The Red Cross Palm Beaches-Treasure Coast Region’s Youth Council is hosting a “Battle of the Bands Aid Concert 2013” on January 12 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Port St. Lucie Civic Center!

The Youth Council has partnered with the Roundtable of St. Lucie County to stage the event. Proceeds will benefit American Red Cross Disaster Relief and the Roundtable’s Kids at Hope Initiative. Sponsors include Big Apple Pizza and Walmart.

Tickets are $5 and will be sold at the door.

The idea to hold a benefit concert was inspired by members of the St. Lucie Youth Council who are members of their local high school bands or orchestras and who share a common love of music and its calming, healing effects during times of crisis.

In all, four bands will perform during the three-hour session including: Astrophobia, One Last Chance, Seconds from Dreaming and A Night Worth Waiting For.

Red Cross Announces 37th Designers’ Show House and Artisan Workshops

The American Red Cross Palm Beaches-Treasure Coast Region is proud to announce its 37th Designers’ Show House and Artisan Workshops that will support the 16 leading design firms who will transform a 5,000 sq. ft. Key West style house with breathtaking intracoastal views into a best-in-show display of “Island Living” decor.

This year’s Show House is located at 123 Santa Lucia Ave. in West Palm Beach, and will be open from January 24 – February 23. A Preview Party will kick-off the run on January 23.

Throughout the run, a series of artisan workshops will feature world-class designers who will be lecturing, offering design tips and even signing books for attendees.

Tickets to the lectures are $60 each and include one general admission ticket to the Show House.

See how your American Red Cross answered the call in 2012 with these year-end disaster statistics. Our incredible volunteers will be there whenever and wherever they’re needed in 2013!

While people are finalizing plans for holiday events and travel, the American Red Cross Palm Beaches-Treasure Coast Region has tips to help prevent accidents and emergencies.  Following a few simple tips can help make the holiday season safe and enjoyable:

Holiday Decorations and Parties

• Place Christmas trees at least three feet away from any heat sources and exits. Water the tree daily.
• Don’t overload electrical outlets and unplug holiday lights before leaving home or going to bed.
• Keep candles away from combustible materials and in a place where children and pets can’t get to them.
• Pick a designated driver when attending a party and provide non-alcoholic beverage options if hosting a party.
• Keep children and pets away from the stove; turn pot handles in; and turn off burners if leaving the kitchen.

Holiday Travel

• Make sure vehicles are in good working order before holiday trips. This includes checking tire air pressure and windshield fluid, and cleaning lights and windows.
• Equip vehicles with an emergency preparedness kit with water, snacks, flashlight, first aid kit and blankets.
• Check weather and road conditions before traveling.
• Share travel plans including intended route and estimated arrival time with someone.

No matter where people are spending the holidays, downloading the American Red Cross First Aid App allows users to have information on what to do in emergencies whenever and wherever they need it. A variety of mobile apps are available at redcross.org/mobileapps.

Support the Red Cross Efforts in Response to Hurricane Sandy!

More than 3,200 people spent the night in 112 Red Cross shelters in nine states – New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Maryland, Delaware, Virginia and Massachusetts. The number of people going to shelters is expected to grow quickly as the storm comes ashore.

The Red Cross has deployed more than 1,300 disaster workers to the region from all over the country to help those affected by the storm. As many as 160 emergency vehicles are ready to respond when it is safe to do so, and more than 230,000 ready-to-eat meals have been sent into the area.

This is a large, costly response, and the Red Cross needs your help now.
