL Rapsöl
2 EL Honig
Salz, Pfeffer
1/2 Bund Schnittlauch

Zubereitung:
1. Backofen auf 200°C Ober-Unterhitze vorheizen. Den Spargel waschen, holzige Enden abschneiden. Vier Stück Backpapier vorbereiten, darauf den Spargel verteilen. Mit Salz und Zucker bestreuen. Die komplett verschlossenen Päckchen auf ein Backblech setzten und im Backofen für ca. 20 -30 Min. garen lassen.

2. In der Zwischenzeit die Radieschen waschen, putzen und in feine Stifte schneiden. In einer Schüssel Rapsöl, HImbeeressig, Salz und Pfeffer verrühren. Schnittlauch waschen, trocken schüttel und in feine Röllchen schneiden.

3. Den Spargel portionsweise auf Teller verteilen, mit Radieschen bestreuuen und die Viinaigrette darüber giessen und mit Schnittlauch bestreuen.

2006 war ein Jahr das einiges veränderte. Deutschland veränderte sich, wir änderten uns, und wie wir gesehen wurden. Das Jahr der WM im eigenen Land. Ich hatte Pech und keine Karte für die Spiele in Stuttgart bekommen, also packte ich meine Koffer und machte mich für 6 Wochen aus dem Staub. Bildhaft ans andere Ende der Welt.

Verliebte mich in Tim Tams, fand Nemo und wurde nicht von Jelly Fish gestochen, dafür fast als Mittagessen eines Barracuda’s gelandet, kuschelte einen Koala, lernte die Regel “nie unter halben Tank” fahren, lag im Swaq unter dem traumhaftesten Sternenhimmel im roten Herzen des Landes, genuss Austern & das Nachtleben in Melbourne…

Die Wochen in Australien waren herrlich, staunend erlebte ich eine Fussball-Euphorie mit Autoflaggen, Public Viewing, Hupfkonzerte – in Australien und sah verblüffelt die Bilder aus Deutschland. Jubelende Menschen, schwarz-rot-gold auf Autos, hängend von Balkonen und Fenstern, und vieles mehr. Ich glaubte es nicht, und war erstaunt wie begeistert die Australier “unser” Land fanden, sympathisch. Gar nicht steif und so ganz ohne Humor sondern ein nettes Völkchen.

Danke WM! Danke Fussball! Und danke für die tollen sechs Wochen. Warum ich jetzt über Australien schwärme? Weil Zorra zum 8. Blogevent-Geburtstag gerne etwas von DU hätte- bei mir gleich im Doppelback. Meerbarbe (auch dort heimisch) nach einem Rezept der australischen Jamie Oliver Kopie – Donna Hay. Und für mich eine Premiere. Fenchel!!

Ich muss gestehen, mein neues Lieblingsgemüse im Winter! Und so einfach, pur wie ich es aus Australien kenne.

Meerbarbe mit geröstetem Fenchel
nach Donna Hay “Jahreszeiten”

Zutaten:
4 Fenchelknollen, geputzt und fein geshnitten
2 rote Zwibeln, in Spalten
2 El Olivenöl
2 El. Thymian
Meersalz, schwarzer Pfeffer
2 Meerbarbenfilets
etwas Schnittlauch, fein geschnitten

Zubereitung:
1. Backofen auf 200°C Ober-Unterhitze vorheizen.

2. In einer ofenfeste Form den Fencheln, Zwiebel mit Olivenöl vermischen, und mit Salz und Pfeffer würzen. Für 20 Mind. im Ofen schmoren lassen.

3. Den Fisch waschen, abtupfen und auf das Gemüsebett legen. Mit Salz und Pfeffer würzen und für 10 -12 Min. garen.

Weimar hat nicht nur kulturell einiges zu bieten, auch über das kulinarische Angebot war ich sehr überrascht.

Thüringer Bratwurst
Ohne den bekanntesten kulinarischen Thüringen Exportschlager zu kosten, kann man eigentlich Thüringen nicht besucht haben. Die Thüringer Bratwurst wird mit Kümmel, Pfeffer und Salz gewürzt, und über Holzkohle gegrillt.

Meine stammt vom Marktplatz, direkt gegenüber dem Best Western Hotel in der Mitte von Weimar. Mit 2,50 € für die Wurst im Brötchen ein günstiges & schnelles und vor allem gutes Mittagessen.

Hinweis auf den besten Kuchen in Weimar findet man im Internet so gut wie nicht, vermutlich möchten die Weimarer das Kuchenangebot einfach nicht mit uns Touristen teilen. Oder ob es daran liegt das es nur wenige Sitzplätze gibt oder es etwas ausserhalb des eigentlichen Zentrums liegt?
Die angebotenen Kuchen und Tartes sind allerdings den kurzen Spaziergang Wert. In Aviv Koriat’s Rezepte mischen sich Familienüberlieferungen, Backtraditionen aus aller Welt und persönliche Erlebnisse insbesondere aus seiner Jugend in einem Kibbuz nahe dem Jordan.

Endlich ist es Frühling! Und gestern ist mir erst aufgefallen, wie schnell der auch schon wieder vorbei sein wird. Die Blütenbracht der letzten Wochen ist dank Gewitterschauer schon verschwunden, und durch dichtes grün ersetzt worden. Und aus dem kahlen häufchen Elend Wald ist ein dichter Dschungel geworden, wo ich mich schon morgens fragte ob es nicht sinnvoller wäre mit Licht zu fahren.

Und bald gibts am Wochenede wieder Frühstück auf dem Balkon, gemütlich und ohne auf die Uhr zu schauen. In den letzten Wochen hat sich mein Frühstücksfave mal wieder geändert, unter der Woche gibts Müsli im Glas (Rezept folgt), und am Wochenende wird gemütlich nachdem Samstagseinkauf mit frischem Müsli oder Brötchen, Tee, Espresso und frischem O-Saft gefrühstückt.

Und immer wieder gerne gibt es Porridge oder wie es die Ami’s nennen Oatmeal. Ich liebe es einfach, egal in welcher Form. Und ich muss gestehen das ich seit ich bei Kath über Nutty Butter gestolpert bin und in NY ein Glas in den Koffer gewandert ist, sie vollkommen verstehe. Es gibt dem ganzen den gewissen Kick! Und sind Nüsse nicht auch gesund

Das Porridgerezept ist mein quasi Stammrezept, dank Katha nun mit gerösteten Haferflocken und immer noch ohne Zucker.

Sommerliches Porridge

Zutaten:
1/3 cup Haferflocken, grob
1 cup Wasser
1/2 Tl. Chiasamen
Obst nach Wahl (hier Erdbeeren)
1 Tl. Nussbutter (hier Sonnenblummen)
1/3 cup Milch, kochend

Zubereitung:
1. Die Haferflocken in einer beschichteten Pfanne leicht anrösten, vom Herd nehmen und abkühlen lassen. Dann mit Wasser und Chiasamen in einem kleinen Topf vermischen und auf mittlerer Hitze für 10 min. leicht köcheln lassen.

2. Porridge in Müslischalen füllen, Obst und Nussbutter nach Wahl hinzufügen und mit heisser Milch übergiessen.

Irgendwie gewöhnt man sich doch an die diese Brückenwochen, wenn sich am Mittwoch das halbe Büro bereits ins Wochenende verabschiedet, Kollegen nicht mehr zuerreichen sind. Das lässt heute auf einen schnellen Weg ins Büro hoffen mit wenig Störung durchs Telefon. Mal schauen ob ich recht behalte – den ganz unter uns (und ja nicht weitersagen an die lieben Kollegen), macht Arbeiten an Brückentagen echt Spass. Wer hat schon lust, sich mit tausend anderen durch die Einkaufsmeilen der Region zu schieben, oder die Supermärkte zu plündern?

Und auch fürs uns arbeitende gehts ja bald ins Wochenende – daher starten wir gleichmal mit Steffi’s Frage Foto Freitag

Irgendwie bin ich heute immer wieder auf die drei gekommen. Egal ob Mai (drei Buchstaben), die drei in 2013, in meinem Geburtsjahr und bald auch in meiner Altersangabe (seufz), und wenn wir schon bei Geburtstagen sind – ‘Lunch For One’ besteht seit 3 Jahren am heutigen Tag !! Also quasi Blog-Geburstag!

Ich hätte 2010 nicht gedacht das ich solange durchhalte, auch bei einer kleinen Schwäche im letzten Jahr, dafür ist seit Jahresbeginn die Freude am Bloggen zurück. Und als kleines Dankeschön an euch fürs Durchhalten haben 3 (da ist sie schon wieder) meiner Lieblingsverlage Edel, Dumont & Rolf Heyne Collection die folgenden Bücher zur Verlosung spendiert.

Home Made. Sommer von Yvette van Boven. Yvette’s Bücher Home Made. Natürlich hausgemacht  und Winter. Home Made waren meine Neuentdeckungen in 2012, und auch das neusteste steht dem in nichts nach. Die ersten ausprobierten Rezepte lassen den fehlenden Sommer doch glatt vergessen! Erschienen im Verlag Dumont

Das britische Fotomodell und Schauspielerin Sophie Dahl begeisterte 2010 mit einer Kurzserie die britischen Zuschauer, und ich muss gestehen das mich die Rezepte in ihrem Buch Von Saison zu Saison auch überzeugten. Tolle Ideen und ich freue mich jetzt schon auf die Pfrisichzeit um die “Gegrillte Pfirsiche an Pistazien und Ricotta” auszuprobieren. Erschienen im Verlag Edel.

Das Verlagshaus Rolf Heyne Collection schafft es immer wieder in Deutschland noch unbekannte ausländische Kochbuchstars zu veröffentlichen. So auch Ninco Zoccali’s Pasta. Von einfach bis extravagant. Der australische Küchenchef bringt hierbei Pasta in ungewöhnlicher Art und zu jedem Gang auf den Teller. Kauftipp!
